I eventually found a dealer over an hour away from my location that was willing to take a real look at my car. Turns out that the engine was actually chewing itself up (the notorious coyote "tick" is quite real....), resulting in severe pitting of the camshaft, metal in the cylinder heads, and much more. A repair was done under warranty, but the issue returned only a month later. Seeing as my car had been at a dealer for "repairs" for a cumulative total of 6 months, I decided to part ways with it. Once again, what should have been a simple process turned out to be a 2 month long ordeal. All Ford had to do was use a simple formula to determine the buy-back price (due to being in CA, and which they eventually did), but the lemon "rep" I was dealing with over the phone was an absolute dunce. Long story short, I took the $40+K I received for the buy-back, and purchased a low mileage 08 Z06 (which now has h/c/i) to pair with my '16 Z06. @@FrenchAmericanTravel Hey buddy, sorry to resurrect an old comment but I am considering buying a Mach 1 or a GT and I’m in California. What dealership was it so I can avoid them like the fucking plague lol
You didn't mention it, so you must've had the down-shift rev match setting turned off. I got to spend a couple days at Road Atlanta with the Mach 1 back in April, and I was thoroughly impressed with the accuracy of the auto rev-match, even when trying to fool it by going 5-3 downshift at turn 10A. It got the revs right every time. And yes, I agree: this is a wonderful mix of GT350 and Coyote goodness. And the fighter jet gray is an awesome color.
I have a regular GT, for the mt-82 I added a Blowfish support brace for the shifter, the Boomba racing transmission support and replaced the transmission oil with full synthetic. Those fixes do alot to mitigate the issues with the MT-82 and I spent a hell of a lot less for my Mustang. That and alot of Steeda suspension bits and its much better value proposition than a Mach 1 at around 40k including aftermarket wheels and tires included in that price.
I've owned 2 Mustang GTs with the MT82. The transmission itself isn't that bad. There's a huge misconception that the transmission is the main problem. The primary issue is the stock shift linkage, which is absolute garbage. The MGW kit replaces the entire linkage, and makes it feel 100x better.
Nice review. I will say, the MT82's issues were directly due to the clutch. In stock form it wasn't bad but when you started modifying the engine and tuning it, raising the rev limiter, the OEM clutch assemblies really did NOT like to disengage very well into the 7,000 rpm area. The fix for this is a Mcleod RST or Mantic twin disk, etc, the transmission itself worked well for me and held up great until I sold my coyote/mt82 car after about 80,000 miles. It still had the stock clutch too, in good working order except the intermittent 7k+ hard shifting issue. It was a 2013 GT brembo car with bolt-ons that dyno'd 430 rwhp. I autocrossed the fuck out of that car for two seasons, launched in 2nd and 3k+ rpm dumping the clutch on 315/30-18 BFG Rivals at least 150 times, did a little street racing, road trips, daily driver, the typical shit. But. The transmission was never an issue, it was the clutch at random times. This is a well known fact unless you got a lemon MT82 that slipped past QC from the factory and wasn't assembled correctly. There are MT82 cars running 10's both N/A and supercharged today. They tend to fail (break a gear itself) around the 750-850 rwhp area, and will obviously wear out the synchros before that from higher hp abuse over long periods of time if you do not address the clutch problem for drag racing or road course use. I wasn't doing consistent drag racing (at the strip) or road courses, so I never really had a need for a new clutch. But I did miss a hard 2-3 shift dozens of times because of this issue and the transmission was fine when I sold it. No undue noises & no particles when I changed the gear oil around 70k miles.
Yeah but when you pay that much for a car, you expect it to work from the box. That’s why I’m currently in a lemon law case for mine. I don’t understand how my BRZ had a better transmission than my GT.
Well I have a friend with a 2019 gt that managed to break 3rd gear 2 times now with just bolt ons. Granted he drives his car hard but still. I was cross shopping with the camaro ss and might have gotten the mustang if the transmission was better. I ended up picking up a 2018 Camaro 2SS which I have now but it would definitely be a harder choice now.
My 13 gt mt82 feels great still. I only have exhaust but I take it to the drag strip and it's gave me no issues knock on wood. 62k miles and going strong
The MT-82 has great gear ratios, GETRAG makes great transmissions. I’ve had 2 mustang GTs the factory shifter and pressure plate are the the flaming piles of shit.
I have a 13 boss with an MGW short throw. I have to double clutch my 1-2 above 6500, but the MT82 is mostly fine otherwise. Never had an issue going 2-3 or 3-4. Once my current clutch goes though I’ll go RST. I don’t really mind how prickly the trans is cuz it encourages very precise shifts- when I get in my friends’ manual cars i can shift them very smoothly at any rpm. MT82 ratios are also perfect for street driving. It’s shitty, but not that shitty IMO
So frustrating that Ford doesn't have the Tremec manual transmission standard on the normal GT. The Mach 1 is expensive ($65k) if all you want is a good manual. Great job on this review
A stock MT-82 has been shown to consistently hold more power than a Tremec TR-3160. It's not a T56XL and they break as well in high HP applications. The MT82 gets a lot of hate but it's beaten to death in 800hp cars that no manual trans is going to hold forever.
I'd have to agree about the Voodoo engine, it ended up as an engineering mistake because ford wanted the gt350 to still sound like a muscle car so they gave the Voodoo engine an unconventional flat-plane crank, which caused excessive vibrations which killed the crank-mounted oil pump due to harmonics. If you look at almost every flat-plane crank the crank pins are up-down-down-up, but in the Voodoo engine it's up-down-up-down. It's a shame and a waste of a good engine.. maybe someone down the line will correct this issue eventually but I doubt it, because it would require a custom crank and 4 custom cams lol.
@@ahemgee9542 it's the only thing that makes sense considering that no one recommends spinning a Voodoo past 9,000 rpm when the regular coyote can push 10,000+ rpm, and the fact that they blow oil pumps and vibrate the filter loose oil filters, and most state a balancer on ANY Voodoo setup is a must. Unfortunately it also means the Voodoo is permanently crippled unless you swap to a coyote crank and cams.. now you know why it's the "Voodoo", because it took some serious Voodoo to make it work lol
@@Drake5153 Nice to finally come across someone else that understands why Vooblew is a mess. Non-conventional FPC is the culprit for the secondary vibration issues you mentioned above. Look at the Ford FPC crank (up-dn-up-dn) compared to conventional (up-dn-dn-up) FPC and you will notice the Ford FPC has two large counterweights at each end of the crank to try and mitigate excessive secondary vibrations from non-conventional FPC. Nice in theory but failed in application. The up coming C8 Z06 FPC uses conventional (up-dn-dn-up) FPC and will not have the issue Ford did.
I’m literally drooling over this car! I told myself that I was going to research other cars idk a older vette? A challenger ,charger a stinger, but this thing is a wicked machine and it’s unique so many people have a GT . Shelby/cobra/GT 350 it just looks a lot more aggressive than the GT. Can’t wait to test drive one!
I own a slightly modified 2012 GT 6sp and have never had 2nd or 3rd lock up or other shifting issue with the MT82. The problem is people shift it like they stole it and aren't very good drivers. I do shift a bit lower than redline, 5500-6000 RPM. While I acknowledge the Tremec in the GT 350 is better , we are also talking 8 to10 years later. Ford has done a great job improving each new version of the mustang. For the money the GT is hard to beat!
11:39 you’re absolutely right. I’ve owned / daily drove a 2018 PP2 and owned / daily drove a 2019 GT350 and the PP2 was a better car around town. I get a ton of crap for saying that mostly by people who haven’t driven both let alone owned them. The down low torque of the coyote is much more suited to street driving. You can feel in the GT350 that it always wants to stretch its legs and be on a big track. With the Tremec and coolers, this thing is great for what it is. I just wish it was about $5-$7k less.

People call this car a budget Shelby or a parts bin special as an insult but I think it's a positive in some aspects. It's cheap enough (relatively speaking) that you can daily drive it while getting the best that Ford has to offer. The reliability and modability of the 5.0 while having the handling of the Cobra. It's not the best at anything but gives the average a taste of the top performance cars
The mach 1 is certainly the highest performing stang on the coyote platform. But as a replacement to the voodoo platform, there can be none. In fact, the gt350 and gt350r was and still is my favorite mustang ever made; they’re my favorite car in the sub $100k range and perhaps even sub $150k. Sure, it has its issues, but what high strung motor don’t? I hope they bring the voodoo back sometime in the future. Rip 5.2L Voodoo V8 NA Flat Plane Crank: 2015-2020, you will be missed
Better. All variants of the camaro handle great because the alpha platform is so solid. Once you go 1le; the mag ride tuning, lower CoG due to the lt1 being a pushrod and lower, and also more rigid chasis all add to make the 1le great. Current gen mustang owner here, and I assure you the mustang is a better daily driver but the camaro is a better canyon carver.
@@jmm1174 I never said the platform was bad. Despite it's age it's still the muscle car platform for track duties. Just GM really screwed up the looks of the car lately

I love the smoking tire reviews. I'm with you on the seats, feels like your on a bar stool. I have a 2013 Boss Laguna-Seca, and I thought this might be the potential replacement but the second I sat in it... decision made; the Boss has a great seating position. I know the Boss isn't ever going to be a match to an independent suspension Mach1 but that Boss puts a smile on my face every time I get in it, and it keeps you on your toes which in my opinion adds to the excitement. I think I'll add a Tremec and a few misc. upgrades and keep it until the end of time. I like your review on the 2013 Yellow Boss with the coil overs and Cobra Jet set-up. That car is a beast.
Seems like an amazing car. A little surprised at how slow the numbers are ( 0-60 and 1/4 mile) but I'm sure weight has a lot to do with it. Add a supercharger or twin turbos and it wouldn't be an issue anymore.
Recaro's in mustangs are rough on the back. Spent a lot of time in the development GT500's with Recaro's, had to sit with a 3" binder on the seat to give me some lumbar support. Otherwise I couldn't walk after a long drive lol
I literally adjust my seat every day in my 2015 mustang Ecoboost premium. They haven’t improved the seat design since the first model year… even with the recaro’s. The problem is the seats sit high compared to the console and wheel and there isn’t enough thigh room with the wheel properly adjusted (and I’m only 6 1” 180lbs). I’m going to end up getting sparco’s so I don’t have to fiddle with my seat adjustments constantly.
An excellent, honest review. Seats defiantly need to be addressed. The car still has the low quality appearance and feel when sitting behind the wheel. Passed on purchasing the GT350 due to a friends blowing up in 300 miles and Ford begging him to to keep the car, extending the warranty 5 more years, and, Ford techs who did the engine replacement, did a sloppy job, scratched badly in the engine compartment, front bumper cover and broke the front splitter. Sold my 95 Cobra after owning 24yrs and wanting to upgrade the Ford in my collection. Replaced the Cobra with a BMW.
I had both Mach 1 with performance pack and without it. Agree the one with it tremlines like crazy did not have that problem at all on the standard version. So for a daily driver (that of course can be track'ed) I would go with the stock Mach 1.
I like Steve McQueen and the Bullitt Mustang while being a could of decades under that age. I would be fine with the Bullitt Mustang being a color and trim package that is mechanically the same as the Mach 1 though.

This is the normal life cycle of any car model on the road. The cycle lasts 5 to 7 years with a mid cycle refresh about 3 years in. That's nothing new.
I really like the Mach 1 and looked for one in my area but didn't see any with the right options, so... I went GT500. A week and a half ago. Am I happy? Yup. However, I think the Mach 1 shouldn't exist given that it fixes most if not all of the not so great stuff about the GT. Regular full optioned Mustang GTs should already have most of this hardware, and if they do a Mach 1, it should have *more*, like perhaps an extra 50 naturally aspirated horsepower or something, and maybe other goodies that I can't think of at the moment.

Nailed it
The clutch is the problem. Stock shifter not great either, but the clutch lockout at high rpm is when causes missed/grinding shifts

Great review - just got my Mach 1 and the Tremec is a joy to shift. I agree the clutch travel is a bit long.
Pretty good car, but a bit overpriced by 5-8k. Camaro 2SS 1LE is 8k less then Mach 1 with the handling package.
Matt loved the Fiesta ST, I bought it. Matt loves the Mach 1, I bought it.
Likely going to be the standard manual transmission on the next gen
What’s a t56 cost? Could someone or swap it into their GT / PP2 f
They’re too expensive. Ford usually tries to keep cost low to keep it the #1 american muscle/pony car seller.
A stock MT-82 has been shown to consistently hold more power than a Tremec TR-3160. It's not a T56XL and they break as well in high HP applications. The MT82 gets a lot of hate but it's beaten to death in 800hp cars that no manual trans is going to hold forever.

Great video, in the UK models we have lumbar adjustment and independent suspension setting. You can go into a customise feature to do it
I'd have to agree about the Voodoo engine, it ended up as an engineering mistake because ford wanted the gt350 to still sound like a muscle car so they gave the Voodoo engine an unconventional flat-plane crank, which caused excessive vibrations which killed the crank-mounted oil pump due to harmonics.
Interesting to know re the crank

I do shift a bit lower than redline, 5500-6000 RPM. While I acknowledge the Tremec in the GT 350 is better , we are also talking 8 to10 years later. So is this essentially a gt350 but without that one off motor they put in it?
The mach 1 is certainly the highest performing stang on the coyote platform. But as a replacement to the voodoo platform, there can be none. In fact, the gt350 and gt350r was and still is my favorite mustang ever made; they’re my favorite car in the sub $100k range and perhaps even sub $150k. How does the Mach1 handling performance compares to the Camaro SS1LE?
I think the 1LE still has the advantage on the track. This closes the gap. But the New SS's look like @$$

Matt: How is this as a daily driver, I have no interest in track use.
