Craziest range story. May 10, 2012. I had just finished up chronoing some 300WM ammo on the rifle range and drove over the pistol side to shoot with a friend only to realize I hadn't brought any pistol mags. So instead, I dropped a 22 conversation bolt into my AR and fired one mag before getting bored. My buddy and I discussed where we were going for lunch and as I turned to walk to my truck, I felt what I thought was someone hitting me in the calf with a baseball bat. Long story short, I hopped around on one leg for a few seconds wondering wtf had happened, only to find out that some morbidly obese individual was shooting about 5 lanes down to our right when the plastic folding chair he was sitting in COLLAPSED, sending him onto his back where he apparently squeezed a 22LR round off that zipped straight through my right calf. Beat that!

Travers Kilroy Cooper Alvirez At the time, I thought so, too. In reality it was just a freak accident. Yes, he was older and overweight with (apparently)slow reflexes. But he was sitting in a chair supplied by the range and that was what failed. I've sat at the bench many times to get a reliable zero and even to shoot, but never had the misfortune of a chair collapsing underneath me. The range took responsibility for the entire thing and sweeping changes were made, including big improvements to the pistol range where it happened. I guess I could have sued and maybe even own the place now, but I didn't want to lose one of the only good places left to shoot near me. I have no residual effects from being shot. Just a couple of tiny scars on my calf. It could have been much worse, but it wasn't. It just is what it is.

Travers Kilroy Cooper Alvirez Thanks, man. I appreciate that. Yeah, I thought about it while I was in the emergency room and realized it was just a freak accident. I just can't have hard feeling about that.
As for the Commies finding out that it even happened, this is a range where all of the local LE agencies train, so once they found out about it, they sent someone to the hospital just to make sure it was just an accident. Once they knew the story, it was never mentioned in the local media. They don't want their local 1000 yard range getting any negative attention any more than i do. Haha.

Had a pair of guys show up at the range shooting an AR-15 and they were having trouble hitting some jugs at about 30 yards. I made the observation that they had an A2 front sight post on a cheap AR-15 and no rear sight whatsoever. Conversation went like this.
    Me: "Having trouble hitting?"
    Them: "A little bit."
    Me: "Where's your rear sight?"
Them: *Looks at gun* "Rear sight?"

That's to funny I had the exact same incident happen to me. Was out at the range and a guy was moaning about how his AR was trash. I asked him what's wrong and looked at it, it was a nice rifle then I suddenly realized that he had no rear sight just a mag pull MBUS front sight. So I showed him mine and pointed to my rear back up sight and could see the light go on. Just to funny, would have never guessed.

Range story. 5 guys shooting at the line. 1 was a very loud look at me larpy guy. New shooter walk up to the line and asks to go cold to post his targets. Everyone make’s their guns safe but larpy guy didn’t open his bolt. New shooter asked him to open his bolt. Larpy guy insists there are not rounds in his rifle because the magazine is out. Larpy guy picks up his rifle somehow bumps his trigger that was not on safe and send a round flying up in the air. New shooter turned out to be a range officer and kicks the guy off the line and bans him from the range.

If he's already down range and there is a possibility of it being chambered then don't go near or touch the firearm. Once downrange is clear then the person who left it chambered should be banned.

I remember shooting a Glock 17 at an indoor range during the Clinton Ban (spits). I was using some 17 round ProMags (spits again). The guy in the next lane was using some Scherer 33rd magazines in his Glock. He would take one out of it's plastic bag, load it, test it, and then put it back in the bag. He had about five of them and told me he had about a dozen more at home. "I got them for only $89 apiece. I try them out once to make sure they work and then I stash them." He gave me a knowing smile. "They're only going to increase in value!"
About a year later the ban sunset.

Not a crazy story but when I turned 18 and was able to go shooting by myself Id always bring my M1 Garand and a couple of Garand safe reloads. And EVERY TIME I would have every single RSO hovering over my shoulder because they were so fascinated with the fact that someone so young was shooting a WWII battle rilfe rather than an AR15 and hitting the target at 400 yards. Great group of people btw considering most were old veterans. For those who care, Oct 1944 SA receiver, CMP walnut that I sanded off the "fat" and refinished in raw Linseed oil, and the rest of the rifle is mostly SA but it did go through a rebuild in the 50s.

Not what is suppose to happen when you pull the trigger. The range goes completely silent, smoke cleared and there standing there with the launch tube in there hands in shock, luckily no one was hurt. Needless to say every team firing after that was on edge, the Army in the 90s was fun.

Adam Fazio Seen the Same thing but with ADATS when i was with the Canadian Forces ( yes Que the Canadian army jokes and “eh” now) . Anyways my trade as an Ammo Tech is we know all and see all ammunition Forces wide. And responsible for being on site for any land based missile shoots since we are also EOD. So now our missiles are 20+ years at this point. 3 times that day we had interesting events. 1. Missile leaves tube and 10 meters BOOM! Firing Line goes into shock. Me keeps drinking coffee. 2nd missile: guidance fails and comes out of the tube and crashed instantly into the ground. So war head, missile components, and the rocket motor burning and pieces everywhere. EOD TIME!. #rd time was probably the scariest. Again guidance failure and the thing launches and goes verticals into the sky.... no one knows where the thing went. So a few butt clenched minutes later finally spot the pent missile fall to the ground 800 meters out and detonates on impact.
50 missiles fires 3 fails. Good day in the end. And i got to do my EOD and write up reports on the failed missiles.

For those of us with aging eyes, have found red dots and LPVO’s took about 20 years off my eyes. Helped bring accuracy pretty close to what it was before I had to embrace the blur. Have a Primary Arms Platinum 1x8 with ACSS reticle, nice optic, but the eye box is picky at full magnification. Very easy to lose sight picture. No problems at 1x. Have a Vortex Razor 1x4 which is great, but the ranging is useless for me, can’t make out the tick marks. May sell them and pony up for a Nightforce, Schmidt Bender, or Leupold. Crazy range story...my sister has an insanely fast trigger finger. Got the attention of some PO’s training on the range next to us once, thought we had a full auto. One of the guys thought he was faster. Bets were placed, and we finished the day with an extra $40.00.

I'm an optical engineer. Trust me when it comes to optics you get what you pay for. Good chromatic correction can literally double the number of lenses that need to be produced, nevermind that the high dispersion glasses needed to correct color can cost 5-15 times as much as the low dispersion glasses some low cost systems use (low dispersion glass doesn't change much with color but it does change. You need a combination of low and high if you want to really control color bleed. This is what the high end systems use and probably some aspheres which are more expensive to produce). Additional alignment procedures can have a big impact on cost as well. Well aligned commercial systems may need to be aligned to within 10-20 microns, millionths of a meter. This takes more than just dropping the glass into a tube like you would with cheap lens systems.
Cheap glass and alignment may do the job well enough for what you need but you'll see a difference side by side, a big one. You'll never know the difference until you look through the systems because the mechanics, they don't change all that much on the outside.

I'm there just low key dying inside as i watch this goober pull an M249 out of his lift gate and then straight away begin to mag dump full auto for what feels like a full minute into the hillside. After the belt runs out he turns to put the SAW back into his van and sees me with my mouth gaping. He quickly chucks that lmg into his weather tech lined trunk and speeds off down the dirt road he came in on, but not before flipping off the hillside and primally yelling at it. I haven't gone back to that desert spot to this day.

So there I was training for a deployment when a brand new pilot dropped us off in the wrong location. When we went to step off the first thing you see is a bomb the size of a man sticking out of the ground. I look to SSgt said are you sure were in the right place? LT said let’s go this way. Aye aye sir! After about walking for 15 minutes through what I imagine Armageddon will look like artillery starts dropping maybe 300 yards away. You could feel the oh shit we are not supposed to be here coursing through every bodies veins. Did a 180 and ran for about 3 miles back through Armageddon and called for evac. Turns out the officers that day forgot their morning ration of crayons.

Training in the USMC, with blanks and BFAs. We were right next to I90 down in Camp Pen. My squad was on and admin movement around the CP. Apparently there was a mix-up at the armory, and some saw gunner was apparently test firing his gun, with what he thought were blanks, before the exercise we were about to go on and sent a volley of tracer fire about 40ft over my squads head; and right over the windshield of some civilians driving southbound on I90 between San Clemente and O-Side! Holy Shit!? I'll never forget that shit.
The best part of that is the whole company got to listen to his Platoon Sgt. Yell at him and rip him a new one for about 2 minutes of so.. some interesting questions were asked of that Marine, like do you know the (expletive) difference between blank and live rounds? He was asked if he was sure several times? I don't think his platoon Sgt. Was convinced...There was some speculation about the Marines general intelligence and perhaps a accusation of an in appropriate relationship the gunner may or may not have had with his own Mother; this was brought up several several times as the Marine tried to explain his mistake.... Then the whole company had to find the BFA that was shot off the end of the saw.... so... a company of Marines along I90 searching for a BFA that was shot off the saw at night.. searching with white light.. We found the BFA, it was all fucked up.

Now I'm 23 and these guys seemed to be about my age. They were all nerdy/virgin types and none of them had ever shot a gun. They had brought Ak's and Ar's. After every shot the ring leader kept sweeping me with the loaded rifle. After the 3rd time he did so I told him if he did it again I'd rip the gun out of his hands and beat him with it. After about 2 minutes I just left the range.

Went above and beyond at my job to show my appreciation to a LEO. We talked and became buddies as that always helps to be able to throw a name around if you’re about to get a ticket. Turned out he was the re qualifier instructor and works out of a top notch sheriffs training center. He invited me out on a slow day for him. He was doing inventory to order training ammo so he let me go to town. Full auto MP5’s. All the way up to their .50 Barrett. No charge on anything nor would he take my money. To keep him from maybe getting into hot water I’ll leave where I live out of this, but it’s one of the richest areas in the nation and I couldn’t buy my way into a training facility of this class. Indoor/outdoor with drill areas made to look like real scenarios and many of them with automated pop up/out bad guys and civilians of course to make it real. Went back out to help him with his fishing boat over one weekend to thank him as I probably went through 4000 rounds in his shift. Now I’m getting all my gear at LEO cost. But the funny thing of this story is when I met him if I had to guess his profession as I woke him at 11am. I would have bet he was a drug dealer any day of the week over law enforcement. It blew my mind. But gave us something to talk about and in the end we both got a lot of knowledge out of the experience. The huge discount n free ammo was all my gain tho.

    My range story...
I live in Pennsylvania and a few years back I was a member at a range on the border of New Jersey, so half the members are New Jersey residents. I go to the pistol line and behind me are a bunch of kids who are from New Jersey, they see me lay out all the pistols I brought and they stared at me like I had 10 heads. I also had good experiences like sharing my 30 round magazines with NJ residents. I am no longer a member of the range, not because the place is bad, other than being packed on weekends but I was always creeped out about being one exit away from NJ with all the firearms, ammo and magazines being loaded in my car.
Being one detour away from multiple felonies never jived with me, it was a shame too since the pistol/rifle range was a few miles from SARCO and another firearm place that had an indoor range which rents machine guns.
I also had one trip to this range where I took my best friend and his girlfriend at the time shooting, he is from NYC and was joking around, some old hats that looked like FUDDS were talking behind our backs while I was at the firing line trying to show him how to operate the weapons. His girlfriend heard it all and relayed it to me, they talked shit about my friend being an idiot and not trusting me because I had a shit load of AR and AK pattern rifles with me saying "Who needs that". When we came by they acted all friendly though.
They came from cars with NJ license plates...

At an outdoor range/club. I was a member. It was a rainy day, but the firing lines there are covered. It's a very nice facility. But like I said, it was a rainy day. I brought along a few pistols to shoot that day. One was a Colt 1911. I had a target set up at about ... I dunno ... 25 feet, max. I stapled a few targets to the stand so I wouldn't have to walk out in the rain as much to change targets. Sooooo.... the lowest target was actually pretty close to the ground/grass. And there was a low, grass covered berm 5 or 10 feet behind my target stand. The berm was just 8~10 inches tall.
So I'm standing there shooting. Everything is perfectly normal. But eventually I fire at the low target. I get part-way through a mag and I see something fly back at me. It hit me in the chest. Not really hard, but hard enough to be like WTF DUDE?!?! I put the Colt down on the bench and ... Holy Crap! There's a FMJ .45 slug sitting there on the bench! Not deformed at all, just had the shine knocked of of it LMAO!
I carried that thing around in my pocket for months.
    Story #2
In the Army at NTC Ft Irwin. I was posted there right after AIT at Benning. So they sent a bunch of us to work the on the Live Fire Range (actually an entire desert valley). Driving Sheridans for NCO's & O's. My first rotation out and we're way out front with the visiting Scouts. Forward screening line, right? Night time. Contact is expected tonight. The Scouts begin to report movement down range. The Scout Platoon Leader calls in Arty.
    It is short.
    Very short.
Rocks and sand and shit was landing ON MY TRACK. We actually had to button up LMAO
    Story #3
Also at NTC on the Live Fire Range. Also at night. Out with the Scouts again too. It's a quiet night in the desert, no contact expected this evening.
Buuuttt ..... the Scouts report WHITE HEAD LIGHTS approaching from opposite their position. WTF? In a training/tactical situation, white lights means someone is in real trouble. So the Major I was driving for gets on the net to report. In a few seconds the scenario is called for that evening. There actually IS a vehicle moving slowly across the desert floor, towards the Scout screen line with it's white headlights on. In response, EVERY vehicle out in the desert that night cranks up and switches on THEIR white lights (an entire battalion). Every Scout track, a few forward M1's and every Controller track heads off to intercept the incoming vehicle in order to render assistance.
Upon seeing so many lights come on - nearly simultaneously - all across the desert floor, and some beginning to close in on them, the incoming vehicle stopped moving. It took me a few minutes to get us over there. We were a couple miles away on the opposite side of the valley. Other vehicles arrived quicker. What a sight is was when we rolled up .... Sheridans, Brads & Abrams parked together, but all scattered around kinda crazy, lights on ... folks all milling around in the now dusty night air ... laughing ... and an elderly couple in a Winnebago. Yeah, they wandered on post from the north east boundary somewhere. Said they were looking for Death Valley.
They almost got the death part.

I sighted in a new Saint for my friend at 19 meters; that's all the distance we had at our local range. I made my adjustment and put 3 more down range and we were ready to put him behind the rifle and within a few shots he miraculously shot the bracket off the ceiling track and came crashing to the cement floor with a sound uncharacteristic for an indoor range. Range master shut that side down repaired the track and we left- good times. We promptly joined an outdoor range and faired much better.

Wild range story, I was finishing the last week of coaches course in Quantico. We were bird dogging coaches and PMI's at the pistol range. The marine on target point 24, some how managed to hit the top of the berm. Mind you the top of the berm is about 20-25 feet high. Allegedly this was not the first time the marine was on the pistol range. This feat repeated multiple times until a PMI (who was fresh from the drill field) came over and started to correct the marine. For those unaware, the PMI's wear campaign covers exactly like our drill instructors.

An old timer pulled up and got out of his car while I was testing my new upper I just built. He had no ppe. He told me that when I was a glisten in my daddy’s eye, he was in Grenada with a 10” barreled M14. It couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn because the barrel was too short.
He then said that my 14.5” (pinned & welded brake to meet 16”) faxon barreled ar15 upper couldn’t hit the target @50 yards.
He sat in a chair behind me and waited (no ppe 😂).
I shot the best dang dime sized group I was capable of @50 and showed it to him. He looked upset and just left. 😂 😂 😂

Craziest range story. A couple of years ago I had just bought my first handgun, a XD9 mod 2 subcompact don't hate, and was practicing some basic drills at my local indoor range when an older man came in with who I would assume his wife. After going over some safety stuff he handed her his LCP. She fired a couple of rounds and on I believe the third shot the slide with barrel decided that they wanted to be bullets too and flew off the gun and landed a couple of feet down the lane. Had to get the RO to come and retrieve the departed half of the gun and the owner remarked that he would be selling it asap. Needless to say I am never buying an LCP.

Craziest range story...well, again, nothing too crazy on my end. A friend from out of town was visiting and we both wanted to go to the range so he could show me some drills and such he'd learned. It was raining an unusual amount, though. Nothing real heavy, just a steady rain. We both decided to go on anyways because 1) real life situations will not have ideal conditions, and 2) it added a bit of an unexpected hitch! By the time we were done, we were both soaked to the bone but it was fun!

Three years late, but this reminded me... My first time out on the range, it was a rainy January day. I had just purchased my first rifle, the FN M16A4, and was waiting for background check to clear. Showed up to the range with my friend and his friends, with his new AK, a Mosin, and various other rifles and pistols. Another range goer had a Type 56 under folder with a Mosin as well. I was 22, it was January 2018, so it was very cold out in the Northwest. First time handling a rifle, and I banged the gong five times in a row with the Mosin, and half a mag with the AR of the friend. Ironically, the other guy was really flashing his Mosin and his Type 56, but at 220 yards, he couldn't hit jack shit, while I, an absolute first time shooter, impressed the hell out of the entire range.
      2018 was a great year.

Thanks for this review on a great intermediate range scope with world class durability. I use a Horus H59 reticle for competition in my Bushnell ERS 2.5 - 21 x 50 scope and that's why the NF 1 - 8 ATACR reticle is just fine with me. Doesn't feel "busy" at all. Use it and you will "learn it".
Also a reticle I use similar to the ATACR 1 - 8 is the G3 small "Xmas tree" reticle in my Bushnell LRTS 4.5 - 18 x 44 long range hunting scope. Like the ATACR reticle, it too is illuminated however every line and hash mark is lit perfectly.

Range Story: I was in an underground 100yd range (basically a big tube with concrete walls and ceiling). A dude comes down with a brand new Daniel Defense AR of some sort, loads it up, and starts banging away. I notice his rounds are impacting the ceiling and sparking, when something stings my cheek. Sure enough, a bullet fragment ricocheted back, hit me in the face, and drew some blood. At that point, both the RSO and I yelled for him to stop. We checked out his rifle and he had absolutely no sights on it what-so-ever. We asked him what he was aiming with and no shit his answer was, "The gun was so expensive I couldn't afford any. I figured I'd shoot it a bit and get a scope for next time..." RSO and I tried our best not to blow up on a newbie but directed him back to the shop to pic up some irons. I immediately left the range and haven't gone back there since. Also a huge fail on the RSO for not paying attention to the status of weapons on the range.

Did you know that .30-30 will chamber in a Miami Nagant? Neither did I. But my buddy and I were shooting my Mosin and his Marlin, and when it was his turn to shoot the Mosin, I handed him some ammo off the table. We obviously weren’t paying attention until he fired a shot he got flashed with some smoke and powder out of the action.
After we made sure he was okay (hooray for eye pro) we ejected the case and noticed it was bulged and the neck was ruptured. Looked at the case head and realized our mistake. The action was just a hair out of completely closed because the rim on .30-30 is a hair thicker than the rim on 54R. But fortunately the bullet is smaller and the cartridge lower pressure, so there was no kaboom.
He hit the target too, so that was kinda neat. We’d just put up a new shoot ‘n’ see.

I remember, when I was still in high school, a couple of my friends were over at my house shooting clay pigeons. We sadly only had that little stick that’s made to throw the pigeons. Well one of my friends is up so he grabs the Mossberg 500 from me and walks to the range. Well my Dad throws a couple good ones out into the field. He goes to throw the next one so my friend can shoot the pigeon but instead of it going forward and into the air it goes straight up. My friend doesn’t miss a beat and aims the shotgun right at the pigeon (and hits it). My Dad meanwhile noticed that he had done this and dived to the ground to avoid being shot.

Crazy range stories, gotta love ‘em!!
1994 Lima co. BLT 3/2, 26th MEU SOC, Spain live fire for all company saw gunners. My platoon commander (newly promoted 1st Lt. , Citadel military college educated was the RSO) tells me to get off the weapon. He promptly kneels behind gun, tips it up on bi-pods (barrel aprox 8” from ground) and rides the bolt home on a live round (STILL ATTACHED TO BELT OF SAID LIVE ROUNDS) and as expected BOOM into the ground it goes!!! I immediately back up from 15’ to about 40’
    BUT WAIT…. There’s more!!!
The jackwagon DOES IT AGAIN!!!! This time the barrel is 2” from the ground……. BOOM….. goes off again!!!
DUUUHHH!!!! He promptly put the weapon down got up turned to me and said “You know why I can do that? I’m the RSO!” And walked away!
The area we were was where Clint Eastwood filmed a few of his classic westerns. Desert, mountain very hard packed ground! Took me a couple of 200 round boxes of full auto awesomeness to finally relax the pucker factor caused by his idiocy!!!

We have a free range in the nearby national forest. The old guy who volunteers there will use one of those metal basket rollers to pick up your brass while you are shooting. As soon as you stop, he stops and starts asking you about your day, your rifle setup, etc. To try and distract you from what he was doing soI asked him what he was doing. He said he tries keep the range clean. I thanked him for picking it up for me and showed him the can I put my spent brass in. He stopped picking up my brass and moved on to the next guy.
