    The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square perform "Battle Hymn of the Republic" composed by William Steffe with lyrics by Julia Ward Howe and arranged by Peter J. Wilhousky.
    Lyrics:
    Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord;
    He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
    He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
    His truth is marching on.
    Gloria! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Gloria! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Gloria! Gloria! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Gloria!
    His truth is marching on!
    I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps;
    (Truth is marching, truth is marching, truth is marching)
    They have builded Him an alter in the evening dews and damps;
    (Truth is marching, truth is marching, truth is marching)
    I can read His righteous sentence in the dim and flaring lamps,
    (Truth is marching, truth is marching, truth is marching)
    His day is marching on!
    (Truth is marching, truth is marching, truth is marching)
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on.
    In the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea,
    With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
    As He died to make men holy, Let us live to make men free,
    While God is marching on.
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
    Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on!
    Amen! Amen!

    At 81, I am the youngest of the 5 Miller brothers who proudly served Our Country for the freedom many people today take for granted. This video always brings tears to my eyes as they run down my cheeks. It won’t be long before I stand in front of Our Savior, as many singing this song have gone before me.

    As an atheist living in the United Kingdom, I salute the astounding brilliance of this choir of Christian persons. The voice control, the precision of the ensemble (very difficult with a choir as big as this) the intonation, to say nothing of the incredible audibility of the diction! every word and syllable beautifully pronounced, and moreover the commitment of this famous choir to the music they are singing..... either to the Lord or, in this case, their country. Thank you for posting this wonderful musical experience.

      In my senior year of high school (very early 00’s), in senior choir, all the senior choirs from my state [district maybe?] got together in a stadium and sang this, along with some other really beautiful patriotic songs. It was the end of the senior year and our high school careers, so I dunno why but, I was so touched and feeling sentimental. When we sang this, I wept. Hearing it now, I weep. His truth will forever be marching on. Nobody feels this way anymore in our country and my heart and soul break because of it.
      I have a cd of that entire performance somewhere. I’m gonna go through my things and find it! Thanks for inspiring me! ❤️

    A true story! I was doing the all-night shift on KNAK, a Top 40 radio station in Salt Lake back in 1971. I played the "Battle Hymn" as an 'oldie'(#11 pop hit in 1959). I found out the next day that my station was the only one that had not been knocked off the air by a lightening storm during the night. Certainly got my attention!

      The original lyric was about the abolitionist named John Brown:
      John Brown's body lies a-mouldering in the grave,
      His soul's marching on.
      And,-
      He's gone to be a soldier in the army of the Lord,
      His soul's marching on.
      According to an 1890 account, the original John Brown lyrics were a collective effort by a group of Union soldiers who were referring both to the famous John Brown and also, humorously, to a Sergeant John Brown of their own battalion.

      I so agree I feel emotional while listening to Mormon songs. Like when I made this cover for a friend of mine at the local Mormon Church in my town Trollhättan Sweden. I had a lot of questions and hesitated a lot before I made this cover. But while I was learning the lyrics I got all the answers I needed and converted to Mormon in 2014. I hope I made the song justice.

    When I was 11 my primary school took part in a combined schools concert at Portsmouth (UK) guildhall. This was the last song we sang. When we had finished, to a rousing ovation, our conductor turned to the audience and said "you lot can do what you like, but we're going to sing that again", No-one left. It is still one of the best moments of my 58 years. Wish I still had my tambourine!

    I never get tired of hearing this song no matter who sings it. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the 'Mormons') are an extremely patriotic people and that love of America comes out in this song. We believe that America is "a land blessed above all other lands". We believe that what makes America so special is that it is THE place where God restored, or brought back, His true religion and priesthood authority in these last days before Christ comes again. Once America had the restored gospel of Jesus Christ we had the responsibility to share this gospel, the "good news" of Jesus and all its blessings, with all the world. THIS is what has made America a blessed land for over 200 years. When I see the condition of my country today I fear greatly because I know we have sinned against God and perverted his gift of America. In the end, though, the righteous will triumph with God as our salvation. To everyone out there who loves America, no matter what your religion, I applaud you and hope we will work together.

      Robb Rogers Moses died a natural death before the Israelites crossed over to the promised land. But, he did appear on the Mount of Transfiguration. Enoch and Elijah were the only ones documented in the Bible who were taken up to heaven without having to die an earthly death. Catholic tradition holds that Jesus' mother, Mary, also ascended to heaven without having to die an earthly death. I remember asking a Catholic friend about it and she told me she thought it was in the Bible. It's not. But it could be true. So much history was never recorded in writing, but a lot was passed down by word of mouth. So, who knows?
      The Mount of Transfiguration story is at the beginning of Matthew 17, where Jesus took 3 of His disciples and let them see Him, Moses, and Elijah in their transfigured bodies. Another word for transfigured is glorified. This is all very mysterious and there are countless opinions about ascensions into heaven (or the sky or outer space, depending on the original language's meaning of the word, heaven).
      From what I gather, Elijah and Moses came back to earth in transfigured bodies and had a little meeting with Jesus (whose body was also temporarily transfigured during this meeting). My personal opinion is Jesus wanted to give 3 of his key disciples a glimpse of bodily transfiguration so He allowed them to see this for a little while to give them an idea of what our glorified bodies would be like in heaven.
      I totally understand why the idea of being transfigured is awesome, even though I don't understand it. As new creatures in Christ, we are transfigured. The transfigured body is going to have to wait though. =( The word can have more than one meaning. The lyricist was a well educated and talented woman. I like her use of the word.
      The Battle Hymn of the Republic has quite the history. The lyricist's original words were "let us die to make men free." It was changed by some over the years from "die" to "live" and is commonly printed and sung both ways. I like to think we can negotiate peace and freedom without killing each other, so that is why my preferred phrase is "Let us live to make men free." "Let us die to make men free" is also honorable and it reflects what Jesus did for our freedom from eternal sin and death.

      Robb Rogers You're welcome. I did not know that about Cecil B Demille's mother. Since there is no Old Testament account of Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration, could you be thinking of Moses going up on the mountain to receive the 10 Commandments? I don't think he was transfigured, but because God let him look at the back of Him as He passed by, Moses' hair turned white, his countenance glowed, and the Israelites saw this when he came back down the mountain (if memory serves me right).

    • @creativeplanetjanet
      @creativeplanetjanet 9 років тому

      Robb Rogers It's difficult to have a discussion within UA-cam comments, but yes, I do agree Moses appeared in a transfigured body many years after his death on the Mount of Transfiguration with Elijah and Jesus (New Testament). I don't think he had a transfigured body when he came down from Mt. Sinai though (Old Testament). But, since he was up there for 40 days and 40 nights, he may have had a temporarily transfigured body. I don't know, just my thoughts. Wouldn't it be great if we could be in a real class discussion about this - with a professor who has a doctorate degree in theology, along with our Bibles and concordances?!

    • @creativeplanetjanet
      @creativeplanetjanet 9 років тому

      Robb Rogers Hi Robb! Moses walked up a stairway to Heaven? Do you happen to know where this is recorded? It's just that I've never heard or read that. I just remember that God punished Moses by not allowing him to cross over to the Promised Land. The reason was because he disobeyed God by the way he struck the rock and made water come forth. I'm pretty sure God told Moses that he had to die an earthly death. I don't have the time right now, but maybe later this evening I will see what I can find about the death of Moses.

    Although I am not Mormon I am Southern Baptist this is absolutely awesome... I have many Mormon friends I made over the 13 years I worked for a company based out of Layton Utah... While out there for 3 months on a work assignment my wife came out to visit. We just happen to be Down town Salt Lake City site seeing on Sunday when they were just letting Church out.. There were a few very friendly people, and I will talk to anyone so I started talking and next thing I knew they invited us in to watch the Choir practice. So we took them up and went in. I was blown away by the size of the Choir, and there was a lady explaining to us about the acoustics inside and how it was designed. They also gave us a CD of there Choir and it was really good. Great Post......................

    There are many powerful words in this. Things like this need to be taught in all schools, especially PUBLIC SCHOOLS. Our great Nations history needs to be learned by all children so they know what our nation represents. Freedom is only one generation away from being lost. Our next generation and generations to come need to understand the significance. I think we are all learning a good lesson of that right now. God bless America! "His truth is marching on!"
