    “ROUGH BALLS”
To be very honest with you...... I used to be the king of playing from the rough, in fact I used to like playing from the rough because it made it feel like it was on top of a tea but the more my swing got better, the harder it suddenly got. go figure it!

    “ROUGH BALLS”
That 4i Lockey hit he talked about cutting it a little bit.
That’s how I often play it from difficult rough.
The clubhead goes through more easier when slightly opened.

ROUGH BALLS. Excellent, practical, common sense tips. I usually remember that I know all this, just after I stuff a 3wood out of the heavy stuff, when I should have been hitting a 7iron. A little bit of thought beforehand goes a long way.

That's definitely something to consider. I checked my numbers on 18birdies and I am only hitting 35% of fairways. 44% left side and 21% right. "Rough Balls"

ROUGH BALLS. No matter how much I practice with hybrids, I remain very hot/cold with them once I'm on the course. Now that I'm hitting 10 fairways/round, I prefer the kind of club that I better with from the fairway, which is the "driving iron" style of hybrid. Just picked up the 3 & 4 Cobra Utility Irons. the sole is wide enough so that most lies in the rough are manageable, and the lies that aren't... I'm not getting to the green with a "wood-like" hybrid either.

I’m a 4 index, and just put a 23deg ping 410 hybrid in the bag an removed the Tm p790 4i. Even beyond the superior performance out of the rough, it’s just straighter. Maybe due to my specific swing, maybe due to bulge & roll? Who knows. I used to think i needed the 4i for punch shots, into wind, from under trees, etc...but I think you can do 98% of what you need to do with a 5i.

Definitely happened to me.... after a full fitting from PING for irons, driver and fairway, it started raining HARD so he just wanted to throw in a 3 Hydrip with similar specs to the others. Which probably would of worked fine but without actually hitting with it and testing it I decided to pull it out of my order.... and still don’t have a hybrid to this day!! 😆😆🤦🏻‍♂️

There's one shot I continually "NOPE". Im terrible at chipping up hill to a blind landing spot. I seem to rely greatly on being able to see where the ball is pitching, and taking a last second look at where Im trying to pitch is the last step in my preshot. How do I improve this?

I'm always hitting out of the rough. Shot 90 and hit 2 fairways in the round. My driver head cover is a dog because it goes "ruff". And yes, I can hit greens from the rough. Also I carry both a 4H and a 5H. I did hybrids at the end. I went through two sets of hybrids before I finally settled on the Cobra F9 hybrids. Those rails... those rails. I can hit them out of divots. And I use them for a variety of shots - punch outs, chip and runs, whack it, and fairway shots. Best clubs in my bag.

'Rough Balls' Where I live and play in dry, sunny Australia we get more bare lies in the rough than heavy, often with overhanging branches from Eucalyptus tress. I set my bag up with a 23° rinky and a 24° 5i partly because I struggle to punch the hybrid lower enough out of the rough and partly because I like the peak height hybrid coming into very firm long par 3's :)

    Rough Balls
I have a Cobra single length set which has two hybrids (3 & 4 iron equivalents). The hybrids are very good out of the rough because:
    1. 7 iron length shaft allows steeper angle of attack
    2. Heavier head (than standard hybrids) allows me to muscle through the grass more easily
    3. They have rails on the sole which gives me a bit more forgiveness

"ROUGH BALLS", I usually slice the ball into the right side rough, then i aim dead straight and pull my shot to the left rough due to the club snagging, wedge it into the green side bunker, 2 shots to get out, 3 putt, take my double-par and move on.

Would practicing out the rough make you better off the tee or fairway? Surely if your spending 70% in the rough, you definitely need to spend more time practicing hitting off a tee or fairway, so you will hopefully spend less time in the rough? That’s what I hope anyway. 😳😁

Great content Mark and Coach. Funny this has came out at this time as I tested hybrids to replace my 4 iron. I narrowed to three, G410, SIM Max and Mavrik Max on the range. What made my final decision was finding an area off the range more rough like. Chose the one that worked the best for me out of the taller stuff. I now have a Mavrik Max 4 hybrid Coach!

    “Rough Balls”...
The course that i typically play here in Malaysia is typically cowgrass ( I don’t know what its called in the U.K) and even in hot conditions the grass is generally sticky and even in the fairway the ball will not run very much. When in the rough and if the ball is really set down, you really need to ‘Hulk’ it out with the most lofted club since the grass really grabs the ball and the clubhead 💪💪💪🤞🤞

Another cracking video. I know others do this but, bring along a player / student who wouldn't possess the skill set that both of you have and see whether the results are similar. Everyone likes to bring the token "high handicapper", but in this instance and maybe other tricky scenarios (like the bunkers green side and fairway, obstacles to get around or over).

"Rough balls". I practice these ideas occasionally. More often, around our quite good practice areas, I practice some straight-forward chips and pitches first to warm up - then I find the most horrible lies I can, and try different clubs and different chip, pitch and bunker shots. It is interesting what I discover or work out, and it definitely helps when I play the course.

You might not see this one Mark, but I think this is a good question for everyone. If you're having a bad day on the golf course, do you think you should add your shot scope data from that day to the collective data? I think it may end up skewing results rather than showing an actual good average. Kind of like an 'outlier day'. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

Helpful video for longer rough. Rough Balls are tough, but here in Texas sometimes rough isn't thick so much as it's more soil and less grass...hit a fantastic approach the other day from basically a dirt path but I think it encouraged me to make sure I had clean contact. If my game is poor I will grip down a Driver set ball position between center mark on driver and shaft of club and hit it not that high but my game then is better . but also a confidence booster. I prefer irons no matter what place ball ends up and the 4 iron is my best club. paul

this is an amazing video explaining what's going on for a lot of us, that land in the 2nd cut and 3rd cut areas and the complete rough areas that are thick. So I can't thank you enough for doing this it gives great insight. Curious question though: In your normal iron shot, one would hit the ball first and then take a divot on a fairway, So given that premise, why in the rough are you moving the ball back in the stance? and when you demonstrated your practice swing, were you hitting the ground so much before the ball?

  • @nickmoon3937

Great video as always. Got fitted for a driver and 3 wood. Then realised I needed to sort my gapping out to irons and got fitted for a SIM 4 hybrid a few days later. Love it and hit it all the time- tee shots, long par 3s, rough. Haven’t hit my driver and 3 wood at all in last two rounds and best two scores of season. Should I now get a 3 or 5 hybrid?!

If the lie was pretty good in the rough after a poor drive I used to thump a 4 iron when I used to carry one if not I would get a 7 or 8 iron get it back in play and as far down as possible, shots closer to the green I would play around with various clubs from 9 to sand wedge, but I'm an a naughty old boy because I just loved playing and being out on the course I very rarely practise but in saying spent a lot of time hitting second shots from the rough after my drives ended up in there so you could say that was my practice ..ooops 😀. Rough balls
I'm usually alright off the tee but my shots from the rough are generally around the green. I've learnt to judge roll and bounce a lot better and really trying to visualise each shot first. If you can't visualise it, it probably ain't going to happen!

This is good stuff, however I noticed that the grass you are playing out of is a bit more "fluffy"...many of the course we play over here in the states have very dense rough. you generally will take a club extra because the denseness grabs the club pretty heavy.
