The band may be called the Steve Hackett Band, but to me its the new Genesis. Nad and Roger with Steve and the guests are nothing short of a new band of Genesis.
I saw Genesis perform this at the Rainbow Theatre in November 1973, fifty years ago, it never ages, nor do I tire of listening to it. We should be grateful to Steve H and his band for keeping this music alive.
it doesn't wear out. it's hard to believe, even though you now know every note....the better it gets. it calms the nerves and the heartbeat. Still crazy after all theses years......
I couldn't agree more with your comment - this is *how* I want to hear Genesis, not that modern crappy stuff from Duke onwards..... (I'm aware you might not agree with me though :) ).
@@Gaming-Shed Im onviously not a 'real fan' of Genesis, the second rate synth band either. You can conclude who or what is real as much as you like, as your opinion means nothing to me, if you can't recognise the genius of the Gabriel years, then to my mind you must be a dullard. And yes, apart from the technical sound quality, this imitation is not up to the original, as the earlier tapes can testify, but as a live experience, its pretty good nonetheless. Much better than the imitation 'plastic cheese' Genesis became, without Gabriel and Hackett, just to earn a few dollars on the US circuit to make the band rich, because American audiences didn't 'get' the earlier incarnation of Genesis, in sufficient numbers....................
Spectacular, as always! It's a shame how the original writers and players of this music have neither the humility or grace to admit how good it is that Steve keeps these songs not only alive, but energetic and fresh. As with every Hackett tour, got my tix and can't wait!
The Composer of this song ? is Steve Hackett himself ! Look at the first composer name next to 95 percent of the songs , Watcher of the Skies ( Hackett, Rutherford, Banks , Gabriel , Collins ) here for you the list of composers of songs of the 70s it is at the end of this documentary here the list of composers of Tony himself !!! for you guys , here ua-cam.com/video/c2F4mMOyIFE/v-deo.html
Steve gets the last laugh on Tony though, but its a somewhat unfortunate, ironic laugh, because of Phil's illness forcing Genesis to retire from making live music. Who would have thought it in 1977 though, that Steve would be the one keeping the Genesis flame alive.........?
I saw them in Toronto a couple of years ago when they were touring the 50th anniversary of the album Foxtrot. They performed the complete album and of course , this was the song they started off with. The whole performance was absolutely brilliant. Steve has assembled a great bunch of musicians to perform this wonderful music that we all grew up with.
Recently I heard Carpet Crawlers in Home Depot. Reignited my love of this music. I'd almost forgotten about it in life's bullshit the last many decades. My true favorite music..prog from the 70's ❤
Brilliant!! Goosebumps.... this is so good. Thank you Steve Hackett for assembling an amazing group of musicians and carrying the most excellent torch of Genesis.
Saw them perform this last night in Haddon Heights New Jersey... unbelievable All I can say is you got to go see this show everybody very impressed... Nad sounds great Steve sounds great the whole band played great..!...!.!..🎃
After listening to the first few records I wasn't a big fan either...a it tedious for me....then one night I really listened to this and I was sold. Still blown away by this tune...
I was at this concert and, for once, the usually appalling acoustics of the dustbin which is the Brighton Centre were overshadowed by this amazing set. I didn't get to see Genesis in their 70s heyday - only saw them in 1992 (at the Brighton Centre lol) - but this concert made up for that. If Steve Hackett tours again, go and see him!
Nobody performs music that can match the beauty, complexity and imagery that was created by these artists. I'm exceedingly pleased that it's still being performed live. My love for great music has me constantly searching for bands that can reach the pinnacle of musical performance. Bless this journey & by all means, rock on!!
The talent of Steve at 72 is as sharp at Steve at 32. And he doesn't look much older than 40 either! At least on camera, and you can't Photoshop that. Neither can you polish up a live performance much better, so these lads are in top form. They truly are the New Genesis. And Nad does Gabriel so well. Just fantastic. I have to get this.
In fact, there are truly even better. I saw them in Essen, Germany in 22 with Seconds Out and 23 with this. By far the two best rock concerts Ive ever seen. Freakin magic!
I was going to say that this IS Genesis, but I'd be doing Steve Hackett a disservice - he is not just carrying the flame, he is reigniting it and making it burn so much brighter. I've seen the 'official' Genesis since 1990 and they pale in comparison. I look forward to the next tour
There is a little story behind it. It was played on an unusual instrument called the mellotron which used tape recordings of real orchestras, solo flute from Strawberry fields for ever intro etc etc . The problem was it only had 8 seconds length to play that tape when the key is depressed , then after release it would rewind before that note could be played again. The other problem was that the tapes would stretch over time and go out of tune. As impoverished lads ( well kinda) they couldn't at the time fix this so Tony wrote the intro based on what notes he COULD use without it sounding terrible intonation wise. We are the beneficiaries though 🙂
Magnificently Awesome! This was the very first Genesis song I'd ever heard off Genesis Live and was hooked from the very first chord and was completely entranced listening to the music and staring at the Album cover with Gabriel and his glowing eyes! Altogether other worldly!!
I saw Genesis do this in the 70's at Stanley Theater in Pgh, PA and GD This is as real as it gets! Watcher was always one of my favorite tunes. The reason I got a Mellotron. Sylvan does a great job on vocals and posing. Everybody and Steve are so well rehearsed and the drummer is kicking! Thanks for posting.
Me wife and I saw the show last Sunday in DC. Astonishing. Best show I’ve been to in many a year. Everyone should see this show. Hopefully Steve and the band have another tour or two in them! Thank you Steve Hackett!
I saw Genesis perform at the Providence Performing Arts Center (then known as the Palace Concert Theatre) in Providence RI during this tour. I remember when they played this song, the entire audience rose to their feet and applauded for at least five minutes when it ended. Of all the many concerts I have seen both before and after, I consistently rank this one in the top three. What an incredible band they were. Glad to see Steve Hackett keeping the memory alive. I did keep my coveted ticket stub then months later I foolishly used it as a book mark when I went to graduate school that September and unfortunately lost track of it. Someone obviously got my souvenir....... I hope they kept it.
I was at The Scottish Rite Auditorium for the Fox Trot 50th! Now in October 2024 I will Fly to London to see the band perform The Lamb tour!! Gotta Love Steve and Genesis Revisited!!!
Just saw them last week at the Stafford Center just outside of Houston. What a great show it was! Thanks Mr. Hackett! You are a living legend! I never got tired of hearing your wonderful music. 👍😁
Al fin pude disfrutar y extasiarme con la brillante presentación en santiago de Chile el 15 de agosto, era mi sueño más preciado antes del fin de mis días. Gracias maestro Steve por tanto gozo que has dado a mi vida! 🙏
Early genesis was a miracle, so happy to see that Steve Hackett has brought the magic back!
The band may be called the Steve Hackett Band, but to me its the new Genesis. Nad and Roger with Steve and the guests are nothing short of a new band of Genesis.
💯% agree. But don't forget Rob: he's been playing with Steve for at least 20yrs now.
@@helenabarnett6441 Your damn right on that. Rob adds the mood and texture.
Not even close.
This isn’t Genesis, this is Revelation
Good rendition but missing two essentials ingredients.Gabriel vocal &Levy bass.

Nad Sylvan is super freaking awesome. Thank you Steve Hackett for keeping these masterpieces alive.
Nad Sylvan, as always - is spectacular on vocals.
There is hope that the “NEW GENESIS” will take us into the next 5 to 10 years!
The drummer is soooo great
His name is Craig Blundell and also perform with Steven Wilson.
Drumming - Single hand rhythm and then hand to bass pedal triplets at speed...amazing skills.
Steve is incredible and keeps the real Genesis alive
