  • Joachim Zuther, Founder of the Academy of Lymphatic Studies, talks about how lymphedema progresses through different stages, what changes typically happen to the tissues during that progression, and why it is important to treat lymphedema as soon as possible to avoid progression and to reverse any tissue changes with appropriate treatment.

I wish someone would address the ignorance of Primary care physicians who jump to treat obvious symptoms of red thickened skin on swollen limbs w steroid creams, BP meds and resent suggestions by patients that it might just be lymphedema. My PCP 2 yrs ago suggested a thick petroleum based moisturizer for my red, just beginning to swell left leg. Nothing has worked, now both legs are swelling and she insists the BP meds should alleviate all symptoms. Elevating legs no longer works, compression socks are excruciating on skin, in fact anything touching my legs causes an itch that cannot be eased, witch hazel temporarily eases the agony. You cannot get a specialist to see you without a 'referral'...I'm writing this because I simply don't where to turn, but a patient having knowledge isn't enough, we need doctors to be informed partners willing to think outside their little boxes as well. But thank you for your series of very informative videos.

Dear Rach, thank you for your comment. I would suggest you seek a consultation with a certified lymphedema therapist. Here is a link assisting you in locating a therapist in your area: www.lymphedemablog.com/find-a-therapist/

I guess Mr. Zuther is not a Physician. He does not even define what lymphatic system is. If he does not even show anatomic diagrams which anyone can Google it so that one can understand what he is talking about. Without a diagram, you can talk about lymphedema and you will fall asleep and you will not understand the lymphatic system . He does not even differentiate lymphedema from edema (swelling of the leg/s.

Wish I'd found this out when my legs were first injured by 2nd degree burns, when my now 34 year old son was 7-8.

Hello sir, your the only one who had ever talked about reversing it that I have come across in the last 2 months.
No doctor that I have consulted has told me the stage even after asking. my mother has developed it after cancel treatment in her right foot. it was restricted in her foot for a year and then she got an infection after which she started experiencing pain swelling and pain till below her knee.
I don't know which stage this is and if it's irreversible. the thought that this may increase more: the pain and swelling is not letting my mind rest. please help me recognised the stage and if I can hope that the pain will fully go away and it won't progress further. she also has diabetes

Tell your mom to take digestive enzymes, and drink lots of water. This will help to dissolve some of the hardened lymph, and allow it to clear out. Also learn massage to redirect the lymph fluid into new pathways, which should lessen her swelling. Good luck🙏
