    I have owned year 1 and 2 for 3 years now and had no idea that I could use them for high school! I have been losing sleep trying to figure out curriculum for 10th and 11th! Suddenly I feel so at peace. Next year we will be using both year 1 for the first half of the year and year 2 for the last half of the year

    I love how you have it all planned out and if it doesn't work this way, then you have another way to make it work! Very thorough! :-)

    Thank you for this and your great ideas for alternate methods to implement for high school!! This year I will have a first grader, a junior and a senior, so our last year with all three kids together 😢. We're pretty much done with history for high school and have another plan for government, but now I think I'm going to add one of these TG&TB history courses and have them do it anyway, just for the togetherness and some extra credits. 💞

    You are such a sweetheart! And wow- you’re really good at this. So very thorough and well laid out. We’re about to begin year 3 with my middle schooler and 11th grader so I didn’t need anything, but when I came across your video I was curious to see what you had to say. : ) My high schooler enjoys it and retains it (along with my 6th grade), so we will continue on, but have certainly had times of feeling like, “Do I need to have her do something else instead??” when I read comments everywhere from others with high schoolers. I’m pleased that you enjoy it as well. I don’t want to give up our history time together.

    You have given such great information about how to make TGAB work for high school! Thank you for this video! -- Do you think that if you skipped the audio dramatizations, you could do Unit 1 from all years as "Ancient History," Unit 2 from all years as "World History," Unit 3 from all years as "Early Modern American History," and then Unit 4 from all years as "Modern American and World History?" -- As much as I enjoy the audio portion, to me it seems easy to make history a chronological study this way. Then parents would have an opportunity to add in a lot of supplemental readings per historical period. Just one more suggestion... ;) // "How history has been tweaked and modified over the years based on who is writing the textbooks..."

    • @simplejoyfilledliving
      @simplejoyfilledliving  4 роки тому +2

      I definitely think you could do that for middle school. You really need all 4 books to make 1 credit of American History and 1 credit of World History for high school because there are just not that many lessons (240 lessons for all 4 books combined). This is my opinion, of course (and based on my state which is a little more strict than some). However if you added in supplemental high school resources, I think this would actually be a fantastic approach. You might also email TG&TB and ask for their opinion (on credits) especially if you homeschool in a more lenient state. I have found them to be highly responsive to email questions. Either way, I am sure that you could find a way to make it work in a chronological order the way you would like.

    YES using historical documents was my favorite part of AP history in high school! My brother and I were just talking about it yesterday because it was something I did but he never got to taking the basic history class at the same school.

    • @simplejoyfilledliving
      @simplejoyfilledliving  4 роки тому

      That was our favorite part too. It is amazing the stark difference between what historians say that someone said vs reading the person's actual words.

    Your high school videos are super helpful! I’m gonna have a high schooler next year! 😳😳😳 I’m excited and scared! Lol! I just realized this week that TGATB has this history that can be used for HS. So this video is soooo helpful! Also your video where you explained how you used their Language arts! And all things transcripts....how to issue credits. It’s like a whole new learning curve! Thank you! (We are also probably using Shormann math bc of your recommendation)
    We’ve decided to use a lot of TGATB this year so I’m excited. But we are doing Apologia for science. Do you have experience with their HS science?

    TGTB History is so thorough and beautiful! We have it, but I am waiting until my 6 year old is a little older before we start it!

  • @bethbailey2954
    @bethbailey2954 3 роки тому +1

    We just started year 1 (my daughters using TGTB are in 10th and 5th), and it's my second full year homeschooling. From TGTB FAQs, each year of history counts as 0.5 world history and 0.5 US history, so we planned to do 2 years (and then she could do econ/gov in 12th but sit through family lessons of year 3.
    I love the idea of family lessons and the good and the primary sources, but we have not enjoyed the explorer pack. We felt the info in lessons was not hard enough for her, and the explorer pack was overkill on "old" challenging reading. (She spent way more than 5 hours a week doing history trying to keep up unit 1.) I probably should have jumped ship then and just finished with my 5th grader. Instead, I have spent lots of extra time making up assessments, note taking pages (for both levels), and altering the project plan to a reasonable load.
    I appreciate your suggestions as we decide how to handle moving into next year with a half credit of 2 histories and a middle schooler who wants to continue TGTB.

      I forgot to mention, they're changing it (probably summer 2022) and it will be for K-8, but still offering high school explorers to download.

      They recently changed the their recommendations for credits for high school. But I would be careful with that though. For example if you eliminated History Year 3, and issued credits for only years 1 & 2, you would have given a high school US history credit without coverage of WWII (since it is only covered in Year 3. So I still think it makes more sense to go with what they said originally, which was 1 credit American, 1 credit World History after all 4 years. That way you aren't skipping any major events. This program definitely has its pros, but it is hard to make work for high school. That's why we mainly use it for morning time (we only do the reading) and for selecting honors projects (from the student explorers) for my older daughter to add to her Master Books history courses. Master Books was way easier to use for high school because it created a means of assessments with tests and assignments.

    Thank you so much for this video. We love TGTB and MB. My oldest will be in 9th grade this coming year and I wasn’t sure how I was going to use it for credits. I want him to b included w the family like you said. How rigorous is MB?

    • @simplejoyfilledliving

      My daughter did not find it to be hard. We skipped the writing assignments because she was doing those from TG&TB. The quizzes/daily work questions prepared her well for the tests.

    I found this incredibly helpful, so thank you for your time in compiling. I would be curious to know, having used this with both an elementary and high school level "audience", would you recommend this program for middle school?? My youngest will be in seventh grade this coming year. I know Katie did Challenge A for seventh grade, but if you were picking for that grade level today, would this be a contender?? I have three that have already graduated from our homeschool, and we have been blessed to enjoy many fun and interesting history programs through the years. However, we have never done TGATB or MasterBooks, and I'm considering both of those for this coming 7th grade year and would love to know if you would have a lean towards one of those at this age? Always enjoy your videos, and thanks for fielding a middle school question on a high school video. LOL.

    • @simplejoyfilledliving
      @simplejoyfilledliving  4 роки тому

      Both would be really great for middle school but I would probably go with TG&TB if I had to do those years over with Katie.

    I just wanted to stop by to thank you so much for all this wonderful, informative content. This is my 1st year homeschooling my 8th grader, she was in a small Christian school from Kinder to 7th. My regret is not doing this sooner. My daughter is almost done with History Y1 using the 7-9 student explorer and I will do your recommendation next school year and combine Y1 & Y2 using the 10-12 explorers. We are loving this curriculum. I have a question.
    I purchased TGTB US Constitution & Government with the intention of using it this year but decided to leave it for another year where she would be able to understand it in a deeper way and I didn’t realize it was for 4-8th 😮, -even though I hear it could be used in higher grades. May I use this somehow in Y1 as extra work that would give an honor credit somehow? Or should I just wait until Government and do something with it?
    Again, thank you so much for everything.
    God bless you and your beautiful family.
    -D❤

      Thank you for your kind comments! 💕 you could definitely add it to a high school level government class but you couldn’t use it for honors credit (because it isn’t high school level). Honors should be more work and harder work than a typical high school course.

      I’ve watched your video like 5x today and I just grasp something on your Idea #3. My question is: since my daughter did Y1 with student explorer 7-9 this year (8th grade), may I do Y2 next year school year (9th) with student explorer 10-12? And on 10th grade do Yr 3 & 4?

    • @simplejoyfilledliving
      @simplejoyfilledliving  3 роки тому +1

      I think you could still add it to the transcript if you want to. In most states, work in 7-8th grades can be counted for high school credit as long as you used the student explorer that goes through 9th grade.

    Is it safe to say Master books is a better option because of the assessments and tests? Any cons to MB? Do you have any experience with Notgrass?

    • @simplejoyfilledliving
      @simplejoyfilledliving  4 роки тому +1

      I haven’t used Notgrass but I’ve heard that it is good. I think either MB or TG&TB would be great. MB is an easier option because of the ability to assess with tests. I just asked Katie and we couldn’t come up with any cons to MB for us. I will say though that there is a very clear Christian worldview with MB, though, which might not be for everyone.

      @@simplejoyfilledliving That's great. That's what stopped me about TGATB - I was uncomfortable about the Mormon beliefs written about it.
