Back in the mid' 80's when cops were driving Dodge Diplomats with a wimpy 318. I drove my factory freak 1974 Chevelle, 600 miles in 5 hours flat. There was a family emergency and I had the only car that could get us up there in time. Top speed was around 150 mph. The hood started to shake so bad, I thought it was going to rip off! I'm thinking a had about 3 solid hours of 140 mph and the rest was accelerating and braking, getting gas and paying tools...
Contact me if you're down to try again. I plan on using thermal cameras and running ghost. Surprised you didn't see more out east in Louisiana. To others only speed when you can see everything in front of you. Let out at the bottom of a hill, coast to the top and then open up on the other side down. Never speed around corners and never fly past people. It's as simple as that. Your only problem spots are troopers like to sit down under a freeway or off to the side. They wouldn't be an issue except at 120-150 they would most likely hear you. And yes that's how we drive in Texas lol. If you're going fast you will always find two or three that will tag along for hours. Dually trucks with welders in the bed, corollas etc 110 + mph they don't care lol. It's a pretty crazy feeling going 130 for hours and hours and then getting out of the car and everything is just still.
It seems like most people do it in either a BMW or Merc. Which makes sense really, they are cars designed to be going well over 100 mph all day long in Germany and they don't stand out like an exotic car would and they usually get OK fuel mileage, probably not fantastic when running full throttle.
56hrs from Brooklyn nyc to mission Viejo Calif in a u haul! My friend and I moving him to Calif! 16 HR shifts between us and have to say met some of the finest people. When I was in the military i did the N.Y the wash d.c. run in 2hrs 20mins! I had to get back in time for muster at 0700! NJ trooper stopped me but saw the marine hat in the rear window. Asked me two questions and let me go with a warning! Learned a ton of info by having a CB that kept me alert , awake, and on pace! Love the open road!
So awesome. The beef jerky comment was hilarious, I could ONLY imagine the smell inside the cabin! Nonetheless, what an experience that must have been. Thanks for sharing!
Alex Roy is still the king for coast-to-coast records in my book, but he drives NY to LA. Totally different route so it's not as standardized I think he used a 20 gallon auxiliary fuel cell in the e39, but other than that it was only suspension and brake modifications
Last night I just finished day 5 on 12 hour shifts, 7 AM to PM. I live 45 minutes north of Anoka, Minnesota and take the back roads to and from work. I stopped at a sweet corn stand to check out some tractor implements that were for sale. This stand is right on a 3 way intersection with an east/west street teed onto a north/south main county road. As I'm purveying a purchase I hear some exhaust notes up the east/ west road. Ok......some kid on a crotch rocket. Again, exhaust notes......but crotch rockets don't sound like this. I get up to the side of the road, wait for it........ The first Lamborghini Gallardo I sighted in Minnesota. (At least in my area.) Beautiful sounds on the the downshift. Even more impressive as he was tearing away southbound to Anoka. That's something I'll never forget. That's my Lamborghini experience. 😎👍
Me and my girlfriend did Northern California to Fort Pierce Fl, in 48hrs. Pulling a gooseneck car hauler with a 1 ton 79 ford crew cab on the trailer. Hauled it with a 2008 F-450 and hit a deer in a ice storm in Texas. Made two repairs after tracking down parts from a ford dealer.
Oh man, that's crazy. This reminds of my road trip to Vegas. My friend is in the air Force and needed a car. I wanted to visit him. So we came up with the awesome idea to drive his car from back at home to his base. Well all my other friends were still in their dorms at the time... So I went alone. Oh I forgot to mention, we're from Chicago. So I go over to his house and talk to his parents to get the last adjustments on his 2000 Corolla. And my dumb nineteen year old ass left home at about 4pm to traverse the US. Long story short, I drove 30 hours nonstop. I don't know how I managed but I did it. It was kinda fun, gave me a lot of time to think about things but I was a zombie when I got there. Just a nifty little story to tell people lol
I don’t see why a special license would be needed, just use the road or don’t. Germans don’t need a special license to drive the autobahn it’s not that difficult to drive quickly.
@@ryancarlile8745 A couple of things to keep in mind in regards to the german autobahn: Getting a drivers license actually requires some effort and basic understanding on how things work and cars are regularly (once a year for older vehicles) and rigorously inspected for road worthiness.
You could theoretically have one car driving and have 2 buffer cars in front of and in back if the main car get the buffers to attract the cops and have them be pulled over but keep the main car safe
Jimmy Grant not true haha I'm stationed in northern cali and 97% of the cops speed with you or past you and don't even care, it's like the standard speed limit is 90 here haha
it really is.. sometimes i'm im a group of people on the highway all passing a trooper checking speeds at 70 in a 55. Sometimes they pull you over for 31 in a 30. that's more of a "check to see what else you're doing".
Back in the day it was probably easier because although the 55 speed limit was a thing not all cops would have had radar guns and police radio were all unencrypted
My best time crossing the country was: Los Angeles convention center to Miami convention center in 51 hours. In a tractor trailer, with a 53 foot trailer loaded with boat engines. My boss challenged me, and I did the run solo.
On I-10 in west Texas and you are surprised there are a lot of cops? Ummm, border! I-10 is the nearest Interstate to the border and is heavily patrolled. You're literally only a few miles from the border through a long stretch. There are even mandatory (regardless if you have crossed the border or not) border checkpoints a lot of the time.
Something id love to do. Just I would run in a bigass diesel with a huge fuel trank in the rear piped into the fuel system. Those diesel haul ass and take off quite well.
This is an older video but I go from I-95 Cocoa, FL to I-10 Jacksonville, FL to Tallahassee, FL. Going to FSU for school. In my truck at an average speed of 95mph. I never see anyone pulled over on those trips. Might have to look into this trip.
I am from Southern California... almost any day except holidays is good to drive in. I don’t know the east coast. Maybe a future goal... 24 hours sounds amazing.
So after a little research you could build something like an extcab s10 or dakota with an ls or hemi swap. Basing off a ROUGH 10mpg avg you would need 234 gallons of fuel to do it non stop. based off fish tank dimensions you could fit a 250 gallon fuel tank in the bed under a canopy to conceal it plus the factory 20ish gallon tank should be more then enough fuel plus if you use a trans flow controler the factory tank will not drop below 1/2tank. In an extcab you have enough room in the cab for snacks and with a truck you can carry tools as well as able to add proper airbags for the extra weight. Id have to imagine not fuel stops would cut out at least an hour
I10 between Houston and San Antonio is nothing but state troopers. I've driven that stretch numerous times and they conceal themselves pretty well there.
I once drove from ny to co in 24 hours thats including 6 hours of stop I wish I saw this video before I made my trip and I will had set a record going from coast to coast trough the midstates...
Hell yeah, I had an 01 325i that I drove to florida and back to california on the 10, most fun I think I've ever had on a road trip only time I got a ticket was in AZ for doing 89 in a 65, which was a felony at the time but he lowered it for me
tmanepic because the car they use has a suspension system that adjusts to the weight and they always keep it level for better air drag and tire use etc
"When you hit West Texas it's just cop after cop after cop, I don't even know where these people live...they must get helicoptered in or something.." LMAO
I drove from 29 palms California to sarasota Florida in about 31 hours by myself. I would like to do it again. But have it recorded and hopefully do it in 28 hours
Well I enjoyed the story bill! And I can relate. I personally think the only thing that would stop me is the car. The car has to be capable . But I am very proud of you. There are people that really don’t know ...but like to think they do. Your not that guy!!! And until you do this click time. To click time deal then it would all be speculation. 5:44 It's called pulsing or bursting. They dont leave the unit on they aim the unit, trigger it then shut it off to defeat radar detectors. Ive dont it and been the victim of it. Late at light with very light head on traffic they will do it driving toward on coming traffic and from static positions usually in the shadow of an overpass or up the side of an embankment on a sweeping bend.
Im in Atlanta, as well. When I was in the Air force in the 80s, I could take my '74 Road Runner, equipped with a prostock motor from Green Flag Automotive in Valdosta, GA, a custom transmission and high geared rear end through the deserts of Wyoming and Nevada at speeds up to 150-160 (radar tracked by an advanced scout) for very long stretches. The issue with doing that today, there or Texas, etc. on the long, straight interstate highways, is the high rise in large quantity drug trafficking. This is the big reason they "helicopter" in patrol cars (they actually have small way-stations where cops rest, refuel, change shifts and even have bunks, sort of like a firehouse) and it's so hard to keep a steady speed. They pull tons of weed and methamphetamines off the southern and central U.S. highways. In other words, the glory days are done. This isn't to say that, as said in this video, that it CAN'T be done... But timing, cooperative weather, lots of technology and a TON of luck are much more the order of the day than in the "good 'ol days" of the Cannonball, fanfare included, when endurance, a dependably fast car and balls the size of Gebralter (along with a modicum of luck) were all that was needed to traverse our beautiful country in a reasonable amount of time. My best wishes to anyone brave/dumb/crazy enough to try it today.
I live in Pa, have my entire life. And I can say without a doubt it’s the best state in the country to open up the car for a stretch. 80 West you can haul, and Pa is a wide state that I normally can run Philadelphia to Ohio in about 5.5 hours. But the state police become sparse once you pass Harrisburg so unlike the western states like Texas. Pa you can actually run full out if you know how to. I’m putting a coast to coast on my bucket list and I’ll run my 02 Mustang GT 2valve. I can fix, patch almost anything and have been off-road in the worst conditions on the worst terrain by myself and have always got myself out of any situation so this would be a new challenge.
My only speeding ticket was 50 miles from the nearest lean to in BFE West Texas. I was doing daytime limit at night back when that was a thing. I still don't know what tumbleweed he was hiding behind.
I'm highly interested in this. If the weather abides. I regularly drive 125 13 hrs when I travel in a garbage stock q50 when I feel ballsy I do 155 hitting the soft limiter. Do wish for a 35 gallon tank.
I've always wanted to do a coast to coast. I've drove from around Ft. Bragg NC to Key West Florida only stopping twice for gas. it was a 900 mile trip and from ft. Bragg to Miami I averaged right at 100 mph maybe a little more. but from Miami to Key West U.S Highway 1 is mostly a two lane highway with something like 42 bridges so that really slowed me down and I thing I average maybe 70 mph that last 160 miles or so which was extremely nerve racking consider the speed limit is 35 mph in a lot of places and the cops down there don't play with speeding especially if you have out of state tags. on a side not the fastest I have been on a public road is 162mph in my wife's 2016 Toyota Avalon. a few years ago when north Carolina was hit by a hurricane and interstate 95 was shut down I snuck onto the hw and hit around 130 mph in my 2013 GMC Sierra Denali. Before everyone makes a comment about said truck topping out a 98 mph, I have upgraded the L92 engine my with a stage 2 BTR camshaft, chromoly pushrods, LS7 lifters, trick flow head, hollow intake valve stems, upgraded exhaust valve stems, roller rocker arms with upgraded trunnions, Hinson CR5 LSX timing chain and a M295 oil pump. Plus I've completely retuned the ECM and TCM deleting the rev limiter and speed parameter so said truck will goes as fast as you want it to or at least until the transmission runs outta gearing.
Damn vinwiki....I had never heard of cannonball run before stumbling across this channeling and now I'd like to make a run one day. I'd like to make one run doing the actual speed limit or just over straight through to get a baseline.
VINwiki something diesel, maybe a bmw 328d. But I would like to be a little different because it seems as though most attempts were in euro cars since that's the obvious choice. Maybe a v6 accord though it would have to be modified quite a bit.
You definitely need a fuel cell. Stopping for gas is a time killer. Just driving from San Diego to Phx, I would shave 10 minutes off the expected time.
That and the sad reality is this isn't the 70s or 80s anymore. most truckers don't even use the cb anymore. Some old school guys still do religiously but it's definitely not as reliable as it use to be.
Caught a group of road rally guys in my Lexus SC and used them as cover for a top speed run, cops went after the Lamborghini and GTR I was with doing roughly 170
I'm building my SUV right now it's going to have a military style to it I want to travel the USA sounds like a fun idea for me to try and break a record still would be at least a year from now cause the SUV is having a heart rebuild and heavy mods for severe weather chasing
Thanks for coming by Bill. That is an unbelievable feat.
VINwiki hey I always get confused to who runs the channel? Got an answer?
VINwiki I thought Richard Rawlings and his friend had the record....he even got a tattoo on his arm for it
David Tran he never did, Alex Roy and David Maher did 31:04 six months before Richard and Dennis did the run in 31:59
David Tran, this is on the southern route. As for Rawlings record, that record was never good. Alex Roy had it before Rawlings could beat it.
VINwiki Dude brother that line at 5 minutes is similar to my favorite saying. "Shut the fuck up Fucker I am trying to sleep" lol
An amazing thing to watch for sure. Well done Bill & Vic!
What about the REVERSE cannonball? Start in LA, end in NYC?
Victor is my dad
This is becoming the consummate resource on all things regarding cross country speeding
It's just cop after cop after cop I don't even know where they live, it's in the middle of nowhere, they must get helicoptered in!!😂😂

Is paying tools a euphemism for bribing cops?

I imagine the fuel is the biggest feat which is why cars like lambos and pagani's couldnt do this run even though theyre fast
And the fact that cars like that attract insane amounts of attention. You'll get cops called for making too much noise passing people.
No it would break down before then
It seems like most people do it in either a BMW or Merc. Which makes sense really, they are cars designed to be going well over 100 mph all day long in Germany and they don't stand out like an exotic car would and they usually get OK fuel mileage, probably not fantastic when running full throttle.
Also anyone that's going for a record is going to have an auxiliary fuel tank.
We used a 32 gallon fuel cell along with the cars 16 gallon stock tank for a total of 48 gallons fueled 2 times after leaving.
My pleasure! It was a lot of fun!
Come back... more more

They should make a cross country highway that you can go 100mph + but you would need a special license to enter the highway
Balo657 or pay a toll which is what would happen if something like that was invented but I do agree a license should be required
Balo657 you don't need a special license. Most people can do it. Just gotta keep the slow fucks who go exactly the limit out

I’m putting a coast to coast on my bucket list and I’ll run my 02 Mustang GT 2valve. I can fix, patch almost anything and have been off-road in the worst conditions on the worst terrain by myself and have always got myself out of any situation so this would be a new challenge.
The Bimmer in da clutch
My only speeding ticket was 50 miles from the nearest lean to in BFE West Texas. I was doing daytime limit at night back when that was a thing. I still don't know what tumbleweed he was hiding behind.
This guy is funny. I'm in Columbus. We must meet.
I'm highly interested in this. If the weather abides. I regularly drive 125 13 hrs when I travel in a garbage stock q50 when I feel ballsy I do 155 hitting the soft limiter. Do wish for a 35 gallon tank.
I wonder if you can drive from New York and LA in one night
Not even close
Alex Corral you could with egg
Alex Corral i think its a 36 hour drive but if you double your speed thats 18 at 120mph
have done it in about 40hr, others doing it did it in about 36
712k subscribers what if u have a Bugatti and u got 260 mph and u have this one nice road to ur self straight to LA 😂 no street a straight high way
I wanna drink budweisers and eat crawfish while Bill tells me about the good ol days
My build starts next summer. GMC Sierra 1 ton
Hey Ed have you ever considered starting your own podcast?
Damn vinwiki....I had never heard of cannonball run before stumbling across this channeling and now I'd like to make a run one day. I'd like to make one run doing the actual speed limit or just over straight through to get a baseline.
+Jonny G great idea. What car would you choose?
VINwiki something diesel, maybe a bmw 328d. But I would like to be a little different because it seems as though most attempts were in euro cars since that's the obvious choice. Maybe a v6 accord though it would have to be modified quite a bit.
Funny I learned to surf at 37th beach in Jax
Im serious this channel needs more subs!!!
IKR! They should have at least 10x more subs than this.
Keep up the great work. Who runs this channel?
Ed Bolian the man in person!
(I hope i`m correct)
Lord only knows I’ve got plenty of fun car stories from Texas...
Great story, congratulations
I want to beat that recorded. I'm ready any time. Do i record the whole drive to prove it?
+Tim Keenan there are lots of strategies for verification. You can read a lot about the proof used by Alex Roy and in the 28:50 run.
I would love an Autobahn system with a .50¢ tollpass every 50 to 100 miles
I just did I-10 through West Texas,, at 110 MPH in my little 230i and didn't see a single cop on the road.
Has there been a run from, let's say Seattle to Miami? That would be brutal.
You definitely need a fuel cell. Stopping for gas is a time killer. Just driving from San Diego to Phx, I would shave 10 minutes off the expected time.
I did Santa Monica to New Orleans in 36 hours but Texas was like 25 of those hours
I would think if you had a Truck driver with you it would be faster/easier. He knows the roads and has 100's of spotters in trucks.
AlexxWith2X we had a cb radio to communicate with truckers.
That and the sad reality is this isn't the 70s or 80s anymore. most truckers don't even use the cb anymore. Some old school guys still do religiously but it's definitely not as reliable as it use to be.
cb for truckers helping each other is completely dead at this point.
Bill thanks for your service and thanks for the story man!
So "The young fast guy from Duluth". Duluth MN?
Georgia
Caught a group of road rally guys in my Lexus SC and used them as cover for a top speed run, cops went after the Lamborghini and GTR I was with doing roughly 170
best story
And I thought power walking was exciting!
If you blast Eurobeat on the radio, you can drive across the country in 24 minutes! :^)
I'm building my SUV right now it's going to have a military style to it I want to travel the USA sounds like a fun idea for me to try and break a record still would be at least a year from now cause the SUV is having a heart rebuild and heavy mods for severe weather chasing
Lmao those cops are helicoptered in
