    Very cool! My home town had a major highway as the main street. I used to watch the trucks come through town. You're young yet. Wait until you get to be my age (same age as that truck) and see how many projects you have. You can never have too many. Once those trucks are lost to the scrapper, they're gone. God bless.

    • @OLDSKUULGARAGE
      @OLDSKUULGARAGE  7 місяців тому +1

      The hard part is they only get rarer! I agree with never having too many projects lol. That was part of the reason I saw value in this truck. I knew I could not only save it but get valuable information for the other L1000 on that restoration and vice versa. I cant wait to see them on the road again. Only a matter of time!

    Hey Nicholas! I really enjoy watching you working on the old Dodge trucks. In the late 70’s I drove a conventional swing out fender Dodge for a LTL freight company. It had a 318 Detroit with a 10 speed. One thing I remember about it was the doors didn’t fit tight and if it sat in the yard during a snowstorm one of the first things I had to do when I came to work at night was sweep the snow out of the floorboards. Keep up the good work!

    @larr991 7 місяців тому +2

    Glad to see you saving these old Dodges! Have a D600, and a B4 myself, great job you are doing. Were these local trucks? Don't be so nervous shifting that C series, if it has a new process trans in it, they shift nice, try double clutching it, that may help!

    • @OLDSKUULGARAGE
      @OLDSKUULGARAGE  7 місяців тому

      Thank you! The D and C series trucks came from John Colwell by vintagemilitarytrucks.com . The two L1000s and my Imperial were Marketplace finds.
      The c series has a spicer 5spd and she is very sloppy. The new process transmissions are really good and tempt me half of the time I drive it lol. If I dont drive the truck a whole lot it definitely shows as it did in the video. You really have to put your hours in on that truck but if you drop it for 2 months your back at square one. The truck was in a wreck at some point so it is possible to have physical damage in the gear box too.
      I cant explain it but to really show people. The other issue with it is, it has the 14” Heavy duty clutch and fly wheel. It is fine behind a diesel that shuts off nearly when you pull throttle but with the gas motor it can feel like a lifetime letting the revs drop. I want to do a video on it because it is a weird feeling and generally makes it very difficult to float 3rd to 4th and 4th to fifth because of wheel speed and gearing differences between the gears. It is definitely something that has not been documented very well and I want to share it. Especially when I have the L1000s driving I will be able to physically show the differences.
      I thank you for watching and commenting on my video!

    You know that Don Knotts(Barney Fife, the deputy on the Andy Griffith Show) ,was in a lot of Dodge Truck advertising shots and I have some old Overdrive Magazines from the sixties where he is in some color shots of a cabover just like yours. Ill look them up and make you some copies when I get some time and send them to you. That blue paint looks like it once could have been leased to Global Van Lines. That was the colors all the owner ops had to paint them. Happy New Year, Bill Id just repair the grill and paint it white like factory.

    • @OLDSKUULGARAGE
      @OLDSKUULGARAGE  7 місяців тому

      I believe don knotts may have been the lead advertising campaign from 65-68? Im not sure on the dates but I do know of many commercials he made with dodge. I didnt know there were magazine campaigns too! That is really cool! I know dodge wasnt heavy on the marketing for big trucks but I know they did put stuff out. Correct me if I am wrong but I feel they did more marketing for the early L1000s than they did for the bighorn. I would love to see what you have saved!
      It definitely could have been global van lines. I didnt know owner operators had different color requirements. I know it was owned by a Jimmy White Sr. I believe. Billy White was written on the back of the cab. I believe the truck was in the Texas Area and then maybe Central Alabama. The search for more data begins!
      I do have a spare grill that came with the truck! It is in very good condition with minor damage. I think I may take a crack at some fiberglass repair! Thanks for watching!

      That is good to know! I know that kysor had a lot of different units. So it can be a bit confusing.
      The vent window seals are from International Paystars. Specifically around 78 model year. I have not found an earlier cab yet with those windows. Then again I am not an international guru. Im pretty sure there were earlier models that used them as well. Thanks for watching!

    Well, I had some spare time over the weekend to dig up the old Dodge cabover advertising shots that were in my old Overdrive Magazines from the sixties and seventies including a multipage complete article going over a new cabover from front to rear including several interior shots(even the same shift knob as yours). Is there a PO Box # number or some other way to get them to you without infringing on your privavy. There is about 10 pages of material. Thanks. Bill

      Wow! I want to make a video going over this stuff! I think it would be awesome to document it on UA-cam!!! I have a mailbox at 5800 Beach Blvd. Ste. 203-173, Jacksonville, FL 32207. It can be addressed to OLD SKUUL GARAGE. I greatly appreciate you taking the time dig up this old material! I look forward to seeing it! Would you like the materials back when I am done?

      NO, thats alright, Ill make copies and you may keep and enjoy them for yourself. I racked my brain trying to find a photo of an earlier long hood
      dodge wrecker that a company up in either Wi or Mn had that was the predesessor to the BigHorn that had the same cab but had a long fabricated steel hood and swing out fenders and I know it was in one of my old Overdrive Magazines but its going to take some time to go page by page. Ill get those articles out asap. Enjoy, Bill@@OLDSKUULGARAGE

    You do know, that you have two very, very, rare remaining trucks, right? Ive been around and in trucking since the late 1950 s and seen a lot of models come and go, but you will seldom see any of these in trucking collections or museums. Please try to keep at least one of those original for posterity. Bill

      Yes I do understand. Things I plan on changing for the blue truck are things like moving away from compression fittings on the copper tubing. I love the old style look but I do prefer swagelok fittings. I will be adding a electric hudraulic pump for the lift but it will be hidden from sight as to not draw attention. It has the original spring brake chambers but they are completely locked up and financially/safety wise it makes more sense to modernize. I love stainless lines so adding them to the motor and things like that will be a change. BUT i want to retain the things that are important like rebuilding the battery box and returning the tanks under the battery box etc. I would like to add the steps that would be found on the dayton hubs from the late50s to mid 60s. Copper airlines will be on the truck. Also restoring the interior/leaving things original intact. This I can do to the blue truck, the red truck on the other hand has lost a lot of its originality. It has been abused so there will be more freedom on that front but I still want to keep a period correct look from its time. That is why the grill is an exact replica of the original and un modified.
      I have great respect for the trucking history and its changes. These are not luxury mobiles and never were intended to be. They did what they could designing trucks and the rest you had to deal with it. I understand these things. I want to preserve that as much as I can. I made this channel to help people realize what they can do when they apply their hands and that preservation of history does matter. Too many show boats out there that care more about what they look like to others than understanding the time capsule they may be ruining. This topic is very important to me, sadly it is respected less and less each day.

    I am thinking those vents and the seals are the same ones used on the RD Mack trucks from 1991-2004.
