- The Orchestra at Temple Square performs "The Theme from Magnificent Seven" (Magnificent Seven) by Elmer Bernstein, during the 2015 Pioneer Day concert.
2015 Pioneer Day Concert.
Elmer Bernstein wrote the "Most Well Known Film Score" in Movie History. Billions of People Have Heard It. It has been 58 years. It is Still The Best! I was five years old when it was released in 1960. There Has Never Been Anything Before- Or Since -To Take It's Place In My Heart. It Is So Awesome! Absolutely Incomparable. Wonderfully and Utterly Pure Genius! The Greatest Western Film Of ALL TIME.
Watching the musicians and seeing how all the parts came together to create this masterpiece was amazing . My favorite movie theme song of all time just got better . Thank you for posting .
God Bless Yul Bruner, Charles Bronson, Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughn, James Coburn, Eli Wallach and Horst Buchholz. Seven heros of the greatest western ever.
Movies and soundtracks like this are long gone.new movies have no soul.soundtracks like this ignite feeling inside your soul.long live the classics.may we enjoy these forever...
Westerns of this time had great themes and great scenery.
This group of the most talanted musicians are outstanding my words cant enough about this orchestra. BEAUTIFUL SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL 🎉😊❤❤❤
Words cannot express how amazing this is leaves you breathless.
What a stunning piece of music ! Performed flawlessly by this amazing group of musicians. Goosebumps
So authentic to the American West that they had to shake the trail dust out of the sheet music to perform it. Wonderful!
Awesome comment!!!
I've never commented here but this has got to be my 50th time looking at this orchestra playing the best western ever. The firt time i went to a movie, this was the movie at the Lindell show on Grand ave. in St Louis Missouri in 1960, i was ten years old. I believe my neighbor took her children (my friends), and she ask my mother could i go. My mother said yes and told me i needed some money, she gave me $1.00. That dollar got me in the movie and it also got me a box of popcorn and a piece of candy. I love this tune, this is the first tune to introduce me to an orchestra. I found this because i was looking for an orchestra playing the "theme from a summer place" by Percy Faith.
Beautiful music for one of my favorite westerns ever made I saw this gift of a gem with my father at the State theatre in Bay City, Tx in 1960 back when going 2 a movie was a treat at 40 cents a box of popcorn set u back 15 cents and a large rootbeer 20 cents those days r gone 4ever that same yr me my parents we saw physco and in 62 at the same theatre my father and I went and saw another Hollywood gem with Gregory Peck and Anthony Quinn, The Guns of Navarone thank u God JEHOVA 4 those precious memories I will carry 2 the grave.
The BEST "western" movie score ever written.
I agree, it is a very stirring piece of music !
ABSOLUTELY RIGHT 👍👍👍....
Totally agree! My favorite western of all time! Love Yul Brynner!
For one of the best movies of all time!
Arguably the best film score ever written, western or otherwise.
One of the greatest theme songs of all time. I wish we had played it when I was in the band in High School.
Great film , Great actors , Great music . Perfectly performed here .
Even when I'm listening, I'm dancing to the mystery of this orchestra.
Definitely in the top five movie themes.
I was driving across Wyoming about 14 years ago. Came across a great area near Buffalo Bill Reservoir. I had this song on the The Magnificent Seven soundtrack so I plugged it into my car's CD player and cranked it up. Wonderful feeling of the wild open west in both scenery and sound.
Nice Experience
A perfect drive
Thanks !!! Amazing
Have to agree with previous comments. One of the best scores ever written along with The Big Country .Grew up loving both.
Best Western EVER. Plot and Music fit together perfectly. Appreciate that all movements and variations were included and not just the main theme. Elmer Bernstein comes close with the music in the John Wayne film 'The Commancheros' but this is the bar!
Probably one of the greatest themes of all time and a great film 😊
Remember seeing this great film when I was 10 (55 years ago) and loved every second of it , still do .The soundtrack has always been my favourite ..
Right with you on that - same age for me and quality of film & soundtrack continues as masterpieces.
me too. gives me the chills
Exactly my age when I saw it at the theater. It knocked me over!
My friends and I went on a Saturday and sat through three showings! 😆
Me too, at the drive-in in Grand Junction Colorado in the old 57 Ford station wagon. I was 10, too.
Outstanding!!!!
awesome
Thank you so much our American cousins, tears flowed, magnificent performance. Terry Bird, Stroud, Gloucestershire, England.
Funny how borders disappear with great music. Spectacular.
Man, don't this theme make you wanna saddle up and ride!
So beautiful. Reminds me of my Friend Tibor Zelig. He passed in 2015.
The coolest western ever made - it was the dialogue and the cast which made it so good even the bad guys had great lines. This superb theme was the icing on the cake.
"Only the farmers won. We lost. We always lose."
¡Bravo, bravo! Emotiva y cautivadora, esta música es grandiosa y tiene la emotiva capacidad de trasladarme al espacio infinito. Una pradera,
un caballo a su libre albedrío y mis juveniles años cabalgando a lomos de la libertad
ive tears rolling down my face
This is mind blowing. What a performance and what a Masterful composition! Thanks for sharing.
Gloriously Epic!
Great music
Wonderful
what an amazing soundtrack to an amazing film!!the remake will never match the 1960s version with yul brynner, steve mcqueen, charles bronson.james coburn!etc
chris rayner don't make films like that anymore
I totally agree with you, chris!!
chris rayner can you give me some links about that? :)
and Robert Vaughn !
When Sergio Leone was casting his “Spaghetti Western”, A Fistful of Dollars ... he wanted James Coburn.
Unfortunately Coburn, coming off two great films: The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape - was too expensive.
So, a recent TV star from Rawhide, Clint Eastwood was proposed. Fortunately for Leone, Clint Eastwood brought his own wardrobe to Italy & Spain for the film. The ‘Man with No Name’ was in Leone’s Trilogy.
For the music he turned to his childhood classmate and friend, Ennio Morricone (now 92).
Love this
i feel strange like a happy feeling
This is what a TEAM is! Scores of people, each doing something individually that results
in something awesome as a whole :)
Beautiful.
Great music from a great film one of the best.
This post may be more beautiful than the thing it's describing.
Congrats.
I think of this piece as we drive across the plains twice a year. Beautiful in spring and in summer.
+ Truth can't be silenced......I was thinking of how I could word my praise of this post......I'm afraid you summed it up more eloquently than I could have done....Gongrats indeed! The music is beautiful, but as you said, so is the post!
The producers told Bernstein that they needed a score that softened the passive effect of men just riding around on horseback. Bernstein gave us this quick-paced masterpiece and this arrangement, played by one the absolutely great orchestras in the world is deep, rich and has some bottom depth. Thanks for this vid. Indeed, this piece is breathless.
Magnificent. Probably the best western movie theme ever.
The Good, the Bad and The Ugly is 2nd !
Then I have to through Silverado in there.
I would watch the movie, just for the music... well done guys.
Love Eli Wallach , this music played when the “bad “ came riding into the village- McQueen, Bronson , Coburn 👍Ok
There are no words to express how i feel looking at the conductor and the orchestra pull this all together.
Magnificent
This brought tears to my eyes! And, when it was over, I stood up and applauded.
The best symphony ever to that song😀
Saw THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN in 1960 at a movie theater in Milwaukee as the second feature with John Wayne's HORSESOLDIERS with my brothers. Couldn't wait to come back to tell our parents about this movie and the wonderful music. A year later it was used to sell cigarettes - what a shame. Few films produced since then have had such a following. Since Hollywood exists to make money, why don't the film producers who join great scores with great stories? Think what could be done if they stopped filming car chases and exploding helicopters and concentrated on stories that inspire the public to be the best and add music like this to their work.
10 out of 10 Magnificent performance
Que. buen tema y que buena pelicula
Saddle up men,
We're burning daylight!
As magnificent as the film ✨
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING PERFORMANCE OF THIS BEAUTIFUL MUSIC, ONE OF THE GREATEST WESTERN THEMES.
I get goosebumps and tears come to my eyes and I relish in the aural delight, why? Why do I cry? Is it the memory of my lost youth? Is it the memory of my mother taking me to the cinema to see this in 1961/62? Whatever is is, I get the most beautiful feeling inside as I absorb this masterpiece into every fibre of my being.
Memories of my parents taking me to see this too with my brother and sister !
This performance leaves me breathless.
Manny Boy
Manny Boy
me too!! my dream is to become a professional violinist and to be in one of those huge orchestras!!.
Manny Boy well said I agree 300percent
It was the theme for the Magnificent Seven several years before it was made into a Marlboro commercial.
This is the finest performance of this song ever! The timing, harmonics and notes are absolutely perfect and beautiful! There are few performances that I wish I could have experienced in person and this is at the top of that one-in-a-lifetime list. Superb performance!!!!!!
This definitely goes into my bucketlist- to see the Mormon Orchestra next time I visit Salt Lake City
Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen
James Cobun, Charles Bronson.. Wonderful 🎶
fantastic. need I say more? they don"t make em like this anymore!
The greatest Western movie soundtrack of all time
After A COPELAND Like Introduction , Bernstein Swiftly Establishes HIS OWN Voice With THE GREATEST WESTERN THEME OF ALL TIME !!! Let's Face IT !! IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO SOUND MORE WESTERN THAN THIS !! Yippie Yo Hi Yeh !!! GO WEST YOUNG MAN !!!.....
The sound track for all of us underachievers, who know deep down that we will have our day.
Funny thing, I hear this music and can smell the horse sweat, leather and cattle and the open frontier.
I went to the concert,today
Great music to a great film.
Yul Brynner, Eli Wallach, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, James Coburn & Horst Buchhotz.
Seems like a life time ago.....those were the days my friend.
This theme is the *one* thing The Magnificent Seven undeniably has on Seven Samurai (whose score ain't shabby itself).
Nice one
BRAVO!!! BRASIL!!!
This kind of music fills my soul.
know what you mean
Amen
I agree with you! Totally!
In 1971 I was transferred to the USS Henry B. Wilson, DDG-7. Can anyone guess the nickname our ship had? We were commissioned in 1960! Whenever we did anything really cool this was the music we played on the 1MC. 49 years later I still love this music. This is one of the best versions of it I have ever heard.
Three years late but, Thank you for your service sir!
Simply put ....... Outstanding
I bet hairs would stand up on back of neck to hear it live. Great theme this.
Stormin Boy, especially the 5 beats at the beginning.
Stormin Boy I, having a mother in the Choir, to was blessed enough to be at this concert live. Truly an amazing experience! If you live anywhere near Salt Lake, I'd really urge you to go to one of the choir and orchestra at Temple square performances, it's a breathtaking experience.
They did just listening to it!!
No doubt!
Wonderful! Boston Pops edges out..

No words can express how much I love this orchestra!!!!
They are so Awusome and so is the Choir!!!❤❤❤❤❤
WHERE'S MY VOLUME CONTROL??!! DANG, I CAN'T GET IT LOUDER!! I want it to fill my ears and brain, it's such a magnificent arrangement, more like a short version of the suite. I LOVE THIS!!!!!!!!!

This is one that makes your eyes tear up. A great theme by a great composer for a great movie. The trifecta
Don't forget to hear the theme from "The Big Country". Magnificent as well!!
I remember listening to this piece when I was very little! Love this composition so much, it makes me want to dance to it! 💖😊
Shreya Choudhury You should be dancing too it. 😉😋😂😁
An all time incredible classic of western film music done to perfection by the Temple Square Orchestra! Bravo!
this, the comancheros and hallelujah trail, the man was a genius
This orchestra can do anything.
They're pretty good, but they're not a virtuoso philharmonic orchestra.
Makes the spirit soar...Beautiful!
It matters not if one has religious beliefs, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra are wonderful. Beautiful music.
Clearly, Elmer Bernstein borrowed heavily from Aaron Copland in creating this music, and I have no problem with that. If you are going to emulate someone, it's best to draw upon the masters. Copland would probably be flattered, and Bernstein's score created an entire genre of cowboy-type music. I also think that Bernstein would be very happy with this production. It's great to see that this music could not have been created without a lot of ingenuity. When you just listen to the tune, you don't get the sense that there is an entire orchestra at work. It's not fluff. Seeing an entire orchestra in action gives you that added dimension -- that the score has a lot of depth and nuance.
Thor Odinson Bernstein took a national virtuoso's work and beat it into his own national treasure, a piece that caught the frontier spirit that still lives in many parts of our great country.
I remember watching the film when i was a kid . I'm 54 now. I watch both films 1964 and 2016.
SADDLE UP!!
What a beautiful piece of music. Elmer Bernstein was a genius for creating this! I grew up in reggae country but absolutely love it.
