How to Remove a Metal Chimney and Repair the Roof

  • Our new, 40-year-old house had an old metal chimney that was once connected to an wood stove in the living room. The pipe stub that protruded through the ceiling was covered with a makeshift cardboard cap painted to match the walls. Having no interest in installing an inefficient, space-consuming stinky wood stove, Diane and I decided that the old chimney had to go. The contractor we had hired to do some remodeling work said he did not do roofing, and recommended Antique Roofing for this project. To reduce the cost, I was comfortable with repairing the hole in the ceiling myself after the chimney was removed and the roof repaired. In a second video, I will show you the process I used for patching the hole, applying heavy knockdown texture, and painting the repaired area matching the color of the surrounding ceiling paint. I hope that you find this video both entertaining and of some value for your chimney removal project.

Need a camera on the roof to get a view of what is actually being done.

Thank you for your comment! Yes, we’ve spent our initial budget to pay for essential and aesthetic improvements to meet our desires for our retirement home in Sequim Washington. But, we are now ready to launch home improvement projects that will take out retirement home to the next level!

Yes, its a clown move.there is no reason to do it this way other than laziness. About the most dangerous way you can use a saw. Doesn't matter how good this guy thinks he is. It only takes a single mistake..just one time out of a thousand. Really dumb.

getting a solar tube installed in my area costs $1500ish which is this same process in reverse, actually a bit easier even. I would estimate a $2000 labor bill. I highly doubt that building permits are required for removal, but definitely for the initial installation. Check with your city's building department - just call and ask!

DIY? Maybe $25-30. Hire a crew of 2 guys to work on it and make fun if how your house is built? Maybe $525-600. Then they sell that double wall stainless pipe and chimney cap on craigslist rather than give it to Habitat for Humanity.

@@jade8568_VR I see your curious on the price. I think it all depends on if your planning to do the job yourself or hire someone. Doing it yourself will be fairly cheap hiring someone will be a lot I would assume. I have been remodeling my has for the past couple years and do all my own work because I don't like being ripped off for basic jobs

I wonder if they could have just used the opening to install an attic vent or fan or even a solar tube light instead rather than having to close it up and re-shingle it like that?
