Building a Contemporary Walnut Coffee Table

- In this video, I build a contemporary walnut coffee table from rough stock using a design I created in Sketchup. I go step by step through the lumber selection, rough milling, shaping, joining, and finishing.
Along the way I encounter a couple rough lessons, but I hope through this video I can inspire others to take on a similar project and experience similar results while learning from my mistakes. Thank you for watching!

From a fellow woodworking hobbyist, thanks for taking the time to film this and post the video. Appreciate your effort to create the content
Terrific video. I like the final result. Turned out beautifully. I appreciate you showing your mistake and solution to overcome the mistake. Very well done.
Thanks so much! I’m very glad you enjoyed the video!
Cool - shout out to your Dad.
Very nice work. I lose 30 IQ points during glue up LOL Thats funny! truer words were never spoken
🤣
Andrew, I am a senior in high school in woodshop class and I came across your video on the walnut coffee table. For my senior project I am planning on doing something similar. The way that you built this table shows true craftsmanship and I would love to test my skills. Is there any way that you could share a cut list or the plans that you used throughout this build.
Excellent video, good touch with the 3D render. And don’t apologise for using good equipment, it’s there to be used
Another great display of craftsmanship! Great job
I’m thinking about building a coffee table, but I definitely don’t have all the tools to pull that off. That is a very esthetically pleasing piece and man, would it look beautiful in my living room. thank for a great video!
Nice video with great detail. Thanks for keeping the error, nice solution from your dad.
Great video! I’m going to shamelessly mimic your design for my own walnut coffee table. Thanks for sharing your build!
Looking great Andrew. Miss having you in the shop!
Thanks Frank! Miss being there too and hopeful will get back that way in the near future for a visit!
Beautiful table! You've inspired me to give it a go!
Nice table build

I’m in the middle of a similar build right now and this video was super helpful. Nice work
Glad it was helpful! Hope your project turns out great
Your work and attention to detail has inspired me to build this coffee table and a pair of end tables to match. I love the simple but elegant style of your table. Nice job!
Hey! I am planning on making this table, do you have a cut list or plans that you used for your build?
Beautiful table and excellent video content
Thank you very much!
Beautifully done!!
Loved the two videos I watched from the channel. Informative and entertaining, great job!
Thank you very much! Appreciate your support!
Very informative and well done video Andy! The coffee table is beautiful!
Glad you liked it! Thanks!
Nice work, Andrew!
Thanks!
Great content I love watching you work!
Thank you for watching!
Very beautiful🙏🏻☺️
Thank you! Cheers!
Has the bottom shelf bowed at all during the warmer months?
Curious, when you had to rip the lower shelf and reglue it in place to get it to fit, didn't you end up with gaps at the corners, since losing the width of the blade?
Great question! Yep I lost about 1/8” in shelf width because of the blade width from the saw. Fortunately I had already factored it in to have a little bit of a gap at the corners anyways for natural expansion and contraction of the shelf so it was just 1/16” more in each corner. I even checked before making this move to make sure aesthetically it wouldn’t look bad and fortunately it looked totally fine
Beautiful job! Thanks. Can you recommend an alternate finish for walnut, any polyurethanes or lacquers?
I think any clear coat finish like that would work great as well, and it would also help maintain the natural color of the walnut even more than the Rubio I used. I chose to use the hard wax oil option just because I knew that would be easier to potentially spot treat certain areas down the road. Cheers!
Beautiful table and great video! Would using dowels work to join the stretchers to the legs?
Absolutely! The domino is a handy tool but dowels would work perfectly too. I’d recommend using at least two of them for each joint
Is veneer walnut real walnut? Also usually if veneer walnut is used, what’s the wood inside?
The veneer part is real walnut planed very thin over a substrate, which is usually some sort of plywood or particle board in cheaper furniture. I know a lot of people who make their own veneer like to use Baltic birch as the substrate since it’s a higher quality plywood. Hope that helps!
Why no new posts? You already got 1k followers, keep going
Unfortunately my day job got in the way of shop time for a while, but finally getting some time back and coming out with some new content!
Any chance of buying the plans and cut list?
Any luck? I am looking to make this table too.
Hi sorry, I’m just catching up on comments now but unfortunately don’t have any plans or a cut list! I do have the dimensions of all the parts though if you’d like me to DM those to you.
