With reference to the catalytic converters breaking up. With the V12 engine used in the Aston Martin DB9 and other Astons of that era, the catalytic converters close to the exhaust headers can start to disintegrate and potentially be injested back into the engine. Obviously not a good thing, and something owners are aware of and always on the look out to prevent. The cause? Misfires due to failing coil packs sending unburnt fuel down the exhaust. The unburnt fuel then settles on the catalyst and burns, damaging the catalyst material and causing it to break up. It seems to me a simple solution would be to position the initial catalyst further away from the exhaust header, though there is probably a good reason why this is not done.
Pre cats are not a legal requirement in the UK, you can remove them and still pass the MOT test, though they should still 'look' like they are fitted... Also, it's not the heat from the fuel burning that kills them, cats are designed to work hot. It's the shocks from the explosions in the exhaust from the unburnt fuel that shatter them. Or they just block up, which is much more common. In that case, more heat would actually help by burning off the carbon.

Hey VAG Tech! Loved the video. Wanted to ask you. My cousin just recently bought a 2012 Audi S4 3.0TFSI. He drove it for about a week and the Check engine light (CEL) came on. Today he went to the electrician and he scanned 3 codes. P045500 P052A00 and P052C00. The first one is something with the fuel system (fuel cap was put on not correctly ?). The other two is the ones with the camshaft sensors in the bank 1 if im not mistaken. He managed to clear the codes out. Do you think it's safe to drive it if it doesn't show up again after a week or two ? What would you suggest doing ? My cousin also feels like the car starts longer now in the mornings when cold. So is it a bad camshaft/crankshaft sensor or the timing chain is out of adjustment and skipped a tooth ? Thank you vey much for the answer man.

However the rest of the online stuff out there regarding the newer VW / Audi common rail engines seem to be an absolute nightmare. And it's no better with other German marques. Tensioners, PCV issues, cats, always something. Are these all best avoided / have the Germans totally dropped the ball with quality/complexity ?
@RandomShart I was a mechanic for some years, even standard engines fails. I saw engines fail within 50.000km from brand new, engines making more noise than a metal shop, throwing codes, electrical problems, sensors, Bad steering, leaking all over by oil, coolant, pneumatic suspension fail, coolant piping fail, And you know what!? Toyota’s came in for oil and filter change, and you never saw them until the next changeout.
@RandomShart I’m not saying a Toyota can’t fail, but standing on the shop floor everyday just changing oil on Toyota’s and getting my hair grey on poor VAG’s tells a story to me. Yes, some Mercedes C class with check engine light came in, but in no way near VAG. BMW engines with oil consuming problems, Vanos fault, and head gasket issues too, but again, some Toyotas came in for a wheel bearing replacement, and when checking the records of the car, nothing else but oil service and some brakes, spare parts for over 340.000km.
Why didnt the owner want to go down the easy and smart option and get test pipes and put the CATS after the test pipes. That way you remove the heat and restriction away from the heads.
thats a scary thing for 3L TFSI owners because you wont know when/if your cat is coming apart and when you realize it, it might be too late, i guess maybe a simple hand over the exhaust tip periodically just to feel the exhaust flow pulses might be an indicator? damn those cats!

Get those Cats out Meow! They are a well known item that fails and causes engines to pop.
@@binderrik087 So is it due to how close the cats are placed to the exhaust manifold? I'd have thought normally tat gravity and distance would make it impossible for material to flow the wrong way back into the engine?
@@sinoperture hey mate. The material cracks, melts and can become dislodged severely reducing the flow of exhaust gases from the engine. It’s the reduction of exhaust gases that cause pressure to build in the engine and blow ring lands or spin bearings. In this video it happened on a stock car (like many others) but if your cars tuned it’s going to happen. It’s just a matter of time. Have the cats gutted or buy test pipes and get a test pipe tune.
@@binderrik087 Ta. On APR Stage 1. I'll speak to my mechanic about options. This didn't come up in my searches of known issues. But after this vid I searched in a more targeted way and have come across it a few times. Every Audi I've owned has been a servicing nightmare - hence why I went Porsche on my last sports car - that thing has been banged on like hell and is fine and purrs. I can't afford a Panamera and there are so few non SUV family cars left that are also not totally boring or over the top powered up...... so I went with a second hand A7. Just trying to now make sure it stays well behaved.
@@binderrik087 Its the cats up int he engine bay near the headers? Not any cats further down the pipe right?
How much did the job cost?
i could be wrong but i was always thought that a big audi v6 like that is not made to rest on the pan like that. it can warp or cause gasket issues it should always be held off the ground and weight kept off the pan.
Silicon … Plastic one Might crack , not metal one
@@VAGTechnic Thank you for the reply! I love your content. One of the best Audi Channels.
Are there any sensors on the catalytic converters that tell the warning signs before it causes more damage?
Hi,
You might have fault code with catalyst trashold, but had S5 here not long ago and it only had misfire above 4K revs
Great video VAG Technic! Does this happen on the B9's too. Or are the cats better on that engine?
Just Have B9 RS5 here now And the chains are done different way , don’t see that this problem will remain .
Hi there big Audi fan here, I have a question that’s been bothering me since I bought a salvage A6 avant. The steering seems to be locked not the steering lock itself but I have no steering at all when the car is running, at first I thought was the electric steering rack was knackerd but it looks fine and not sure if it’s to do with the crash itself that’s locked it. Any advice would be great.
Watching a lot of these excellent videos I’ve come to the conclusion that these high end Audi,s with expensive engines aren’t worth the money the repairs must cost a fortune
Great work guys. Question will this engine fit in a 2007 audi with the 3.2 lit?
No
Hi VAG Technic, would my 15 plate RS5 engine have the same potential CAT disintegration issue that could wreck my block too? It’s currently on 30k mls?
Hi let you know , working on one now ! Doesn’t look good
Is that going to be a UA-cam video too? Would be worth a watch. What is your pre-emptive advice to avoid this issue?
7 year old car 😳
@@riccccccardo Only 30k miles too. Hope his is ok.
@@gbw28 Audi are shameless company I’ll never own one ever again after two engine failures on mk7 a4 2.0 TFSI I had.
Was thinking about getting a audi a7 but the timing chain issues have put me right off
Every bigger engine have chain and every chain will go one day :) there are plenty out there running without issue, but once it goes , it goes deep in to your pocket
Where are you located?
Excellent job !
What caused so much damage to the engine? Did the owner drive aggressively
Hey VAG Tech! Loved the video. Wanted to ask you. My cousin just recently bought a 2012 Audi S4 3.0TFSI. He drove it for about a week and the Check engine light (CEL) came on. Today he went to the electrician and he scanned 3 codes. P045500
P052A00 and P052C00.
Hi if you have incorrect correlation fault timing will need doing
@@VAGTechnic How can I check if I have that? Any symptoms? Because engine sounds normal, drives normal. Just starts in the mornings a second longer.

Am gona definitely have to check out this place, this guy seems kool & looks like a very good mechanic but just abit worried about how long to fix cars if you need something fix fast cause I can see alot of cars in car park like waiting list, very good videos 4real😎👍
Very advance booking , unfortunately after the years there’s always something extra what need doing , sometimes we might end up waiting 2-4 weeks 🥲
@@VAGTechnic Atleast you a straight up & not like some people who just take your car & park up in carpark for 4 weeks when u expect back in few days, I hate when they do this cause if car not getting fix u can just leave at home till mechanic have time, ok thanks for update 😎👍
Great video!! Fix that damn fire alarm tho!!! It was annoying me just watching can’t imagine having to work with it😂😂
Just found your channel, very good loving the content. As someone who is looking to possibly buy a s4 3.0 tfsi in the near future any things to look out for other than cats would be appreciated. Have heard to avoid the 2009/2010 s4 due to engine failures. True or false?
Big Audi fan by the way..had too many too list. Currently running a remapped B7 estate 2.0tfsi fwd..great motor and no slouch either..
Hi thanks ! Don’t think the engines are bad in the earlier years , just auto boxes had issues
Are the 2015 engines reliable ? I just bought a 2015 B8.5 S4. 29k miles. Is there anything I should be careful of ? Tuning in particular?
Are the timing chain guides in the new kit upgraded to last longer?
Genuine and they should last another 80.000 miles :)
Im looking at getting a s4 or s5 but just curious to know is you had to replace the engine and etc how much would it be

@@VAGTechnic is that labour included etc as well plz
This is the first video I've seen from VAG Technic. I don't mean to assume but judging from the bike rattle clip he added at the beginning, he is from Czech republic. Just a guess.... :)))

Should I go catless to prevent this from happening to my S4?
Hi,
What's the cost of this catalytic converter repair on a C6 4f 3.0tfsi? I've got a booked appointment at you on the 21st Feb for timing chain and bits and considering to have the cats sorted before they say goodbye lol
Thank you,

Camshaft position sensor just disconnected one by one always
@@VAGTechnic you are the professional in this conversation but : “camshaft” and” crankshaft” are the same???
How common are these timing chain failures ? Is it only on tuned 3.0t or u see this in stock s4 with the 3.0 aswell?
Our part supplier told us it should be replaced after 80.000 miles for the head tensioner
@@VAGTechnic apperntly audi had fixed the timing chains issues ? Do you know what year models have tht fixed ?
For the 2011 Audi A8 4.2 . Are these 4.2 more reliable than the older 4.2 they 372 hp, is it common on those engines tht the timing chain goes bad?
It’s the gen 2 3.0 tfso the way to tell is open the hood if it’s a press on pulley it’s the gen 1 with timing chain failure I had the gen one only had rattle at cold start 1 to 2 seconds. Good reliable engine. The gen 2 3.0t has the bolt on pulley this have the updated timing chains. I think it’s 2015 to 2017. Then in 2018 they change it to a 3.0 turbo

What spec is the green audi estate on the ramp in the clip? Love the colour
Audi S6 , accidentally it became mascot of our garage … full video will come out soon what was done , also will check what colour is it
Hey just hopefully quick question.. as a owner is there any way of telling when the cats are going? Rotten egg smell or anything?
Sorry if I missed it in your video.
Hi,
We try to figure it out as well . Atm working on S5 and the cylinder n6 is disabling , looks like the bank 2 cat isn’t the best . I checked temperatures on each bank all good , lambda all good , so only way probably is endoscopic camera

@@sjkrausert Yeah mine had that had clogged up cats and my accelerating was slow with the clogged cats
How much does all that work cost
As a VW Multivan owner, I'm shocked at the bad online press the PD engines get as I don't have issues with mine (regular oil changes) and it's great to drive.
That knocking sound 😱
Great content and very interesting 🤙
How much did you charge for this complete job??

These engines seem to be a ticking time bomb
Not the engine, the whole brand.
@@Skyisnotalimit Yeap
@RandomShart I was a mechanic for some years, even standard engines fails. I saw engines fail within 50.000km from brand new, engines making more noise than a metal shop, throwing codes, electrical problems, sensors, Bad steering, leaking all over by oil, coolant, pneumatic suspension fail, coolant piping fail,
And you know what!?
Sorry if I missed it but what was the mileage on this vehicle?
Can someone highlight what went through? No idea what the the issue with the engine.
how much for labor?
Got a sub mate, nice content
Just curious - assume this was a genuine customer car - how much did all that cost?
Engine supply , timing chains with all accessories, catalyst , installation =8k
@@VAGTechnic Sounds a lot - not saying unreasonable -- it was an immense amount of work - hope the owner had some sort of warranty.
wow ur good.. so many high tier audis there..
Why didnt the owner want to go down the easy and smart option and get test pipes and put the CATS after the test pipes. That way you remove the heat and restriction away from the heads.
12:42 is that ticking sound from the hpfp or is that knocking?
Do b8.5s have chain issues too?
Yes
thats a scary thing for 3L TFSI owners because you wont know when/if your cat is coming apart and when you realize it, it might be too late, i guess maybe a simple hand over the exhaust tip periodically just to feel the exhaust flow pulses might be an indicator? damn those cats!
