- This is a walkaround video where I will discuss History and things I have done to my 1965 Dodge D500. It has come a long way from when I got it, but there is still a lot that needs to be done. I will be uploading videos of this truck from time to time.
The truck was purchased from Mr. Colwell over at vintagemilitarytrucks.com . If you want a project of your own or just want a cool old military truck visit his site. He is very passionate about these trucks and has a huge selection. There are lots of vehicles and trucks just like this one for sale on the for sale page at www.vintagemilitarytrucks.com/... . There is also a FaceBook Page for Vintage Military Trucks at JohnColwellVintageMilitaryTrucks .

Happy Fourth to all. If you have served in the Military or Law Enforcement Thank You for your service! I wouldn’t be able to restore these beasts without living in a nation protected selfless people like you!

Thank you for your support of our military

Greetings from Australia. Love the Dodge. My old man always said "If you can't afford a Dodge, dodge a Ford" Thanks for sharing
Im going to have to use that lol. Thank you for taking a look at my truck!
Love to see old trucks running
I agree! They are definitely special machines that have an awesome place in my heart! Thanks for watching!
It's really great 2 see some body keeping & restoring the old medium duty work trucks that help build this country. Especially a DODGE! Mopar Or No Car.
Thank you sir! These size trucks 100% helped build America. Most of them are now rotting in fields and I hate that. Mopar or no car!
I'm sure that is the original mileage. The issue with those trucks is that they didn't go far, but the engine spent it's time running the pump. That is a clean frame considering it was a taker. They can suffer from condensation rust. I do like the styling of those trucks. It's nice to see someone saving those.
I appreciate it! There are plenty of tankers out there I just think people are scared of the challenge. It is very daunting to start a project like that. Thank you for watching!
Great work!! Love the old Dodge trucks! Look forward to seeing more!
Thanks for watching!
The truck frame, rims and tires look amazing! Awesome job!
Thanks! It was a lot of work but it is a really cool truck now!
The old slant 6 love it
Thanks! Leaning tower of Power!!!!

YOU DID A GOOD JOB YOUNG MAN / THANKS FOR SHARING / A GOOD OLD TRUCK THAT EVERY GUY LIKES
That is right! Thanks for watching!
I have a 64 D500 dump. Exactly the same color. I'm still working on mine.
Awesome! They are really cool trucks! I love the triangle light trucks and would love to have one some day! Im still working on mine too. She is far from finished. Always got some thing that needs to be redone lol. Thanks for watching!
I have a old 66 Dodge L600 dump truck that my uncle use to have and he used it for collecting scrap out at his farm it's going a 361 Big Block in it anyway I use to love the truck when I was a kid and he was going to sell it so I bought it off him and I just love the truck it looks like a A100 truck but on a bigger frame and it has a two speed rear end in it and those trucks are rare from what I have been told
The medium duty L series trucks are pretty hard to come by. A L series dump is pretty cool! Does it still run?
Great to see the 1965 D500 Dodge truck back on the road again. Cheers!
Thank you! It definitely sticks out!
Keep em coming i love dodge
Mopar or no car! Thank you for watching!
Absolutely fantastic! Hard work restoring, but a labor of love, I'm sure.
Thank you! They are a lot of work but in the end when you see them rolling down the road amongst normal cars it is a special sight! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the ride! I love these old school dodge trucks!
You are welcome! They definitely are special vehicles! Thanks for watching!
Nice ole girl to have in a great collection seems very solid !!!
Thank you! Aint a whole lot wrong with her thats for sure! Very simple and reliable.
Heck yeah I will like to see it
AWESOME!! Thank you for sharing it with us :)👊
Thanks for watching! 👊
Thanks for the ride! Love the truck!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the content!
Love the fact that your saving and preserving this old Dodge’s! Our Dad worked for a Dodge dealer in the 60’s and always had some Mopar stuff at home.
Thank you! Mopar or no car! They are awesome trucks and are something really special. I bet your father might have worked on a similar truck. That is pretty cool. Thanks for watching!
Their wrecker was 63 400 slant 6 with a 4 speed that also plowed snow in the winter. Rode in that a few times as a kid going on calls with him.
@@MichaelRHull-wy7wg basically the same truck! Dash is a little different but pretty close to mine. Hopefully my video brought back a few good memories!
Those 2 dodge tractor s you have are sharp sir.
Thank you sir and thank you for watching!
Awesome adventure little brother
Its a great driver!
Great video, really like the old dodge trucks looking forward to seeing them progress 😊
Thank you for watching!
i enjoy your truck thank you for posting beautiful frame ,wheels slant 6 and edison yellow.
Thank You! And you are very welcome!! I love these old d series trucks. There is something really special about them! Thanks for watching!
Nice work. Looking forward to seeing more.
Thank you!
Awesome Dodge
That it is! It looks small next to the other trucks lol!
@@OLDSKUULGARAGE 😂😂
That is a beautiful model old 500! Very well preserved!
Thank you sir! I have definitely tried to preserve most of it. These trucks are too cool to change them up! Thanks for watching!
@OLDSKUULGARAGE Sure thing! Well done my friend! 😁👍
It's nice to see these vehicle's restored,,i think this particular truck would make a great camper vehicle, and it defenetly has my attention for a large camper truck 🚚 where, for me, speed is not the need.
Thank you, i have put a lot of work into it this far. Still a ways to go though! I will be making it a stake bed truck. Definitely not a fast one lol. Thanks for Watching!
Sounds great for a 6 banger
It sounds almost like a diesel.
@@OLDSKUULGARAGE yes it does
Love your "collection" Nicholas and thank you for starting up your channel and posting these videos ( & more to come) of these older Dodge medium dutyand above trucks. My Father has years ago a 77 d-700 that he ran until it could be run no more as well as our family are huge Dodge fans so you have one new subscriber and looking forward to more to come sir! 👍👍👍
Thank you for the kind words! Im sure watching some of the videos brings back some memories!
@@OLDSKUULGARAGE Many many good old memories from long ago as my father just passed away last week besides so finding your channel with the old doge trucks was perfect! Thank You! 🙂
@@marlinmr7 I’m sorry for the loss of your Father. I hope my video gave you a little happiness this week. Thoughts and prayers going out to your Family. Have a blessed one.

It has issues here and there but overall amazing shape!

@@nelsonmattoon150 thank you sir!
One of these in my county that was for sale last year, it was a green forestry truck with the water tank on it, has a v8 and the owner said the tank does not go with it. Sat for a real long time, I didn't look it over really good but will try to check back on it soon.
They are great trucks and getting rarer by the day. If it isn’t there you can always check VintageMilitaryTrucks.com . He has a lot of these trucks for sale. The tanker trucks are nice because you can recoup money back from buying it. But it is a-lot of work too. Thanks for watching!
It sure did!
You do nice work! Your haircut and RayBans really fit that truck, you look right out of 1965 driving that rig.
Thank you! That cleaning the frame is no joke! Definitely going the soda blasting route next time lol! Yeah, i never did think my hair and glasses really do fit. I guess i am old school at heart 😂. Thank you for watching!
@@OLDSKUULGARAGE The frame really does look to be in great shape after you cleaned and painted it! I subbed, I look forward to see more about your trucks!

This is my favorite videos because my grandfather had the same truck except his had a V8 and a 5spd with a 2spd rear axel. He logged and farmed with draft horses plus we competed in horsepulling contests all over the east coast. The 65 was his horse truck and a friend turned up the carb so it would run like a scalded dog . Ours had the regular gas tank behind the seat plus a 75 gallon saddle tank . Always enjoy ALL your videos thank you for posting.
Thank you for watching! Im sure it is straight memories for you while watching the driving part! My c800 has a 413 and 5spd with the 2speed axle. Again thank you for watching!!
Frames never easy to paint
Especially when you get to the mounts for the engine and transmission.
@@OLDSKUULGARAGE right
Excellent, interesting video. The only thing I didn't like was when he was driving for a short time that awful noise or sound not of the truck, but that new crappy wrap "music" played. I just glad it was for a short time. Since that was a 1965 Dodge d-500, a classy tune from that year should have been played instead. There were plenty of neat songs that came from 1965. Or perhaps since he painted that truck yellow, that 1966 song by Donovan could have been played "mellow yellow". Anyway, I wonder if a d-500 is either a 2 or 2 1/2 ton truck.
Thanks for watching my video! I had to put royalty free music in because any tracks like you mentioned cost money and have rules of how I can use the songs generally. It sucks sometimes!
Oh, I didn't realize that. But, yes, I agree with what you mentioned in that those rules about what music you can use on your video " sucks". Anyhow, much beneficial fortune on your continuation of laboring on your rare 1965 2nd series d-500 former military tank truck. I have a 1969 dodge d-200 camper special 3/4 ton truck that's tan with white top that's been through the "ringer", but still runs.
@@DavidChrisCastillo-im1wg thank you! And still running is all that matters! Doesnt take much to keep these trucks around. I think that is part of their beauty! Camper trucks are getting rare as it is!
NICE OLD DODGE! What is the other gearshift lever for??
Thanks! It is a PTO drive shifter. When the truck was a tanker, it had a pump underneath that was run off of the pto on the transmission. I plant to keep it, but I dont really have a use currently for it. Thanks for watching!
Awesome truck, great work on the restoration! What did you do for the rubber brake hoses at the wheels?
Thanks still have some work to go but majority of the work is done. The rubber brake hoses have a specific dorman part number that took quite a while to find but I was able to source some. If you have the originals it would be really easy to have them made at a hydraulic hose crimping place. Would you like me to try and find the tags/part numbers? I am positive I saved them.
That would be amazing man!
@@mattglen6050 I could have sworn I saved the part numbers but I didn’t! Stupid me. So I looked it all up again and found the Dorman Part Numbers for all the brake lines. Dodge used all the same brake hoses pretty much with very minor differences in length across them. Hope this helps out cause it took a while to find originally!
x2 Front Hoses - Dorman H8116
x1 Hose from the tube coming out of the master to the tube going to the hydro boost - Dorman H33950
x1 Rear Frame to Axle Hose - Dorman H4900
Thank you very much sir! I appreciate the help!
Nice old dodge ! Once you get some weight on it the truck should drive better !
Im ready to be able to use the truck for hauling stuff too. All in time. Thank you for watching!
Did not know that
5 and 6 lug wheels are very rare.
@@OLDSKUULGARAGE interesting I didn't know that
does your garage make clones of this truck ? i'd want one. thxs
At some point I would love to restore vehicles for people. Or even just get some major mechanical work done for them so they can use the trucks or finish the restoration themselves. But as for right now I am swamped with my own projects lol. But maybe at some point when things clear up I will get into it.
@@OLDSKUULGARAGE thank you for your response.

Enough of the Dash video ! I want to see the Truck Body going down the ROAD ! - Hire a cameraman - Cool Cab -
Yeah, it definitely could have been better no doubt! Im working on some stuff to get video of trucks outside of the cab in the day as well as at night! Thanks for watching!
i love the frame and tires and rims slant 6 best motor. my dad wkd for edison and we got to buy their used slant 6beach wagons truck is the best on the net. i keep watching thanks for posting your high and tight is cool keep that truck .
Thank you! The frame was a lot of work! They are such simple engines and rock solid too! Could probably be considered one of the best gas engines made by chrysler as well! I really appreciate the views and comments as well!
That truck is awesome BESIDES that weak slant (just too small for a medium duty)…you need to put a big block in there or, preferably, a Cummins 4bt or 6bt. Look at all that room in the engine bay you have to work with! Anyway, just my opinion, cool truck either way. Thanks for sharing
It isnt underpowered if you have all day lol. They definitely are not very fast trucks lol but they surprisingly got the job done. There is a lot of space in the engine bay as you said! I can sit in it with the motor! Thanks for watching!
