I lost custody of my pet snake

- This Dumeril's boa was once mine after being surrendered by a guy who neglected her in a 20 gallon enclosure on live rodents with no proper husbandry for a decade. However, I eventually lost ownership and this is why. I also talk about her backstory and how she's doing now!

true story 😔✊ see why Dumeril's boas are the most underrated pet snake species in my previous video: ua-cam.com/video/jBOzRRRV_gE/v-deo.html
Hi
sad :(
😔✊
Really love your videos, very informative. I’ve learned to trust and understand my new Beardie. I even learned how to sex him! Great videos, keep them coming. 🥰
😔✊
I saw the title and thought someone like sued him for custody of this snake and then he’s like so basically my girlfriend that I live with took her and I was like oh. Well don’t scare me like that.
He kept on making it sound like he meant legal custody, not just he didn't technically own it.
I thought him and Alice broke up at first
Nice clickbait Alex. Lol
Dreadful click bait
Same
I adopted a boa constrictor from a guy who was neglecting her. I was told she was in a 40 gallon, that she was six foot long, she eats live, and the pictures where bad, and that was about all the info I got. When I got her she was actually in a 75 gallon tank, she was almost 9 ft, and she was severely tank aggressive (shows you how little he got her out as he didn't even know her actual size) and overweight, and the tank they gave me was cracked all over, so her nose was cut up from rubbing against the glass. There hadn't been a water dish so she was drinking spray water off the sides of the tank, no bedding, several piles of crap and sheds from the past months.
In the past two years I've gotten her to a much healthier weight, I handle her regularly and she is not aggressive anymore. She is 10 ft long, 21 lbs, eats frozen thawed rabbits, and lives in a 130 gallon tank.
I'd like to think she is happy with me and my family.
i'm so glad she has a better home!
Thanks for helping her out, her change in behavior should be evidence of how much you've helped her out. The part about her getting all cut up made me tear up. 😢
Tank aggression is not a real thing educate yourself the snake is hungry and or scared
@@blank1778 I'm well aware that it's not called tank aggression but when an animal is aggressive or defensive in their enclosure this is the common phrase we use to refer to it. She used to hiss and open her mouth wide, she would s up and strike at me. But when I got her out of the enclosure she is completely calm and relaxed. After 2 years of working with her she no longer hisses, no longer attempts to strike me, and no longer acts pissy when I approach her. I completely understand as a snake owner that using the term tank aggressive isn't the best term. But as a person who's commenting on UA-cam, I figured it would be best to use a term that other snake owners or non-snake owners would understand.
That is such a sweet story :) I'm glad you have her now and she is in a proper home
“Why isn’t it biting you” idk man maybe because she’s not the dude that shoved the poor baby into basically a shoebox to live in.
Snakes wouldn’t know or care. Just depends on the snakes attitude and current stress.
@@antoniogelardi1897 snakes definitely do care about humans and can recognise them and have memories
@@charlie-qv3nw yeah, but they lack the ability to love and as long as their needs are met won't care about what its habitat looks like
@@JESTER11X well her needs clearly weren't met and she obviously hated him. I think she knew he was the one making her miserable and she hated him specifically. Snakes can be cool with their owners but if you make them unhappy they'll show it.
Watching him get slowly choked out by the snake is both hilarious and terrifying 😅
It's like a dog or a cat but they live longer
I agree!
As long as they don’t get their tail looped ur good
Only time I’d personally feel uncomfortable is if I was working with a snake that weighed more than me
For real
When you said “she tried to bite him” I pictured Alice biting the man who had the snake.
SAME
If I were Alice, I would've told the previous owner that "Wow this snake hates you and only you. Rightfully so." 😂
@Kyuriosity ✓ they are however defensive against abusive humans or animals. They don't just lash out at one and not the rest. That dude was straight up hitting that snake or something to make it fear bite and lash at him.
@Kyuriosity ✓ and yes we know this. We don't really care. Hate or not that snake definitely doesn't like him.(the old owner)
@Kyuriosity ✓ well ur fun and patronizing
I know, right? I've heard a few stories like this where the owner says their animal is a monster, but it instantly cools down the moment it's with someone who's not a jerk (basically anyone besides the owner).
@Kyuriosity ✓ Yeah no that's not true.
I think Ivy really likes you. She seems laid back and is enjoying life. I'm glad you have visitation rights.
The way she's all up on him and wraps around him reminds me of my uncle
I thought snakes couldn’t feel affection like other animals? Like they’re more relaxed and perhaps recognise certain things like you taking care of them but they don’t show appreciation other than being chill/handling well.
@@sommerblume9671 yeah, they lack the part of the brain that allows something to love.
@@sommerblume9671 As far as we know that would be correct. Current knowledge points more to them being capable of understanding when they are in danger and when they are with a human they can be relaxed and comfortable around, but that they don't feel affection or love. It would make sense that they would be that way as that emotion wouldn't benefit them in the wild in the first place. As far as how intelligent they really are, I genuinely think they are a fair bit more intelligent than most people give them credit for. It's all a learning process though. As studies continue to be done with them we'll slowly learn more and more about them. It just takes time. I've learned tons about ball pythons in the last year and it's been a blast. I've had mine for 9 months and he just turned 1 year old a couple weeks ago. He was 3 months old when I got him and he's been doing amazingly well, and he's a total sweetheart. He's never gotten defensive, never hissed and never struck at anyone. It's been amazing.
@@stfinalwrath such a good comment, yes they probably can’t feel love, however the relationship is more about trust and understanding than it is love, and I think that’s just as rewarding
I've seen abused reptiles and how reptiles react to the abusive humans. He must of been mean to her in anger..glad she was saved.
The previous owner probably kept throwing terrified live rats into her enclosure when the snake wasn't even hungry so the snake had to kill and eat them to be safe in this tiny enclosure. No wonder she hated the guy.
Was worried you were going to say split custody with the original owners haha, I've had people try to pull that and promptly told them to eat my ass; your shit care and giving the animal to me for free was the end of your involvement in this snakes life. Split custody with the girl friend is definitely better lmao.
Hope all is well man, much love
Thank u sir, and contact me somehow >:[
@@GoHerping either I'm stupid tired or this feels extra confrontational for some reason lol
they already lost snake privileges by neglecting a living breathing animal >:(
She didn’t bite her because she wasn’t the idiot that made her stay in a tiny cage. Snakes can recognize people and differentiate between them, and they remember who has treated them badly and who hasn’t. I’ve witnessed this several times before.
I'd like to believe this but I'm very skeptical.
@@DeluluIsTheSolulu why? animals aren't blind. even fish can tell people apart
@@DeluluIsTheSolulu reptiles are alot smarter then people think
@@salemunderfire lol exactly. If my tiny cherry barbs with micro brains can recognize me, then a snake absolutely can
It's also likely that the dude was scared of her when she got bigger, and he started acting all skittish around her. Animals in general can pick that up and it oftentimes stresses them out.
A... A DUMERIL IN A 20 GALLON!??! ON LIVE?? AND HE WAS GONNA RELEASE IT?? Sorry but some people should NOT have animals. So sorry about the snake Alex that's rough
and he was so baffled that she was aggressive! You put her in a coffin sized box with an opponent, of course she's going to try to kill you!
This is why florida has a big problem with pet snakes and lizards infestation :(
I DO NOT OWN A SNAKE NOR DO I PLAN TO but why are live rodents bad? just curious.
@@zoinksss1372 for one thing the rodents can severely injure the snake because they can and will fight back, secondly it causes the rodents great stress and pain when they are transported and then eaten alive, it's more ethical for them to be frozen or stunned
@@zoinksss1372 also why won't you own a snake?
I did an internship at a wildlife ranch that had one of these boas. Her name was Ga’luna. I had heard from some people who worked there that she had tried to bite people multiple times, so I was a bit worried when I had to clean her enclosure. After realizing that if you approached her correctly, she wouldn’t try to bite you, I was able to handle her comfortably :) they are such beautiful snakes, and truly underrated. I had almost forgotten about that boa until I watched this video! Maybe I will own one some day :)
“I legally don’t own the snake and can’t sell her for profit”
This is a man with his priorities STRAIGHT/s
He's just saying that if he did own her, he'd have sold her.
@@davidrosvall1722 I know, it just made me chuckle for some reason
I think it's endearing how honest he is

My initial thought rosie was going to be taken back from the school you got her from because they "had the rights to her" because my imagination likes to think of the most bizarre thing
I literally thought the same thing
me too!
Me three
Me too!
Likes bc I always make to the worst possible assumption on the first try lol
She's so pretty💕at least your "shared custody" has her only the next room over lol. I'm glad you two took her in and she got away from that moron.
"Nooo i wanted to keep her. And sell her. . ." Like damn boy thats cold thought you were gonna say love her!
“It leaves permanent creases… until it’s fixed”😂😅
Lmao right? I think those are called... Temporary creases.
I guess it could've meant the old scales are permanently creased, but not the new ones, if their enclosure is upgraded
"and get stuck in something"
Ivy currently stuck in the chair
Awww poor baby! In a freaking 20gal? Who sees a snake that big in an enclosure that tiny and goes "yeah this is fine. Couldn't possibly be biting me because of discomfort "🙄 some people should just not have animals. Also, ivy could probably sense that Alice was there to rescue her, so she was just chill.
Poor Ivy! She has a double chin. I'm glad to see that she's living her best life now.
everybody in the comments be gaslighting you about the existence of your roommate lol
Alex: What are scales made of?
Me: Keratin!
Alex: Keratin. I knew that.
Me: Bullshit!
Alex: I didn't know that.
XD
When I was 14 I babysat a Burmese Python , I loved that half day!
That's cool you got to do that, but why did a snake need watched?
The owner had to go get a new aquarium, guess the old one was cracked or something.
@@breezyautumn ok, that makes sense. Can't have a loose snake 😁
I'd like to buy your share of Ivy. Ivy is better off under our care
she'll be a great bodyguard for me
Hi Kim, wassup bor
Bro I meant- Anyways wassup
Hi Kim
I was mad and thinking this was serious until I read the name
Snakes can definitely tell the confidence level and how much care the person reaching for them has for them. When I worked at petco there was a corn snake that was labeled "aggressive" and would try to strike at anyone that thought she was going to strike while putting their hand in the tank. I was never scared of her and never paid any mind to the "aggressive" and just thought it was bs and she was the most docile and cuddly snake with me but with anyone else that had fear it was instant strike position
This sounds super real
Very nice that Alice let you have the weekends
i love how in a q&a a while ago, he said his channel isn't growing anymore, but since then, his sub count has nearly doubled
The Dumeril's boa is just a boa constrictor that's built different
I also got a large snake as a rehome, previous owners said she was very bitey, hadn't handled her in a year, tiny enclosure, and she was overweight.
I get her, plenty nervous, never handled a snake as big as her (full grown carpet python), and lo and behold she's fine.
I guarantee they have one bad experience, get spooked, and snowball from there. The snakes gets used to not being handled so they think it's an aggressive snake
Sad to see that a snake I thought I might save up for is no longer available. Glad to see that she is doing well tho
I paused my anime for this, this better be good.
Same ×D
look at the uwu snakeu
Oh no weeeebbbssssss😂😂😂
Man that snake is just everywhere, it's like if a cat were a noodle.
"They would have most likely killed it cuz' theres a big ol' copper head in their lawn"
I can't believe she was in a 20 gallon, that's insane, my brother's tiny leopard gecko is in a 20g, my ball python, Cujo, is in a 40g and this snake is twice his size :/
She's a beautiful snake - good that you are still involved with her care.
He’s really committed to this whole “Alice is a real person” lie. 😮💨 It’s okay. We all know the truth. 😌
As she goes off screen/off the chair
"See ya later bro going to eat a cat~"
Now Ivy gets to live with both mommy and daddy ☺️
I have a Dumeril’s boa! He’s my pride and joy. His name is Severus Snake.
Hahahahahaha. Snake lol. Instead of... yeah I get it

I was scared for a split second but remembered you were ironically dramatic and relaxed
Very cool snake and I’m glad she’s loved and in a good home with you guys
The story time we didn’t know we needed 👏🏼
Please do not pick up animals alone, especially if you're a woman. Find someone, anyone to go with you.
People who abuse or neglect animals are the types to kill.
Either bring someone else, or bring a weapon
@@marcelskyy6631 do both
This really really confused me for a second, I thought you meant women shouldn't have pet animals because they were more likely to hurt them and my tiny brain was so lost
That had not occurred to me. Was only thinking of the snake, and what a butthole he was. Good lookin out
that was my immediate thought. especially on semi-anonymous websites like Craigslist, accounts without pictures on Facebook marketplace, etc. and bring a weapon, but make sure it's legal where you live, especially with blade laws and pepper spray- cops have been known to arrest people for protecting themselves.
the title scared the shit out of me
I have a Dumerils boa and absolutely love him, he is so kind and gentle 🐍
I LOVE my Dumerils boa, she's still small and 2 years old her name is Duma and she's the absolute SWEETEST

Custodian? lmao I think Alex forgot the word "guardian" for a second there 🤣
Custodian is the proper word to use in this situation though…
A custodian is a caretaker. They are all synonymous.
Aw sweet little girl bless her soul ❤ so happy she's doing better 🥰
Lol funny story with the boa but on a side note, STAANN!!!

thats actually so cute the snake trusted her :')
I remember doing some research on the folding scales thing because I was worried about my ball pythons but if I remember correctly, it can happen even if they have plenty of room in their hide- my male definitely has a big enough hide and a big enough tub but he still gets bent scales
You both are so sweet
That banjo music really got me😂😂😂
Glad she was rescued. Ivy is Beautiful!
The scootch to the camera at the end was the best haha! My cat pins me down every morning the same way :P
The banjo music when you said someone found a copperhead killed me😂

I love my Dumeril’s Boa he’s the sweetest boy. I’ve never had a problem with him being aggressive or anything. He hatched incredibly tame and I think he’s a really good ‘first time’ boa for me. Since I’ve always loved the larger snake species.
Quick question, what do you feed him? I'm thinking of getting a dumeril, no worries I'm doing the research eith UA-cam and multiple care guides on websites, and I just would like to know all the feeding options. I may be overthinking though 😅
@@withmymindandmyimagination844 I feed him frozen thawed rats

I was expecting this to be like "sooo my zebra cobra broke out" when I saw the title pop up (the North Carolina ppl get it )
I swear
That’s exactly why NC can’t have nice things
Also: this isn’t afroherpkeeper lol
Nothing is funny about it. One person may cause a ban because he did not follow one simple rule of not keeping his animal secured and brought it outside. People lives where at risk and the snakes and now people my lose there pets because of one person.

I'm gonna have to use that excuse next time my friends make fun of me for not being thick
wouldnt frozen rats die a lot slower in a co2 chamber than a live rat dying from a constrictor and people say drowning is a bad way to die but a snake chokes em unconscious in like 6 seconds and then induces heart failure
it's a similar amount of time but with less crushing and teeth in your skin
I wish my boa would just chill and lay near me. Every time I get him out he's like I'M GOING ON AN ADVENTURE'

Dang, She’s beautiful! Ivy is a Queen Snek 👑
Thats a mighty fine long mover ya got there
Watching you with her, and hearing you talk about her... I sense you do love her. She's very comfortable with you. I'm so glad she made it to your care, she's gonna thrive now. She is a beauty, I love her markings. I doubt I'd be able to care for her, but I'd sure like to hold her. My adult son wants a Hognose snake, they are unique. We're researching them currently. The 1st time I saw a bearded dragon I absolutely fell in love with them. After a year of research, sadly I've realized we don't have enough $$ to properly care for one it's entire lifespan, including a fund set up for exotic vets just in case. We love watching you on your channel here, you're intelligent, interesting, and very caring of all the little critters. Thank you for all your awesome educational videos.

My cali king used to have those creases in his scales too. That snake had plenty of space and large hides but loved finding the *tiniest spaces* possible to be in, it was ridiculous. His favorite was paper towel rolls, I always cut the side open cause he'd squish all 3 ft of himself solid in there and I worried he'd get stuck
I never heard of this species of boa. It looks really nice... got a cute face too!!
I started chocking when I saw this in my recommended

That snake looks cool one of my dream 🐍
I love Dumeril's so awesome, I have 3, 2 pretty big 6ft girls and a little baby!
Looks like your herps are doing good
I love this species. My first snake was a dum. It's SO important to feed them infrequently and they don't need massive prey items. I feed my not fully grown 4yo monthly or less often. Fun fact, their genus (Acrantophis) etymology is literally lazy+snake. Adults can be fed every 4-12 weeks, alternating between more frequent smaller meals and less frequent larger. They love whole quail and chicken. They benefit from tap training because adults are food motivated, but they're so chill once they're out. My girl is my best educational animal. So many kids and adults have held or touched her and gotten a little more comfortable with snakes. Most captive individuals are obese, even ones kept by otherwise competent keepers. There's a belief they're supposed to be thick, heavy bodied snakes. Not really. Their wild, natural, healthy body condition has similar proportions to Boa imperator and Boa constrictor. Just more of a rounded square.
