When a piece of clothing doesn't feel right, it really doesn't matter how good others think it looks. The color of the sweater surprised me most because on my screen, it is a rich, caramel color.

minkie , I agree regarding feeling good on something. There were occasions where people tell me that something really look great on me but I just didn’t feel right and therefore when one doesn’t feel right one loses one’s overall confidence.

I thought something was wrong with either my phone or my eyes! The colour, 'orange' to me represents the fruit 🍊! However, the sweater does have undertones of burnt orange perhaps.

I always feel so guilty when I buy a piece of clothing or shoes, and then don't wear them. Even if it's inexpensive, I feel badly. It's good to know that everyone seems to make purchases that sometimes don't work.

    • @cindynorris5983

Yes! People always talk about things they spent too much money on and don't wear as a mistake, but I feel just as bad about the inexpensive items. I have purchases so much stuff from the clearance rack because it was such a good deal. But how foolish if I only wear them once or twice. Live and learn.

I refer to this as "the lure of beautiful items." All too often I have been sucked in by a gorgeous fabric or jewelry design, only to find later that (as Audrey says) the item doesn't play well with anything else in my wardrobe. Still trying to find that balance between statement/boring.

Autumn Mancuso I try to wear everything at least once before donating it. What I have trouble with is loving that Cape Cod type blue striped sweater dress that is just too warm to wear in the summer...have two or three. Medium knit in a summer theme only works if you go boating. They are now in the donation bag.

So true, Mary. I am older, love unique, interesting, well-fitting, eye-catching stuff (oversize pants and huge earrings for sure). With COVID and much less going out I've been wearing my "nice" tops and pants around the house to water the plants, dust the floor, get the email, read a book with a cup of tea and yes, walk out to give the horse a carrot. @@tonpap Goodness, you are so right! I am the same. I love that military green color but it looks horrid on me. Not only am I a winter, but I'm a deep winter, which I think is limiting in terms of colors that look good on me. I love pastels but if they are not icy, I can't wear them. And it's hard to find icy. I can't wear jewel tones- they make me look like I'm trying too hard. I wear a lot of black (it's really my favorite), white, & navy.

    Great video!
There are many regret purchases in my past. The key is to purge these items and move on, without being hard on ourselves. I consider these purchases a "sunk cost" which helps me get over it quickly. And Goodwill benefits from these cast-offs.
I will often look at sale prices on designer goods and then take a step back and ask myself if I'd still like it if it were made by an unknown designer. It keeps me honest/humble. Just because the price is amazing doesn't mean that we should go for it! And that doesn't only go for designer goods, but for fantastic fabrics (silk, etc.) that are the wrong color or shape.

    Hi Audrey!
I case you are looking for video suggestions - I would love to hear more about olive skin tone and how to work with it!
I didn't find enough meaningful information on the web, and I really love how you explain concepts, so I think me and other people with olive skin would greatly benefit from you sharing your knowledge.
You already saved me a lot of money and effort by telling that one can have pale, but yellowish skin with cool/neutral undertone, and I had that "Aha! That's why I don't look good in orange, warm beige, but do look good in ivory and cool green, no matter that my skin definitely has a yellow overtone".
    Thank you!

Thank you for this very honest video! I feel frustrated when I see intentional, ethical, curated, sustainable, etc. bloggers gush so much about a new purchase, but then the item is never to be seen or heard of again in future posts! This was refreshing to see you as a blogger be totally open about mistaken purchases and how you parted with them in a thoughtful, non wasteful way. I also enjoyed your discussion of admiring something that someone else is wearing, but realizing it may not fit in with your unique personal style- and that’s ok! One thing I’ve learned on my own personal style journey is the need to see the difference between something I appreciate about what someone else is wearing versus what I would actually wear myself. I now view seeing other’s style in the same way I view art- I can enjoy many pieces of art in a museum, but I wouldn’t hang every piece in my home.

Orange? The sweater looks soft caramel on screen, and is beautiful! Same with the sunglasses - the shape is perfect for you - and I can't see what is wrong with them - but if you don't feel good about them, I understand. Lot of thinking involved in this video, and it begs the question (at least to me) do you ever buy anything just for fun?!!

Audrey has a capsule wardrobe and practices thoughtful purchasing, so I don't know that "shopping for fun" makes sense in this case, as often those purchases aren't consistent with her lifestyle and will likely result in more regretted purchases, since fun purchases typically aren't made thoughtfully.
I don't recall if her motivation is for sustainability/ethical reasons or more personal/financial reasons, but I do know she promotes a "thoughtful purchasing" mindset, so I thought I would chime in here.
Also, I agree with you and everyone else, the sweater looked closer to dark caramel or maybe a more subtle burnt orange(?) on my screen.

What do you mean buying for fun though? I for example consider it fun and great if I buy something I need and I like and which looks good on me at the same time. Sometimes I would buy things I don't really need, but I still think a lot before my purchase, like how much I like it, how good does it look on me and where would I wear it. Otherwise it doesn't make sense at all for me to spend money on it. I'm not a millionare lol.

I loved hearing what your personal misses were. I’m the same in that my hopes for all things I buy will last forever or get worn for years to come but I’ve also learned that we can just never know! I have pieces I swore would add value to my wardrobe and literally never get worn because I’m not being quite honest with myself or didn’t realize it wouldn’t work with my style-but again I wouldn’t have learned that lesson as well if I didn’t get that item. Being as intentional as we can definitely helps keeps waste low even if not all pieces make the cut! You are right that not all is lost. If anything our wardrobe misses teach us something and make even better decisions later! Thanks for the great video!

I tend towards warm colours - I'm an autumn, and love autumnal colours. The sunglasses and sweater are the sort of colours I would go for; it's a shame that you feel they don't suit you, but that's life. You always look so well put-together and polished!
I'm slowly sorting my wardrobe out; I've got a long way to go and need to remind myself not to buy burgundy if it shades cool because it doesn't look right on me!

I really enjoyed how you analyse the reasons why you end up not wearing these articles. I myself have many things I love in a sentimental sense but do not make me feel confident by wearing them. I think in my mind I associate certain clothes and accessories with ideas, moments or memories but that is not an efficient or healthy "relationship" with my wardrobe. I usually gravitate towards the same kinds of pieces and the majority (!) is always in storage often never-worn. I regret how terribly wasteful that is but sometimes it's hard to let things go.

Hi Audrey. You made me smile today because I have the exactly same jewellery and clothing mistakes. Im 167cm tall so I have learned big girl needs big jewellery and bags. But it does not always fit. As you say...it must feel right and I have happily followed your rules and found a few jewellery items I always turn to...and they go along with my wardrobe. Your "cupcake" feeling I also have had!;) wrong "red" colour on a beautiful cashmere sweather. And baggy bottoms is not my cup of tea...too much fabric for my lifestyle. In fact I dont think they do anything for either petite nor tall girls like me. Thank you for inspiring me to learn from my failures..not just forget about them ;)

It's so funny to see the differences between what works for people and what doesn't! I own an identical looking pair of sunglasses and love them, and my wardrobe is mainly cream, camel (or perhaps 'orange,' as you said; the sweater looked like a deep camel/caramel to me!) olive and burgundy. That sweater would fit in so perfectly with my closet, but I wouldn't even touch those pants with a ten foot pole! It's always so interesting to hear your thought process when making these choices. Thanks for another lovely video!

I have learned so much from UA-cam videos like yours Audrey. I am 73, a retired professional who used to wear high quality blazers, silk blouses and skirts in my profession. The odd thing though is I was paying $100 and up for all my blazers and silk bouses....in the 80s from Lord and Taylor, Saks, and Neiman Marcus...sales only for NM! Now Zara and other places charge that for blazers and even coats. The difference, besides made outside the USA by low wage workers, is the quality of materials. Structural garment parts like interfacings, shoulder pads and trims like buttons were so much higher in quality in the past, as was the fabric. I love how you buy to maintain in your wardrobe for years. This is what everyone used to do. Styles changed slowly except for casual clothes for the youth market eg jeans styles. I still stay away from trends. I mever have worn low rise or mid rise jeans bec I am a figure 8 so my high hip measurement is the same as my low hip.....I would not have been able to keep those up! I learned long ago not to wear boxy jackets, short or long ones, the double breasted non fitted ones look great on the tall and super slim...not on my petite frame! We have to know what styles work best for us as individuals, colors too, so we dont get tempted by marketers. I cannot wear wide leg clam digger pants, as they were called in the 70s, like your black ones either. ITs good you have trained your eye to see that something is "off" and then analyze the why. You will save yourself many future mistakes.

Always love your videos, they're so simple but also so deeply informative, you just make such pleasing videos! I also have to say what a big inspiration a lot of videos about looking what you already have in your closet have been for me. I recently made jean purchases, a medium wash and a white pair and the amount of combos I've found using those new pants and shirts (and jackets) I already had is kind of amazing. Just off the top of my head, 5 or 6 shirts that either I wore but looked plain in, or barely wore at all are now CORE pieces!

Thanks for the learnings Audrey. The hardest thing is having regrets about purchases and then not being able to part with them because we keep on going through our mind how much money and time we have spent on those items . I have to keep on reminding myself that those unworn items may be appreciated by others. Regret sometimes keeps us from moving forward. I have donated thousands of dollars of clothing, purses and furniture. I also have many working clothes items in my wardrobe which I will be donating to shelters where for example women will be requiring nice clothing to wear to interviews or potential new jobs. Keep safe !

Not sure if you’ve heard of it, but I suspect that you would be a type 2, secondary 4 in the “Dressing Your Truth” system which is very consistent with what you shared in this video, as well as consistent with your sweet voice and demeanor, current hairstyle, makeup and the colors, jewelry and clothing styles (especially tops) you prefer. In that system the “secondary 4” explains your impeccable poise and why you like to bring some structure into your overall look (eg pants).

About 4 years ago (I think) grey was trending big. I paired it & purchased with lots of black. First problem is I have cats and cat hair really shows. Second both colors make me look older if next to my face! Like you, I sent them to my lounge wear area, but even when lounging they make me feel blah! I will be keeping the grey & black bottoms, using a lint roller, but slowly am switching to tees, sweatshirts & soft sweaters that go better with my complexion!

I think I understand your problem with the black pants. I’m also a slim petite, and really like wide leg pants, but I’ve found that the fabric used is the key to fit. Structured fabric like twill with fly front and belt loops (example: Everlane) look good on me, while drapey unstructured elastic waist pants just look and feel like pajama pants. I’ve learned that petites need structured style clothing.

That Naadam sweater tricked me too! I also have olive undertones, and I covered that sweater for a long time. I finally bought it, and when I put it on it was just a huge “no”. The color was totally different from what I expected. What’s so funny is all the comments about it being caramel not orange!!! I thought the exact same thing before I saw it in person! But I know what you mean, Audrey. Totally. By the way, I also have the same thoughts about Elizabeth Suzann - love the creator, but I just don’t think the styles would suit my frame or my wardrobe.

Try hand-dyeing the sweater a darker colour if it has a natural fibre component and not purely synthetic. You may not end up with the result you were expecting but it's fun experimenting and sometimes you get a great result. I dyed some bright camel pants 'jeans blue' and they came out a beautiful teal colour - perfect for my wardrobe.
