Death is to be avoided at all costs.
Noted.
Idk bro, I think I might just go for it today.
@InvisibleRabbitV1 u still with us?
Well strike that off my evening to do list
@highqualityorangejuice4010 he's gone
@@wraithreaper22they are fine
I have bad allergies so use a machine to clean out my nose with salt. Some with similar devices have died from the Amoeba because of this treatment. ALWAYS use distilled water using these treatments and make sure to properly clean and sanitize them.
Distillied water id only $1-$1.50 a gallon here so there is no excuse not to use it.
I've heard of people dying from this because they didn't use the correct type of water. It's a horrible thought.
Spending a small amount of money to stay alive seems logical.
You can buy sterile saline water, or even just boil and cool drinking water too.
@@terryenby2304boil and cooling water can be harmful also. While boiling it does kill everything organic, it does not remove the dead cells. As the water cools it become a perfect breeding ground for bacteria to come and eat up all the dead cells.
Distillation is a bit different as it catches the boiled water in its gaseous form and allows it to condense back to liquid water while leaving all the dead cells behind. It also removes minerals that, in this case, are not needed.
yea this is why most people make their infections worse with netty pots and such. It doesnt help that the directions don't specify what type of water to use
@@P-C-Principle It does. People just don’t read the directions. Many even come with mineral tablets so you can salinize your distilled water!
The first time I remember hearing about this was when I learned a child contracted and died from a brain eating amoeba at a Disney water park in the 80s. Newer treatments are showing promise to increase survival, but it is still not perfect. Of course, getting these treatments to developing nations where people are more likely to contact the amoeba remains challenging.
And then there’s Texas, specifically Lake Jackson, even more specifically, a water park in an elementary school’s park.
Even more specifically, the school I went to as a kid.
Definitely great to hear that they’ve had brain eating ameba
In curious of the thousands of children that surely where on the same water park only 1 got infected
@@danmen5258 The video doesn't really describe just how uncommon is is to contract it, even if you do inhale water with the bacteria your chances of infection are still extremely low, & on average there are less than 10 cases per year. Of course even if the chances are miniscule you should still be safe with your life. You could roll that dice a hundred times & win each time, but you only get to lose once before you end up in the morgue.
New fear unlocked...thanks Simon
Her: you better be consuming useful and helpful media you enjoy.
My hypochondriac ass:
I remember a case in Australia where a family were playing in the garden with a hose in the hot weather, and the water went up the nose of one of the kids. The child went on to have crippling headaches, was misdiagnosed several times by doctors, became unconscious and ultimately died. 😢
Luckily, even if it does get in your nose, your body can often catch it before it reaches the brain.
iirc it tends to be the result of a compromised immune system
@@oscaranderson5719 Not true at all, it mostly affects children and immunocompetent young adults. Your body stops it primarily with the blood brain barrier which is mostly physical obstruction it can’t get past. Two citations below.

"Naegleria Fowleri is bad. Thanks for watching."
Rabies is also pretty much a death sentence, but it can be fixed if treated in time and also the Milwaukee protocol has worked once or twice.
26 times though those who survive usually have lifelong complications
Thankyou for that. I will now never shower, swim, breath, or anything else with any water ever again.
The states with most reported cases are: CA, AZ, TX, FL and SC
(note: this means 8 or more cases reported since 1962, so while these are the most reported states, the numbers are still pretty low and you're propably more likely to get hit by lightning)
Its found worldwide, enjoy that thought
It's present in ALL countries.
Simon's sarcastic- so that's nice at the end 🤣🤣
These things still scare me as much as they scared me when I was a kid lol
Luckily, infection is extremely rare (at least where I live). Look online for a list of places where infection has been confirmed and avoid the water (or pick a new vacation spot).
So basically don’t swim in any lake for the rest of my life, and I won’t die to this
Just stick to cold lakes.
A lake under 60 degrees is guaranteed safe.
A lake under 70 degrees is almost guaranteed safe.
@@priestesslucy3299 just stick to swimming pool that are commercial and properly chlorinated
My aunt managed apartments, and in the 90s one of her tenants when to Lake Havasu and was dead days later from this.
CDC: "The amebae may be present in any freshwater body in the United States, regardless of the state, especially during the warmer months of July, August, and September. [...] It grows best at high temperatures [...] typically higher than 80°F. is not found in salt water, like the ocean."
So everyone who's all "the ocean is terrifying ahhhhh"... at least there's no brain-eating amoebas in the ocean. (Let's be real, there probably is MUCH worse.)
This is why I only swim in the ocean fr
ok good to know. Solution: Don't die, should be easy
Great.... new fear unlocked..... guess you didn't feel like telling us where this awful little bug lives huh?
Love the content, keep up the good work.
Prognosis Negative...
Are you sure?...
Positive...
Beard is becoming godly dude, Zeus level 😂
The amoeba can also cause eye infections, especially in those who wear contacts. This is why you never swim with contacts in and never rinse your contacts with tap water.
House has an episode of this disease, It looks scary
I’m over by a lake on vacation, and went swimming a couple of times. I’ve no symptoms, but now I have extreme paranoia about it
Pickiest parasite to ever live.
Goes into mouth: "swim up there? All that way? Id rather die in this monsters stomach"
Interesting how people used to never worry about swimming in lakes
It exists in the roman baths in Bath UK, not a good swim
That: "So that's nice" sigh at the end killed me!
Everywhere I’ve ever lived had it in the water and I’ve never known anyone to contract it, so I always have to stop myself when I start panicking about getting a headache after I’ve gotten water in my nose 😂😂😂 purified water only for the Neti Pot as well 😂😂
Also just wanna point out that there's only been like 5 confirmed cases in the last 10 years or something
THANK GOD i cant get infected by drinking it. i never will swim from now on i swear
We get these occasionally in lakes here in MN. There's a warning placed and the lake is closed until the Amoeba die off
It was just last year learned about this. I spent my summers getting tossed in lakes as a kid on the Range and went to college in Duluth. 😭 Nobody ever wore or cautioned me to wear nose plugs, or informed me of it’s existence. I imagine it must be fairly uncommon to actually contract because I also haven’t known of people randomly dying like this? And here I was just terrified of leeches 😭😭😭
@@Uffda. not super common, only happens during the warmer months of summer here and it has to get really warm for it to happen. And it's usually only a couple of lakes not a widespread thing. And if you were up by Duluth in Lake Superior you don't have to worry. Lake is to cold for that
Sometimes ignorance is truly bliss.
my stepfather got one of these when he was younger! lucky for him, it “just” resulted in a super bad ear infection
Just another reason to avoid Florida
It said freshwater, most of florida is surrounded by salt water
@ipotat6548 wow, so you might want to stay off the fruit of FL. I'll let you in on a little secret, there is also freshwater there. Like in the everglades or just simple anything inland that leads to the ocean. Or maybe just look up where on the magically contraption called the internet and use ask jeeves to find where it happens. 🤔
you'd rather enter the coma, who'd want to be lucious of that
There's also a dating sim game where the heroine gets infected and you get to decide whether you let him (yes, him) take over and make a family within you and die or convice him to leave you by manipulating them into returning to the lake so you can "heal better" and come back to him and your children to be together forever again ❤
Shits wild
What’s the game called?
Lmao I can’t believe I forgot about that. “Parasite In Love” was just… bizarre.
....yes, that is nice. Thank you for that !
Ummm Simon why didn't you tell us WHERE it can be found?
Kinda important info!
Globally. Just don't swim in warm fresh bodies of water.
@@confed4055 I doubt it exists in countries where the average summer temperature is under 20C
This reminds me of dog days of summer during august when i was growing up. But brain eating bugs was not on the menu.
I heard you can have trouble with bacteria if you turn your geezer on and off so it never boils .
This stuff is the reason people can't use the Roman Baths in Bath, Somerset anymore. A girl died of the infection after swimming there in 1978, and using the ancient baths has been banned ever since.
So youre just not gonna tell me wich parts of the world they are found in?
Google says that it's found everywhere except Antarctica.
It needs to travel up the nerves in your nose to your brain. So even if conditions are just right it’s still hard to get. 😒
damn nature is scary
You’ve convinced me. I won’t snort water anymore ☹️
It’s also in dust
Should have mentioned, that there are only a few infections each year. Its really rare.
There was just a case in Pakistan where a guy died because swimming in a hotel pool. This was the cause.
This is why i stopped swimming in lakes ..
Oddly, it seems only certain people are susceptible to it. Antibodies to it are fairly common in areas where it is endemic.
the Roman Baths in Bath has it.
Kurzgesagt has a pretty good video on this for anyone interested
really fascinating information in that video, including how the reason it does this is because our cerebral neurons simulate the chemical signals that the amoeba's usual prey uses, so the amoeba THINKs its attacking its normal prey, but it's actually the neurons in our nose and brains instead...
That episode of HOUSE when the weed-growing cop got shot and Foreman also got infected. Great two episodes!
Yeah, don't tell us what countries this is in so we all freak out.
Then…how do you get it? If drinking the water doesn’t do it…then what? Or is it only if your lucky or does it have to go up your nose?
Its also very rare for this bacteria to kill, cuz it has to get through your nose, your blood, and survive inside your brain, all of which are littered with defenses
Well I hated swimming anyway
I used to have nightmares about this.
Guys, i kinda had a lot of hosepipe water in my mouth and some got in that place that leads to the nose via the throat, am i at risk? I think its worth mentioning that i feel quite ill btw
Ok, but, what countries does that parasite live in?
Fairly sure he never mentioned where it's from lol
Everyone stressing about The Amoeba, but from 2009 thru 2018 it only killed 34 people, while in the same time, 5000 people got shot accidentally. (Sources: CDC and NSC)
I tjink it is obvious that you should then explain a dalt water variation of this amoeba.
Ok so we got one job, mutate the amoeba so that it can infect with just drinking the water
"Naegleria fowleri has been detected on all continents except Antarctica. It has been described as the cause of PAM in more than 16 countries."
Just to confirm, victims don't come back from the dead with a hunger for eating brains?
What Countries are they in !?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naegleria_fowleri It can be everywhere where water is warm. It likes high temperature (30-40'C).
All of them. It is found worldwide
But it could still potentially infect you if you happen to choke on the water you are drinking.
Fowl Larry.
Key missing word; WHERE?
Crazy that people let their kids like anywhere near water apperently
New fear unlocked
at least one health agency listing as death 🤔

so what you're saying is that as we get warmer more countries will inevitably have brain eating amoebas and the only way to stop it is to either outright boil the rivers and lakes or use nose plugs for the rest of my human life.
good...good...i was actually thinking of finding another reason for not sleeping at night and having anxiety about during the day...no problem at all...
So where does it live??? What region
Good shit lakes in Germany are cold as fuck even in summer
Geothermal hot pools.
Dallas TX.
Well, i guess im never swimming in a lake again.
I remember studying this parasite. It is so incredibly rare that every person who has ever contracted the disease most likely had some variety of immunologic impairment. [No not AIDS, although that would do it. More likely chronic drug abuse, etc.]
Chronic drug abuse.. yeah, that’s why victims are so often children and immunocompetent young adults. Idiotic attempt at victim blaming and completely false, cited below. The blood brain barrier is mostly physical, not immunologic.

Please put a link to the actual video in the description
Heard about someone in Houston a few years back getting it from flushing their nasal passage with tap water. So horrifying. What if you breathe wrong during a shower?!
I don't go in fresh water south of the MD Line after April
Keep in mind it really has to get up your nose to infect you, like you have to actually inhale it deeply
Please always use sterile water for your sinus irrigation!
okay but what countries
In rare cases, it can be acquired during a shower. Ouch.
Still-Water Lake surfaces. Don't breath through the nose. Ever. Close that nose. Mouth you can survive it...nose...you will die.
Can I get it by getting water In the nose by showering?
Nagelria's patients are increasing in Pakistan .(my country)I'm very scared cuz recently 4 cases were reported in () my city()
So u can’t smell it but u can eat it? Yummy
If you fracture your cribiform plate in your head via diving, that’s a possible route for naegleria Fowleri.
Aight so I guess I’m only drinking cool bottled water?
Well it seems to be mostly southern united states. (not counting other locations) Annual infection rate is very low but I guess bare minimum I'll do is not sniff water again.
There's a woman recently that got that when she was cleaning her sinuses out from tap water and the parasite worked itself up to her brain
I love how he says the only way to come back does it mean but is to avoid it, but then he doesn’t tell us where it is located.
Cause that’s helpful! 😢
Warm fresh water literally says in the video
