Driverless trucks 😂😂😂😂😂 , I am a retired big rig driver, being a trucky is actually like being a problem solver , because every single day different problems crop up that you as a driver have to deal with.
In Australia we have some driverless mining vehicles , but they are on a set route and they are monitored constantly.
Imagine a big rig with no driver , it gets a flat tyre , you get road detours due to all manner of reasons , you get obstructions on the road from animals to fallen trees , break downs , bridge and road axle weight restrictions, and then there's just dealing with other crazy drivers on the road ,
Sometimes freight shifts or needs securing on route .
And a truck being driven by a computer...... What could possibly go wrong 😂😂😂😂 .

I am not saying it will happen.
Road marking are not needed if the system already has that information. Where a truck is expected to drive in the snow they could have the roads mapped with GPS so the trucks don't even need to see the lane markings.
Do expect a driverless truck to move when human drivers can't? It is possible just depends on the implementation. The real danger is not the truck but the other traffic on the road. We need to get to where all vehicles on the road have V2V. In part a radio beacon to let other vehicles know where you are and how fast your going. Where you will be turning or changing lanes.
Sounds like pie in the sky but in time it will come.

What we need is a car company start up that says they will make dumb cars or basic automatics with good mileage and average performance with the bells and whistles seperate and the car a collection of moving parts rather then these modern EVs so its easier to replace and use same parts from generation to generation so its cheaper to insure and replace parts. That should save a car manufacture costs.

The cheap little ICE car is near impossible to build and sell at a profit. You cheap little car will have EFI EI air bags, crush zones and a cat at the very minimum. Will not sell well w/o AC Better to have Tesla build a bolt like car. Fewer moving parts. Save thousands on fuel and maintenance. We are seeing the first lifetime warranties on BEV batteries.
With the Federal EV incentives Tesla is now selling the RWD long range model Y 363 EPA range for $35K. in the US More to come.
Having said that I would like the car you describe in a hatchback. Had a plymouth horizon with EFI. Loved that little car. This car was about $6K new in 1986. If anyone built that car today it would be $25K but nobody is building them because they are not very if at all profitable.

Cameras driving in the direction of the sun can experience glare and white outs which prevent computer systems in some vehicles from knowing where other people or vehicles or objects are potentially ,causing them to crash into things they do not see at high speed. That potentially includes sunlight glaring off the side of large ve-hicles. Self driving vehicles that can not see and do not know where they are have a bigger chance of crashing. As in if self driving vehicle stops seeing 👀 what is in front of it then it might crash into stopped traffic at 60 miles an hour. Some cameras can see through extreme glare. It does not mean a self driving ve-hicle has that type of camera. In a batle between a self driving vehicle at 60 miles an hour and a concrete barrier or wall it can not see because of bright sunlight or other bright light it is most likely that the brick or concrete wall is going to win.

Easy answer: Congress keeps raising the wages on starting salaries. If you have been working for years to get to $15.00 an hour and now a person with zero experience is starting at $15.00 an hour, you want to go to $30.00 an hour, so it goes up the line. As of Jul 3, 2024, the average hourly pay for the Auto Industry jobs category in Detroit is $25.95 an hour with several years of experience so now they want $60.- $80.00 an hour. So by automating the jobs they don't have to play the game of the government telling businesses how to run their companies. They always say there are 3 branches of government but we the people are the 4th and most important and can make it without them. We make the money and without us, they have none.

    • @Matthew-ix1mq

Well, there’s no reason for the older workers to get a raise, the toilers in the vineyard thing. This attitude is common but really, the older workers are responsible for not advocating for better wages in the past. If government doesn’t tell corporations, which are legal constructs designed to shield the rich from liability, what to do, you can enjoy the good old days. You remember? No safety, thalidomide, asbestos everywhere, no pensions ( my old factory was bought out and,lo and behold, the new company declared bankruptcy! Yay, they don’t have to pay the pensions that were part of the sacred contract. But that nasty old DEEP STATE, said in a deep, ominous, had forced the poor oppressed corporations to pay into the meddlesome pension trust fund. Sadly, we are receiving our pensions. Oh that mean government interference.

100% . LONG gone are the days where America had the vehicle market pretty much to themselves . Other people , living in other countries now have many brand options . The best we can do is try and bring back all the manufacturing that when can , back to America .

Henry Ford put a lot of horse carriage driver out of business. If the autonomous driving really works, then it has potential to replace millions of people. The difficult thing is the last mile, when I tried Tesla self-driving software, it went to my home, stop on the street, do not know drive into the drive way.

CANDO, 5s, TQM, Lean Manufacturing, Six-Sigma... yes, there are companies screwed, because they are worried about money, not offering quality, affordability and experience to their customers. Thank you. You're welcome.

They've been dreaming about autonomus trucks for the last 25 years. Not gonna happen anytime soon, especially in Canada where winter last 6 months. 🥴
