- Tabernacle Organist, Richard Elliott, performs an eerie rendition of Johann Sebastian Bach's "Toccata in D Minor" with the Salt Lake Tabernacle pipe organ, the Tabernacle Organ has 11,623 pipes. "Toccata" is often played in the full extent as "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor." This piece is one of the most famous works in organ repertoire.
The piece is recognizable to most and has been featured in many films, including: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931), The Black Cat (1934), Disney's Fantasia (1940), Sunset Boulevard (1950), 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), The Phantom of the Opera (1962), and The Great Race (1965).

Well played.

Toccata love a good pun here and there.
I wonder how many of d minors were watching this?
Well, if you really want to, you can just keep going Bach to the beginning and listening to it again
Their is absolutely NOTHING like hearing a pipe organ if this size. Opened up FULLY especially at the end. I sung in many elite choirs with my mom god rest her soul as she passed away from pancreatic cancer 2yrs ago. But the time we had together i know that this instrument and the french horn which she played for a while. Were her two favorite instruments. This is also one of my favorite pieces to hear on a pipe organ. And it was played to perfection...!!! Still gives me goosebumps every time i hear it.
This striking piece of music, played on a church organ is one of the best sounds that I’ve ever heard 🎹🎹🎼 🥰
If I die ,I want this played at my funeral.
Me too
Me too, this will be my funeral song
The great Richard Elliot playing one of the greatest compositions ever written....
But... it needs the Fugue...
Wyatt Watts I wish he played the rest too, but still enjoyed what it was.
I met him at the Tabernacle once. :D
:)
Wyatt Watts as
0:01: The thunder cracking and rumbling and the "vampire's" entrance is one of the spookiest scenes I had ever seen.
This easily proves why Rick Elliot is considered as one of the greatest living organists. Bravo!
I love this it can show that Halloween can still be fun and not crazy scary.
Well, I will now expect to see more lighting effects and such at Conference here on out.
I love it! Sometimes we get so caught up with what is proper and what is not in life that we forget that it is okay to let our hair down and just have some fun. I never would have thought that the mighty Tabernacle would be turned into a haunted music hall complete with fog machines, spooky lights and lightning. Dr. Elliott played the piece to perfection. Thanks for doing this it made my day.
Disclaimer: No actual lightning bolts were used in the making of this video.
The spooky lighting and decor in the Tabernacle is simply epic. They really went all out on this. Well done.
I want to learn the organ just to play this! Awesome!
Me too, because I love this music played by organ
He is an unbelievable talent--out of this world.
Terrific playing, that put us right in the mood for Halloween.
Don't be so dramatic!
Me:
Plays it like it's no big deal. Awesome!
With a AVERAGE of eight hours a day in practice for things like this... It IS no big deal to him... AND he does it BY MEMORY...
Watching this has become a Halloween tradition!
Visually fantastic, and played very well! I do wish he played the whole thing though. Still, crazy to see the tabernacle decked out like that.
I HAVE TO PLAY THIS ORGAN!!!!!!! On my way to Salt Lake!!!!
Utterly fantabulous, heavenly, divine, uplifting, breathtaking organ rendition of this magnificent masterpiece. I love ❤️ it
Bravo! You made my Halloween.
For Richard Elliot being older and wiser, this is awesome that his hands can still do that! I know this was a few years ago but still amazing!!!
Amazing, the talent you have to have to play an organ like that. Love this.
Beautiful! Now the Phantom of the Opera Overture, please.
Simply superb: thank you, Mr. Elliott.
Absolutely breathtaking 🙌🏼
Virtuoso organ performance played from memory. Privileged to have visited the E.M. Skinner organ at the Tabernacle. Thankful Maestro Elliot shares some of his musicianship on UA-cam.
Love his solos. Amazing
ABSOLUTELY beautiful, and perfect background
What a talented man is Mr, Richard Elliott!
I love how they managed to make this both haunting and spooky without it being profane or irreverent. It's a song that you easily associate with Halloween or villainy, but it is still appropriate for a hallowed hall. The imagery is very much suited to Halloween, but there is no reference to devilry or witchery or anything like that. In all, it's a presentation that captures the spirit of Halloween that Christ would still be comfortable having in one of his houses of worship.
I couldn't disagree more.
Remember, JS Bach was a devout Christian and wrote music to glorify God. The common man may think of Halloween whenever they hear the into to this song but that does not diminish from the greatness of most all his works.
But did Bach actually write this piece? Its been up to debate for years.
This is amazing.
Best rendition ever. Setting is phenomenal too.
Sends chills and goosebumps all over my body hearing this masterpiece. Very nice.
Such a fun video of a marvelous organist - thank you for sharing!
WOW! (insert every positive explective ever) Just watching it being played and the speed and nimbleness of Elliot's fingers is amazing! Glorious piece, on a glorious instrument, by a truly extraordinary musician!
Richard Elliott is definitely a master!!!🎹🎃
Perfection!!!
Would love to see a performance of the entire piece by Richard Elliott on that organ in that building. The acoustics of that building are unparalleled. The organ is incredible too.

Great tune
Respect ! Beautiful .Thank you very much ..
Thank you Dr. Watts for your beautiful, thrilling gift. Rarely does one find the D. Minor so magnificently presented by an artist (who has it memorized I might add) and so professionally performed on one of Americas most exceptional organs that is known and loved by millions I am sure. I found your professional attire most excellent and appropriate. Thank you and Blessings. David Snyder, Lumierist ,Creator of Virgil Fox Heavy Organ Touring Production.
Thank you Rick, and the lighting, props, and video crews for a very fun and 'spooky' rendition of this gem!

You sir are getting a thumbs up, and a new sub!!! You deserve it! Amazing work, BRAVO!!
This is something that I remembering praying back in 2013ish to heavenly father to have happen. Ask and ye shalt receive. Thank you Heavenly Father! :D
I have seen him in a many a tuxedo but the white tie and tails just pulled it OFF!! He approached that bench like " Excuse me, but I have some SERIOUS spookiness to give you. Watch..."
Absolutely beautiful!
This is not evil music. It is the holiness of the lord almighty.
The most sinister-sounding organ piece I know of is the toccata from Leon Boellmann's "Suite Gothique" (find Olivier Latry's version recorded at Notre Dame and turn up your bass!). We think of 'gothic' as referring to spooky, creepy stuff, but the Gothic Suite is indeed dedicated to the idea that the tip of the Gothic Arch points to God. Nevertheless, that piece, I think, blasts this out of the water for creepiness!
Perfect 🙏🏻😇
hes good and the fog is cool nice work
ive heard this so much its hard to think of it as spooky but just as classical
I clicked on it, thinking "Which classical piece even IS the Tocatta in D Minor? It looks scary, and the effects on the Tabernacle Hall are cool. But which piece is it?!" First couple notes, and I recognized the classic Halloween trill. Loved it! Richard Elliot, you inspire me.
Das ist perfect!!!!
This is great!!! :D
