X-Men and Batman came on Sundays in the '90s for y'all? because here on the East Coast x-man used to come on Saturday mornings. Batman the animated series used to come on during the weekday after school followed by Superman animated series.
Steve Young was 20 years ahead of his time with his skill set. He was incredible back then, he'd be even better now.
Imagine a world where they couldnt touch him or his receivers... Steve may have averaged 45 TDs passing and another 5 on the ground each season, and would've played several more years too

Steve Young is the most underappreciateded quarterback of all time. The guy is a top 5 QB of all time and nobody even knows who he is. He is the most efficient quarterback ever by far, nobody led his time with more efficiency than he is. His career avg. stats are misleading because he sat down his half of his career behind Joe Montana. Once he became a full time starter he never looked back. His stats between 1991 - 1998 are off the charts. Just google it. He led the league in passer rating 6 times between that time phrase. And his QB ratings were no joke. 101, 107, 112, 105, 97, 104. it's just insane. imagine he was a starting QB in his 20s. I'm not kidding just go look at his stats between 91 - 98. his Passing yards per attempt are out of this world. THE MOST efficient quarterback ever step on field.

He’s also very humble I won a trip to the pro bowl in 2005 and he was the only person that was approachable and didn’t mind taking a picture. Everyone else was an asshole in the way they said no.
Don't forget, in 99 they were 3-0 (or was it 4-0, I'll have to look up)and Steve was leading the league again in QBR again before A.Williams laid that dirty hit on him and ended his career. He was off to his hottest start yet. He had TO, JJ, Rice- They were unstoppable and I have no doubt they would have won it all that year. Dam shame what A.Williams did. It was a different game back then where QBs were NOT protected and babied like they are today. That 8 year stretch will never be duplicated. Steve was the GOAT and still is in my book

Also, I think Young while only being a starter for 8 full seasons still has an NFL record where he led the league in passer rating 6 times. His dominance from 1992 to 1994 is arguably the best three year stretch for a QB in NFL history.
Agreed. And he had to go toe to toe with one of the best dynasties ever in the 90's Cowboys. Imagine if they weren't there for 3 years in a row in the NFC title game. How many more SBs would Young have.. Probably two more, almost assuredly, just based on how great those matchups were against the Cowboys every year. NFC Championship Game WAS the super bowl back then--two best teams in the league, just happened to be in the same conference

Born in '91. I caught the tail end of Young but still thought he was amazing. He's in my top 5 of best QBs ever if for nothing else his talent made me fall in love with the game.

While Young's passing accuracy was top notch, it was his absolute fearlessness at running that always amazed me.
He threw a nice ball. I copied the way he held it and threw way more spirals (two fingers on the laces, then wrist snap). I did not have his wheels tho 😂

That's what makes his accuracy so unique. He was not a natural downfield passer like Marino or Namath. Those guys were taught great mechanics by their father and brother respectively. They arrived in pro football as polished products. Steve was born a gifted athlete, his natural talents were such that he should have been a halfback or a defensive back rather than a quarterback. If you read his biography, he talks about just how raw of a passer he was throughout his early years and even in college. At BYU, he was buried in the depth chart, and he was moved to defensive back. Despite that, he eventually become one of the most accurate deep ball throwers in the history of pro football. Steve wasn't born to be a quarterback, but that was his dream, through hard work he achieved it.
Steve Young was my favorite SF 49ers growing up. Jerry Rice was my dad’s favorite SF 49ers. Dad, I am so glad we were both able to see SF 49ers vs Tampa Bucs in Tampa, FL. Even though Jerry Rice injured his knee and we lost a very close game 13 vs 7, we had an amazing time. You passed shortly there after from cancer. But this is my greatest memory of us. Your face lit up when Young and Rice entered the locker at halftime from our end zone. Even when the dumbass Bucs fan pouring beer on us while we both wore #8 and #80. Love you dad. I still have those jersey. Your grandson wears Jerry Rice jersey now. Love dad. RIP.
Steve Young was the first truly modern, efficient passer. His quarterback ratings in the early '90's of 98.0+ set the standard that today's quarterbacks are held to. Two MVP's in three years, and arguably should have been more. Brilliant and strangely underrated; even vilified at times.
Legend has it that he’s still running all over the Vikings defense. Red and gold til I’m dead and cold!
Hell of a quarterback, and hell of a man. The book My Life Behind the Spiral gave me a bigger appreciation for Steve Young. The GOAT of lefty QBs. He would absolutely kill the game if he played today. One of my personal favorites of all time

Eventually Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson will take that crown.
Allen has as many 30 Pass and 5 Rush TD seasons as Young.
Lamar has the most 100 yard games and 1,000 yard rushing seasons for a QB and as of right now he currently leads the league in Pass TDs.
I'm Packers fan since 1996, I was nine years old, when my dad let me stay up and watch the Superbowl against the Patriots, but man, Steve Young was my absolute favorite QB during that era. He was then what many players are now at that position. He wasn't just a dual threat QB, he was a great scrambler, too, and he was gutsy and sticked it out instead of demanding a trade. He was great, not just as a lefty, he was all-time great.
Same here since 96 I remember the great 95,96,97 and 1998 playoff games and the 49ers can have 1998 I'll take three straight nfc championships and 2 super bowls in a row and one title after the 49ers dominance In late 80s and 90s
Oh man, Favre was a thorn in our ass back in the day. Weirdly enough we owned Rodgers. Young was my favorite QB of all time. I was a lefty QB scrambler, and Young was my hero. I believe he's also a nice dude to talk to, you'll get your autograph and your selfie with Steve.
Dude that was like my first game I watched too! Remember my dad asking me the night before if I wanted to watch the SB with him. I think it planted that seed to be into sports.

He was a tremendous passer that really threw a pretty ball. His fearlessness is summed up in the play against the Bears where he runs for the TD, takes a big hit well after crossing the plane, then bounced right back up and spiked the ball in the defenders face. He was the only one to beat the Cowboys in that era in the playoffs.

When Steve was given the reigns to start full time in ‘91, albeit Montana getting hurt in preseason, He never looked back, definitely the best Dual-Threat QB ever.
It wasn't easy for Young at the beginning because he even though he was productive winning MVP's & passing titles!! He still was in the shadows of Montana when it came to winning the big game. Winning the '95 NFC championship against the Cowboys & eventually against an inferior opponent in the Chargers elevated to a credible top QB.
Montana got hurt in the 1990 NFC championship Game not the preseason.

Wow, I almost forgot just how insanely awesome Steve Young was, idk why he's not mentioned more as being one of the greatest qb's ever to play football, he totally is the lefty qb GOAT. My team is the Giants and I remember watching the 90 championship game when Lennard Marshall hit Montana so hard that when he woke up he was traded and on a different team!!! He got knocked out as a 9er and woke up a Cheif!! Anywho, when Steve came in I thought it was gonna be easy, haa! It was a nail bitter and if LT don't cause that fumble bc they were trying to run out the clock and we recovered the ball we would of never won that game. But we did and won the SB!!!
He's underrated because his prime was very short. He only gave us about 7 years of relevancy, 1991-1998.

Thanks a ton for posting this Steve Young career highlight reel As an east coast '49er fan who became a Niner fan when I was a kid back in the '80s with the rise of Joe Montana, I'd forgotten not just how good, but how great, a quarterback that Young actually was and just how lucky the Niners franchise were to have had two consecutive H.o.F.-level starting QBs on their roster. Their decade and a half of dominance from the early '80s thru to the mid '90s would not have been possible were it not for that stroke of luck. Watching this video convinced me that he would've had three or four of his own Super Bowl titles had he not played a significant stretch of his overalm career as Montana's backup.
Something not mentioned in the video during the segment focusing on the early-mid '90s rivalry between the Niners and the then-ascendant Cowboys was the fact that, in the season in which the Niners finally defeated the Cowboys in the NFC Championship game, those two franchises also faced-off twice in the regular season (a scheduling quirk that doesn't happen in the NFL for franchises not in the same division) -- with SF besting Dallas in both meetings.
I wouldn't call it luck necessarily.. Walsh was absolutely great at spotting talent and what types of people would work best in his system..

He came in after a legend and carried the team as a legend. A great time to be a Niner fan.

I started watching the NFL in 1965 with my dad in Boston, dad was a player and a coach so I learned everything about football from dad very young, I watched Brady come here and win like no QB in history, I watched, Bradshaw, Marino, Tarkington, Staubach, Elway, manning, but Steve young was the most exciting QB to watch, bar none, you never knew what he'd come up with, he had to follow Montana so we figured no way he's going to be able to fill those shoes, he didn't, he had his own shoes, and man he could run in them.
Both Elway & Young idolized Staubach growing up!! The way they played with their daring style was reminiscent of Staubach.
Fun fact the 49ers from 1992-1995 had the best scoring offense 4 years in a row making them the last team to accomplish that feat

I can't remember who it was, but there was some former player who said that one of his coaches told him something to effect, "If you knock Montana out of the game, I'm cutting your ass on Monday, because I do not want to deal with Steve Young". Not the direct quote, but something like that. I didn't start watching football until well after Steve Young had retired, but he's one of my all-time favorite qbs. Still a little disappointed he never got that run-back against Joe Montana.
As a packers fan who was raised one and grew up watching us play in 95 96 97 and 98 and all of them were good memories even though 98 is bittersweet

I highly recommend everyone read the book he wrote. It's an excellent read about believing in yourself and a good behind the scenes at his life.

Man did you see that clip at 15:40? Young ran it in, then he got hit late. Young threw it at the guy that hit him, and Rice came in IMMEDIATELY at the guy. Might actually be the only time I saw Rice ready to actually fight a guy there. So much respect for both of them, I love them both, especially as a lefty myself. Steve showed me how to do it when I was a kid, wanted to be him, and I had no problem learning to catch like Jerry. I miss those guys, but Deebo and Aiyuk, and Kittle are pretty cool too.

This is my dad's era of the niners and I was 9 during the harbough era. I can't believe the amount of great players that have played for this team. Although I wasn't around during this time, I feel much apart of it as my dad. 9er football is different and I think Its a mixture of the history and this great city. 👏🏾

Absolutely 💯 beast. Wasn't "run happy". Always looked over his reads before he ran (unless he had a blitzer that wasn't picked up). He was a throw first and run only if he had to QB that would gut a defense throwing or running. All time class act on and off the field.

Watching this you forget how strong he was.
Watching this highlight video and one of the main thoughts that comes to mind - just how good Jerry Rice was. Some of the catches in this video I haven't seen before and just wow. No disrespect to Young - a great Qb who would have been great even if he had no mobility. But still, Rice is just something else.
The most underrated player in the history of the game
24:13 - #33 next to Steve is Lawrence Phillips, the man who later that same season missed a block on Aeneas Williams that led to Young's career ending concussion/ hit.
Tks, Steve. Video shows us how the NFL changed in the 90's. In 1991, Young could run crazy. There we collisions, and everybody moved on. By the end of the decade, players were 3x faster and 4x larger. Every hit a potential ACL, concussion, cracked ribs - out for the season. 1999 was too much for him.
Today you have to call penalties otherwise careers will be over every Sunday. The cult of "freaky" bodies spoiled a lot of the fun. Fortunately, Young could play when his best could be appreciated.

Steve has been the most exciting QB that has ever played the game. There will never be another than can come close. I would take the team I coached to watch the 49ers practice in Rocklin Ca. When the practice was over some players would sign autographs etc. Every practice Steve would take time to sign when most wouldn’t. Steve was an incredible inspiration to the kids I coached. I will never forget!

He's such a hard worker, I'd feel obligated to catch every pass he threw my way, if I were his teammates. He could have kept it and ran, he likely just dodged a blitz and got hit throwing the ball..... So, I'd be thinking "Man, I better not drop this and make Steve go through all that for nothing!"

I think Young gets overlooked as far as all time QB rankings because he got off to a late start. If you look at his stats from 1992-98, it was arguably the best 7 yr run of any QB in history. In an era where every QB had a low passer ratings, he had 100+ 6 of the 8 yrs. He won a SB MVP, 2 time league MVP, pro bowl every yr, 1st team all pro 3 times, 5 time completion % leader. He's top ever no question
