I remember the triple/triple days, what a great time. I had zrts, had buddys that had xlt and xcr,f3 and srx.i can say this stock out of the box the cat,doo and yammy were close l, it was back n forth.the polaris triple was never close.my good buddy had an xlt and put slp pipes on…i believe those pipes added 15-20hp to the 600 polaris triple.now that helped get in the game with the rest.after that.we all started doing stuff to our sleds.friendly competition drag races n such.what a time
you are correct back in the mid 90s the triple pipe sleds were so cool the sound and the power and the suspensions were getting much better it was a great time to be involved in snowmobiling my first trip was a 97 zrt 600 i really liked that sled
I had a 93’ XLT and it definitely didn’t win drag races. I put over 10,000 miles on it in four years and sold it. I heard it finally blew up around 14k miles. Reliable as hell since it only had like sixty horsepower.
If you're looking for triple triples the 98 Yamaha SRX 600 or 700. If you're just looking for a 6 or 700 triple long track the 97 or 98 mountain max is a good choice. I don't think you could go wrong with any of them. However if you could find a long track SRX which are triple triples I think you would be impressed. Not only do they rip but they sound amazing, they have their own distinctive roar.
Snowmobiling was HUGE around here in the 90’s, the ditches were immediately covered in tracks as soon as any snow fell and it was common to see packs of 50 sleds or more at any given time. Now a days you just don’t see that anymore, I’ve seen 1 sled out riding this year so far….and it was an old Indy.
Same here, grew up in Iowa the ditches were like highways for sleds now like you said you’ll see maybe a track or two in the ditch. Might be because a lot of folks are going mtn sleds and riding
DUDE. Any SkiDoo didn't come alive until the late 90's & SC10 chassis. I know-I had a 94 Grand Touring 580-SC7-that thing was a BEAST-heavy as all get out-but Lordy the POWER-with my backside on it & the now Ex on t he back-better than a Buck 10 on Lake Tomahawk WI-and she still had more to give. Fast forward to the Fall of 2000-stumbled upon a dealership in Madison WI that dealt with new non current machines. Damn near bought a Formula 670-1998 do believe-but instead bought a 2000 ZR500EFI for me & a Z370 sled for the ex. That ZR was FAST. Pipey as well. Start 1st pull every single time-even at -25F. And had the chassis to handle it as well.
I bought a 95 Polaris 600 Triple XLT in practically mint condition that had been sitting in covered storage up on a pallet for 5 years since being ran. I cleaned the carbs and did a compression test and spark test and it fired up and ripped like it was new again. Rocket sleds for that time!
When they're running well, triples are a force to be reckoned with... Those XLT's were a PITA to get running right... Had a ZL 600, when it wasn't fouling plugs, it couldn't be beat, but you had to carry many spare plugs...
I am sooooo jealous of the powder extreme. I still have a 97 EXT triple that I bought used in 1999 when I was 16, also very rare but the white powder extreme is the one I was dreaming of day and night 😊
Thank you for doing this, great sleds! Brings back great memories! I had an XLT with pipes and loved it. I road with friends that had the Powder extreme AND THE MACH III. I spent a lot of time riding in the areas that you filmed in. Thanks again, keep it up!
Had the sled of the year in 93…the XLT Indy Special. That sled was fun and had the small windshield. Looked good and had a blast with it. Cuz had a Formula 3 exactly like the one you have. That sled had amazing top end speed. Fun channel 👍👍
I got an XLT triple touring sled that is a lot of fun. Probably pick up an old mountain sled this winter. These machines are classics. Ive even got a hotdogger on the exhaust.
Dude, this video just brought me back. Loving your content man. Making me want to get back into the older sleds. There's one thing you forgot about when you said the fun of the '90s. That's the handlebar smashing your knee when you're trying to turn. How else are you going to remember that you went riding the day before?
Its been years since i rode a sled. My friend had an 87 trail that needed rebuilding every year, but he would only rebuild 1 cylinder so the next year the other side would burn out, but he had the dingle ball process down to about 3 hours. I also split the tunnel on it and our friends dad repaired it with a beat up cake pan, like a bandaid, my friend stole from his moms kitchen. His mom probably had about 20 cake pans but sensed one was missing and grilled us about it.
I had the Polaris 600 Triple and the Polaris 700 Twin, both mid 90's I don't remember the exact years. I much preferred the Twin over the Triple. the Triple was lots of fun but the Twin could be downright scary. I broke the tunnel on the Twin hitting a water bar buried in powder, and almost launched myself off a cliff in the woods. Lots of fun!
Analysis for other brands other than cat was truly unbiased ,along with the history of engineering , Analysis was accurate.the history of the snowmobile let alone the company's history is good knowledge to enjoy.
Had a 1998 Formula 3 600, Long track, put a clutch kit , v force reed valves, bar riser, left had throttle, powder pro skies, and a 144x2 inch paddle track, filled gas in Moran Wy, 3 guys there from Wisconsin, One said formula 3 with a paddle track, they had to check it out
Yamaha had the V-Max 4, didn't come out with the triple till about 1997 with the Red Head SX 700. they also got rid of the pogo style front suspension and went to trailing arms.
You shoud've seen the 91 phazer I bought for my nephew. Sat for 8 years and had a rat make a home in it. It runs like a champ now and we're hoping to get to rip on it this winter out here in South Dakota.
I'm sure somebody has said it, but the seat on the XLT doesn't seem to be attached at the back. On the first run, you can see it flopping around on the jump.
We try to go up beaver after they close, and the hill climbs. Try and have a good time in the sun. Donno if you want to come up this year would be cool
It's cool that you can enjoy all these snowmobiles when you're clearly an Arctic cat fan. By the way the Yamaha SRX red head triple is a legendary snowmobile lol
Srx Yamaha 700 triple still sounds the best hasta be the one with triple Pipes stock I believe would be like a 99 to 2001 year great sounding machines great sounding sleds also 1999 skidoo Mach Z triple great sounding sled triple pipes stock 2 😎
I agree with the 99 Ski-doo Mach Z big Ole 809 triple triple. The Mach 1 with the 700 triple triple is a great choice as well. Stay away from th 98's the pipes $ucked on those. I think we are giving Rocky to many choices, lol decisions, decisions Rocky. 😂
I wrecked one of the prototype Formula 3's in 95. Mine had a silver tunnel and 116 HP, first year production had the black tunnel and 125 HP. Clutch engaged at 4500 rpm. There was no going easy on the throttle. They made 400 prototypes.
Bought a 96’ F3 in dec 95’ out of the box it roasted zr600’s and XCR/XLT 600s in a drag. The handling was the worst though , I’m sure you remember that 😂

I’ve only ridden 2 triples my whole Life. 97-98 vmax 700 and a xlt 580 unknown year xlt was a turd, the vmax flew though. Always bought twins because I was always told triple the trouble
Still have the 1998 XLT Touring short track , 12 inch rear suspension , sold my 1998 XLT Special , it was much faster , 5mm longer stroke , extra-10 , big difference ! Both single pipe , both get 13 mpg , that’s nice , 9 to 10 mpg sucks ! But I do like my SLP performance edition motor in my 700 Switchback , 102.7 on the rode , Speedo says more , but the formula for gearing and top speed is 102.7 mph , Math , Reality , still a thrill ! Buddy passes me ? What a Rush , that what he rides
I grew up around these. Only lake riders like a triples, to heavy for ditch banging. Middle cylinder always popped cause cooling couldn't keep up. Maybe it was more skidoo, polaris triple was good better
Probably most comparable Yamaha would be an SRX mountain. They only made them I thing for 1998 and 1999. Not easy to find. 700 triple triple. They also made mountain max editions with the 700 redhead single pipe. Or you get get the big dog vmax 4 ST/mountain. Yamaha pretty much sold a long track version for all of their machines.
The formula 3 has a definite timing problem, more than likely carbs, and the xlt sounds a bit better for sure, but the Arctic cat sounds sick, like not good... the best, when tuned prefect, are the skidoo triples
Running a formula III against powder sleds…. It’s not a comparison… they are totally different sleds… a formula III is a straight line beast. Apples to oranges depending on the snow. One is better in powder one is better on the lake.
Yamaha had the 1993 v max 750 which was a 4 cylinder sled cool concept but not real fast !! The vmax 600 were dogs around 90 hp never seen one on the gun hit 100mph
That ski doo doesn’t sound like it’s running right. I own one and sounds like it still needs carb work. Low end the it’s not coming to life. And my sled is bone stock. All OEM parts
