Prof Tabor, thank you. People forgot that we are to steer towards protection of His creations as narrated in Genesis. They give excuses to harm sentient beings, from human to animals.

Bible did not denounce reincarnation. What Jesus taught, before Paul corrupted it, is to go beyond heaven, because heaven shall pass. The way to reach the Kingdom of Father (out of these multiple world, i.e. Earth, Hell, multiple Heavens as indicated by Jesus) is to drop all desires, possession, and abide to the commandments.
The above is according to scriptures (Exclude Paul).
I am sure Hindu and Buddhist have additional teachings.

Paul reveals that he is as subject to fallible human nature as anyone else as he tells others to think and act one way while he thinks and acts another. He tells others to focus on the soon coming world tomorrow and let the problems and injustices of today go because they are temporary. Yet in this example that affects him personally, he searches the torah to find support and justification for his own present needs being met now!

I believe God is reforming and restoring THIS world. This idea also drastically changed the meaning for me of Your Kingdom come your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
When I was growing up there used to be a saying: "He/she is so heavenly minded that they are no earthly good." Meaning they were so focused on the next life that they were useless as far as practical things were concerned; other people, more worldly people, would have to clean up the messes they created of theirs and others' lives. Haven't heard that one so much lately.
One of the saddest things I have ever read is the ending of Pearl S. Buck's biography of her missionary father, "Fighting Angel." Her father was a classic example of being so heavenly minded he was no earthly good. The way he treated his family was abominable. He, of course, was blind to their wants and needs; God came first, middle, last, there was no room for anything or anyone else. (Which begs the question: why did he marry?) Of her father's death during his last missionary journey, Buck writes, "And so he died, and never knew he lived." What a terrible summation of a person's life! No, give me Robert Frost and his birch trees!
We draw closer to the Creator and show our love for Him by how we deal with others. Like Mark Twain said, it's not the parts of the Bible that he doesn't understand that bothers him.....

@James Tabor do you think Acts 21:25 is a genuine instruction from the Council of Jerusalem, is there any scholarly doubt about this verse that it was added or modified at a later date?
A humans life is so short, there must be an intended purpose that exceeds that life span. John 10:28 I give them eternal life and they will never perish.
Exodus 22:20 "You must not molest the stranger or oppress him, for you lived as strangers in the Land of Egypt."
For failing to keep that Law, Moses predicted this consequence:
Deuteronomy 28:69 "YHWH take you back to Egypt by sea and by land, tough I had promised you: 'You will not see it again.' And there you will want to sell yourselves to your enemies as serving men and women, but no one will buy you."
The idea that we should forfeit enjoying living in the here and now is a very fateful one indeed, but how does Dr. Tabor support the notion that Plato is what Paul is thinking of when he writes 2 Corinthians? Isn’t it also possible, and even more likely actually that the conversion experience Paul claims to have had is the reasoning behind the letters he writes? I’m not asking if Dr. Tabor believes Paul, I’m asking if he thinks the pattern of behavior visible in Paul’s letters can be connected in a logical way to the very strong convictions he had about his conversion experience? I know the story of Tom Sawyer, but I am not thinking of Mark Twain as I write this. And 2 Cor. 4:18 does seem to fit pretty concretely into the whole conversion story Paul gave.
The argument that Paul is not believable could be stated in at least two ways. The first is that Paul just made the whole thing up, and the second would be that he simply misunderstood his experience. The first argument is less likely because it implies he was willing to forfeit a position of power to assume a less influential position in society with all the attached personal hardships that would come with it. Whether Paul misunderstood his experience or not, it would have a lasting and dramatic effect on his life.
A similar account was also given by the Prophet Muhammad. Did he too misunderstand the experience he had? How likely are you to be so committed to a mission that you would risk your own life for it without the mission being important to you? How likely is it that Paul decided to challenge both the 1st century Jewish religious order he belonged to and its Roman overlords based on a whim?
"Very Good" doesn't mean perfect, isn't? Not that I want arguing with anything, I just almost doesn't have any knowledge in this sphere.
Only what I've founded in M. Heiser's book,
"In context, describing the creation as “very good” means that the creation was fit for human habitation and the perpetuation and survival of Earth’s creatures. Had the biblical writer wanted to convey a situation of perfection-where nothing was lacking or in need of any improvement-he would have chosen a word other than tob (“good”). Hebrew words such as tom convey completeness"
How do you think we develop better ideas? By testing ideas and sorting good, bad, indifferent, and downright evil. If you don't understand that, you know absolutely NOTHING about the real God, who is no almighty micromanager of perfect creations.
Looks like Plato got it right and the Jews did not.
