- So I was looking online for Shoulder rig options for the C100 Mark II and I couldn't find much besides the expensive ones that cost's almost as much as the camera itself. They are nice though but I wanted something that is less complex and still get'ts the job done.
So I got creative...
I found the chinese Company Smallrig and found out you can built almost every rig you want.
For under 1000$ I got the following:
Baseplate:

15mm Rods 12 Inch:
www.smallrig.com/smallrig-allo...
15mm Rods 8 Inch:
www.smallrig.com/2pcs-15mm-bla...
Shoulder Pad:
www.smallrig.com/smallrig-shou...
Arri Rosette Double Side Rod Mount:
www.amazon.com/LanParte-Roset...
Arri Rossete Handle: www.smallrig.com/smallrig-arri...
Matte Box:
kamerar.com/collections/make-...
Follow Focus:
www.movofilms.be/movofilms-fl...
Atomos Recorder:
www.amazon.com/Atomos-Ninja-C...
Smallrig 15mm Rod Clamp with Shoe Mount: $26.00 (www.smallrig.com/smallrig-15mm...)
Smallrig Single Railblock: $10.39 (www.smallrig.com/smallrig-sing...)
Would I built it excactly the same way now? Probably not. For example I wish I would have invested in a better baseplate and for a few hundred dollars you can get a nice grip relocator too.
The Monitor/EVF solution is also not optimal. But you can also just use the rig without the mattebox, follow focus and monitor and you have a lightweight rig that is less obtrusive.
I hope this gives you some inspiration for your rig and if you have any questions feel free to leave a comment and I get back to you. - Фільми й анімація
I'm sure a lot of research went into this. Thank you for sharing!
Been looking for an affordable rig for my C100 mkii, nice post.
thanks man!
Great video. I see camera accessories that just seem crazy ($1k for a top handle?) and wonder who their market is. It doesn't make sense for the rig to cost more than the camera.
a great rig!
Love the rig! Do you by chance have any info on the baseplate you're using. Also how long are the 15mm rods at the bottom and on the top?? Thanks!
Thanks for pointing that out! I forgot to put the links in the discription. Now added the links to the baseplate and the rods! Short answer for the rods: They are 8 Inch & 12 Inch long.
What did you use to mount the monitor to the rail block? I don’t see that adapter listed.
Not related, but what is the name of the music? (If you remember!).
What did you use to mount the atomos?
Hi awesome video, what did you use as sunhood? what material is that?
Thank you
That was just thin black foam that I put together to make a longer sunhood. It's not the best solution because it moves with the screws of the ballhead... But once it's on it does the job :)
Hey, great video! I'm about to start a documentary project and need to buy a new camera. I'll be shooting over a one year period, travelling to romania and finland and shooting as i travel with my characters. Therefore I need to be as compact as possible. I am torn between a used c100m2 and a gh5. I was wondering if I need to think of a lightweight rig such as yours or if I can rely just on the lens' IS on the c100. Is it good enough? Can you get stable footage? Thank you!
Hey David, sorry for my late response. Maybe you already made your decision. I would strongly recomment the C100 mark 2 over the Gh5 for documentary work. First, the C100 MkII is much better in low light and you have a viewfinder when the sun is really bright. Second, the autofocus on the C100 MkII is really good and fast! Shooting a documentary only with manual focus sounds like a nightmare to me. Then you have built in ND filters. And you have good on board audio. And to be honest I almost never use my rig nowdays. Only if I have to shoot for a really long time and I have to move around. If you combine it with a Canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS lens for example, you have good IS and you can shoot amlost everything with this combo. Sometimes I use my canon 35mm IS for following shots and it is a bit shaky but it feels natural. A wider focal lenght will reduce shakiness even more. Hope that helps!
Hey man, great stuff. thanks. In the end i did go for a used c100m2 and 17-55 2.8. great combo. loving it. still having a little trouble figuring out how to expose c-log for best results, but getting there.
Hi there. Why is the Monitor/EVF solution not optimal? What do you wish it had instead?
Looks like it's too close. With a magic arm it could be placed at a more comfortable distance, but then the mattebox would have to be farther out which might not work. He could place it above the handle, but then peripheral vision would take a hit. Just a guess based on how he had to lean back to see the monitor.
When I see these rigs, it always bulks up the camera, which no doubt looks impressive and I can definitely see how it would impress a client. BUT....... I shoot music videos on a C100 MkII, and I, myself being a hand-held, run-and-gun type of cameraman, wouldn't be able to do half of the things I do if I had all that extra bulk on my camera. I mean, be honest......... all of that stuff arguably really doesn't do anything other than make the camera look extra fancy in my opinion. Nice video though. I gave it a like!
thanks for the like and comment! You know most of the time I dont even use my rig that often. Most of my work I do handheld too and love the flexibility I have that way. But for me a proper shoulder rig is something really useful if you know that you will have to shoot for a long period of time and have to mound external recorder and other stuff that makes the camera heavier. I get alot of pain in the wrists and my back when holding the c100 handheld. And this is something that we as filmmaker should pay attention to. I heard of alot of filmmakers who have problems with their back when they get older. And that's no fun.
And If I need a lighter shoulder rig I can still remove the mattebox, follow focus and monitor. That is all stuff that one does not really need... And yes, clients love to see matteboxes and big cameras haha.
Yes I agree about the shoulder rig though when shooting for long periods of time. I can definitely see how some of these things can be useful. But for the way I use my cam, it's just not for me.
That's exactly why I am looking into rigging solutions right now. Been shooting handheld with the c100 on a couple of gigs now and the stress on my back is no joke. I'd like to rig it up as you do, placing the camera body above the shoulder but since I have no external monitor I probably have to push the camera forward a bit and use counterweights to compensate. your video gave me some inspiration for my own rigging. thanks!
Hey, wanted to ask you about shooting purely handheld with the c100. Can you rely only on the lens's IS? How's the footage? thank you!
So true -- physical health is usually one of the last things on people's minds despite this is an incredibly physically demanding job. Lots of people leave the profession, not by choice, but because they physically cannot do it anymore. The psychological effects of becoming physically disabled should not be taken lightly. Take care of yourselves -- art takes sacrifice, but your healthy should be the last thing thrown into the fire.
You mention " I wish I would have invested in a better baseplate and for a few hundred dollars you can get a nice grip relocator too." Do you have any specific recommendations for what you'd buy instead? Thanks!
Every Baseplate that is adjustable (for centering the camera over the shouler) is a better option than the simple small rig baseplate. For example something like the Camtree Dovetail Plate Baseplate. Or any plate that has a tripod baseplate integrated so that you can unplug the camera with the hole rig from the tripod at any times. But the rig I build in this video is a good solution when you dont need to use a tripod and just need more support to hold your camera for a long time. If you find any other solutions please let me know! : )
Oh and for the grip relocator I would suggest getting the Shape relocator with the hands quick handle. But it was just a bit too expensive for me at that time. Another good and affordable option is the handgrip relocator from wooden camera. But you will only get the relocator so you have to buy a seperate extensionarm. Zacutos relocator is only useful if you invest in their system. Their relocator has its own connection and cannot be used with a standart rosette mount.
Hi. Thanks for the highly educational video. I am thinking of build the same rig. Just one question though, do you need two handles or just one? Cheers
I think just one handle could work, but holding the rig with just one arm is too unbalanced in my opinion. And holding the camera with the left hand for support will be tiresome too. But you could also try it with one handle and see if it works for you and then buy the second handle if you need it.
What about a handle re locater
I have yet to find one that isn’t absurdly overpriced
you have such a nice videos = )
(haha I am you're 90 sub = ))
Awesome! Really appreciate it! : ) I want to do more youtube videos in the future. I am working on some tutorials. Hopefully will post soon : )
Can you view that monitor that close to your face without going cross eyed?
You do realize that you need a donut ring or "nun's knickers" (black out fabric) between the rear of the matte box and the front of the lens, right? I mean, without it, light leaks make that rig useless. Unless you like light leaks all over your footage.
Looks so uncomfortable, not a proper shoulder cam, too much front weight.
Yeah... its a bit too front heavy. I will slowly add extension arms and counterweight to it someday... Btw great stuff on your channel! I've been vegan since 2014. Would love to use my skills for activism as well. Keep up the good work!
Thanks man, are you in Los Angeles by any chance?
unfortunately not. I live in germany.
Would you be interested in shooting there for our channel?
Terrible. My eyes would be strained trying to view that small of a monitor that close to my face.
pointless rig lol, it actually defeats the purpose of the c100
You’re an idiot
