  • Senior Editor Zack Courts is always arriving to office after his commute with a bunch of opinions about the bike he’s riding. Too much this, not enough that, and occasionally has some decent insights. We thought some of it might help consumers or entertain enthusiasts, so we strapped a camera and microphone to the side of his helmet and told him to turn it on when he leaves his house. A lot of him talking in his helmet is complaining about drivers, yelling at red lights, and wondering why billboards aren’t more expensive. But sometimes he actually talks about the bike, and those are the parts we keep. Got a bike you would like to see discussed? Let us know and we’ll send him home on that one next.

It’s no secret we’re always trying to get our staff to work a little harder. Especially the ones that always seem to have too much to say. “Write it down!” the boss yells, exasperated. Senior Editor Zack Courts is a classic case, always arriving to office after his commute with a bunch of opinions about the bike he’s riding. Too much this, not enough that, and occasionally has some decent insights that we thought might help consumers or entertain enthusiasts.

There’s a brand new one for sale (still) at Yamaha’s and I tell you what, the moment I saw the damn thing live I was truly impressed by the amount of details and the overall quality thrown into this bike...Man it looked beautiful. I never rode one but my first impression was that this bike is no joke, it’s a man’s toy, it delivers. It is muscular, alive, menacing, 1970’s style, high quality, you know, it’s the whole package kind of deal and my instant regret was that I saw it only weeks after I’ve just purchased my Harley "Forty Eight" as a “garage partner” for my Triumph T100.

A month back I joined this demotour with a friend of mine. We switched motorcycles with a group (I had 12 motorcycles total that day). Than that one moment I tried out a Vulcan (first time on a ''chopper'') and my friend had the XSR900. He was constantly laughing on the intercom and I only saw wheelies and fun in the back mirror of my borring Vulcan.
Than it was my turn. It realy was a suprise to ride this thing. A suprise in an (i think) ugly box.
I road the new GSX R, MT10 and XR that day, but this little fun-bomb was the most fun I had.
I wouldn t buy one and maybe it was fun in contrast with the vulcan, but it was most defenitly a great bike and it gave me a big smile!

To be fair, it's the EPA that demands that low end stumble. My 07 919 was a bit like that as well. I used my throttle hand to keep the throttle open on downshifts and just motor away through corners. I like the modernfunkyretro of the XSR. I saw it at Daytona last year. Very cool. Great motor. Cruise or get on it and blast around. Be cool when you stop. People will chat about the bike.

I think the reason they went for this look is probably a British thing, the classic Yammy colors and stripes has always been something of a 80's-90's English love. I think Yamaha are aware of this but probably kept it also as a test for the US market. I think if anyone British is watching these videos they might hopefully say the same. PS loved the Panigale and Ducati reviews,

Hello Zack .. How to ask this question and make it simple.?? .So many choices out in the world at this point ..BACKGROUND I am a 67 year old potter who started riding back in the early 70's in Wales .. I did not love how much my Bonneville broke down in the wet (Lucas ) but loved a lot about that bike ..Back in America the 1975 Honda 400 4 then the 750 triple Yamaha with the shaft (30K & a bit top heavy ) Got a 1961 R69 s with the Earle forks(my favorite bike of all times) .Later a 79 R80 (40K). A decade later a first year 750 Virago. 20 years of parenting .... in 2015 Getting back into riding I bought a 1700 2007 Midnight Star for the fun of it ..It was inexpensive had 2800 miles and has done fine for the last 16K or two riding seasons .I go through tires because of all the back roads and its 750 lb. weight .The endless touque in a lot of fun ... SO The QUESTION : I ride 10% Dirt roads 10% Thruways and 80 % amazing New England back roads .Lots of bumps dips and twisties .I have had to get fork seals and tires more than normal :) . What simple bike with great suspension that wont scrape pegs all day long would you recommend for nice technical back road riding ? PS I have a .30' INSEAM . I know go look at everything ... If you were to say a bike or two or three bike what would they be ???? All the best , Guy my short list Tiger XR 800 Moto GuzziV7 Street Scrambeler .. V STrom 650 R1200r (with bar risers ) old shoulders :) BMW 750 gs ... Come to New England great roads

one thing I still dislike about my FZ-07 that I noticed on this bike too is the placement of the horn... I use my horn mainly for emergencies... and during an emergencies, I'm probably gonna be grabbing clutch. but in that position, awkwardly releasing my grip, extending my thumb allllllllll the way to the end of the control block thingy to reach the small tiny horn button is inconvenient (not that I get into emergency situation frequently). it feels like the designers added it as an afterthought...

All of the test videos I have seen thus far indicate the bike is much more flickable, with improved road feel. Some have even gone so far as to say it now feels like a larger, more powerful Street Triple R. So, that is why I am interested to see what he makes of it. :)

There is a slightly used demo model of this bike at the motor sport shop up the street. I really want to buy it but I;m a little worried about the throttle thing annoying me. Is it really that bad.? Can it be tuned out. I have a sprint 955 triple now. Really like that bike too. a little heavy though. I wish I could lane slit here in Seattle but people just FREAK OUT.. They will literally pull in front of you if they see you coming.

Great video! It sounds like Yamaha's FI street and dirt bikes share the same throttle traits (twitchy). After adjusting mapping on my 2015 wr250f with no improvement, I finally ordered a 'G2 throttle tamer' and wa-la! Much much better. Much smoother from the start with no loss of power when/ where you need it. Yamaha is going to make G2 a lot of $ until they straighten their FI out P.S. I have no affiliation with G2 but will accept royalties if they send them : )

Why not just get an FZ09? Because that bike looks douchey as hell, that's why. The XSR is infinitely cooler!

@ 2:07 - I heard/read that Yamaha was able to fix that problem with the throttle response for the 2016 xsr900 models....maybe that specific bike you're riding (not all xsr900s in general) has that problem?
But if it's true, i guess i'll have to wait for next year's model before i pull the trigger.
