  • So, are games getting bigger and worse? Or is bigger always better? Either way, it's safe to say there are an insane amount quality games this year.

How do you feel about games?

I'm reaching the point where I'm debating playing larger, open games twice... once where I stick hard to the story and once where I do my usual thing of needing to go everywhere and do everything. There are some great stories buried in these larger games, but big story beats just don't hit as hard when you have 15 hours of screwing around in between each story moment. I love God of War 2018, and a bit part of it is it felt like the perfect size. I was open enough that it felt like you had lots to do, but it wasn't so large that it felt like it overwhelmed the story... you were still completing main story events at a reasonably good pace.

Good vid Phizzi, and great points. People don't remember what was said but they remember how it made them feel, seems as though most the big games focus on how it looks and as you say how big the world is rather than the soul and just the fun in the game.

It's the reason why i stopped playing new games. GAmes these days are 100gb+ (mainly cause of graphical assets), but they still can't beat the feeling Final fantasy 9 and Final fantasy 10 gave me 20 years ago...Still can't beat Tactics ogre from 1995. CRash team racing on the ps1 is still the best couch co-op race game ever. MEtal gear solid 1 on the PS1 is still the best action game ever made, and even better than any subsequent Metal gear solid games.. i often just find myself playing old games rather than playing new games...ONly new games that get better are car simulators, However, even though GRan turismo 7 is technologically the best in the series, Gran turismo 1 on the PS1 was still the most fun for me.
Only new game that i found and enjoyed playing often because it serves it's purpose, is surprisingly a mobile game, PUBG mobile, which i never would have thought so either, because i always though mobile games, especially mobile fps games were terrible. But PUBG mobile is really well made and really, it replaced the itch and has gameplay multiplayer mechanics similar to Socom 2. Other than this, i don't play any new games.

What a great piece to share, thank you!
There are still a lot of gems in the modern day that aren't huge!
If youve never gave games like Hollow Knight a look its one of my favourites

I've been jaded for years about modern games but Remnant 2 has honestly reinvigorated the love for me. It's so well done. Fun, interesting, replayable, not insanely huge and convoluted, runs well. Like it was made with love. Could never get into the soulslike games so felt I was missing out but this scratches the itch

Souls is a treat, recommend a lot.
I am loving R2 a lot at the moment. Lot of love in the right places. Hooked atm

I immediately thought about Elden Ring after seeing your thumbnail, it’s the perfect definition of quantity>quality in open world games, and that is really sad because FromSoftware are the ones who made it, a company we thought wouldn’t succumb to the open world vurse, but when you look at it’s design, Elden Ring is no different from Ubisoft games with rhe only exception being map markers, everything else you do in the game is just the same, they couldn’t even afford to make getting a map fragment rewarding, they just lay randomly on the ground always next to a tall tombstone, that screams rushed development. It also doesn’t make any sense to show on the unfinished map where the actual map of the area is. And you can’t put markers on the reused points of interests you see in the world, you have to check the map and just guess where on the map the point of interest you saw in-game was, and place a marker there.
