I will share his thoughts on how we can prepare our homeschoolers for college level writing.Thank you for watching!

    My eldest daughter just finished her college education and she was an English Minor. She duel enrolled her senior year at the college she then went to as a college student. In all of her English classss she received A's & A+'s. She did IEW the second half of her 4th grade year, 5th grade & 6th grade years and LTW in 7th, 8th & 9th grades. When I asked her if she felt she was actually learning anything in her Composition & public speaking classes, she said no, as she had learned everything she was doing in class in LTW. She is a HUGE proponent of LTW and encourages her younger siblings to really pay attention and get everything out of it that they can!
    Just wanted to encourage people that IEW & LTW(and Classical Conversations as I believe Logic, Mock Trial & Debate helped as well)are fantastic programs and are really an investment in our children's futures.

Writing is more subjective, and that scares parents. Thank you for sharing these resources to ease our young students into the writing process.

    Such good info from your brother!! Grammar and thesis statements….the things were struggling with this year. 😉
    What he said about literature challenging their morals… this is an important point that Apologetics makes also. If you don’t understand the other side, see where they are coming from, how will they prepare to defend the truth?? Reading Mama Bear Apologetics, the refer to this as insulating, not isolating. It’s way better for our children to be exposed to other ideas under our watch, then to isolate them to where they’re unprepared when they encounter these “bad” ideas. .
    Very good info!!! Now you’ve got me wondering if I should interview MY brother!!! He’s kind of an expert on taking tests like ACT and SAT and getting college scholarships!! I might have to now!!

Another great writing curriculum that is very helpful in preparing for college writing is Susan Wise Bauer's Writing with Skill curriculum. I am so thankful for your videos! I just watched this and another of your videos on why you left CC. My daughter is currently in Challenge A, and we have been struggling a lot. So in that video, you explained ALL that was 100% in my head already about CC and it just confirmed that we will not be going to Ch.B. For the past 2 years, I've been doing Good and Beautiful with my 2nd grader, and my Ch.A has been so drawn to it too. I am just learning more this year about the Charlotte Mason method, so your video on HS level is giving me the confidence to go ahead and switch from CC to G&B. I would love to know what you have done for other subjects in 8th grade. And as you said about other people's false opinions on G&B being Mormon, all my Christian moms think that! What an amazing collaboration, Colleen. Thank you so much to both of you.
    I would like your input on this situation. This is our first year homeschooling. My daughter (currently 8th grader) went to a Christian school and had Principal Honors as well as Presidential Awards etc. In 6th grade things were a bit chaotic, lots of changes and it wasn’t the same, still got A/Bs and sometimes C’s. In 7th grade I decided to transfer her to the high school part in the “sister” school behind. It was not a good year. She didn’t pay attention, stressed, peer pressure, etc… So I decided to homeschool. So this 8th grade year has been great but it’s been a year of going back 2 levels to fill in any gaps, as well as learn everything she missed. She is glad we did that and so am I. I’ve had to do the same with Math. Thankfully she is good in Math and has worked out great. If you go to Level 7 TGTB FAQs it reads: Can I count Level 7 as high school credit? A: The instruction in Level 7 is comparable to 9th grade work.
    I already purchased Level 7 & The Book Studies (level 8) for her to do this coming year (9th). Of course she will read all the recommended books and do the course as it is intended. I believe she will have everything she needs to cover all credits in L/A. What do you think?
    I am sorry for the long story but I wanted to give you as much information as possible. Thank you so much!!!

    • @simplejoyfilledliving
      @simplejoyfilledliving  Рік тому +1

      Generally with homeschooling in high school, as long as the curriculum company says the work is high school level, you should be ok. The only exception I can think of would be if there’s some requirement with your state like an umbrella school or accountability group that would not approve it.

    Awesome video! I’m so overwhelmed. My 9th grader ( son) is using TGATB this year. I strongly dislike writing because it’s not black and white. I don’t feel equipped to grade his papers because I’m not sure I completely understand all the different writing styles. I’m dyslexic myself so ELA was never my strong suit 😅

    • @simplejoyfilledliving
      @simplejoyfilledliving  2 роки тому +3

      This is purely my opinion but to me, tests are extremely helpful in high school for several reasons. They get students ready for test taking that will come in college, they help you teach study habits, and they provide an objective method of grading (which lends credibility to homeschooling for college bound students). TG&TB high school language arts does have tests. Their history does not, which is why we used Master Books as our history spine and TG&TB for projects. We also used TG&TB history to bring our family together for morning time.

    I have a 7th grade boy that is very week in writing. We are very new to Homeschooling. Would you suggest us beginning with IEW?

    Aside from IEW and TGTB, the resources you mentioned are all new to me. Thank you for sharing!
    Do you have plans on doing a video on your entire college application process? I'd be bookmarking that because having grown up and finished university overseas, passing the entrance exam was pretty much all I had to do. I'm still not clear on the whole idea of ranking of applicants, acceptance rates, essays and community service/volunteer records, etc. I can Google it but firsthand accounts are always better, especially coming from someone wise like you. 🙂 TIA!

    I'm sending my son down so that you can teach his Language Arts and grade him. Okay?

    Ok, I have Structure & Style written down to start in 6th grade and use through out junior high for my reluctant mildly dyslexic son. I hope that isn’t behind.
