How, When, and Why John the Baptizer Was Marginalized in Early Christianity

  • In this slide illustrated Zoom lecture I explore the ways in which John the Baptist was marginalized from the dominant Jesus tradition that ended up becoming the "master narrative" running through the New Testament. What was he in his own time and place? Can we recover traditions of John, embedded in our sources, that will allow him to emerge as he was--the leader of the early first century Messianic movement that came to be associated with Jesus and subsequently Christianity? This lecture includes much that has been overlooked by millions of Christians, including new archaeological evidence related to John and the early traditions about him, as well as research on the Mandeans--who still exist--and trace their faith back to John himself--and not to Jesus. At the end I offer some personal reflections--on a more emotional level, hope everyone is good with that. It is hard to deal with these murdered figures--John, Jesus, and James, without thinking of them as more than "historical" topics.
    Here is a post from Tabor's Blog--which, by the way, has much more on John the Baptist, that fills in many other details and also includes materials from Hebrew Matthew (Shem Tov version): jamestabor.com/was-jesus-a-fo...

    In my own, personal reconstruction of the historical Jesus, he definitely started out as a follower of John.
    That Mark's Gospel starts with Jesus' baptism by John is the long and short of it for me.

      Neither was Yeshua a disciple of Yohanan, nor was Yohanan a disciple of Yeshua, both represent two different teachers and communities.
      Yeshua explicitly came to Yohanan to be baptised after hearing about the rumors, after his baptism he was directly lead into the wilderness to be tested by Satan. From this point on Yohanan questions the identity of Yeshua, he is a doubter and continues his path. He sent out his disciples to seek affirmation from Yeshua, and the Moschiach confesses by saying that the sick are healed and the dead are raised. Yohanan received the word and was beheaded shortly after, he died in good faith a true believer in God.
      Yohanan's disciples followed Yeshua from then on, having lost one shepherd and falling into the care of another shepherd even greater then the one before.

      @@larocdokarnap3227 1 On the contrary; there were followers of John who remained loyal to him, even after his death, and did not follow Jesus..
      2 The passage about the desert is not historic. That is to say; it is certainly possible that after his baptism Jesus went into seclusion in the desert. However, 1'40 days' is clearly symbolic; 2 when fasting the feeling of hunger disappears within a few days so Jesus being hungry after 40 days doesn't make any sense and 3 the temptation by satan is obviously not a historic account.

    This really linked Josephus and the Gospels in a way that I needed for historicity sake. Calling it the "messianic movement" and "a continuation of the John the Baptist movement" really frames the political aspect of this and I'd never even put 2-and-2 together on how John places a good chunk of the disciples essentially with Jesus prior to the baptism, which is kind of nuts.
    I know it's extremely speculative to say they were all cohorts in this and I normally don't take anything John says at face value, but dang that's incriminating if it's true. Not to make light of it, but I didn't realize that "The Life of Brian" was is essentially more historically plausible than the gospels.

    I see the story of John and Christ as another revelation of the biblical message of flesh and Spirit. John came first, representing the flesh [water birth], and Christ came second, representing the [Spirit birth]. Of course, Christ goes way beyond this one picture, but this is one of the pictures I see in this story. If we're only able to "see" the letter [written word] we'll never "see" the Living Word that dwells between the lines. ❤

    Dr Tabor, I think that your understanding of John’s roll & ministry would be better informed if you reviewed the large portions of the Dead Sea Scrolls that have become available for study in just the last couple of decades.
    As you certainly know, the Israeli Antiquities Authority tried their best to keep these writings hidden. They were made available only after years of legal battles in American courts.
    Dr Ken Johnson has worked diligently on translating them into English. And they shed so much light on the Essenes & their Zadok Priesthood leadership. The Essenes were a major force in 2nd Temple era Judaism. They were not a small cloistered group of radicals. Although, Qumran was a place for the legitimate Priests to study & grow.
    John the Baptizer (I agree, a better translation of his title) was definitely an Essene. In fact his mission statement was exactly that of the entire sect. When John sent word to Jesus asking if He was the Messiah, Jesus responded with a quote from Essene recorded prophecy.
    Their veneration of the Testimonies of the Patriarch’s & rejection of the “Oral Torah” (traditions of the Elders) set them apart from and at odds with the Pharisees & Sadducees, the two other major influencers of Judaism in that day.
    Modern day Rabbinical Judaism is descended largely from the Pharisee traditions (Talmud). Sadducees died out. Some claim Karaite Judaism comes from them. Not really, tho.
    These recent translations turn our understanding of both early Messianic Christianity & 2nd Temple Judaism upside down. The doctrines that Paul taught us in his letters as well as his entire ministry are validated by the Essene writings & commentaries! The Essenes formed the core of the early church. Their doctrines were seamlessly incorporated into early Pauline Christianity. The Gospels & the Pauline Letters are accurately presented.
    Their understanding of Messiah & Redemption was very much in accord with modern, conservative Evangelical understanding.
    And John the Baptizer knew his role as the forerunner of Christ. It is accurately pictured in the Gospels.
    I suspect that Jesus being 100% man with all its limitations, and Who had voluntarily laid aside His Divine attributes for a season - probably didn’t perfectly understand His mission from birth. He did everything during His First Advent as a Man Who was filled with the Holy Spirit. Peter tells us that. I think that He had levels of Progressive Revelation during His earthly Incarnation. As He lived a life of Perfect Obedience, God the Father revealed more & more through the indwelling Holy Spirit to Jesus.
    So very plausibly, as John & his cousin, Jesus, grew in their early lives - they most likely didn’t understand everything about their relationship & their eventual ministries. And that progressive increase in understanding takes nothing away from the voracity of the Gospels.
    The Bible that we have is 100% reliable & inspired by God, Himself!
    Again, I would highly recommend that you and all the folks here look into Dr Ken Johnson’s work. He has a YT channel in addition to 30+ published books.

    The baptism is a cleansing of the body, so it be best to call him John the Cleanser.
    Like Yohanan says there is one coming greater then himself and he will cleanse with fire and spirit, which is the spiritual cleansing/forgiveness of sins, because Yohanan did not possess to authority to cleanse sins (this was done through temple sacrifices in accordance with the law). This is why is referred to as the voice in the wilderness, because he is running a mock operation that softens people up to the coming of the Moschiach, he is basically saying his baptism is ceremonial, but the Moschiach will baptise you for real. The presence of Yeshua announces the end of temple worship, without the temple people cannot repent their sins so they remain spiritually defiled. Note how Yeshua himself never baptised anyone in the scriptures, not a single time he cleansed anyone with water but through words alone. Yeshua being given the authority has reign over the spirits of God, he only needs to say the word and the spirits will obey his commands.
    The baptism of water is symbolic, it signifies the willingness of the sinner to be cleansed and become spiritually proper. The baptism of spirit is not of this world, the eye cannot perceive it, even the heart does not know its presence lest it reveals itself. Most of whom have been baptised only had a mere bathe, their baptism was done in bad faith. Faith in the gospels is not merely about the confidence of faith, rather it is about the spiritual understanding and wisdom that receives the praise of the teacher. False religion and bad faith render the baptism void, it is not the spoken blessing from the mouth that reaches out to the spirits, but from the heart its call will be heard for this is the language of spirits.
    Hear this, that righteousness without religion is still righteousness, but religion without righteousness is murder of the soul. Yeshua taught a way of life, there is no greater worship to God then to live righteously, such a person is worth more then many temples.

    Do you think Jesus' connection to John got him into trouble when he went to Jerusalem? You don't really see this point brought up in the gospels, but, knowing that Herod Antipas knew who JtheB was, and that he and Pilate became friends when Jesus was crucified, and recognizing Jesus movement as a continuation of John's, they decided for this reason (among others, of course marking Jesus as a messiah claimant himself) to have Jesus put to death?

  • @charlesurdy-barnes413
    @charlesurdy-barnes413 Рік тому

    Dr. Tabor's article makes me think about another overlooked implication of Jesus as a person, which I've had to come to grips with over the past 5 years or so. Jesus as a flesh and blood Jew, engaged in what modern Jews called Torah Study. This is where he got his knowledge and teachings: through studying. Not because he himself was a personified contradiction of God. In his mind he would have developed his teachings from John and by studying the Torah and have come to personal conclusion or "revelations" from his Father (God) not because he himself was God. It is really no different than the human founders of today's Christian denomination who began to study the Christian Scriptures and began to believe they were given new revelations (revealings and fresh understandings) and consequently developed novel theologies and doctrinces and eventually their own denomination. In the late 1900's earlly 2000s this process continued began to yield an indivduals personal independent doctrine and church. Hence today we have tele-churches, mega churches, celebrity churches, prosperity churches, empowerment churches etc, all because they studied and came to a personal novel conclusion

    Alright. You have awakened my thoughts and I need some answers. First, Herod's first wife had a Father who came after Herod and basically, took him out. Pontius Pilate was put into exile around the same time. Was Herod's first wife a follower of John? Was she Jewish and was her Father? If so, it could be grounds for the Revolt so many were wanting. Were they getting people ready for the war to come? Did they know this "king/ruler" would come for Herod? If Herod was a convert to Judaism and not being a loyal subject to his people; that would be grounds for this "ruler" to come in and stop the chaos. Also, my thoughts were; is it possible Herod's wife (real one; not the last one) was pregnant before Herod's adulterous affair/marriage? Could she be the the real Mother of the coming Messiah, if she was a descendant of David and could she have been the one who was with his Mother at the crucifixion? I also, wonder if the "this is your Son" comment could refer to her actual son, as in, "This is one you seek", as in the revolt was coming sooner than later? If this is at all possible, then he and John did fulfill their prophecy and did save their people. One greater than he came and Cesar had no choice; but, to make things right or lose Israel entirely. The one whom you seek scared the crap out of the ruler of world. It may have been short lived. Still, affective and accomplished by many who would take the lead until one greater in numbers, society and experience could claim victory. Is this family still in Israel? If so, maybe this is where the next chapter of Israel's story comes to be. I just find it so fascinating. This whole concept of getting the people ready life to be livable again within the walls.

    35:20 -- "John is totally out of the picture" -- Is he? If you read Luke Chapter 3 leading up to that, it says that John is doing his whole ministry and baptizing people. If you look at verse 21 alone, it doesn't say that Jesus was baptized _by John_ but with the verses before it should make it pretty obvious that John was the one doing the baptism.
    Then after this you say in John "the one who I am not worthy to untie his shoe" as if we're exalting Jesus even more than John, but that's not a new development from John. It's also in Mark.
    Am I missing anything? I very well could be as someone who doesn't study this in depth for a living, but these statements seem blatantly wrong, from what I'm looking at. Happy to be corrected, though

    Sir i doubt prophet jhon pbuh was mere only six months elder than jesus pbuh, when jesus pbuh started his ministry he was 29 or 30 years old ,that means prophet jhon was 29 and half years old ie. six months elder than jesus pbuh, prophet jhon already had many followers before jesus began his ministry ,that means jhon was preaching atleast 3-4 years prior to this moment ,because of which he gathered such following, if its so the prophet jhon pbuh started his ministry at the age somewhere when he was 25 years old ie 3-4-5 years prior meeting jesus pbuh, but throughout the history god/yahwe havent given prophethood to ptophets at very young age, prophethood is given when that prophet achives maturity ie. age of late 30s, jesus pbuh was an exception but most of the prophets started preaching when they get age of late 30s.Moses pbuh got prophethood in late 30s or early 40 of his age.

    Dr. Tabor I highly respect your work and study it very much. I have your Genesis translation along with Selections from the Hebrew Bible. I would like to point out when you show the Josephus text and it reads “Now there was about this time, a wise man, IF IT BE LAWFUL TO CALL HIM A MAN, for he was a doer of wonders” To say “For he was a doer of wonders” Implies the previous sentence to be one who does wonders and in my opinion I don’t think a wise man is typically known to do wonders. A lot of the parts you highlight definitely are extraordinary testaments to Jesus leading it to be questioned but that first part does seem odd to me. And I don’t think the next sentence is the effect of the last, though it could be.

    As I lean towards mythicisim, I am very interested in the beliefs of the people who wrote the stories, so I found this very interesting. That M was the sayings of John the Baptist (JTB) fits well with the idea that Paul or his followers (Mark or Luke) overlaid his Gnostic celestial Jesus on a "student" of JTB. If JTB was the source of Jesus's words, does that make Jesus historical? Or is Jesus a myth that uses the words of the historical JTB ?

    All Jews were descended from Abraham. But Jesus was not descended from David, who was from the tribe of Judah, through his mother Mary, because she was instead a descendant of Aaron from the tribe of Levi. We know this because Luke’s gospel tells us that Mary was a “relative” of Elizabeth, who was a “descendant of Aaron.”
    But when Joseph, who was descended from David, married Mary, this also constituted his legal adoption of the son she would bear. The language of Matthew’s genealogy reflects this legal understanding: “Joseph, the husband of Mary . . . the mother of Jesus.”
    So Jesus was the son of Joseph in the full legal sense, because he was adopted when Joseph married Mary, and thus Jesus is also considered to be a legal descendant of David.
    2 Timothy 2:8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David, as proclaimed by ...... Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from ... . This is my gospel, Always remember that Jesus Christ, ... descendant of King David, was raised from the dead. This ...

    I am greatly torn over John and Jesus for some good reasons.
    Mary was told to name her son Emmanuel.
    Zacharia, Elizabeth’s husband, was told by angel to name son John.
    Mary named her son Jesus.
    In Jewish faith firstborn sons are named after their father, and this
    is what Zach wanted. Eliz reminded him the angel instructed to name him JOHN.
    John was the only child born through a SPIRITUAL (GODLY) birth.
    Elizabeth’s womb was miraculously made fertile, young again.
    The seed (thought) of JOHN was given to Zach, who told his wife Eliz she will
    have a son, name him John, he can never drink alcohol because HE IS SPIRIT, born
    SPIRIT, BY HOLY DNA BLOOD.
    Before his birth, Holy Water broke to cleanse the earth before him.
    Everything tied to JOHN, HIS BIRTH makes sense.
    Nothing about Jesus’ birth makes sense.
    Zach & Eliz accepted ALL, gladly.
    Joseph & Mary did not.
    John jumped in the womb. Jesus did not.
    The Mary story serves as the bastardizing of a teacher, a miracle worker, man who
    told others about the very things John spoke. John dipped in water, yet
    BIBLE has no mention of people ridiculing JOHN.
    The High Rabbis, priests didn’t like their teachings being corrected by Jesus.
    INITIALLY, JEWS were the only FORMED CULT with political influence (MANY followers).
    Jesus began contradicting their teachings, money-changing, synagogues.
    TRUTH is what humans follow. Jews couldn’t afford to lose followers.
    IT IS THE PEOPLE, not the religion, who hold ALL POWER.
    John is the Messiah.
    The Jewish rabbis, priests were MORE threatened by Jesus than JOHN?
    ~~~
    Herod was concerned JOHN could turn his enormous following against him
    if he wanted. When the beheading of JOHN was on the table, HEROD
    served Johns head on a platter.
    John never immerse peoples, immersion in water was for the proselytes. John was preaching repentance, but this had nothing to do with sins being forgiven but was a preparation for the coming Messiah who will forgive sins through the Baptism of the Spirit (Born from Heaven) Repentance cannot save, we need faith in Jesus before we repent. Water baptism was a symbol, it came from the law of purification, only Christ blood can purify our sins.
    "God is able from these stones to raise up children of Abraham." - sorry, but what he means here is very different. Converts to Judaism are given the name "son/daughter of Abraham and Sarah". He means "don't feel special just because you're Jewish, anybody can become Jewish." Straight-up non-Christian, straight-up Jewish stuff. And why would John say otherwise? He's a Jew who ISN'T part of the Jesus movement.... he has his own movement, thanks all the same, and it worships an indivisible Deity that is above any sort of physical form forever.
    This might be a statement of the Messianic mode of thinking that one who "comes from the Nations to the worship of G-d" has to convert. It's also might be of the (now standard, then dominant) mode that says that Noahides are a thing, and Gentile G-d-Fearers are fine... but conversion is possible for those who wish it. Either way it means "remember, conversion is a thing and any convert to Judaism is as full a Jew as you are."
    It means, have you forgotten the Book of Ruth? David himself is the descendant of a convert, and she is a "daughter of Abraham" in the absolutely full sense because of it. (BTW, they're standing in the former territory of Moab.)
    Later on, when Jesus DOES enter the equation, there will be Jamesians and Ebionites. But at this point, from John's point of view, Jesus is probably at most an ally. If Jesus is more than an ally of John's, he's at absolute most a co-Messiah as you said. To John, Jesus is not G-d because only G-d is G-d.
    John the Baptist never baptized anyone! In Judaism, ritual immersion in a living source of water-be it a river, the ocean, or a ritual immersion bath (mikveh)-is self-immersion and if another person touches you while you're fully immersing yourself, then it's invalid and you remain ritually impure. Yochanan was the Causer of Ritual Immersion. This "causative" tense in Hebrew just doesn't translate into the Greek. Yochanan was causing people to ritually immerse themselves in the Jordan River by virtue of what he was saying, which was, "Repent! Because HaShem's Rulership is a present reality!" I don't doubt that Yochanan's disciples went into the water with those performing ritual immersion, because you need someone there to witness that you've gone completely under the water. Why? Because even if a single hair is sticking out of the water or floating on top, then it's invalid and you remain ritually impure. That's why Philip went into the Mediterranean Sea with the Ethiopian eunuch. It wasn't to dunk him backwards, like some evangelical pastor, which, again, would invalidate one's self-immersion; and it wasn't to use a bowl Mandaean style to pour water over the Ethiopian's head. Philip went out into the sea to make sure that the Ethiopian had fully immersed himself per the halakhot and custom of the proto-Rabbinic Jewish Sages. www.chabad.org/.../Positive-Commandment-109.htm
      Matthew 23:25-26
      Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
      Matthew 15:2-3
      Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!" Jesus replied, "And why do you break the commands of God for the sake of your tradition?"
      The profane can only defile the profane, and only the spiritual can defile the spiritual. Water can only cleanse the profane for water belongs to the profane, and only spirit can cleanse the spirit for it belongs to the spiritual.
      You don't have what the law requires of you to repent your sins, God has allowed for the destruction of your temple, you have become godlessness. Without baptism of the spirit there can be no repentence of sins, those defiled by sin will not enter the presence of God and his chosen, they will never know the kingdom of God, neither the kingdom that is now nor the kingdom that is to come.
      As Yohanan would say; "Repent and get baptised, and the kingdom of God receive you."
    John the Baptist is "Jesus" after his spiritual resurrection or New Birth when he was exalted and received his NEW NAME. Isaiah 62:2, Phillipians 2:9-10. The same new name all elect sons receive. Revelation 3:12. He was written as a new character when it was really referring to the New Man or new creation. Somehow the gospel editors decided to make it into two separate men. Isaiah 40:3 clearly states the one calling in the wilderness will prepare the way for THE FATHER which we know is Spirit. It says nothing about another messiah after John, the greatest prophet to ever live or born among women. A horn of salvation as Matthew and Luke describe. The story got corrupted and edited to promote a pagan virgin birth and a God-man. Both lies of Rome.
    No human being is EVER exalted to co-equal status with the Father. Another abomination. Even Jesus/John confirms this. "Why do you call me good, there is none good but God". And also in I Cor John/Jesus says that after the Son has reined and we have out all things under our feet, then the Father will be all in all. He has given us the power and authority temporarily by his Spirit to rule as kings and priests, prophets and suffering servants until His, the father, manifest kingdom is revealed.
    John says he must decrease ( carnal old man, 1st Adam) so he can increase (the new man the new creation by the spirit, the last Adam). He's referring to being born of the spirit. John is Jesus which is actually Emmanuel not the name Jesus. We are told this name in Isaiah and Matthew. The word for salvation in hebrew is yeshua. Its a term not a name. When "salvation" comes its referring to the New birth by the Spirit of God being formed within us as a new man. Not a separate messiah named Yeshua. The main reason the characters were made two men was because in the 1st century the sages believed in the doctrine of Messiah ben Joseph and Messiah Ben David, two anointed ones. They are actually one seed the seed of David who was conceived in sin and raised by Jesse. So he has a unknown biological father raised as a son of Jesse from Judah. The two sticks become one thru sin or adultery. Which is another spiritual metaphor. For Sion joining with Jerusalem. And your sons will marry you as Isaiah said. The Sons of God marry the virgin daughters of Sion, the purified gentile bride.
