Had our interim Company CO who was a 1st LT spent all morning in the CS chamber in just a mask and cammies. Left his smokes in his pocket. When he met us at the smoke pit and lit up he began to power vomit. Like head injury vomit. Like corpsman up vomit. It was spectacular

In the CF (Canadian Forces) we are taught that those little iron sights on the top of our ELCAN C79A2 optic is not used for actually aiming, but more for faster target acquisition at when on patrols, i.e. you see a target in the forest at 200 meters, you use the little sights on the target then look through the optic as its almost impossible to find them otherwise sometimes.

That is assuming your C79 still has more then a set of worn off nubs on top. None of mine ever have. Rubber iron sights. Amazing design choice.

Before deployment to the Balkans in 2003 my unit went through less than lethal training. We had to be OC certified and go through that silly obstacle course the military does for OC cert. One of the guys in my unit made it through to the end, but was freaking out about it burning and such. The moron ran to the showers and stripped down and jumped in. Well if your fave and head are covered in OF spray and you stand under a shower head, where does said OF spray and water mixture run to ? Yep you guessed it, the mixture ran down his chest to his crotch all over his sack, pecked, and even entered the tip. Needless to say he was screaming like he was being murdered. Cried like a bitch for over an hour....

This aint a military story, but it's good. We went out for a week in the BC riding quads, camping etc. We carried bear spray cause the Grizzlies in that area are all over. Buddy was worried about having his bear spray ready to go while riding his Dirt bike. Thought it might fly out of his belt pouch while riding. So the dumbass stuck it head first into these weird pants he wore biking.
All I remember was going up this hill, behind him, and got a whiff of pepper spray. It's got that smell. Next thing he literally dumps his bike 3/4 up the hill, screaming! HAHAHA The dummy soaked his nutz with bearspray so bad, we actually had to rush him to the hospital 2 hours away!! He was crying like a baby almost the whole way!
And the emergency staff, all the DR's and Nurses couldn't stop laughing, well they tried, but all had a shit eating grin while getting him in.
I laughed so hard I puked, plus the smell of that shit was getting to us too....Funniest thing I ever seen.

What a dumb ass, even I payed attention. Instead of running to the showers I stayed in the breezeway for more than an hour with my buddies. Drill instructor told us we were the smart ones. Everyone else ran to the showers even with clothes on.

During academy we had an instructor who had a habit of saying "if there are no more questions we will break for lunch" or "if there are no more questions we will see you tomorrow" We of course had that guy who always has a question, all day every day but especially when it was time to eat or go home. When we got to OC day and it was this guys turn to get sprayed he stepped up to the line and the instructor just stood there, refusing to move, act or say anything. Mr. I have a question startd to get nervous and utilizes his go to coping method and opens his fat mouth for his last question. On top of the normal 3 second burst he caught an initial burst right in the ol ask hole. For the remaining week of academy, he never asked another question.

Everyone in the room that had issues with a question in a learning environment. Everyone is beyond stupid. It could be a dumb question sure. When that really good one is asked. Can be a life changer. Imagine if that individual outranked you and later you were under them. A minute of patients can turn into a year or torture. If the instructor didn’t want any questions he should have shut up instead. This story reeks of false, Mr.? In an academy, unless this is a rare case. It would be rank structured whether its police or military. Unless this just happens to be not America where academy is used interchangably.

We used these in both Iraq and Afg deployments this is my #1 with Acog w/ MRD on top 2nd, Eotech with flip magnification site 3rd. Elcan has the quicker change to a 1x for clearing rooms which I personally perfer. It definitely is heavy compared acog. The field of view during firefights makes ALL the difference during engagements (personal perspective, these are very successful engaging out to 500-600m). I always ran with Elcan Specter DR given the options. I know a couple of guys ran 45 deg side mount MRD's along with their Elcan. I just didn't find it worth it given the quick switch on the Elcan. If I thought I was going to be engaging CQC/CQB with a personal weapon I'd buy the Elcan but I doubt that so I will stick with cheaper options currently. Hands down I think it's the best optic I've used in combat.✌

I notified the Drill Sergeant, he checked and said I was good to go. He then steps back 5 feet and tells another Drill Sergeant that dude is fucked.... Sure enough the moment I walked in I could feel the gas. By the time they wanted us to break the seal on our mask I was already deep into the agony of the gas. Sadly I dropped my mask and had to go back in after it... LOL Good times.

No joke you read into my life. Flash back to 06, young buck Esta walks into the CS chamber in AF basic. I’m the second in line to take off my mask. The first is this chick who was a PT monster and probably a manlier man than I (as a compliment not an insult) and I figure I’ll gauge how bad it is based on her reaction. She takes off her mask and is cool for a split second and I’m like cool, too easy. Then she breaks and loses it. So my turn comes and they tell me to take off my mask and take a deep breath, so I do. A deep breath. Like I cleared the chamber deep breath. CS gas and I became one being for a moment in time deep breath. They ask me to say my favorite sandwich and instead of turkey sandwich one white, it comes out as “SINFBAUGRB *death*”
    It was fun

This was the optic issued to my best friend for his Block II M4A1 while he was in the 1st Ranger Battalion for his tour in Kandahar (during which he did see some combat). He said he would have preferred an EOTech or possibly an Aimpoint Micro, but learned to appreciate the Elcan -- especially in his role as an AG in a 2-man MG team, as he spent much of his time in blocking positions providing overwatch rather than running and gunning or clearing rooms. He vastly preferred the Elcan to the ACOG.
The Specter's only real cons in his opinion were the weight and bulk along with being slightly slower/less intuitive in acquiring targets in CQB 1x than a dedicated zero magnification reflex optic like the aforementioned EOTech or Aimpoint, not to mention having to deal with eye relief unlike with those two. However, he loved its versatility and the longer he spent on it the more he grew to appreciate the reticle on range day -- particularly at long range. He also said it was built like a rock and he never had any issues with it that I can recall, except for a few possible zero shifts (can't quite remember)?

This is by far the best optic I have ever ran overseas. I never liked the ACOG and back then we didn't have the x3 magnifiers to add on to Aimpoints or EoTechs. As he said you only have 1 or 4 power and nothing inbetween. With that said I learned that either I needed x4 or I didn't. The eye relief was perfect I didn't have to run it as close as I did with the ACOG which made CQB problematic (w/ ACOG that is). The illumination was great and worked extremely well with both PVS14 & 31B. I didn't have a problem with the mount but I would prefer to have the arms collapse inward towards the center of the optic. I would love to run it on one of my rifles at home but, I'm a budget gun and optic guy and ahhh.... Yeah I can't buy an optic for the same price that I buy my rifle.

  • @Agislife1960
    @Agislife1960 5 років тому +22

What I really like about the Elcan is the eye relief doesn't change very much between 1X and 4X, there are a few variable power scopes out there, where you have to completely change the position of your head, when you change magnifications.

When I was in the police academy, we had to do an exposure drill where they basically gassed a small shed with an OC fogger and we would have to retrieve our cuffs, do a task and say message on the radio. I volunteered to go first because I wanted to go home. The instructor takes my cuffs, fogs the room, and I go in. Now I'm in this orange haze of OC desperately looking for my cuffs. I'm looking on the ground, behind the loose insulation, up in the rafters and I just can't find them. The instructor yells at me from outside, "Why aren't you calling out on the radio?!" "Sir, I can't find my handcuffs!" All of a sudden the door opens and my handcuffs hit me in the back because he realized he never threw them in. Good times.

I’m a Marine Reservist and when I went through the police academy the instructors made me sing the Marine Corps Hymn and mark time when they hit me with the taser. So I’m doing my thing and I started to sing and mark time not knowing when I was going to get hit.
So there I was mark timing and singing from the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli... but I got hit right after Montezuma and instead of saying to the “shores” of Tripoli I said a word that rhymes with shores thats slang for prostitutes.... it starts with a w and ends in oars...
Needless to say the instructors thought it was hilarious. I didn’t stop marching in place though nor did I stop singing.

One thing that wasn't mentioned is that the flat surface on the top was there for mounting something like a Trijicon RMR or similar RDS. A buddy who served in Afghanistan who used the scope on his rifle had it set up that way, which he said he used for clearing structured, etc. He also said he was happy with the Elcan, saying it had great ruggedness, he and the other members of his platoon who used it felt it was a 'proper combat optic', designed specifically for the kind of situation they were in, more so than others in common use. That was just his opinion, thought I'd mention it... I've tried one at the range a few times, was impressed with the clarity, and I really liked the flip-lever thing for switching. But it was kinda like having a small brick attached to the top of small, lightweight M4-kinda rifle. A brick made outta platinum and stuffed with cocaine, apparently, given the price...!

The bus drivers all had to drive with their heads out the window. Then the laundry crew had to wash and dry everyone's laundry. The oil in CS didn't wash out all the way so when the clothes went back I to the dryers they started to cook back out the CS, and made a kind of mini gas chamber for those on the laundry crew.

one of the things that makes the dr specter so iconic is its a fog and frost resist prismatic acog with a 1st focal plane quick adjust, and there isnt anything else quite like it on the market. a lot of people sware it is the best combat optic for these particular reasons. however 1st focal tho the rectical scales the hashmarks a 1/4x adjust is minimal within effect. and usually these has marks take greater notice with longer range scopes a 6x, 8x, 9x, 10, where that is the start of noticing the hash mark variable and only becomes more prominate for long range markmen shooting after that with your 15x 25x 30x 50x scopes. where for sniper long range pricision shooting 1st focal is extremly important for hash mark acquisition. but a small 4"-6" optical refractal on a prismatic lense is only going to see half of the 1st focal refractal. thus the 1st focal hash growth between 1 and 4 x is only moderating the marks as if a 1 and 2x so there is very little difference in the focal adjustments, tho the objective zoom is 1 and 4x. and like you said the 1x and occasionally on 4x an acs objective dot and circle would be very nice to have. this is what makes the Russian variant of the specter with a thin chrismas tree for balastic drop is an additional + and the acs dot and circle is an extreemly nice added bonus tho it is 2nd focal plane and the has marks dont adjust, you have that dot and ciricle to manage the difference for quick action rapid battle responce, and you still have the quick flip between 1 and 4x. making the russian dr specter kind of a perfect acog for a short barrel baowulf in combat scenarios. cuz you have that 1x refractal with dot and circle, then you have the quick flip if you need to aim at something a little futer out. and the korean and chineese replica versions are like airsoft toys. so if considering this optic i recommend the expensive us versions, or the updated russian spetsnaz versions, which is on the banned list for import to the usa... but they are out there. how to tell the difference. well the korean and chineese toy versions usually have a 2032 battery at 16-22oz so they are lighter with cheeper polymers and use a very small battery. the russian variant has a chromium steel lever and kinda stiff till you use it a bit and has a cr123a battery which has 72hr of operational life and when powered off lasts for 32days. a professional grade battery for a professional grade optic, and because its larger it goes from 26.2oz too 27.4oz. so the oriental versions are ligther under a lb, the us version is just over a lb, and the russian variant 1.7lb. and for this reason is why some do not like the russian variant is because its weight. but to some added weight is more stability like in a baowulf scenario. where for the same weight difference you can get the us specter dr2 with a 1.5-6x quick flip, then that front focal is actually good with the 6x quickflip. so IF you are going to get one, i recommend the 1.5-6x us variant, or the 1-4x spetsnaz with acs+urban dot christmas tree. and that is knowing your rifle, and knowing thy enemies. but you can save a lot of money getting a lighter fixed 3x swampfox trihawk w urban acs and a cr123a, that has a better dexmark and bash score than either of these. and that is knowing your wallet.

Using standard varible 1-8 hunting scopes i found i only ever used two magnifications; 1.8 where the scope shadow disappeared and gave me a large close picture, and 6 where the magnification was comfortable for all longer ranges 150m- 500m with a .308 scout. It seems in stress situations you dont want an aray of diferent magnification, you just need close and far. You see this with LAV sights as well.

While I didn't enjoy the darkened weird frat boy initiation inside, when I staggered out, the ropes of snot leaving my body cleared my sinuses for the first time in three weeks. I asked permission to go through again and finish the job. Since this was the beginning of the All-Volunteer Army, my Drill Sergeant just called me the craziest motherfucker he'd ever met, then told me to fall in at the end of third platoon if I was serious. My sinuses were okay for the rest of Basic, believe it or not.
