• £17.000 For Repair ???...
In this video we are removing the engine and trying to figure out what exactly happened . We were a bit shocked after several components were removed and this is what we found inside of the engine. Is the owner lucky or not?

Was a Audi/VAG tech for 8 years and watching this brought back some memories, there is a reason i only drive old hondas lol
Yep I have worked on VAG group too and feel the same way. IMO they are unnecessarily complicated and horrible to work on.
And we all thought German engineering was great. Let's think again
haha same here!
I drive old Honda cause I can't afford an Audi
@@jellybaby7 i honestly wouldnt bother, the saying 'they dont make them like they used to' really applies to VAG, i wouldnt touch an old audi either tbh, you cant go wrong with a 90's/00's honda
I’m totally blown away by the enormous complexity of this engine, and even more by your skill at diagnosing and troubleshooting it. Thanks for sharing this fascinating content!
German engineering at its finest eh!
"I’m totally blown away by the enormous complexity of this engine"
- this comment merely exposes your ignorance of modern engines. This level of complexity is common across manufacturers in their advanced engines. Indeed, there are several levels of complexity beyond this too
@@buggerlugz6753 no, just modern engine design and engineering; nothing special
@@michaelanderson7715 why be so mean, ted just commenting on great content and you attack him. Don’t be a wanker
I maintain there's a technological step between a regular family car engine and a high performance engine model in the range, hence my distinction of 'advanced engines'.
Wow, excellent vlog, and editing. Editing this must have taken a while. You fellas are top notch. Thanks for exposing all the weaknesses of this RS engine.
Great to watch pro's at work. Keep up the great work, love watching your content from Australia. Massive thumbs up.
Excellent video as usual, can't wait for the next video. One of the best mechanical channel on UA-cam.
These techs are amazing. Their skill is off the charts! Thanks for sharing!
Man, that's gonna be some expence! I can't understand, though, how a modern 2019 car suffers such a catastrophic failure. Nuts.

@@VAGTechnic well I know where to come, if my A7 ever goes majorly wrong! Love the content.
Because its Audi

This 2.9 tfsi and the 3.0 tdi out of the s4 s5 s6 have major problems with conecting rods bearings i work at audi in germany and this a 'Normal' Problem in the s4 s5 s6 rs4 and rs5

Thank you for sharing, we get first hand experience of what inside the engine. A bit disappointed when realized that it’s not dual injection.
Every time I have the desire to have one of this and see this video, I remember I don't have deep pockets and I simply love more every single day my Superb 3U with remap #1.
Excellent troubleshooting and I was looking for the fail also.

Dude loving the content keeping it real!! As always you make it look so easy, and what’s your secret you still look fresh as a daisy at 10pm I’d be knackered 😂😂😂🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Not that it matters that much but it’s a 2017 car, as commented below. Great videos. In the previous one I thought typical dealers re:replace engine. But now you kind of can see why as they look for simpler solution and wouldn’t be willing to allocate the diagnosis time as much as you guys. If I had an Audi I’d bring it to you guys! :)
Congrats, very good content an actual mechanic in youtube!!!!
Very Good Video! Always love to watch :) In my Shop we also had a Rs5 with less Milage and we had the exact same issue, but due the car was new back then and it was still in warrenty we were looking way longer then you Guys did! Well done
Thanks , we actually spent two days making it run , than once the engine is out it was matter of time to find it 😄 it is sad what happened, I thought when I saw the 2.9 first I was like woooow , good platform , few years later I come to decision I have to put my B5 S4 back on the road , no chance I’m getting 50k car and facing these issues
@@VAGTechnic isnt this issue fixed? What about the platform don’t you like?
Those rocker arms are notorious to fail at 30K miles or so on these Porsche designed V6s. Water pumps are also pushing coolant out into the vacuum port also, causing overheat and low boost concerns if it gets past the coolant solenoid and into the N75 solenoid and vacuum reservoir. Good times, lol
Thank you for your vlogs! The vlogs are very nice to watch and nice editing skills. You guys have an very sweet workshop and very nice cars.

@@VAGTechnic Yes, that would be nice! I guess I will loose you guys at the red light district?😉😉🤣🤣
Very interesting video. Completely cures me of any urge to own one. Two major failures. Parts unnecessarily expensive, especially the charge cooler which really ought to be warranty or at least some "goodwill". Very much like older Audis having owned a B2 & B3 90s and still own a C4 A6 with the inline 2.5 diesel. 26 years and over 340k which just service parts. Never had a warning light on......
Working on a friends B6 A4 with the 2.5 V6 TDI which had suffered from the cam lobes shifting around breaking a couple of rockers we realised that it almost has more parts in one cylinder head than the whole of my inline 5 cylinder engine..... Is this really progress?
What an absolute nightmare. So complicated, I’d be shitting myself every time I’d drive an Audi v6s or v8🤯. Maintenance must be more expensive than maintaining the wife and kids🤪
Actually on older models its not even bad and the drivetrains are pretty strong and reliable
Bro it’s total shit
That's why I stopped at 2016/2017 models...too much complexity unless you have deep pockets. Just sold a 2007 S4 because it just became a handful.
rich mans toy. soon as the warranty is up u get shot of it.
i wouldn't own an audi for free. over complicated shite.

I rather watch this than any series, any day! Should ask Sir David Attabborough to narrate this, as beautiful :D Life of a Vag Technician. Great work! Looks like a flawless quality driven business! Well done! Watching pleasure!
Excellent video. Would have nightmares putting that lot back together
i love your vids!! soundtracks are wicked!!!, presentation!! is wicked!!
Wow...that was some diagnosis...rocker arm seizing and actually moving the cam position lobe along the shaft...can't believe the amount of crud on the inlet valves seeing it's only done 40k...and the intercooler failing after such a short time...given the price of spare parts it says a lot about the poor Audi/WV quality of parts...my 2008 zFord Ranger camshafts are only £45 new..can't wait to see the rebuild...looking at your workshop it would seem most of the cars you have in there have got their engines out......👍👍
Did they say was this from lack of oil changes Wrong oil used. Over revving?
Ouch. I’m definitely sticking with my classic AAN.
Firstly, top video, excellent diagnosis I’d definitely come to you guys in a heartbeat with my car! Secondly, I was in the process of buying one of these but paused due to several factors. That pause allowed my wife some time and as a result we bought a new horsebox, seriously expensive thing with very costly maintenance I constantly complain about! That said, it’s now looking cheap compared to running and maintaining one of these! Feel like I’ve dodged a bullet, won’t now be getting a B9 S4, certainly not one with any sort of mileage on!
Very knowledgeable 99% of people wouldn't have a clue top work
After watching this I'm glad I have, and work on my older Audi engine ABY S2... 28 year old and still runs like a 5 pot should
It was looking promising at the start of the first video ,,, but its gone downhill somewhat since then. But well done , just one of those things I guess , my old 2.5 diesel allroad did something similar when the cam lobes wore , the followers just fell off a few valves and into the head luckily a set of cams and followers sorted it out.
Good job guys. BR from Poland ;-)
Super impressed by the diagnostic! If I ever move to England I know where to service my Audis. But the thing that raised my eyebrows the most is the case of insurance or lack of insurance. In Sweden owning such a expensive car you would have a insurance that covers a blown engine. 5 years (80.000km) or extended (8yrs 100.000) and it would cost between 150-300 quid for owner too have the engine replacement 🤷♂️
I think the engine has been tuned, that'd often make the warranty invalid.
@@simontist of course, they said that at the beginning 🤦🏻♂️
Nice video, a nice reminder again, why these new audi engines/cars are only good for lease and before the warrant expires, let them go...
PS: One of the best audi engine is the old 5 cylinder.
Likely the tune made the engine run much hotter than the OEM cooling can deal with causing lubrication and cooling failure. These engines already run hot with the OEM tune. You definitely need upgraded cooling for any stage 1+ tune to retain some reliability.
No, it's a known failure point, Audi fixed it at 06/2018.
Water meth is the answer, makes the engine run a lot cooler. Also the cats being in the engine bay create too much heat so go catless and ceramic coat them. Bigger Wagner charge cooler is a must.
You have a good channel and come across as very professional and honest guys. IMO these German cars are vastly over complicated and unreliable. I wouldn't own anything like this but if I did it would not get remapped and would be well cared for. You're doing a great public service making Audi victims aware of how deep the water can be. Thank you.
Audi victims are in deep water when selling or maintaining. So unless they lease and turn in they will be going broke trying to keep these cars for more than 100k.
Anticipation has never been so high 😭😭😭
Hey mate, great video! Any issues to look out for an Audi S7 65 plate? I get it serviced with Audi but I’m keen to get a full health check done to see if there’s any obvious issues

Great video! I’m guessing this was an early b9. Manufacture date before 6/19. Audi identified this issue and updated the rocker arms.
As a mechanic I’ve never thought Audi as a well thought out engine designer as in this case !
After watching this, I'm very glad to have the supercharged 3.0 CREC. Engine out for carbon cleaning? No thanks. Great channel - subscribed!
Going to stick with my little Peugeot. Thanks for putting me off this nightmare 🙂👍
Fair play for taking this on when the dealer wouldn’t, great expertise, feel for the owner, you don’t expect all that after so little driving. Great video as always
This explains why the dealer wanted to replace the engine. They have to warranty the job, parts and everything.
Metal shavings in the oil is no bueno.
Thanks 👍
Patiently waiting on the next vlog
i rather have any JDM sport car than any VWAG or european , thank you for sharing the awesome video VAG Tec !
Amazing Intro :D Great Job with Audi.
If a recall correctly from the earlier video you were getting timing error messages, I,guess that’s not so surprising now. If it had been me I would have wanted to take these heads of first and put a scope down to look around and see if you can see any physical damage given the metal particles in the oil story you were supplied with.
Lovin' the GTA theme music dude, takes me back!
Iv had a similar issue on common rail VW Diesel engine. You may find when camshaft removed from carrier there is oil starvation on cam carrier and as it’s line bored may need new ones which is expensive. This usually happens through to much heat!
Coming from an LS guy with notorious rocker arm needle bearing failure, hopefully you find all the needles before reassembly. In the American Engineered(haha) LS those needles work their way down to the oil pan, eventually getting sucked into the oil pump and wreak even more havoc than the part actually failing.
OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY...... sorry to see what you have found, but thank you for sharing.
Great video and job 😊🙌👍🍀
Looks like a nightmare to work on. Great insight tho 👍
Wow..impressive video to see you strip that engine.. thank you very much..subscribed
Very helpful. Thanks!
Great channel, just subbed 👍
The cleaning of the inlet valves is a manual thing, since no fuel will flow over the valves, no fuel additive will work.
Great work gents. Fix her up and bang it back together and you just saved the owner 10,000 pounds. Nice one
Thank you great video. well done
Does it mean that the Porsches with the same 2.9 can suffer from the same problem too?
damn, you guys are awesome.
Ill always be into audi/vw, but damn this seems to be really wild engineering
I need to watch part 3 😁
Curious - could you flip (rotate) the engine while its out, so the inlet ports were facing upwards, to then walnut blast?
I would not in a million years buy a car with this engine.
Or any brand new car. It's not only the complexity and unnecessary over engineering that appals me. It's the insane amount of work you have to do to maintain or repair these. You can't reach anything without removing the engine.
The keeping cost is insane I think 😂
I completely agree with what he said in the video, 2.7TT is an amazing engine. Simple yet powerful. Also the 1.8T is still a phenomenal engine.
Yeah absolutely all car companies should be made to produce an engine and transmission that will last at least 500,000km with nothing more than simple servicing and if not they should be made to fix at they’re own cost.
Cant wait to see the final cost in parts.
£17000 which is what Audi had previously stated for new engine
I have a regular A4 B9 with the 2.0L Turbo. Got an ECU tune on it and it's more than quick enough for normal roads. Hopefully my little 4 banger won't have any of these issues! :O
Really interesting to watch. My B9 S5 currently has its engine out at a local garage as there isn’t any compression in one cylinder. Garage suspect its due to rocker arm issues 🤦🏻♂️ Audi main dealer say they do not seen regular issues on these engines!! Really keen to see how this all ends up as you are further ahead on this car than they are on mine - hopefully I won’t have the other issues that plague the 2.9 though???
If you have no compression that’s bad …
@@VAGTechnic oh god please don’t say that! Any idea what might be causing that then?
same problem here s5 b9 100.000 km same story
@@privatprivat5431 did you fix and keep the car or sell on in fear it would happen again? Found out now mine has damaged the crankshaft and cylinder head!!
@@Ben-hk9hc No, it is in the workshop at the moment and the engine has yet to be removed. I had shavings in the oil, which would mean my entire engine was gone. Was your car stock? What are you doing now?
With that much coolant, this fault must have been present for a long time. When you drained the oil it was brown, so guessing there was coolant in there and it’s gone all round the engine. Could the coolant in the oil have caused the bearings to seize? If so, what else has it damaged. Great work btw, you guys make it look easy!
Oil did not mix with coolant , coolant was getting inside combustion chamber and obviously it burn that’s why it was smoking white a bit when we started . Don’t think the engine will have internal damage , oil look sh1t on camera because of my flashlight. Will see in next video what will happen 😋
@@VAGTechnic Appreciate the reply, thank you! You make a valid point. But with this much coolant running into the chambers, some of it would wash down the bores past the piston rings, into the oil. Something happened to those rocker, either oil starvation OR oil contamination. But that’s just a theory from me. In your next video, will you dismantle the charge cooler to see where it’s leaking?
@@SaqibKhaliq you will get answer in the next video again
@@VAGTechnic what's your opinion about 1.4 tsi 122 engine? (golf 6)
@@jimk7459 not VAG Technic, but I have worked on a fair number of these and let's just say they are not exactly bulletproof. Timing chain needs to be replaced every 65k mls or it could fail, I've seen a couple with damaged pistons (yes that's still a thing) and the wastegate of the turbo wears out really quickly. Coils can go, and if you have a manual 6 speed, those can tear themselfs to shreds too. So plenty of problems but which modern car hasn't these days?
Answer: electric Kia's, those seem to be pretty decent ;)
How the hell can a vehicle manufacturer like Audi be allowed to get away with developing an engine that has so many inherent faults. It’s basically designed to fail
I don't think so. IMHO the main problem is the air intercooler, which is leaky from water side. The coolant is in the engine through piston rings, it's in the oil so lubrication was bad and made these problems with the rock arms and fallen rock arm destroyed camshaft. Why the intercooler is leaky? Because some put there bad tuning box, which overpressured the air intercooler, that's it. I don't thing it's bad engine design, it's bad tuning by bad tuning box. Why ABT tuning has "only" 690N.m and no more, ha ?
@@sm00077 So putting the timing chain at the rear of the engine is a good design then ??
@@TheAllEngineering If there is no need to change timing chain during lifetime, so why not? Of course You need to change oil more frequently then Audi said, so no longlife oil change. I have had no problems with timing chain after 170 000 km in S5 4.2FSI when I sold it and after 180 000 km in 3.0TDI, I still have it. Of course You should know that "lifetime" means 150 000km for Audi.
@@sm00077 Poor timing chain life is a common theme in these engines even when following the prescribed maintenance program. The fact that you have to increase the level of maintenance in order to combat a fundamental design floor is not acceptable. The whole short life of the timing chain stems from poor design. Poor combustion leading to contamination of the oil is a contributor to the short life of the timing chain, which comes about because of poor design. The diesel engines do not suffer from this issue so I would not expect you to have issues with your tdi. 150000 km life is a joke.
Great service! Great evidence of technical knowledge! I'm surprised Audi doesn't pay UA-cam to censor your channel, because for a car of this age and mileage to have such a catastrophic failure screams protentional buyers to runaway from this brand! I never seen so many timing issues documented on one brand regardless of the engine. Awful!
we have to thank freedom of speech for that!
And on top of that they put the timing chains at the rear of the engine so they cannot be easily accessed. They went out of their way to engineer it poorly !!!
wow. I thought the 2.0 EA888 was bad........ this is on another level
What have you heard abt the ea888s? I have a new S3 🥺
Looks like 20years of corrosion! Are they not protected well anymore? On my old Audi's here, they handled corrosion pretty well. Looks like an over-rev? Was it tuned? How many KM? Intake port design is pretty impressive.
Good work! What brand of trolley is that the engine is on?

I'm taking my 2018 3.0 S4 apart because of metal in the oil. After inspection everything looks fine except the cam sprocket shows wear on the teeth. Do you see any issues with the aluminum cam sprockets on this car?
Hello WAG Gods, A question for you. I have Audi A6 C6 2009 3.0 TDI 176 KW powerplant. Which maker you prefer to buy: BGA autoparts or Fai autoparts? For whole chain set? FEBI or SWAG dont offer few things like gears for replace old ones.
Excellent video. The owner should be grateful for what you're doing to vs. replacing the engine. How do you think it happened? Poor maintenance? Using wrong oil? Or, it's an Audi?
My tip is wrong oil, poor service shop not checking for known issues like intercooler failure.

Good grief man. And I thought the B5 2.7 was complicated. I too love the 2.7. I think the 2.7 and the 2.2 inline 5 are hard to beat.

'18 Porsche Cayenne S bought from auction & intake is full of milkshake from LHS turbo inlet PCV hose & manifolds are full. Compression test 210,245,230,225,205,180. Cyl6 slightly lower. Coolant not mixing, no oil all clean. Oil is milkshake though. Engine turns by hand. Might smoke test cylinders next? Hard work to pull engine/trans out & check internals without a hoist. @@VAGTechnic Thx for reply but Cayenne is air to air intercooler. Was bought from insurance company, I’m thinking last owner poured water into the oil. Wow! scary glad I don't own one of these AUDI's great content 😎👍
Cause u can't afford one
I thought my BMW M62tu V8 was complicated. This Audi V6 makes that motor look like a lawn mower engine. That said I'm glad technicians like this exist.
Wrong oil caused rockers to seize? Coolant contaminated oil? In any event, whoever was servicing this vehicle didn't check for known issues like the intercooler failing, leading to the failure of the rockers. Not sure if it was a contributory factor, but the hot V turbo location does generate a lot of heat where nobody wants it.
With all the sensors on that motor seems like a code would be thrown if it had that much water going through it and if not, they got a sensor for everything else but you got coolant going through the intercooler and no way to tell it's gone bad?
It would be really interesting to see what the differences between the two engines from s5 and rs5 actually are apart from single to dual turbo and water intercooler, there's plenty videos comparing the actual cars but I couldn't find any that just highlight the difference between the engines and pretty sure I can't be the only one that's interested to see if there's any other major differences between those two engines.
Two completely different engines lol

I own a 2019 rs5 sportback with 25k miles and I now wish I hadn’t seen this video lol. The state of the valves and the fact they cannot be readily cleaned gives me serious cause for pause. Looking forward to the final diagnosis of this engine, but I may be having second thoughts on long term ownership……

It's a known issue. It was fixed by Audi on models from 06/2018.
Diesel for the win 😅 Diesel valves coke up like this but it has far less of an effect on performance for some reason.

I personally don't think I could own a petrol derived Audi. Diesel one's don't seem to appear as frequently on this channel for issues, unlike the petrol variants, and only then it's the Performance ones of the RS type. If you have deep pockets, then I'd have one (RS6) but I don't, so my A7 TDI will do. Good luck with it. Hope it's easy ownership for you.
