I’m so tempted to purchase a Fuji XT-50 as a fun, family camera so I can see what all the fuss is about but I’m so nervous going from the a7RV with AI autofocus (which I use for weddings), to a focus system that is notorious for focusing on the nose, or eyebrow or background or the wrong person. I’d be photographing my toddler on the Fuji and he’s not staying still 😅 Very interested in hearing more about your transition to Fuji, and if it’s worth it because it does seem like extra work, which can distract from nailing the composition etc. XT-50 or a7CR… still on the fence

You have a terrific channel and I appreciate your candid assessments. The XT 5 is the only camera I have ever returned. I’m a long time Fuji user currently with the X Pro 2 and 3. Had all the previous XT models as well as a few X100's. Have older lenses plus the newer LM 23 and 33. Experience was that with tracking the green box indicated focus but it was wrong about half the time. No difference in shutter speeds or aperture just the focus was at another spot in the frame mostly in the background. Tried various combinations of the AF settings but no luck. Very glad it is working for you.

After the last firmware the problems were solved

@@ronald7482 I should have stated that I had updated the firmware for the body and any lens that needed it. Saw no substantial improvement.

Nice video and preset. I have Lr mobile for my Ipad. Can I use your preset as well?
In what kind of file will it be sent?

I love roaming around London with my X-T5 doing street pics. I spend maybe 80% of the time on AF-C and find it accurate enough for my needs. Especially with the zippy linear motors on my Fuji 33mm etc.
One of the more obscure settings I like on the X-T5 is 'RECALL CUSTOM 1 SETTING' (which I have set in a top button). It toggles between your current custom group (on the Q menu) and whatever setup you have for custom group C1. It's handy because it allows me to rapidly switch between settings suitable for very different circumstances.
Also worth noting is the 'AUTO UPDATE CUSTOM SETTING' option (which you enable or disable in the menu). It determines whether your custom groups (via the Q menu) are locked-in or instead keep varying as you play with them. Handily, regardless of how you set that, the first group that comes before C1 to C7 is always variable and maintains whatever you last did on it. In effect, the first group becomes my everyday, freeform one while groups C1 to C7 are fancy custom recipes that go much further than just having varied film simulations.
I also swear by Auto-ISO groups except in tricky light. I still control my exposure by setting my top Exposure Compensation knob to C, which diverts control of it over to the Front Command Dial (which I find easier to reach quickly). The Front Command Dial is then set to toggle (by depressing it) between Exposure Compensation and fine-tuning Shutter Speed. This is really handy and also (when I'm on Auto ISO) allows me to effectively 'lock' the dial by depressing it to switch it to Shutter Speed (preventing me from accidentally brushing it and changing my Exposure Compensation).

Thanks for the video. People always say Fuji's video autofocus is bad, but i didn't know it's so bad even on their latest cameras. It looks like my old Panasonic G80 or Sony A7II

Turning off face and eye autofocus, wow. Such a step backwards. I could totally shoot wedding like that, but I really enjoy tracking the subject, focusing on the composition, and being confident the shots will be sharp. We are def spoiled with Sony.
    Thanks for sharing!

From what I’ve seen the AF on Fuji is poor vs Competition. Today, I feel that there shouldn’t be any compromises.

Amazing cameras, but currently Fuji is at the very bottom of all camera brands when it comes to AF. I hope they manage to fix it.

Fiddling around with the AF stick the whole time, just because face detection isn't reliable or sticky enough is very annoying. The camera should ignore faces outside the AF frame or at least prioritise the face within the frame (as with light metering). Going off the rails while tracking? Standard for any Fujifilm camera (had four different). False positive AF results with eye AF is an additional problem, not being influenced by any setting.
BBF is a relict from DSLR-times. Very hard to learn and very uncomfortable. But that's a matter of taste. The list of workarounds to compensate Fujifilms crappy AF system is very long.

If it doesn't suit you, don't use it. It might be better to stick to the automatic AF of Sony.

    • @lumberjack3008

@jtes1442 Fujifilm should simply improve it's crappy AF system. Problem solved. Everyone who likes playing with the AF stick could do it anyway.

@@ChrisTurnerPhotographer we shoot weddings full fuji xt5s both for photo and video. as for the latest firmware i notice the af is kinda finicky and not working for us. so we just change into a different style of af which we obviously have options if we just figure it out and make it work for our workflow. its not as good as sony's or canons. but we enjoy using fuji more. showing the clients the shot we get just by the screens of our xt5s is a joy. the small form factor, the vintage look. the feel of holding it. the feel of the shutter and many more.. having a slower pace of AF than the competition is nothing in our opinion. as long as we enjoy using the tool we have is the most important thing when doing this passion and not feeling the work as work. me and my wife binge watch your fuji contents and enjoying it. we appreciate your work man. keep it up :D
