  • Steve Young once signed the best pro football contract a player has ever signed, and he didn't even do it with an NFL team. Young, who went from playing college football at Brigham Young to the USFL, eventually found his way to the NFL and the at the time lowly Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He would then end up in San Francisco, backing up future Hall of Fame QB Joe Montana, before Young himself got a shot and proved more than worthy of the task - eventually also getting a Super Bowl MVP.
This is his story, as told by NFL Films.

At the time of his retirement in 2000, he had the highest career passer rating in league history
One hell of a pocket passer for a lefty

With his running ability, he would've been perfect for today's game. He was playing 20 years ahead of his time in the 90s.

Dang what a great time, era, cant believe it's been so long ago now, just was a golden time. Steve carried alot on his shoulders and made us all proud, especially us BYU and LDS fans, he was our face to the world. Proof to us our way of life producers at its best a great guy like Steve. Striving to be better. Trying to figure out who we are in this play of life, not just coast, but see what God wants us to be. Thanks Steve for your example, hard work, Being brave in adversity, but mainly giving all who love Football great unique memories. And lots of them. One of THE GREATS! Just I hope but bet you do help share what youve learned with Taysom, and now Zack. Thanks Again Steve, and all 49rs in that era!!

Imagine if Steve went to the NFL instead of USFL and ended up on the Giants somehow. Imagine the impact Young could’ve made on the NFL if he’d landed on the right team straight out of college. So much heart and passion

Fun to wonder what could’ve been but seems impossible for that to have even been an option. For one if he went to the NFL the Bengals were taking him with the #1 pick. And a major reason he chose the USFL is because he wanted to play right away. The Giants had Simms who was in his early years so hard to envision they’d have been ready to toss him aside as a failure to start Steve right away. And the facade of the contract the USFL offered him played a role too. But if those giants teams had Steve playing like he did when he took the Niners spot they would’ve been lethal

I'm pretty sure Steve has to have CTE. However I don't see any signs whatsoever.

The name of the track used in the opening is called "One Day. One Game". I believe it was included on the old NFL Film's Autumn Thunder CD boxed set released about 15 years back. You can probably find the song itself online if you look hard enough.

The "Monkey off my back" bit? Constant comparisons to how he couldn't win the Super Bowl like Montana had.
