As someone who works in SEO, they 100% do use your past search results to tailor your future auto-completes and search results. Using an incognito window to search can help, but it'll still catalog everything you search during that session and start tailoring from there too.

    • @itsgabibelle
      @itsgabibelle  Рік тому +501

i thought so too, i noticed they do it when you're already in a search flow, (and with the new "journeys" thing) but i found no difference in multiple searches in incognito and while signed in, on different devices, and tested with a friend from across the country too, on vanilla google.com. the sources were really vague about it as well. i'm sure there's more of a component but couldn't back it up personally

I still remember the day google search suggestions switched from only showing things you'd searched previously to being based on things anyone anywhere in the world had searched. Because my parents didnt know about this change, started typing "how to" and yelled at me and my brother for "how to kiss" showing up (we were both quite young at the time).
Luckily my parents arent abusive assholes and were receptive to an explanation + demonstration that google changed how its search suggestions work.

I’ve been struggling to find the answers I look for on Google a lot recently. And trying to find discussions on Reddit forums was impossible because their search feature is just super broken. Then I’d use Google search for finding Reddit threads about specific questions and it worked well. So I’ve started adding “reddit” at the end of a lot of my Google searches and it’s way easier to find helpful answers that aren’t just trying to sell me stuff. Then I found out lots of people do this. It’s a thing. If anyone else is struggling to find an answer to their questions on Google, especially if the issue is all the top results being ads and/or large companies giving generic info using your keywords, then it might be worth adding “reddit” to the end of your query, depending what it is.

  • @mildlycornfield
    @mildlycornfield Рік тому +162

Ironically, the 'more human' search algorithm has made trying to use more specific keywords (academic, etc.) practically useless recently. Google seemingly decides that using uncommon terms must be 'accidental' and will more often come up with its cutesy 'did you mean [more common search term that sounds vaguely similar but is actually unrelated or considered incorrect in the context]?' than it used to

I'm an IT Security specialist and you're spot on regarding scam advertisements. They are dangerous and need to be fixed ASAP. A popular method is to fake a software download site for VLC, OBS Studio or Notepad++ and bundle the application with a computer virus. This can happen to *anyone* if you're not paying full attention. We actively recommend Adblockers to our customers as an initial security layer.

@Matanumi it is. It's a pharmacy. Here in the States, that means it's also a convenience store that even has a tiny grocery section and seasonal items and odds and ends. But they don't sell tobacco/nicotine products anymore (outside of nicotine replacement therapy like gums and patches). And depending on the state and county, they may sell alcohol. Apparently, it's really weird to outsiders that our pharmacies sell more than medicine, so I thought you might find it interesting

I'm an SEO professional and most of what you say is on point, just to chip in - the biggest reason for Google not explaining how their algorithm works in detail is because there are always bad actors waiting to game the system. They've been pretty transparent with a lot of the important things good meaning site owners need to know, which is why you were able to find all the info for this video :)

As someone who works in IT, I can get behind this pure English translation.
Also, you can go to Google's site, click your profile picture (or sign in) > Manage Your Google Account > Data & privacy and you can turn on or off History Settings, Personalized Ads, Personal results in Search, Info you can share, Data from apps and services you use, more options to remove as much as you can. Also, I strongly recommend using Brave Browser & Search, since it's Chromium-based but with a load of extra security. I've been using it as default since 2020 and I love it.
10:15 - Say it! Say "shit"! Give your opinions the impact you want them to make! Yes, I know, I know, I know, I know, demonetization, but L33T speak & censors just don't have the same "passion", if you will as an uncensored video. I'm meticulous, and it's why I'll never hit UA-cam Partner, but I've never been one to hold back.
I do, on the other hand, have Aura on my devices with VPN/antivirus and I haven't really had any issues, but it will take sooooooo long to fix 1,600+ passwords.

In a few engineering interviews I've asked the candidate to whiteboard how a system like auto complete would work then take it apart piece by piece and i think you got the key points.
Also you asked about the term user intent. It's a catch-all best I can tell / buzzword for "quickly and accurately getting the user what they want" but I also see it used to mean "how can we (the company) profit and, you know, still do all that other stuff" - almost more like user engagement. idk, just my two cents. TBH I think you'd make a great software engineer.

6:51 I think they actually do use your search history for autocomplete. Some of what I experienced makes no sense otherwise. The autocomplete I get before and after a search is totally different. Say I searched some anime or game I never searched before. Any search after that for a few hours to a few days will have an autocomplete that reference that anime or game. It lasts even longer in the autocomplete based on if I clicked on different websites or just bailed.
Funnily enough, even watching a UA-cam video can change your autocomplete results. Right before this video I did a "What does" search for something else and the "rizz" autocomplete was not there. Once I did the search again right after hitting that point in your video, it suddenly became my top result.

Google definitely does use search history for autocomplete results. Lately I’ve noticed when I’m trying to search forum answers to technical issues I’m having it’s autocomplete will over rely on terms I’ve used for previous searches to autocomplete the search I’m currently doing. Sometimes it’s nice and helpful but others they’ll get really locked in on the wrong part of what I’m looking for. This does seem to refresh every session though.

Okay so, here’s what I’ve noticed with autocomplete:
When you search in one window and you search for a topic twice in a row the following suggestions will all be popular searching surrounding that very specific thing you’re searching.
Meaning if I search for “is illegal hunting in Kenya bad?” followed by “places where poaching is the biggest problem” the autocomplete will, rather than give me the most popular searches to that next question, give me suggestions that alludes to a place in or near Kenya that has the worst cases of poaching. Rather than the worst place on earth.
Meaning search engine autocomplete can lead you down a hole where it seems like your first assumption that it was in Kenya is right when it’s more common in (say) South Africa.
I was writing a novel that included poaching problems and this exact problem happened to me. I got about halfway through the novel when I realised Google was personalising to my immediate searches. When I opened a new window the answers I got were WAY different.

P.S. You really did explain in an easy to understand manner. Glad to revisit the concepts again!

I recently c.. I recently discovered your videos & have been catching up on your content. It's pretty good, I'm very into music stuff and & when your Puth video popped up on recommended I subscribed immediately. I've watched almost every recent video and you don't really disappoint!
Then in this one. This one joke you made.. I KNOW what you meant by it, or at least I pray that I do. But I audibly gasped when you said "It's trending topics that may come in short bursts... Like your dad."
I had to pause the video and very quietly laugh myself to tears. It's possibly the funniest thing anyone's ever said in a video on this topic.

The actual definition of the "dark web" is anything you can't access with just a normal browser and search engine. This includes even simple stuff like private Facebook groups, all of discord etc. because in addition to the browser and search engine they also require a login and invitation.

That's called the deep web, not the dark web. The deep web is stuff behind passwords and invites. Dark web is the illegal information.

They absolutely do tailor search results based on your history, it's just not super aggressive about it. They usually sit several suggestions down the stack, beneath ones that are undoubtedly more popular queries, but above ones that certainly would have shown up for someone else.

As someone who does search advertising for a living, they will never stop scams from advertising. The way they try to do it is by placing more relevant ads at the top but if you build a very quality scam site, you can game the system

I use google complete A LOT. like every day. for:
    1) Correct my grammar in English (because that's not my first language). if I don't know how to use a word in a specific phrase, google complete always saves me.
    2) remember words (even in Portuguese). I have ADD, so I frequently forget some common words. so I type some phrase that word would fit and google complete saves me.
    3) name of music, bands, movies, series, etc, because I always forget that kind of thing. Most time I don't need to even search, in google complete I found what I need.
    4) when I'm browsing on my PC and want to do some math, use the search bar it's easier than opening the calculator.
    and much more.

If Google doesn’t use my browsing history, then explain how I can come across a word/concept I don’t understand in a video/article/post/etc., open a new window to look it up, click into the search bar, and BEFORE I EVEN START TYPING, the thing I came to look for is the first suggestion.
Not gonna lie, it’s helpful 😅🙈 Creepy as heck… but also helpful 🤷🏻‍♀️
