  • [animal resources, products I use and more: goherping.com] - Of all the pet snakes you can get, Mexican black kingsnakes probably stand out as one of the coolest looking. After-all, they've got get black scales, eyes and even tongues, but does the design of these dudes wear off? Or do they truly make great exotic animals to keep?

My MBK is handled everyday unless she's digesting or in shed. She's still a food monster. I have to use a hook with her, or she will literally swallow my whole finger. She's still my favorite snake. I've never met a snake with more personality, and she cracks me up daily. She has tried to eat her water bowl (both her baby bowl and her current one), a diet coke bottle (this is almost daily, if she has access to one. She has a weird obsession), her hook, the lid of the deli she was shipped in, the door of her enclosure, my phone, and the blanket on my bed. She's target trained, but this doesn't stop her from always hoping for food. She's my little food monster 🖤🐍

Yeah but not entirely true. Cal kings range into Baja, Ariz, Nevada. They gradually appear very desert king looking in Ariz, where eventually it is the desert king, and going south into mainland Mexico the desert king can get very MBK looking in some areas. In fact, there is a region in Az where the kings there can look like Cal, desert or rarely even MBK.
Really, there are not many differences if you remove the paint jobs. Although, behavior can be different. West coast Cal kings (brown and yellow) are typically the most likely to musk, and as you go east they tend to get a little more calm. The MBK is usually a calm kingsnake, as are the desert kings. The MBK has been selectively bred over a long time to be 100% black, as not all kings in "MBK range" are totally black. In the early days many had a faint trace of pattern like the desert kings, especially when young. Breeders kept back the babies that hatched all black for future breeders. Even today, an all black pair of MBKs can still throw babies with a faint pattern, but it seems that those are now the exception rather than the rule.
I do not think they should be called subspecies, but whatever. There is your massive amount of info. You tubers are very good at making videos, but their info is way too general, or they do not have the history of the animals, but I still support them anyway. They put in lots of work and get the animals out there to be seen.

Around 20 years ago I was given a king snake, likely wild caught, who was around ten when she was given to me, and not able to be handled at all. She was a voracious eater and escaped her tank despite cage clips, weighted lid, the works. It would not take long to find her, maybe two or three days, because she would find you and bite anywhere she could sense a pulse and then sit and stare at you then aggress towards you when you tried to scoop her up. She was wild. I miss her.

My favourite part about MBK's snake isn't just how beautiful they are, but that is a big part. But it's their food motivation that I think is hilarious. They're typically VERY opportunistic. I always say that if something has the slightest chance of being food, they will immediately try to eat it. Even if it hasn't tried to eat you yet, it can take just smelling like food, like any other animal, and it'll take the gamble. Because MBK's are snake eaters, snakes are the smell of food...they're snakes...they smell like snakes...sometimes the lil idiots will try and eat themselves. I think you've just gotten pretty lucky with the temperament of this MBK, but I wouldn't write them off as being too easy just yet. You could be due for a monch at any day, and it is the only one you've handled so far. They're easy to tame down, but it's just that feeding response is just a liiiiiittle too optimistic at times.
They are incredibly beautiful though, like with the sun hitting the scales, they're practically iridescent. I'd buy this one from you in a heartbeat if I was in the US, but unfortunately I'm not.

My African House Snake is all black, but smaller than a king snake, but also far more iridescent than king snakes. I still like the all black appearance though. I'll probably sell mine at some point though because I originally wanted a more social / curious snake that moves around once in a while, not a boring ball python type of personality. It's a nice and friendly snake... but also really boring and also doesn't seem to want to eat very often (often only once a month despite offering him large pinky / tiny fuzzy mice nearly every week). It's more than a year old now. I do like the fact that it selected a regulated heated hideout as it's outhouse where the fecal is completely contained within and doesn't ruin the bedding in the enclosure. As much as I hate the idea of getting a common snake that everyone knows about like a corn snake, it seems like it's my best option.

How on earth do you give away an animal you raised from the time it was tiny to the age of 20?
      To your sons friend?
      Wow.
      That's like, heartless.
Did you have no attachment to the creature? Do you even know if it's alive now?
This is why I pity animals sometimes. Imagine if someone got bored of you and just gave you to a stranger. After 20 years.
      That's so, so sad.
That poor snake. It must have been terrified when suddenly everything changed. I'm sure if it could speak it would ask what it did wrong, and why were you doing this...
Humans can be downright cruel, and things like this are why I loathe them so.

@@JohnSmith-mk1rj oh my son is a great kid very responsible . I gave the hole enclosure to him and help set it up in his room . Made sure he took care of him for years I was there weekly . They ended up moving for work so I don't see them anymore . Have asked a few times and he was great taking him outside and handling him . I didn't have time to take him out and pay attention to the snake though he would be better with my friends son .

I found a California King Snake that was super chill from the moment I picked it up. I had to move it because it was curled up right behind one of my car’s tires. I picked him up and he didn’t care. Never hissed, struck, or musked on me, never even tried to get away. Behavior was normal, no injuries, body condition looked great. I don’t think it was sick, just unusually calm for a king snake. I’ve found some pretty chill gopher snakes out here before, including a baby gopher snake just a couple weeks ago (another one I had to move whether it was chill or not due to being on my mother in law’s property and she hates snakes). Like the king snake, it didn’t care when I picked it up. Some react so badly to even being approached that out of respect for the animal and to avoid stressing it, I let it go on its way if relocation isn’t necessary. I just play it by ear.

I have a young 1.1 pair for future breeding plans. The female is super shy and sweet. But the male is ALWAYS trying to eat my fingers and anything else that moves - tongs, water as I'm filling his water dish, even attempted to take a bite of a towel I had him on once. He's too small to do any real damage and can hardly even break the skin when he gets ahold of me, so it's adorable now but I hope with regular handling he'll chill a little. Wouldn't be quite as charming for him to try eating a finger when he's the size of the one you have and may actually manage to swallow one down lol. Very nice video!

Hello, I've got a question on my Iguana I've had for some time now. She is a healthy green iguana, Her name is Dawn. Dawn is a two year old female. About 3 months ago she started having a interesting shed starting on her shoulders. This has sense spread downward towards her back legs and stomach. I've been a Iguana owner for the last 15 years and have been well noted in my care of my iguanas. However I've never experienced this before in my keeping of the species. This isn't a stuck shed her scales have started to fall off and its a smooth leather feel. I am reaching out to find out specific is going on with her skin.
Environment She is in a enclosure with regularly changed uva/uvb bulbs. A mister goes off once daily first thing in the morning right when the lights first come on to bring up humidity to 85 to 90% this drops throughout the day till evening and it gets to 70 around bed time.
Lamps are on from 7am to 9pm then shut off via auto timer.
Basking spot is 93F and the cool side of the cage is 75 to 70 depends if the vents are open.
Diet is mixed and ever changing to keep things fresh.
She gets two baths a week about 30 minutes of soaking per time.
If you have ever came across this in the past or know what is causing it please message me.
    Sinclery, C
