This is the best Fuji focusing video I've ever seen. You never have to switch between S C and M when using the camera yourself. You can switch to S and hand the camera to someone else and it works the way they expect.
on my Sony a7IV, when I press AF ON i follow the subject (continues mode), and when i press shutter I have single AF. But here on Fuji I can’t do this configuration. Your configuration are a little bit similar, but when you do that you don’t have face and eye detection. 😢 I hope Fuji add this features on futures upgrades.
Thanks for the video and useful tips JChen. I am also using the back button focus and really like this option. But there's a small handicap about using it in MF mode and choosing the "instant AF settings" as AF-S on the menu. It sounds nice and fast to use both of the modes (AF-S and AF-C) by doing the settings you mentioned and keeping the mode as MF from the button on the camera. But the handicap is that when you turn MF on, it's not possible to switch between the AF Modes as Single Point, Zone, Wide/Tracking and All. MF mode let you to use only single point AF option. Then when you need to change AF Modes as zone or wide/tracking still you need to turn AF-C on from the button at the front of the camera. But i think still your tip is very useful for those who use only single point AF Mode never needs to turn to other AF modes on.
I've owned a xt5 for a few months now and I've noticed that wide tracking or zone doesn't always work. It doesn't matter if I'm shooting from the hip (zone mode) or just building a composition with wide tracking. Today I found a video criticizing the fuji autofocus after the last update so I will try to use your set-ups in street photography. Thanks.
That was super-helpful!!! I've watched other videos on the subject, and came away thinking, back button focus, sounds too complicated. But you converted me! Thanks!
Beware of the XT5 focus peaking bug. Unlike on all other Fuji cameras, the focus peak highlights remain cluttering the screen when the XT5 shutter is half depressed making composition impossible in many cases. The EVF is not high enough resolution to focus accurately enough without highlights. Hundreds have registered a complaint, but no sign of a bug fix after many months.
Finally, I got the idea about back-focusing! I saw a lot of videos and everybody talks about it but never perfectly explains it like you, like everybody knows but not me. And it's changed, thank you very much ❤
Superb thanks. Just sold my X-Pro2 and acquired an X-T20 (size!) and finding there’s more to consider with BBF. This is the best demo so far. Now if only Fuji did Snap focus like my beloved GRIII! 😊
ohhhh i really didn't know you could move the focus point by looking through the viewfinder.... i just set it up on my xt5 and xe4. Thank you very much
Interesting video. Iv'e learned my X-T5 almost iside-out BUT I've never bothered to use the touch screen for focusing unless I'm using a tripod. So some useful tips in your vid.
Hey! I currently photograph with xt3 and set of lenses: 23mm from Viltrox, 30mm and 56mm from Sigma and 85mm from Viltrox. I am very pleased with my images (mainly outdoor portraits), but autofocus could use some improvement. Would you guys recommend upgrading the camera (for example to xt5) or lens?
Thank you for sharing such a valuable tips. I’m a beginner photographer and got a fujifilm xt5 and was wondering if this autofocus settings would also work for hospitality photography (food, interiors and architecture )? Thanks again 🙏
I appreciate all the time it must have taken to make this video! Props to you for figuring out all those settings!! I just wish it wasn’t so…complicated 😔 Just wanna take a picture ya know?
But when I push my shutter half press it locks autofocus and afc doesn’t work anymore. Even when I disconnect shutter from af and ae it still locks af?
you are a life saver....I am trying to shoot birds and cannot capture any....I was a canon shooter and my camera would pick up a speck and track with amazing focus....hoping your back button with give me a benefit...I am feeling like the worst photographer ever...thanks so much
I think you are confusing continuous focus with something that is not. Continuous focus doesn't mean that you can continually focus on different things but camera tracking the same thing.

Thanks Lon! Hope the video helps and have fun taking photos (:

Agreed!
Thank you for helping me to finally understand this.
I would love to see every setting on your X-T5 in a list.
Oh wow. This is absolute gold! Thank you 🙏
Glad it was helpful Stephen!

Add to that (MF+Instant AF-C): AF tracking stops as soon as you half-press the shutter.

No nonsense. Great rundown. You have changed my methods!
Glad it helps! Have fun creating!
Thanks a bunch, now my focus is always on point by aiming at objects/faces. Fuji X-S20 here.
That's great to hear! Have fun creating!
Excellent tutorial, very helpful and will use to set up my xt5, thank you
Glad it was helpful Laurel and have fun with your new xt5 (:
I found your channel by searching X-t5 setup. I like your thought processes and changed a couple of setting in my X-t5. I have now subscribed.
Thanks for watching and welcome aboard Stephen!

Snap focus would be a killer feature to have on the Fujifilm!
This video helps a lot this is the best way of focusing to me this video really helped thank you

Nice, have fun shooting!
Could you pls do this video for XS20

Absolutely! Have fun creating!
but can you stay in manual mode AND use autofocus?
I appreciate all the time it must have taken to make this video! Props to you for figuring out all those settings!! I just wish it wasn’t so…complicated 😔 Just wanna take a picture ya know?
Haha I feel you

Thank you, thank you thank you for this beautiful lesson. 😜🖖
Glad it was helpful!

Excellent video!
Thanks Jason!
Would it work for video??
how to setting still 40mp ?
Great tips!
I’m trying to figure out AF-C for video with the 23mm 1.4 mark 2. Any suggestions? It’s terrible at the moment.
Can’t use back button focus because sometimes I shoot from the hip and click the shutter with my thumb.
When you select Manual focus on the front switch, subject and eye detection are disabled.
you are a life saver....I am trying to shoot birds and cannot capture any....I was a canon shooter and my camera would pick up a speck and track with amazing focus....hoping your back button with give me a benefit...I am feeling like the worst photographer ever...thanks so much
It's all good. Get back out there and give it another try. Happy shooting!
The background music in the video is really distracting and unhelpful.

i wish i never bought it !!
Why?
Excellent video! Thank you.
Thanks for stopping by!
