The 1995 F150 is terrible for towing

  • I pulled multiple trailer loads with the 1995 Ford F150, and have found it to be very lacking in the towing department. While the truck does well driving around town, and hauling a load in the bed, when it comes to pulling a trailer it's definitely underperforming. Whether it be pulling the tandem-axle trailer empty, with a light load, or with a very heavy load, it is not capable of performing the task properly. I find that the truck is just working too hard to use it as a dependable towing rig without fear of damaging the truck.
I had to switch to the 2017 Ford Explorer Sport when it came to towing trailers, and it does a fantastic job by comparison. I could barely tell that the trailer was even behind the SUV during any trips with the trailer.
The Explorer will definitely be my go to when towing for now on.
After the 1995 F150s disappointing ability to properly pull a trailer I've been seriously considering selling the truck, and upgrading to a modern Ford F250 HD. I've owned multiple modern F150s, so I've been there and done that. I've not owned a F250, nor a diesel, so owning one has me intrigued, and leaving strongly considering the upgrade.
I've taken a couple of F250s on test drives over the last week, and now it's a matter of finding the right one for me.

The 5.0 302 is way cheaper to modify than buying a new truck. You can build those motors for less than $5,000. That’s with 400+ horsepower to the rear wheels and 450+ foot pounds of torque

The 1995 F-150 with a 4.9 I-6 engine has a max tow rating of 5,300 Pounds. With the 5.0 V8 it is 6,800 pounds. With the 5.8 it is 7,200 pounds. Newer trucks are like 3/4 ton trucks from the 90s. I see you also have 33 or 35 inch tires. This changes your overall gearing to a lower rear end ratio. Think of it like like riding up hill in the wrong gear on you bicycle. You had to pedal harder in the wrong gear on a hill. I hope this helps. I love how clean your truck is. Keep it forever. I should have never sold my 95 with the 4.9 I-6 with the manual transmission.

Of course I drive no faster than 55mph to get the best performance from the stock engine and transmission. Just wondering. I looked this video up in reference to me possibly trading my

So with your experience.. would you consider it to be a good trade?
I’m intending on only pulling a pop up camper that has a slide out so it’s a little heavy and the Toyotas 4.7L does struggle a bit too pull it. And it just sucks the gas while doing it. We all know it’s the earlier generation of sequoia and 4.7L weren’t really meant to pull much.

Much of the trouble you are having is due to the oversized tires on that truck. If you have the stock 3:55 gearing in the truck and you swapped those larger tires on there you have just changed the rear gearing to about a 2:90.
Not even close to ideal for towing. Put the stock size tires on it and it will be a whole different animal. Big tires and lifts look kool, but don't work for chit in a towing situation.

@@RobsGarageKC It all depends on the tire size. I don't know if you are running 31's or 33's. On your truck the 3:55 gears were standard being a 4 wheel drive. Stock tire size was P235/75R15. By adding the larger diameter tires it affectively lowers the gear ratio. Thats what makes it slow off the line and seems like it is laboring to get the truck out of the hole and moving. When you add the larger tires you also need to counter that effect by raising the rear gear ratio to keep things in sync. If you are running 33's with the 4:11 gears using the stock parameters as a base line, the final drive ratio would equate to somewhere around 3:70. That would help out your towing situation tremendously and still be a very livable ratio for street driving. Out of the hole acceleration would be slightly better than stock but your gas milage would not suffer as a result due to the overdrive tranny.

Get one with a manual transmission, and a 300 i6 or a 351 v8 and your opinion will change. Also keep it stock hight or use a drop hitch. The 5.0 Windsor is bogged down from factory and isn’t good for towing stock but if you swapped on a well designed aftermarket upper intake manifold it would have plenty of power.

A drop hitch would definitely be beneficial with the ride height of this F-150

@Jonah Belanger I've always turned it off, since day one, as a preventative measure. Didn't see a need to be shifting into overdrive with an older, high mileage tranny. My buddy that does transmission repair work, suggested it, so I figured I'd listen to him. 🙃

5.0s are garbage… But anything previously mentioned like the straight 6s, 351s it’s a different story. The 5.4 isn’t bad either. That’s what I currently have as my tow pig and I’ve personally have hauled 8500 no problems.

BBK-1515 headers if using GT40P HEADS
