    The Good and The Beautiful! Pay this sweet momma!!🤣 Sold! I’ve been on the fence about what to use for LA for my rising 9th grader. This will be our last year of CC so It’s been hard to try and figure out what to use!
    I just want to thank you for all these beyond helpful videos! I’m the kind of person that needs the “visual “ component when having something explained. This momma thanks you big time! 💜

    We have really enjoyed TGAB LA 1 this year for 9th grade. The units are SO BEAUTIFUL and well laid out! I really liked the charts you included and how you broke down each year based on the typical requirements for public school and what colleges want to see. As always, your high school content is just SO helpful!!

    Oh my goodness, Colleen! You are AMAZING!!! The amount of wisdom and knowledge you just shared in this video is so helpful! We obviously aren't to high school yet, but Tanner is heading into middle school next year and I've been borderline freaking out! Seeing the layout for high school gives me vision and direction for the groundwork I need to lay.

    YAY! I needed this one. Thank you for taking the time and being so thorough. I appreciated you showing us examples from the actual materials as well. We did the Essentials portion only of Classical Conversations for sixth grade. I felt that one year was great grammar instruction and I really wanted to carry that momentum forward this year in seventh grade. We have been using Level 7 of TGATB and are nearly finished, and I have been extremely pleased. I look forward to continuing on with their Language Arts. I agree the literature component is extremely important, so I think it is wonderful you added in extra books. Thank you for this.

    I have to say I just love your videos! At first I was terrified watching them as a brand new homeschooler you just seemed to know so much and I felt like a fish out of water. Now that I am 8 months in I can appreciate them so much more. My oldest will be in 8th next year but this is great to watch- you are one of the few moms out there that post high school content. Thank you for all your hard work!

    Being an official "senior citizen", watching this video, you have inadvertently rekindled my love of Language Arts as a subject and writing papers. I didn't love writing till I was in college. But I think I will do my own relearning of the high school stuff. I even loved grammar. Friends used to call me the grammar police during my working years. Anyway, thanks for taking me on a trip down memory lane, even though that might not have been your intent.

I recently contacted them, and there does not seem to be any concrete information on what's next or especially *when.* I guess I'm going to have to do something different for my daughter's senior year next year. I've seen a few video's saying each year also counts as a half credit of geography and a half credit of art but I haven't see anywhere on the website that is mentioned and you didn't mention it either so I'm a little confused there. I appreciate how you explained things as this will be my first year with a high schooler and I am feeling way out of my depth. I haven't heard of needing British LA before either but perhaps it's a different states thing. So you answered lots of questions I had and gave me a few more to ponder. Great video all around.

    • @simplejoyfilledliving
      @simplejoyfilledliving  2 роки тому +1

      Here are my thoughts: for art, count hours. If you can get 150 hours in art, you can count a credit. Or 75 hours counts as 1/2 credit. I doubt you get 1/2 credit per year but I bet you could claim 1 credit for years 1-3. You could also do the same for geography. For British lit/American Lit, go to your state board of ed and see what they require for high school graduation for public school. You may find that it is just 4 years of English. Then if your student is college bound, go to schools that you are interested in or go to several state schools and look for requirements for incoming Freshmen. This is where I found that colleges in our area require 1 credit British lit and 1 credit for American lit specifically.

    Thank you so much for such a thorough and honest review! 💗 My daughter will be a senior this year and she is a little burnt out from Sonlight (she's also done IEW). She had a very rigorous junior year in which she chose to learn about 12 subjects, including two foreign languages (Japanese & Spanish), two instruments (violin & trombone), an AP computer course at the high school, driver's Ed, an honors music club, and studying for & taking the SATs 😮‍💨. She saw TGTB LA for the first time this year and really liked it and wants to do level 3, even though it might be technically considered an 11th grade class.
    We are planning to include all three honors studies in addition to the four books it includes, and possibly some more British and American literature because she also didn't think it was enough books for one year. I'd love to let her have this on her last year, after she's worked so hard, but I don't want this to affect her college eligibility. In your opinion, do you think the level 3, plus the three honors studies and another 3-6 classic books for the year, would be enough to make this a valid 12th grade language arts course?
    Thanks in advance if you can answer, I know this is not a new video. Blessings from Okinawa! 🙏🏼🌺

      @simplejoyfilledliving  Рік тому

      Yes, definitely it would be enough. Also TG&TB are all “high school” level, not graded so they can be done in any high school year. Year 3 is the best for last though because it includes some SAT and college prep writing.

Because of this & needing to eventually take the ACT or SAT, I was thinking about adding in Worldly Wise for some extra vocabulary work occasionally. • @simplejoyfilledliving
      @simplejoyfilledliving  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you, I am so glad it helped!
      We did not faithfully complete all of the art and we did not need an additional elective credit so I did not issue an art credit. However, after completing the 3 years and completing the art projects you could easily issue a credit for art in that 3rd year. Count the hours spent on art (I would also include the art appreciation in each unit). 75 hours = 1/2 credit, 150 hours = 1 full credit. The same can be done for geography. We did not take the geography credit because my daughter had already done geography using Abeka. Therefore, we only issued 3 credits. English 1, 2, and 3 honors and we labeled English 2 as American Literature, and English 3 as British Literature based on the additional reading that I added.

    Thank you for this youtube video. It was so helpful for me when you broke down how to make it an American lit course, as well. How many credits did you assign for Geography per year? .5 credit? What about art?

    • @simplejoyfilledliving
      @simplejoyfilledliving  3 роки тому +1

      These are great questions and I’ll answer with what I would do since we used Abeka for geography prior and didn’t need the credit and we had dance for fine arts and didn’t need art either. I would count hours for each. 75 hours= 1/2 credit, 150 hours = 1 credit. My guess is that after 3 years you would have at least 1 full credit each. If not, I would supplement enough to get the full credit if needed. Assign the credit to the year you gave enough time. So if you have 75 hours each year, assign 1/2 credit each year. Otherwise I would do 1 credit on the 3rd year after 150 hours if it works out that way. I hope this masked sense.

    Hi- entering this discussion late, lol. My 16-year-old son, who has been homeschooled since K, tried out public school last year for his freshman year. (He had some learning challenges early on due to dyslexia and ADD) All along he has struggled with grammar and writing. In PS he had some type of generic LA class. We are pulling him out of PS and bringing him back home for his 10th grade year. This will be my first homeschool high school experience and I am overloaded trying to decide what to use. My initial plan was to use IEW SSS 1C and Fix-it Grammar, plus Classical Academic Press Walking to WIsdom for British Lit. First of all, when I'm planning it all out, it seems like a LOT, especially considering his challenges. I had been thinking the IEW would be a good fit because it is so structured (although just guessing here because I've never used it.). But now after watching a few of your videos, I'm second-guessing my choices... and thinking about putting all of the above on hold and using TGTB. Another thought was to use TGTB along with using IEW at a slower pace. What do you think?

    • @simplejoyfilledliving

We really enjoy EIL, he is completing the first year of it this school year. Even if you just use EIL for a booklist to include more classics from literature, you can’t go wrong. Hi … great video. By the way, how long did your daughter take on the lessons each day? Approximately, how many pages daily? Did you do 4 or 5 day week? Thanks.

    • @simplejoyfilledliving
      @simplejoyfilledliving  2 роки тому

      I scheduled her using homeschool planet for about 45 minutes 5 days per week but I allowed her to take each week and change it up as needed. So sometimes she would block schedule and spend 4 hours or so on one day and do the whole week. It depended on what the assignments were. But a good rule of thumb is 30 minutes to 1 hour per day, 4-5 days on weeks without longer papers. With the larger papers, much more time.

    We will potentially be homeschooling our daughter starting in the fall for 11th and 12th grade. She will be doing US history in 11th grade, so we would like it to also be her American History year. As a junior, can she do TGAB year 2, and make her senior year Brit Lit with TGAB year 3? Or is year 2 specifically for sophomores and year 3 specifically for juniors?

      Katie spends 30 minutes to 60 minutes each day, depending on the assignment for the day. The units only take her about 2 weeks each to complete, and there are 10 units. So that leaves her plenty of time for the additional reading. We schedule her language arts in 2 week blocks, usually. 2 weeks for each unit, and 1-2 weeks for novels not included in the units, depending on how long the novel is.

    • @simplejoyfilledliving

      They technically do not cover British Lit at all right now (all the current years are general years). They do have a future 1/2 credit elective class that has no estimated release date. We added British Lit it in 11th grade by choosing all the extra novels by British authors. We did the same in 10th grade for American Lit with Year 2. This took some advance planning but was very doable with this program.

She wants to major in English in university, God willing but she’s not receiving robust instruction on how to write papers.
