  • Episode 61: Kidney Failure Symptoms: 19 Kidney Problem Signs Most People Will Miss. Learn the 19 kidney problem symptoms you can not ignore which may indicate kidney failure or low kidney function. Detecting signs of kidney problems early can allow for changes to your diet, lifestyle, or treatment to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease, possibly allow you to prevent kidney failure and limit further kidney damage. Many of the signs and symptoms on this list can be caused by other health problems and only a doctor can determine the cause. The sooner you address any problems, the better your chance of preventing kidney failure or slowing the progression. If you are experiencing any of these kidney failure symptoms, consult with your doctor immediately.
    Persistent Fatigue - being tired all of the time
    Healthy kidneys make a hormone called erythropoietin that tells your body to make oxygen-carrying red blood cells. As the kidneys fail, they make less EPO. With fewer red blood cells to carry oxygen, your muscles and brain tire very quickly. This is anemia, and it can be treated often through diet. This symptom of kidney problems typically occurs at Stage 4 and 5.
    Feeling cold - when others are warm
    Anemia can make you feel cold all the time, even in a warm room. A lack of red blood cells not only means that enough oxygen is not being transported throughout the body but also that heat and other nutrients carried by the red blood cells are also not being delivered adequately.
    Shortness of breath - after very little effort
    Being short of breath can be related to the kidneys in two ways. First, extra fluid in the body can build up in the lungs. And second, anemia (a shortage of oxygen-carrying red blood cells) can leave your body oxygen-starved and short of breath.
    Feeling faint, dizzy, or weak
    Anemia related to kidney disease means that your brain is not getting enough oxygen. This can lead to feeling faint, dizzy, or weak.
    Trouble thinking clearly
    Anemia related to kidney disease means that your brain is not getting enough oxygen. This can lead to memory problems or trouble with concentration.
    High Blood Pressure or difficult to manage blood pressure
    When blood vessels in the kidneys become damaged, they do not filter blood well, and the kidneys lose their ability to regulate fluids, hormones, acids, and salts in the body.
    Feeling very itchy
    Kidneys remove wastes from the bloodstream. When the kidneys have problems, the build-up of wastes in your blood can cause severe itching.
    Swelling in hands, legs, or feet
    Damaged kidneys don't remove extra fluid, which builds up in your body causing swelling in the legs, ankles, feet, and/or hands.
    Swollen or puffy face
    Damaged kidneys don't remove extra fluid, which builds up in your body causing swelling in the face.
    Metallic Taste
    A build-up of wastes in the blood (uremia) can make food taste different and cause bad breath. You may also notice that you stop liking to eat meat, or that you are losing weight because you just don't feel like eating.
    Ammonia breath
    A build-up of wastes in the blood (uremia) can cause bad breath.
    Upset stomach or nausea
    A severe build-up of wastes in the blood (uremia) can also cause nausea. Loss of appetite can lead to weight loss.
    Muscle Cramps
    Muscle cramps, especially in the legs can be a common problem for individuals with kidney disease. An imbalance in fluid or electrolyte levels can trigger these cramps as the metabolic waste builds up to higher levels in the blood.
    Pain felt in the back or sides
    Not everyone who suffers from kidney problems may experience it. Pain may be felt in the back where the kidneys are located or only on one side where the affected kidney is.
    Sleep Problems
    When the kidneys do not filter properly, toxins stay in the blood and cause uncomfortable symptoms like insomnia or restless leg syndrome.

    I"m making my way through your videos and I'm SO relieved. I've had micr0scopic levels of blood in my urine for years. Now I have swelling in hands and feet, joint pain and a few more symptoms. My doctors have been completely quiet because my labs are "bad enough". Now, I'm delighted to have information that will help me make changes.... to help myself!! The docs mean well, but if you don't have the numbers, you're not sick. I'm not happy with my health, but it's not "bad enough" to get their attention. I hope to have some substantial conversations with her when my next labs come in... thank you SO much!

    I have commented on one of your videos before... i am taking care of my 78 yr old mom whos had a heart failure back in june 2019 and diabetic... her kidney function read @ 9 GFr Nov same year 2019... only dialysis or kidney transplant is the option... i was desparate.. Then i stumbled on to your channel... I kept watching and did your suggestons based in your experiences.. Today!! day before my bday...2 months later got the blood tests results... from her nephrologist her GFr is 27 from a single digit.. Dr said nope to dialysis...Thank you!!! 😊I want to thank you in person someday...i am so happy i found your channel. You have helped a lot of people..

      That is amazing news and another great example of the power of the right diet and lifestyle changes helping a kidney warrior to kick kidney disease to the curb! Most people with kidney disease can live with NO symptoms with a GFR in the 20-30 range, so if your moms GFR stays stable (or continues to improve) she should be able to eliminate any symptoms she has. You will want to keep on her Nephrologist appointments and make sure her kidneys don’t return to their lower GFR. Thank you so much for sharing - this can help motivate others to give diet and lifestyle modifications a chance. Your mom is so lucky to have you helping her fight this!

      The Anonymous
      I researched online renal diets... anything low on sodium,phosphorous,protein... for example i give my mom egg whites for breakfast.. and toasted white bread with a lil apple jam spread.. lunch would be peanut butter and jelly sandwich.. with cellery,or red grapes.. dinner would be a lil rice and some chicken breast.. or fish like salmon, but In between those meals ill have her eat fruits and pretty much small meals with snacks in between pretty much to keep her blood sugar in a normal level, because she is diabetic who takes insulin.. it might be difficult at first to adjust to this kind of diet plan.. but to avoid dialysis it is well worh it.. and you have weigh your self at least 2x a week for example if you are 140lb! then divide your weight by 2 so 70lbs as my mom is... so your fluid intake should be 70oz. Per day.. take in to account the fruits you will be eating because they have fluids too basically watch more of Dadvice videos for what food/fruits to eat that is renal friendly.. While you do this diet plan with lots of prayers i mean a lot... anything your heart desires... with no judgement... u can ask God and he will hear you... u must have a pure heart before you ask God, some people might call him the universe.. i heard this quote from pastor Rick warren also from youtube.. about worry he says.. “Instead of worry worship, instead of panic pray” your heart is your biggest asset in getting well... if you are stressed, worried, anxious... affects your over all well being which affect your body physically.. biologically... so watch more of Dadvice videos and do some research on renal failure diets.. Do not focus in the problem because it will jus expand... Instead focus on the answers.. I will be praying for you God bless..

      Thank you for the positive comments and support! When I started making videos, the goal was to share my story and encourage others to try and improve. I quickly saw similarities amongst kidney patients and realized the need for education from a kidney patients point of view. I took a break in late 2019 and created some new guidelines to help keep future videos more educational, on point, and easier to watch (shorter). I know how important a renal dietitian is in fighting kidney disease and I hope to educate both kidney warriors and doctors of that. It is absolutely amazing how much nutrition impacts our health - and it is so easily overlooked. Thanks for all that you do being a renal dietitian and working with dialysis patients! It's people like you that have allowed people like me to get a 2nd chance at life.

      The power of UA-cam is the free access for people all around the world. For 2020 I am trying to make the videos more educational, shorter, and focused on a single topic per video so that people may want to share them more. I honestly believe the biggest challenge we face with the global epidemic of kidney disease is the lack of information. It is either too hard to find, out dated, difficult to understand, or not designed from a patients point of view. As more of us learn about kidney disease, the information will spread, and in that we will help to make a small change to this ever growing problem. Our community of kidney warriors is amazing, and together we are very powerful. I am thrilled with the support and positivity I see in so many - strangers brought together through this common battle we all fight. Thank you for your support and for helping to spread hope to others.

      When I was dx'd about ten or so years ago, my internist did tell me to quit taking NSAIDs... but to be fair, I quickly panicked and asked how soon would I have to go on dialysis! It happened that the man who was then my husband (later, divorced) had told me every scary story he knew about people with bad kidneys. Of course, I assumed that I would be doomed to dialysis, as well. This poor doc, about the same age as my kids, needed the rest of my appointment to calm me down and say that I would be able to live the rest of my life with the kidneys I had. He was right. I do miss chocolate... even the decadent, dark, yummy stuff, though.

    Hi there i hope you remember me. Got my recent results! Phosphorus and creatinine are normal, Gfr says >60, which is within safe range, its not showing the exact number if its anything like 70 or 80, but if it is greater than 60 i will take it. I ate lots of bluberries, took Coq10 and fish oil, Metamuccil fiber, ate less beef and pork, my BUN, wow it’s 7... whats the correlation of BUN with kidney disease by the way? Praise be to God!!!!! Himanshu Singh i also want to add that i took Garden of Life Probiotic supplement for Urinary tract, bought at whole foods. Ok so other things i did, i ELIMINATED, energy drinks, dark chocolate, ate less beef and pork, i ate more fish, i still consumed chicken. I definitely took out dairy, milk and cheese. And i would do intermittent fasting atleast twice a week. I dont know if celery juice would have a good effect on kidneys, but i drank celery juice from Pressed Juicery. I was careful to avoid Phosphorus, so i read the labels at the grocery and if it contained the word “Phos”, absolutely would not eat it. I ate Lots of blueberries, life for real... LoTs! And i believe this is one of the top things that healed my kidneys. But most important is my Faith in God, yes, i prayed and prayed and prayed everyday to Jesus, my healer!

    Having pain in middle of back on left side sort of near spine. Foods with sugar makes it worse or coffee and dark chocolate. I had strong antibiotics recently, gave me GERD and now having the pain in my back. Sometimes the right side hurts a little too but mostly my left. Don’t normally have back pain and haven’t done anything new to give me back pain. So worried. I don’t have the other symptoms. But seems like that is where my kidneys are. The pain has been there for a couple months. Have an appointment with my doctor and have mentioned my kidneys but she tapped my back in certain spots but I don’t think it’s kidney stones I think the strong antibiotics did something. She doesn’t think so. Last blood test my creatinine was 0.91 and my BUN creatinine Ratio was 14.3. But the pain is worse now compared to when the blood tests were taken in December 2023.

      For some people, Dialysis is the right choice due to their kidneys being too far damaged. Are there any results on your husbands labs are that lower or higher than normal? What has worked be for me is adjusting my diet to keep everything within the standard ranges (normal). Many vegetarians have challenges getting some nutrients, which perhaps your husband may also be missing. If you are comfortable, you can email your husbands labs to me at james @ dadvicetv.com and I can tell you what I would ask the doctor about based on the labs (I can't diagnose anything or provide a treatment plan, but I can help highlight what I would be asking the doctor).

    James, how do you deal with eating out at a restaurant? Thanks. George

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 роки тому

      This is a tough one - especially with my job that has me traveling a lot. I do my best to avoid eating out as much as possible, but when I do eat out I have a few tactics I use. First, I often eat a salad. I get no croutons or cheese, a vinaigrette dressing on the side, and have water to drink. I love salad bars when available - then I can load up on cucumbers and other veggies. If I will be eating more than just salad, I eat very little the rest of the day. I do occasionally treat myself to animal protein - it is hard to go out with coworkers to celebrate a tough week and not order a ribeye. When I do eat animal protein I keep the portion small - I try for 6oz or less. I'll pick veggies for my sides - like steamed broccoli or mixed veggies, maybe coleslaw if I'm feel adventurous (it often contains a lot of sugar). Some things I never do is drink soda, eat large portions, or eat bread/chips.
      I used to dine out every single meal and have adjusted to now only going out once every other week, or once a week at most when traveling. I pack snacks and always have those with me to help me make it while on the road to avoid a quick bite as McDonalds or Wendy's.

      I find it pretty easy to fit cereal and oatmeal into my diet - especially now that I am so much more healthy than when I was first diagnosed. It all comes down to balance and how much we eat throughout the day. Keep an eye on sugar and additives - that seems to be where these can become extremely challenging to fit into your diet. When I was first diagnosed I avoided cereal, but now I can handle them so much better and will enjoy a bowl a few times a week.

    James, so it sounds like in the beginning that you didn't get diagnosed as soon as you should have and ignored some of the symptoms yourself, correct? I think I got diagnosed as soon as possible, my blood tests were normal until 2017, then my GFR starting going down and the creatnine went up. I have been following your suggestions as much as possible. Even now I only have maybe 5 of the symptoms on your list, never had all of them yet. Take care.

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 роки тому +5

      When my symptoms first started I thought they were from food poisoning, something I had gotten in the past. I kept getting sicker and went to my doctor, and he treated me for food poisoning. Then 3 days laterI went back and he told me it was something else and I needed blood work. he made me go straight to the ER - he even called ahead to tell them I was coming and what test ai needed done. In addition to these symptoms, I had lost a lot of my vision and my blood pressure sky rocketed. As I pulled into the ER I suffered a heart issue and my memory of the next few hours is off and on (as was my consciousness). Part of the problem with kidney disease is the lack of awareness of it and its symptoms. A lot of symptoms I chalked up to getting older, being out of shape, and related to a car accident I had been in. I never once thought of my kidneys - though I did worry about cancer when I went to the bathroom and lots of blood came out. I also never shared much with my doctor - an ache here or there, wasn’t anything I have made an appointment for or even brought up when I did see a doctor. I am very different now - I make note of odd things and ask about them.

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 роки тому +3

      My decline in kidney function happened pretty quickly (within 12 months). I was in a serious car accident when a distracted driver ran an intersection on November 12, 2017. My back was really messed up (and still bothers me to this day) and I used Ibuprofen daily during my recovery. I never exceeded the daily max, and actually was taking the children's tablets. At night I did take Advil PM which is an adult dose. Near the end I suffered every symptoms - peeing blood, a non-stop cough, trouble sleeping, blurred vision (from my blood pressure), extremely high blood pressure, fatigue, puffy bags under both eyes, metallic taste, vomiting, and increased hair loss. The symptoms started out slow, then got worse during the last 3 months. The final month before being diagnosed I thought I had food poisoning - extreme fatigue, could only keep water down, unable to sleep, waking up at night soaked in sweat. I should have went to the doctor far sooner, but I just figured it was old age and I was moving into a new house and doing a lot of work. When I finally went to the ER, I parked right up front, opened my car door, and collapsed. The next few hours I was in and out of consciousness and it wasn't until the next morning that I learned I had kidney failure - the first time I had heard of any kidney issues.

      Only your doctor can tell - but your kidneys typically hurt when you are really far along with kidney issues. You may have something as simple as a kidney stone - but only your doctor can tell. Foamy urine has a lot of causes, and when it's kidney damage, it is MASSIVELY foamy. We're talking a full head of beer, multi-flush foamy. Sorry I can't give you and direct answer - but see your doctor and get some bloodwork done. Once you know the cause, you can then take care of it. Good luck!

    Do you recommend to drink a lot of water?

    • @DADVICETV
      @DADVICETV  4 роки тому +1

      I recommend drinking the right amount of water - too much isn’t helpful. The right amount will vary from person to person and it will depend on how well your kidneys are functioning. The standard formula used by most doctors is to get a persons weight in pounds and have them drink .5 ounces per pound. If you weigh 180lbs, then you would drink 90 ounces of water a day. If your kidney function is extremely low or you are retaining fluid, then your doctor will give you a lower daily target. You also want to drink the water throughout the day, not all at once. The goal is to stay hydrated, NOT to flush things out. Your kidneys are busy managing other things (sodium level, toxins, waste, etc.) and do not need extra work of removing excess fluid. It is important to work with your doctor and find the right amount of water for you and stick to that. Good luck!

At each visit I also highlight what I've done that the doctor recommended at the last visit - it shows that I'm listening and care about their advice. I believe this helps make a stronger connection with the doctor - they have so many patients who do not follow the advice given and it could make the doctors feel like they are just repeating themselves. I think a patient who is very engaged and actively following the doctors recommendations can get more from the doctors - I have no proof of this, but my doctors now give me all the time I need and no longer try to rush me through. See if either of these techniques can help you get more from your doctor visits. Best of luck Randy!

I wish I would have taken action earlier - it would have made life much easier. It's great to know that simple diet and lifestyle changes can have such an amazing and positive impact. Best of luck - you can do it!!

      There are so many of these types of supplements out there - my first response is to always check with your doctors first and never self prescribe. That said, I have actually heard of this since it treats inflammation. Reducing inflammation is extremely helpful in treating kidney disease. I need to make a video talking about that - but many people who are able to reduce inflammation are often able to see a decrease in the amount of protein they are leaking. It would be like having a colander and rinsing blueberries. If you could somehow stretch the colander bigger, the holes would increase in size and blueberries would fall through. The solution isn't to not wash blueberries in the colander, the solution is to remove the "inflammation" so that the colander returns to the right size and the blueberries don't fall through the holes.
      Talk to your doctor and see if this may help you, especially if you are suffering from inflammation. It's also important to check your diet. Something that is perfectly safe for one person to eat may cause inflammation or other reactions within your body. For me soy is one of those things I have to keep an eye out for. My and soy are like some people and shellfish.
      Glad to see you looking for other options that may help! The more we learn the better - knowledge is power in fighting kidney issues. Just ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS check with your doctor first. Good luck!

      There is a long list of things that can cause bubbles in your urine. I hear about this very often, my mailbox is full of pictures of peoples toilets with bubbles in it. The good news is, it is very rarely caused by damage to Kidneys. I would trust your doctor on this one, good luck.
