Imo, the most well rounded and best designed set *for competitive play* we've ever had and none of them exceed Swamperts BST. The signature moves and how they function being key, with great hidden abilities to match their stats.

I guess not the first one where 5 are viable, but maybe the first to have all of them in their regular forms all shine and play a regular role in the meta game without being niche
Protective pads are very useful on the duck. No burn from volcarona’s flame body. Plenty of physical attacks means that a tanky garchomp can really wither you away.
Quaquaval is pretty solid, I like to see it dancing around. Its name comes from the onomatopoeia quack quack (referring to the quacking of a duck), the Latin word aqua (water) and the word carnival. At least for Spanish speakers is easy to pronounce xD
not that easy for nowegian speakers, Q is rarely used here. quite easy to read multiple books in a row in norwegian (500+ page books) and not run into a Q.
I sometimes think that instead of the English carnival it uses the Spanish version carnaval. But everyone says it uses carnival though I guess it doesn't matter since both end with "val" anyways 🤷♂️ Edit: Or the Portuguese one lol I completely forgot that one.

Quaquaval is a combination of "Quack" and "Carnival", and Grafaiai is a combination of "Graffiti" and a corruption of "Aye-Aye", a lemur-like primate found in Madagascar (Yes, Maurice from the Madagascar films was one of these). They actually do have that long finger that Grafaiai has in real life, and local legend states that if an Aye-Aye raises that finger towards you, you are soon to die a painful death.
Fun fact: Shroodle is based on one of the earliest "modern" memes. It was a popular graffiti design called "Kilroy was here". Look it up, and suddenly Shroodles design just.. clicks
I love Quaquaval’s name, but that is mostly cause it’s derivative from Portuguese, and references a big part of Brazilian culture, that being the Carnaval. Yeah it’s the most famous part of our culture worldwide, and I’ld appreciate even more a more obscure reference like the Saci or something, but as it stands, I love Quaquaval, and hold it to very high standards

I use Quaqaval in my team and reach around 17xx Fucker is a great late gamer sweeper. You can either go for Tera Water for extra power Aqua Step or tera Steel to jump on Valiant / Clear Smog Amoongus.
I personally like Quaquaval's name. It's kinda weird, but it's fun to say, and also has like 5 different roots and origins. you got Quack or its portugese equvalent Qua-Qua, Aqua, Carnival, and Quaquaversal. Meowscarada is Meow and Mascarada (Spanish for Masquerade) Grafaiai is a bit of a stretch, but it's Graffiti and Ai-Ai, the species of monkey it's based on.
If any of the OU mons this gen were released any other generation, they would likely be banned. Game Freak really said "We're embracing power creep and you're along for the ride"
It's crazy to me that people will still diss this Pokémon and claim it's bad and will fall off, but even after the initial New Toy Syndrome, Quaquaval has still stood strong and stayed relevant. It's a genuinely good Pokémon in the metagame, and it's not just a low tier thing. It's used in a tournament to success, it's used at high ladder to much success, and I can't understand why some people still claim it's bad when it has beyond proven otherwise.
Is alright, but everything is showing it'll fall off this month. It already has the lowest usage of all starters and the Chien Pao ban could hurt its viability significantly, as well as the fact Greninja exists. It should stay in UU though.

Meowscarada is a powerful attacker from the get-go, Skeledirge is a tank/wall. Quaquaval is a sweeper and has some experimental options with bulky utility paths. Of course it's going to be the least used starter when Water-types in general compete with each other so fiercely, and in such a power crept meta where there's tons of sweepers and attackers to pick from. And yet it finds a way. Greninja is Water-type competition, fair, but Quaquaval differentiates itself from Greninja in numerous ways. Its boosts don't stop after claiming one kill, unlike Greninja's Battle Bond. And Protean Pokémon don't quite have the same role that setup sweepers and cleaners do. Plus, Quaquaval has actual defensive merits and a tolerable enough bulk spread, while Greninja only really has its base typing and possibly a Protean prediction/terrastalize to work with. If Quaquaval falls out of OU, that's fair. But I expect it to be a situation where the Pokemon IS genuinely good in OU, and usage statistics don't accurately reflect it.
I almost, *ALMOST* wish he had Victory Dance. It's a hilariously broken move, but it fits his theme and typing too. Just imagine, T1 victory dance and tank a hit, then you're faster than almost everything in the tier that would want to stay in on you so if you predict the switch just boost again, if not you wave crash/close combat and if you KO you get a +1 atk. 4 slot for a coverage move, or roost for if you predict the switch and had to switch in/took too much on the 1st hit. Like, yikes.
I'm just happy for one of the best/one of my favourite starters to finally be able to do its thing in OU, and the fact thay Gen 9 has all 3 able to be OU viable is really nice for everyone like me who likes to carry their starter through everything
I looked at the stat spread and abilities and couldn’t believe anyone would think any of the starters would be bad. They all have extremely good benefits.

I used quaquaval yesterday and this guy have Tara fairy skeledirge and I was about to lose until quaquaval has turn the title over and beat skeledirge with my quaquaval and that felt so satisfying oh I was on VGC
i love using lum berry to block from stopping quaqs momentum, works especially well of rotom amoongus and breloom but also helps with thunder wave, volcorona, skeledirge, toxic spikes, and just normal toxic
Honestly I was expecting the starters this generation to be alright at best, but they all blew my expectations with how many tools and pluses they have in their slotted roles. Quaquaval being no exception. Thing stared down a whole Battle Spot team of Palafin, Kingambit, and Gholdengo. Swords Dancing when the opponent was expecting a Close Combat against their Kingambit and swapped to Gholdengo let me 2HKO its Sash with Aqua Step, then they failed a prediction again with Sucker Punch while I was Roosting away my yellow health, then another Aqua Step to OHKO the Gambit put me at +4 Atk and +3 Speed to where a Close Combat was all she wrote against the Hero Palafin. So yeah, I totally love this guy even if I'm a Fuecoco man. And not just because it reminds me of Josuke Higashikata.
As a latino/Brazilian, I appreciate how those names roll outta my tongue. Specially Quaquaval, we freaked out when we learned a pokémon was inspired by Carnaval.
He has yet to snowball my team. But I have been outsmarted and overwhelmed by a flying tera one. And when I finally got rid of it it got hit with the revival blessing
Honestly i am in disagreement on the name part. I think gamefreak actually did a great job not making crappy names this time around. Not to mention I appreciate all the meta shake ups that have flipped a lot of reigning champs that have stayed in OU for multiple generations. Hopefully with the power creep they’ll allow gengar to have levitate back :|

It's OK, from my plays with and against it. It's win conditions are kinda awkward to get going and can some times just not start at all. Out of the starters I'd say it's the most balanced
i wish it had a slightly less noisy design (kinda hoped for a popeye the sailor man look), but i'm just happy that all 3 starters are good in ou for once. i just hope that it stays once urshifu comes out.
Honestly fear he's gonna drop once home comes. Urshifu-R with Swords Dance now has more immediate power, and guaranteed crits to help plow through defensive setup like Iron Defense Garg.
Quaquaval is a play of words from the obvious Quaq sound from the ducks and a spanish slang "chaval" (like kiddo), It may also be "Carnaval" which are festive thing in most spanish and portuguese regions. The dancing of Quaquaval is more likely to be Carnaval than Chaval.
I made a choice band set with this thing and its super fun but not very consistent like if you play it correctly the enemy will get destroyed the moveset is aqua step Cloce combat ice spinner and uturn
stall breaker is my favorite set (Max HP, almost max SpDef, a little speed with taunt/bulk up/roost/aqua step) because it really annoys these fatter builds with less offensive pressure. But I got my ass kicked by the u-turn set that's rising so that's probably great too
Honestly the only reason I don't think Quaquaval is not THAT good is because of its speed, ( I still think he deserved like 95 base speed ), but honestly, Aqua Step and its pretty high attack stat plus Swords Dance really makes the duck an actual threat

I have a love hate relationship with Quaquaval, BUT I do give gamefreak props. They turned pokemon to match culture and i love it. I think the concepts are sick
People don't get that Quaqaval can 100% CRIT anyone because of 2 moves. Focus Energy which makes every single attack until you switch pokemon or pokemon dies a better crit ratio. Aqua Cutter which has a higher crit chance than every other move. Combine those and you have a fucking hollow purple in your arsenal ready to crit every pokemon non stop.

I think is thematically great that the dancing duck gets basically a free dragon dance whenever it KO's with Aqua Step, we love gay Blaziken
Ive done like 5 sweeps with Quaquaval, seriously these starters felt like they where made with competitive players in mind.

Guys, uses Drizzle Life Orb Pelipper with Hurricane. It will become a one-shot fight based on your Pelipper's defense/hp

I made a choice band set with this thing and its super fun but not very consistent like if you play it correctly the enemy will get destroyed the moveset is aqua step Cloce combat ice spinner and uturn

stall breaker is my favorite set (Max HP, almost max SpDef, a little speed with taunt/bulk up/roost/aqua step) because it really annoys these fatter builds with less offensive pressure. But I got my ass kicked by the u-turn set that's rising so that's probably great too

Honestly the only reason I don't think Quaquaval is not THAT good is because of its speed, ( I still think he deserved like 95 base speed ), but honestly, Aqua Step and its pretty high attack stat plus Swords Dance really makes the duck an actual threat

I have a love hate relationship with Quaquaval, BUT I do give gamefreak props. They turned pokemon to match culture and i love it. I think the concepts are sick

@@N12015 Lumina Crash works wonderfully with specs + trick to prey on bulky switch-ins as well. It's just really efficient even by sweeper standards.

People don't get that Quaqaval can 100% CRIT anyone because of 2 moves. Focus Energy which makes every single attack until you switch pokemon or pokemon dies a better crit ratio. Aqua Cutter which has a higher crit chance than every other move. Combine those and you have a fucking hollow purple in your arsenal ready to crit every pokemon non stop.

Off topic from Quaquaval, some of the pokemon in gen 9 have long names and I'm a little bit annoyed by it. Maybe go from 'Quaquaval' to just 'Quaval'. I dunno man.
