I remember playing GTA 2 and it was top-down. Back in those days it was surprising how you can zoom past building and traffic and pedestrians in a car so fast without lag or frame skipping. Rockstar has always been good at getting a lot of stuff on the screen without causing your system to overheat.

The reason for this was that we felt Grand Theft Auto IV was a high-definition experience and required different kinds of characters. That - and the fact that most people from the previous world are dead. - Rockstar Games when announcing GTA IV

Been playing since the top-down games and while Vice City is my nostalgic favorite (I'm a child of the 80's) the gameplay is ROUGH to go back to. Can't wait to revisit some locations in a year and a half (ish)
I had the same experience with San Andreas, played it over and over every system, including mods and online for years and loved every second of it. Went back to it a few years after IV came out, and the driving was way too rough to play for long, especially half the car being wrecked constantly from other traffic tapping the bumper at 2mph.
I can't wait to experience the mall in the new VC!! Was always fun to steal the car from there, visiting the stores inside too.
Also the hardware store was great, buy a hammer and smash a few gang members 😂

Yep, Vice City was my first GTA game, and being a child of the 80s and 90s, I definitely enjoyed the nostalgia, the music, the attire, the atomosphere and all that. But the game should remain in my memories, not to be replayed again. At the time it was great fun, but now, the controls just don't hold up to today.
Somethings should stay memories of the past, I believe.

the simple answer is: it does not. But there ARE several ties. For example, epsilonism exists in both universes. Also, in GTA V there is a book called Red Dead by J Marston. But that's just a little hommage.

Also another stretch but LD always mentioned how he’s got Native American Indian in his blood. And I always think how his lips look like Charles who is actually black and half Indian so 🤷🏾♂️ who knows man. Maybe they plan to connect them.

I actually hope to see Luis in GTA 6 he my second favorite character in GTA 4 behind Niko,and after seeing Johnny in GTA V. I hope that Luis doesn’t have the same fate happening to him in GTA 6 if he makes a return. He is a good character to me besides Victor Vance he’s the most decent character in GTA series. He doesn’t want to get involved in criminal organizations and he doesn’t want to get back in jail for crimes either. He just wants to make money and live a decent lifestyle but of course life in GTA doesn’t work out that way.
At this point Grand theft auto franchise is pop culture. The hype is unreal. After the trailer of gta 6 dropped, you can't escape the internet without seeing a topic related to gta, even people who do not gaming saw the topic.

Something worth mentioning is actual gameplay from San Andreas and Bully is featured in the HD Universe on TV, so we could push the theory that the past universes were really just movies / tv shows... also interesting is Manhunt's Carcer City is mentioned on the radio in 5, so that exists
Well, Michael himself mentions Carcer city in a conversation on our way to one of the heists, he says his first job was in the outskirts of carcer city.

in my eyes there are no separate universes they all have easter eggs from past games showing how they connect so in my eyes they all take place within a universe

More impoetant question: How does GTA connect with read dead universe?
I think after GTA 6 they will be done with the HD universe and start Phase 1 of a new universe. Think about it. GTA 4 came out in 2008, GTA 6 is coming out in 2025, people who were 18 years old when GTA 4 first came out will be 35 years old when GTA 6 comes out. And if they take another 10 years or so to make GTA 7, those people will be 45 years old. How likely that Rockstar will still try to cater to the 45 year olds and their nostalgia and expectations? I think it's far more likely that 6 will be the final installment of this chapter of GTA games, and 7 will be the brand new start from scratch.
GTA 7 will most likely be in Liberty City but a more photorealistic New York, maybe it could feature all of the sub cities and New Jersey

I don't know if they will do new universes after 6 tbh, the changes from 3D to HD were so big they probably felt like they needed to maintain consistency with the new capabilities. Geography of the old games cities is vastly different etc, that's not really a problem anymore.
If anything I just hope 7 if it happens is in Fierro or Venturas.

Well, you forgot GTA Advanced that is connected to 3D universe, and Chinatown Wars that's connected to HD universe. ... Especially sucks, because you did talk about London expansions.
And it's not confirmed that GTA 2 takes place in 1999. Because of this and that, that it takes "13 minutes in future", it could be set in some what retro-futuristic 2013. In a way, GTA 2 isn't connected to GTA 1 and London, even tho they in same Universe.
But i do have to give props that you didn't called Claude from GTA 3 as Claude Speed. A lot of people make that mistake, by giving GTA 3 Claude the same last name as the one from GTA 2.

i just wish they said, parallel universe, so the characters could exist like they do with MCU variants, I mean CJ literally appears on billboards in GTA IV and a whole bunch of references to characters from that game in GTA V, including OG Loc being mentioned in GTA Online The Contract. + Love Fist showing up in game..... and then there's El Burro who's in all the universes.

Carcer City already existed in 1984 as It's mentioned in Vice City Stories and GTA 2 takes place in either 1999 or 2013 in a different universe

I could never play any of the 2D era GTA games, as im not used to that weird top view control. I know R* would never bother making a 3D/HD remakes of those games so wish someone made complete modifications including missions of those games
I only played GTA 1 but a demo version never bought GTA 1 or 2 my first time playing GTA was Vice City and GTA 3

GTA has been a massive part of pop culture for decades. I think thats because it so successfully parodies american culture that it resonates with American culture. I think to say they "used" to parody implies that they'll stop lol.
2D Universe (1969 - 1999 ) = GTA 1 (1997), GTA London (1961), GTA London (1969), GTA 2 (unknown time, possibly 1999)
3D Universe (1984 - 2001) = GTA VCS (1984), GTA VC (1986), GTA SA (1992), GTA LCS (1998), GTA Advance (2000), GTA III (2001)
HD Universe (2008 - Present ) = GTA IV + TLAD + TBOGT (2008), GTA Chinatown (2009), GTA IV (2013), GTA Online (2013-present)

Yeah it's real cool how they do it. I'd love for them to make a San Andreas 2 or Bully 2 n bring back old characters to see how they fit into a new story line. Similar to how they did rdr2 ( even though it was technically a prologue)

You left out two very very Important games. Red Dead Redemption 1 & 2. Rockstar already said that they are in the same universe. & That Red Dead happens before GTA.

Isn’t the 3D universe separate from the HD university so technically cj never existed in the los santos from gta 5
