Awesome!! TONS of progress, you have been busy! Enjoyed the drop as always Nicholas and I Thank You for sharing with us
Definitely a big step out of the way to getting the truck moving again. I appreciate you stopping by as always. Thanks for watching!
Nicholas, that was a great boost and a payoff for all your hard work,, I couldn't see but I bet your knees might have buckled a little 😅 Loved the restart, itt was so crisp , congratulations ,,you done your homework well,,Thanks for sharing,,
Thank you! It most certainly was a boost! Definitely nerve racking too as I have never done such a thing on camera before. Kind of had to put my money where my mouth is! 😂. Thank you for watching my videos!
That NTC 350 sounds good man good job I drove those engines for 48 years and never had one of them to come a part with me
Thank you! Im definitely glad to have her going! Just a little closer to actually moving down the road haha. It definitely was running very strong and is a true testament to how well built they are. Im glad there were no issues on startup. I knew there wouldnt be but there is always that little voice keeping me in check! 48 years is an impressive amount of time to do anything let alone driving trucks! Thank you for keeping this country going round!
Nice Fab work on that battery box👍🏻
Thank you! Definitely came out really good and a lot better than I was expecting! Thanks for watching!
I can’t imagine what the air drag is on those dodges, those are the most square vehicles I’ve ever seen lol I dig them because they are so square & industrial looking.
The amount of drag is…. Yes. 😂. I love the industrial look as well! The whole cab was buck riveted by hand. And everything was mainly off the shelf parts. A true keep it on the road forever truck. I love the look so much ahahahah. Thanks for watching!
@@OLDSKUULGARAGE can’t wait to see the video of you cruising it down the road one day!
Noticed you hadn’t posted in a bit. Boy you’ve made a lot of progress on the truck. Sounds like you’ll have a bit of wiring work to do on the truck. I think that’s an electric solenoid that shuts the fuel off to shut it down. Battery box looks great on it. You did a really nice fabrication job on it just like the grille. Can’t wait to see next update!
Thank you! Im definitely hoping it is just a stuck solenoid or a bad ground. I may have to rewire every ignition circuit but we will see when we get there. Out of sight out of mind lol. Almost all the wiring under the dash needs redone. We will get her there though! Thanks for watching!
Wonderfully done young sir ! Another Chrysler product saved . Now all it needs is a wormburner exhaust for driver comfort and fake twin intake and exhaust stacks for show !! Love it. Alex in Australia
Thank you! I’ve definitely got some ideas but I need to get a purging setup going so I can use a stainless exhaust! It will be nice and shiny! Thanks for watching!
Nice one Nicholas, all that meticulous preparation really paid off.
Thank you! Thank you for your comment last video as well on the water sitting over the oil! It was something I failed to think about and definitely needed to be checked/addressed. Thank you!
Excellent video that is a really nice looking truck. Per US DOT regulations you need to have a stainless steel flex line from the air compressor to the first wet air tank for vibration and engine twist and thermal expansion when that truck was new it had a all copper tube
Thank you! I love this truck! Stainless ptfe lines aren’t required unless the truck is plumbed in nylon. Reason being the heat from the compressor will melt the nylon tubing entirely. I will be doing copper out of the compressor directly to a flex line somewhere to combat this as the copper does great with heat compared to all flex lines. I definitely need flex lines though as you said because torsion from the engine. I wont be able to get completely away from flex lines but I will change what lines I can. Hope this clarified a bit what I said in the video. Thanks for watching!
Bro! I’m so happy for you! You’ve done such a nice job so far I just knew it would start. You do excellent work my friend. I love these old Dodges!
Thank you Mr. Scott! I definitely try to do my best and Im glad it shows! I love these old Dodges as well! Not that I am biased in any way 😂. Thanks for watching!
Hey Nicholas!! That was a fun video to watch. I really appreciate your craftsmanship and the detailed explanation of your work. Can’t wait for the next video. Keep up the good work!!
Thank you very much! Thank you for appreciating the work I have done so far as well! Thanks for watching!
Another goal achieved! I love it when a plan comes together.

Great work!! I’m so happy for you! I look forward to future updates!! Keep up the awesome restoration! 😊
Thank you! It was a huge relief to know I at least have a runner! Thanks for watching!
Old school cement mixer used as a gas tank cleaner. Bungy or ratchet strap the tank to the mixer, insert your harbor freight polishing or cleaning stones inside tank and turn on. Might be noisy though.
Did it with motorcycle gas tanks. We'd put foam seat cushions from couch in drum and the fuel tank inside mixer drum.
Hmmmm… i have an old mixer laying around and I dont know how I hadnt thought of doing that. It is a good speed and should be plenty strong enough. Thank you for the recommendation! Thanks for watching as well!
I second the cement mixer for cleaning tanks. I dump in some mineral spirits and a couple of handfuls of sheet rock screws and steel nuts in it if there is rust or stuck on goo in there. Use a magnet to pull out the steel.
@@mshort7087 i have had great luck with 25% white vinegar but the issue is the flash rust afterwards is horrible to deal with to get just a coating down inside a tank. Im definitely going to see if I can rig something up with the mixer.
Awesome job! You are so thorough with your work and have a great attention for the details. Thank you for the video. God bless.
Thank you!!!! I try to be as thorough as possible because it is always the small stuff that gets ya! Thank you for watching and have a great week!

Great job as always! Better than factory on the battery box build! Glad to see her run, sounded pretty good. We always had Dodge trucks in our business, yes, they were not pretty, but they always got the job done! Never had a Dodge tractor, but plenty of straight trucks. Another great video, keep up the good work.!
Thank you!! She definitely sounds great especially for how long she has been sitting. And your trucks are awesome! A working truck is pretty truck! I appreciate you watching my videos!
Congratulations! That was a huge amount of work to get to this point. It sounds wonderful!
Thank you very much! Nothing like the sound of an 855!!! Thanks for watching as always!
Super ride brother taking pride in doing it right not trying to coddle it up wish you good luck
Thank you! Doing it right is definitely the way even if it takes more time! The final product is always lengths better than just getting by! Thanks for watching! Have a great rest of your week!
That's exciting! Makes want to start working on my old Willys motor
I was so happy to finally get her going! Its gonna be awesome when you get that engine going on the willys. Definitely excited to see what you do with it! I really enjoy watching your channel, you make it work without any crazy equipment. And it still comes out looking like a machine did it! You are a true craftsman!
Nicholas great job sounds great👍
Thank you! She is most definitely a runner and I cant wait to see her on the road again! Thanks for watching my videos!
Wow...this is one very cool video. It appeared as a "sidebar" recommendation alongside something else I was watching, and -- after seeing the Dodge L1000 -- I had to check it out!! I've been driving truck 33+ years, and -- despite their "unfashionable" looks -- I've always liked Dodge L1000 cabovers...even going back to when I was a kid playing with Nylint metal toy trucks!! The first time I saw one of these beauties was in 1964 at the New York World's Fair, at an Allied Van Lines exhibit (of all things!!). An AVL tractor-trailer rig was positioned right-up-front, with an L1000 proudly standing there..."something" about that giant square cab with that white-ivory steering wheel staring at me through that huge flat-glass windshield impressed me to no end. To your video...your work is impeccable...very impressive. 👍👍I am now a subscriber.
They really are awesome trucks! The 1964-66 I believe all had the fiberglass fenders and and refrigerator style door handles! It is funny you mention the Ivory-White steering wheel as well! That is one of the first things that caught my eye of how close it is to the windshield and I just really liked it! The dash is awesome as well, very industrial. Thank you for commending my work, it means a lot when people appreciate the small stuff that makes a big difference! So thank you!!!
Unless a big can a hole in the block it will run. Incredible engines.
This one I dont know. There was a lot of rust in the fuel lines. It may have but could have hurt the injectors. They definitely are very robust engines no doubt though! Thanks for watching!
Congrats! That is so cool! She sounds good
Thank you! She really sounds wonderful for sitting for quite a while! Thanks for watching!
Great job Nicholas,if the content stays this good make the videos as long as you want, I’m enjoying them emencely👍👍👍👍
This means a lot! Thank you! Im definitely trying to improve my videos and learn a lot from every upload! As always thank you for watching my video!
Yes, please show the tubing bending. You did a great job
Thank You! I will be doing a video on it at some point! It seems people are interested! Thanks for watching!
It's great to hear old iron sound so much like new. You did a great job!
I agree! It is definitely very special! A lot of what we have today was built because of equipment like this and it so cool! Thank you for watching!
I drove a cabover like this-single axle that was used delivering plumbing supplies out of Grand Rapids Michigan. One time the water pump went out which was on a Detroit but dodge used there own water pump to make it fit. Good to remember about some of these issues. Also the heater fan was a complex issue to have to replace.
That is interesting! I didn’t know the detroits used a Dodge water pump! The cummins trucks if they were slanted had dodge only parts as well. Not every part but little changes were needed to some because the engine angle. Similar to some horizontal mount 855s I recently learned about! Do you recall what was wrong with the heater fan? Is it just rot that eats out the motor or something similar?
@@OLDSKUULGARAGE On that slanted Cummins engine, there were special oil diverter clips fastened on the top end under the rocker covers so everything could be lubed properly. Also a different Bell housing to align the engine to frame mounts(front and rear). Bill
@@billtodd6509 wow I didnt know they had different oiling stuff on the top end! Did the horizontal mount engines in buses have similar oiling systems for the valve trains?
C F and some of the other companies used these single axles for pulling doubles . The company I worked for ended up with 3 single axles and 1 double! At that time we finally got some “new “ trailers which were 45 ‘- 96 “ . For being all spring suspension - they were not all that bad to drive!
The heater fans would just start making a noise and then they wouldn’t work very long
This old girl is air ride but my ‘68 single axle is spring ride. You talking about driving it makes me want to get it going even more! I cant wait to see how these trucks ride!
Awesome episode Nick, Iike others have said, your attention to detail is to be commended. It was worth the wait between posts to see what you have achieved. I like that you like to keep things old school too. Thats a sweet job on the battery box and all those new lines just look fantastic. Slow and steady wins the race. Keep doing what you are doing and lets get you some more subscribers!
Thank you very much! I definitely love the old school stuff as it worked and helped build America and many other countries! Im glad there are people like yourself that appreciate this stuff like I do! Thank you for watching and for leaving such a nice comment as well!
@OLDSKUULGARAGE No worries Nick 👍 and by the way, I love the old school 80's sounding synth sound tracks, it really adds to the flavour of the channel. Lookin forward to the next one! Cheers, Mike from New Zealand
@@MtothaMFJ oh man I am glad someone noticed! I am a Miami Vice fanatic to say the least, so synth wave is an easy way to implement that style of music without breaking the bank! Thank you for noticing!
Wow! All that hard work sure has payed off! I love all that stainless fuel line set up. Beautiful work sir! That is becoming a lost art.
All the work you’ve done so far has payed off. Seeing that ol girl start and run sure did put a smile on my face.
Great video dude. Can’t wait for the next one!
It definitely has paid off! It was so thrilling to get her going! I love bending tubing especially around tight turns and keeping multiple lines parallel. It is artwork when you are done! It is a great feeling too! Thanks for watching as always!
Congratulations. The Battery Box setup looks good.
Thank you! Lots of hours put into making that battery box look and work good again! Thank you for noticing!
Congrats, friend, sounds like you have a pretty straight running engine. That's the correct way to bring an old machine out of hibernation. Bill
Thank you sir, that means a lot. I definitely wanted to do it right as to not cause any damage. Thank you for your great comments and the information you provide. It is always welcomed!
@@OLDSKUULGARAGE If I were you, I would put new gaskets(head and auxillary gasket), and unloader valve spring on the air compressor, and a new air governor. The parts are relatively cheap and can be done without removing compressor. I saw the kits on eBay a while back and they were a bargain. That truck will be as good as it ever was. Bill
@@billtodd6509 oh wow I need to check that out! I will be doing all new gaskets up top on the engine as well (minus the head gaskets) when I add the jakes. I would like to change all of the manifold gaskets as well to be extra safe. She definitely should be alright when all done up!
@@OLDSKUULGARAGE Those Bendis air compressors are tuff. Most of the time they carbon up their little valves in the upper end that you can cure with that minor repair kit and a new air governor. She really sounded great for such a long downtime.
Great video and a massive achievement getting the engine running sounds amazing, alot of hard work paid off. Especially like your fuel filter bracket it looks really neat and tidy job, perfect 👍 looking forward to more video's keep up the good work
Thank you! It was super exciting getting the old girl going again! It definitely took a lot of fab work on all the parts especially that battery box and redesigning the base a little bit. Thanks for appreciating the work I did and for watching my video!
@@OLDSKUULGARAGE it was all great! I know what its like repairing the battery box that has old rusty steel and using new steel it can be challenging but looks absolutely great job and everything fits so well. The battery isolation switch is a good job, i would fancy one like that myself for my cherry picker that has 4 batteries. Ive been disconnecting them temporarily for now when not in use. You have an impressive collection of vehicles there. Its great to see them being restored and kept alive 👍
@@homemade_projects thank you so much! I love these trucks as they are each a piece of history. The are machines that worked and there is something very special about that. Especially this red one.
The battery disconnect is awesome but for four batteries I would recommend a beefier switch than what I have. It may suit your cherry picker better!
I really enjoy watching your channel as you do a lot of the same stuff that I do just in a different way or different equipment! I feel like I can get something from your vids as well every-time I watch! I am glad to have found others out there that love old machinery just like me. You are extremely pleasant to talk to as well and it really sets you are apart from the crowd. Thank you for doing what you do!!
@@OLDSKUULGARAGE It is very rewarding restoring engines/vehicles back to working conditions again, they really are underappreciated for what they did and its great some people put the effort keeping them alive. I collect vintage seagull outboards, they have no modern bearings all bushings running on 10:1 oil mix, British made from 1930's. As yet haven't made any video's on them, but i have so many to fully strip and rebuild hopefully this year might do some. They really are a lovely engine with exposed flywheel and often seen bringing men home in small boats known as a reliable engine. Absolute pleasure watching your video's and iam really getting into your repairs, ive only worked on a couple of diesel engines last year and would love to do more. Iam really glad to be watching your channel and thank you for your kind words, great to meet a professional like yourself 😀
@@homemade_projects i would love to see videos of the seagull outboard motors getting fixed up! They are so mechanical looking and very bare bones with no cowl or anything to cover up the goods. That would be seriously cool to see them completely redone or even just fixed with original patina! And I am no professional lol. Just an florida man that wants to build cool stuff 😂.
sounds great!!!
I agree Lol. Especially for something that has sat for quite a while there really was little struggle. This truck will give me a run for my money on the frame work though 😂!

Hi Nickolis, I thought you would get a kick out of seeing this old
Dodge Nascar hauler. It's on UA-cam channel Grassroots NASCAR racing. It even has the Petty Blue paint. Hope all is well. We just got the cab moved back 12 inches on my old Diamond T conventional and have the old butterfly hood over at a sheet metal shop in Pittsburgh to be lengthened into an extended hood. Have a nice Memorial Day, Bill

You can email them to me at olskuulproductions@outlook.com . Or reach out to me on Facebook under Nicholas OSG if you have one. Extended hood trucks always look so good! Especially the Diamond T’s and Brockways!
Hope you have a Blessed Memorial day as well!
I would have been more surprised if it hadn't started. Those old 855 engines are pretty amazing
Definitely robust! I wish the modern engines were this simple! Thanks for watching!
Not sure where you are from, as I’m new to the channel, but if its anywhere in the northeast you should bring a truck to the Macungie Truck Show in June, there’s not too many dodges around
Im in Northeast Florida. The truck will definitely see shows at some point! Thanks for watching!
The fan motor was a common issue which was a long repair if you did it the way you were supposed to-as most of the dash had to be taken apart but our (rednecked ) did by using a combination of a simple vise grip and screwdriver to make it happen by bending the lips up so as to avoid all of that . Also -With the fan / water pump as Dodge had such close clearance that was why they made them for themselves with repositioning outlets for water hoses .
I feel I will be venturing down this road here soon! Thank you for the info as I feel it will be useful. Thank you!
Glad it runs. Sounds good. I don't know about the ugly ducking lol. I think all the Dodge heavy trucks were awesome. Good work
It sounds great! I think they are awesome trucks as well but it seems there are people out there that think they are ugly lol. The flying brick 😂! Thank you for watching!
Great fab work. Maybe the sponsor can powder coat it?
Thank you! I have definitely considered it. But I dont want to have everything powder coated as I feel that would be almost an abuse of the relationship but it definitely has crossed my mind. I definitely want some bigger stuff powder coated like the wheels and diesel tanks.
My only issue with power coating the box would be I have no real way to fix a paint chip or scratch from normal use. I also have some others plans that may interfere with powder coating this specific box. I will discuss them in a future video for sure. Thanks for watching!
I was stuck on the N.Y. State freeway in 1989 in a 73’ Ford Cabover with a 318 Detroit. A guy had a truck with a load on it of going to Boston. I picked truck up in Mich. got to N.Y. When the motor ran away. Pulled fuel shutoff. It didn’t shut down.318s when ran low on fuel sludge previous driver had told owner truck left with no fuel) would hold injectors open allowing it to run away. 10 days before this guy got me another truck. I was young and waited with it. Paid me like $25 a day which wasn’t crap even then. The truck rounded out the cam when it ran away so he signed it over for cost of tow.
Wow! That was a long ten days I bet. I have never experienced a run away and pray I never have to. Im sure it was nerve racking to say the least! Was the Ford cabover a C series truck?
Congratulations on getting that L1000 up and running. Good job! 😎
love those old dodges, are you looking 4 a bighorn next
Maybe a bighorn or a medium duty L series would be cool! But I gotta finish the stuff I have right now before I move on to new projects lol. My plate is a bit full at the moment lol.
There we go!
Almost a matter of time till you're taking us for a trip around Jax like you did with the old c800 🤠👍🏽
On a different note the old two-tone yellow and blue cab over is there a chance of being able to rebuild the old roof at air conditioner is that a Kaiser up on top?
😊
I hope we will get her going solid here soon! And yes, I will be rebuilding that air unit on top of the 1968. If I cant, I want to find an original unit that dodge would have installed from the factory. Or maybe even make one. Thanks for watching!
Hello Nickolis, got another very novel channel for you to partake. This guy is building his own version of a Bighorn with a huge extended hood. Channel is called Old loaders and gutless motors, and the episode is called Home made Bighorn. I'm sure you will enjoy it. Hope you had a good holiday, Bill
Ahhh yes! I saw pics on facebook but had no clue there was a youtube channel for this stuff. Im definitely interested to see how it comes out in the end! I really want to see what the fenders will look like! Thanks for sharing his channel! I had a great holiday as well. I hope yours was great as well!
@@OLDSKUULGARAGE He s kind of edgy, but interesting. I was thinking of maybe the old military 5 ton 6x6 s with the longer exaggarated front fenders would be the ticket. Take care, Bill
@@billtodd6509 i agree. The kaisers definitely have a similar aesthetic to the c series. That style fender would 100% fit. Those springs for the hood will have to be pretty hefty to lift that hood 😂.
@@OLDSKUULGARAGE Personally I would just shape and length a military hood and use the old military hinges with no springs. I now know where there is a Big conventional with a 220 Cummins(single axle) near here, and I think we may go get it and get one of my grand kids a project started on maybe setting the cab back like he s doing.

Great channel, thanks; I would not have run the battery cables over the centre support flat bar; would make them shorter and not touching anyting but air and the appropriate teminals; hope nobody beats me up for my comment.
Thank you! I think I may add some spacers so everything is floating a bit. The style of lugs I chose do not raise the wires really at all so chafing of the wire could be an issue. I am using welding wire which is a lot better against abrasion compared to battery cable as well. I hope this helps the situation a bit for now. Thanks for watching!
Leave button turned out start it up then turn button other way with key on and see if it stays running then turn key off
It definitely might be some wiring issues up by that button that I need to address. It could be the fuel shutdown solenoid as well. I will trouble shoot the issue to see for sure! Thank you for the advice and for watching! I appreciate it.
Chrome don't pay the bills
That is right! Unless you chrome things, then it most definitely does haha!

I think I would at least connect the air cleaner, one small piece of debris in the turbo.........not good. Other than that, congrats!
I would have but a few issue arose with that. the air cleaner is rotted in some areas and has stuff beyond the filter. As well as the filter is quite old and filled with junk. I also wouldnt be able to stop the air flow quickly or reliably if the truck ran away on me. Definitely one of the first things I need to get to though! Thank you and thanks for watching!

I worked in Detroit in the late 60's and early 70's. Mobil Oil would fill our diesel fuel tanks. They had Dodge L--1000 COE tractors with a decal of a Winged Horse on the sides, pulling a large tanker trailer with a smaller pup trailer. A heavy load. No sleeper, and two thick, rough metal exhaust stacks. Not chrome. They used Detroit Diesel 2-cycle 8V-71 engines with the biggest injectors made. The DEEP AND LOUD ROAR they made was so impressive and fantastic. On calm, humid summer nights, I could hear them coming from a mile away, and I would run to get a closer glimpse as he got closer to our terminal. Pure adrenaline rush. I haven't heard anything that awesome, since.
