When I was younger, years ago, I worked for Cal-Pac Roofing, we laid the metal roofs Decra Tile in California over existing wood shake roofs, worked out just fine believe it or not!

Over my shingles I put a 1x4 from one end to the other at two feet and 1/4 inch apart. Then I cut 3/4 inch foam insulation. And put it between. Then I put my metal roof on. I can walk on it without any give in the metal. No kinks or dents.

My dad did 2x4 furring strips and 1.5 in board in the 1980s. Still looks good. Is a standing seam roof.
