There must be someone out there genius enough to put eye-tracking AF on a Canon C100 mark2, and I'm not talking about EF-S consumer lenses. I mean the big 1.2 lenses.
I remember magic lantern team were threatened legally by canon if they cracked the C line of cameras. Team ML knew they could, but wouldn't. I can't imagine what this camera is capable of considering it uses the same sensor as the original 300 and 500
Have you looked into those Lidars that pull focus with external motors? It may not be eye tracking, but are supposed to be decent subject tracking or maybe even face tracking.
The c100 is a wonderful Camera. I saved for a year to get one. The one I got I was able to send it to Canon and they were able to update it to Dual Pixel autofocus. It has been awesome since. I am saving up to get another one.

I have, and love the original C300, i still use it from 2015 and i will be using it for few years more.
I have 3 C100mkii's and a bunch of f2.8 L series lenses and love the image coming from them. Yep, it would also make me very happy to have eye tracking, even person or object tracking on the C100's... I shoot interviews with artists which doesn't need it too much unless you have a hyperactive subject...but I also do events (art exhibition openings, artmaking events) and opera and symphony orchestra multicam coverage and I also sometimes cover rock band concerts...for opera and rock band concerts in particular tracking would be a boon! For interviews and shooting myself it could be handy to have 4k so I could reframe if I wanted to on a 1080p timeline.
I’ve filmed numerous videos and a few feature length documentaries using my trusty c100 (mark I) and it’s still my favorite camera to film with. Every time I think about upgrading (looking at you Blackmagic 6K Pro), I always find a reason to continue using my c100. Like you Markus, I don’t need 4K/6K and just love using old gear due to the costs (I’m frugal/cheap) and look these cameras provide.
Some good points Markus - Funny I own this workhorse camera (C100) and love it, but the thing that bothers me is not lack of eye or face tracking (except on some select EFs lenses), but the fact that you can't you can't move the focus point! If I could move the focus point with the joy stick I'd be a happy camper! The hack I'd really prefer is a option to be able to record 4K (since it has a 4K sensor!) even if only in 8-bit 4.2.0. You also make good point of the look of faces with this camera - hard for me to badmouth it, but it has it's quirks - as does every camera on the planet !
Yeah I know, it's center focus or nothing lol. Even then, if you stay in the middle, just leaning forward and back makes it lose you. Sometimes it just goes out of focus for no reason, just cause it gets bored and doesn't like to stay in one place very long. 😬
I saw how at any moment those lenses would fall off the table!!! Good thought. I have an R5 and the C100 II and I think that the C100, despite being about 8 years older, gives you better skin tones. Now, I feel that if you move little, the AF is quite decent or simply using it in manual, for sitting and talking it is perfect. For me it is the perfect second camera, it doesn't add many GB of material, the look is super customizable so you can pair it with any camera and it is cheap nowadays and so you don't spend so much money on a second body that you will use very occasionally. When you leave it on a tripod, give it rec and it can record for hours, without worrying that it will cut off after half an hour, and the audio is impeccable, it has very good limiters.
Markus! I wish I could show you the images I’ve managed to pull out of the GX85… you’d be proud and it’s become my carry around camera vs the G9 for shooting unobtrusively around town here in Vegas where security is always tight.
Markus, DJI's 3D Focus is one way to handle this issue, but that would limit your lateral range of movement in the frame. Another option, I am currently working on a custom dual follow focus system based on the Zhiyun Crane 2 focus motor. I am targeting zoom+focus and taking lens+anamorphic adapter focus with this project. I got the idea from Jack T. on youtube, he controls his Crane 2 FF motor via a smartphone app he developed. Now, a determined app developer could extend the app to use the smartphone's autofocus/depth mapping capabilities to detect, track and focus on your face, and then feed the focus setting to a calibrated follow focus motor. Implementing face tracking would be much easier on iOS/Android than inside a firmware hack.
Thanks for this video. How do you consider the value of the C100 II on the used market? What's the best camera to get for a documentary at that price range?
Depends who you're shopping it to and what their requirements are. You can make a documentary with a pocket camera or a ten thousand dollar camcorder. Believe it or not, more important than the camera is the audio quality. I have a whole audio series on this channel. Here's the first one showing how good audio with a cheap camera is better than an expensive camera with poor audio ua-cam.com/video/yQOHtUwa60g/v-deo.html
Markus, have you tried a 77d or 90d? They are apsc ef mount 1080p with phase detect autofocus. I own a 77d (which I’m selling) but it just has face autofocus. The 90d has eye autofocus. Not sure if the codec and bit rate is what you’re after though?
i don't understand a thing, does the c100 mk2 control an external motor to focus those beautiful manual cine lenses? i'd suggest dji lidar to have reliable autofocus, but you have to put the setup on a rs3 pro with proper lidar kit sold separately. i don't know if you can use lidar without the gimbal somehow
Sorry Markus, but from what I found the only way to use face detection autofocus on the c100ii is to use a list of specific zoom lenses which were comparable at the time. Here is all the ones I found that work hope this helps! -EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM - EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS STM - EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM - EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM - EF-S 10-18mm F4.5-5.6 IS STM (this list was made on a forum in 2018 so I wouldn’t hope for new comparable glass)
Those are cheap consumer lenses. Like I said in the video, I have f1.2 L-series lenses that I want to use. They work fine with face tracking on a Canon 70D which came out a year earlier but not on the C100 II which makes no sense.
Have you tried the C200? You could just use the 1080p on that and it would pretty much look the same as the C100 (to my limited knowledge) with eye tracking instead.
Hi Markus, I have 3 - C100 mII Cameras that I use weekly to record lectures, interviews and college courses. I have used Canon Cine Glass but they have limitations in regards to auto focus and none of them use face AF. Now, with the latest Firmware Version 1.0.4.1.00 helps a bit with those lenses and fixes the issue with the aperture adjustment on EF70-200 2.8L. This Cine Camera only has 4 focus modes. Manual - One Shot- Continuous and Face AF. Unfortunately the Face AF only works on EF-S lenses. If you go into the C100 mII operations manual to page 207 labeled "compatible lenses and functions," you will see the entire list of lenses and their options. I use the last EF-S on the list with the PTZ zoom motor and it works great. The Face AF works great for my guest speakers always moving around on stage. I love these cameras and the color they give me and so does the College. I shoot in 1080 and upscale to 4K no problem! I can use Clog internal, Owl Color or 10.4.2.2 via Ninja V. Outside of that, I've looked into the DJI LiDAR for focus with Cine Glass and it does look promising but it still a bit from being ready for prosumer testing... Love your wisdom and your channels! Thank you for sharing it with all of us! Blessings!
Also, if you are operating the C100mkII, it is absolutely possible to use the Dual Pixel AF more or less continuously. You can't just leave it on. You have to map the AF Lock function to a button, and then intelligently turn the AF on and off as you subtly point the center box where you need to to re-focus occasionally. Now if you want to film yourself (with no one operating the C100) you can't just leave the continuous AF on sadly. There should still be ways to set it so you're in focus, but not razor-thin eye tracking.
I bought the original c100 a couple years ago based on your recommendations in one of the marcuspix videos. I got it for a little more than a grand, still think it a good choice, I am a one man band and so deal with tracking, but most of the time the camera is locked down so not a problem
C200 price has gone down quite a bit and has face tracking and object tracking. Looks just as good or even slightly better than the C100 Mark II in my opinion.
Have you ever tried a LIDAR focusing system to attach to your camera? One of the most talked about is the DJI RS 3 LIDAR and I think Canon has one too, it's just a tad bigger than an external flash trigger but could be what you are looking for. I don't have one yet and I don't have any personal experience but I'm hoping this could be on not to distant future list of things to play with. The only catch is you have to have a lens with a manual focus mode and cog wheel for the LIDAR system to turn. Hope you find what you are looking for in the comments.
What about putting C100 II color profile/processing on another camera with eye-AF? Might be more realistic due to processing power requirements, which most likely is beyond the hardware of the older Canon.
Plan “B” if you have an old camera to salvage that eye focus works. Connect two wires to the focus motor and then connect them to the C100 focus input. That camera had a manual control to be operated by a second person. Not having the c100 you may have to build a amplifier to match the motors impedance . You still have to have two cameras one to focus the C100 to record. My Canon ELPH 360 focus for video at short range. I bought 2 at Walmart for $35.00 each. These cameras are small even the C100 is cramped. But it after watching Potato Jet it just takes two to operate for use. Have you tried what Casey Neistat used sunglasses. Your videos are in focus but you need to look into the camera more and shorten your closeups distance. Good luck taking a camera apart. I know you have the diy skills. I still have camcorders from 2001 that still work. Software updates from other Canon cameras from the same year might be compatible but upgrades in processor and memory mapping may not fit from newer cameras.
You probably already know, but there is a firmware update when using continuous AF option that has gotten a lot of good reviews. It's not eye detect, just face detect but only with EF-S lenses.
I own a C100 and the face detection is a joke that's marginal at best and only works with certain EFs lenses -WTF? - but I understand - it was 2015 technology.
I know. If they can make it work with cheap STM lenses, why not the expensive L-series? You'd think the pro lenses would have face detection and not the consumer ones
@@MarkusPix The only issue we have with our C100mk2 is focus, but it remains the best camera for us. The image is ideal for live streaming directly from the camera, and the recorded file size is appropriate for archiving. Initially, we thought the C200 would be a better option, so we bought two. While the focus is indeed better on the C200, everything else has been problematic.
Cant a DJI LiDAR Range Finder be any of use? I think Iv seen a video on UA-cam where they used it to modify a non-dji camera to better focus... Could be wrong though🤔
Yes I do. I work in computer-vision. I also have a friend that works as a programmer in the canon lense department..It's an interesting project. I know those cameras and have spare lenses. What is the way to contact you once I have it working?
I love my C100 MkII I've really wanted to pick up another or two, but I've just had to deal with only having the one. But I've never really felt the autofocus was too bad. However, I'm not exactly sure what you're shooting and my style is definitely a bit more documentary. I do shoot a lot of athletics (daughter's in drill team) so there's a lot of fast movement and I've never really felt it was too bad. I primarily use a 28-135 f/4, a 24-70 f/2.8 or a 70-200 f/2.8. So I've not really had experience using other lenses with it. I agree that the image quality on this camera is outstanding and that's why I've not bothered to upgrade. Black Magic cameras are nice too, but again...I don't really need 4K and if I ever do need to capture that, I use my 1DX mkII for that. But I prefer to shoot with cinema or camcorders vs DSLR cameras.
@@aurelborcosphotography398 It's just such a good camera. And although I've shot footage with a Sony A7iii and do genially enjoy that quality of that camera, I still prefer the image quality of the C100 most of the time.
Keep scanning eBay. I just bought my 2nd c100m2 for $800 and free shipping! Includes side grip and audio top handle. Just happened to bid when no one else was.
Philip Bloom made a video on how to use the auto focus with one of the Canon C cameras I think it was the first model. I think he programmed one of the buttons to only use auto focus when he hit it. I would check his UA-cam and if its not there it should be on his blog. I know he was uploading to Vimeo before but that site really changed their business model and the film making community left Vimeo and jumped ship to UA-cam.
Never messed with a cinema camera. Wish I could help yah out. Surprised the R5C wasnt a good one for yah. Any new R5, 6 or 6II or r5c would be nice. but i dont know anything about video. I just like stills shooting. I will look around and see if anyone has anything out there.
Spent a lot of time with the C100 mkii - what a workhorse. Love the look as well. I think the only lenses that support face tracking(I know, not eye) are: -EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM - EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS STM - EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM - EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM - EF-S 10-18mm F4.5-5.6 IS STM All consumer grade lenses for sure.
@@boahandarrowsproductions4326 I think it’s the STM motor tech that allows it to work. BTW love that that 17-55 2.8-great run and gun lens for the C100!
You mighf want to try a Canon 7D mark II. I have a mark I that shoots really good 1089p (over sample 2K) but does not have good auto focus. The mark II has a much better auto focus. Not sure if will do what you want but might be worth a try. I do like the C100 but I consider it a manual focus camera. Good luck finding a hack for it. Let us know if you do.
As a professional programmer I am afraid to tell you that adding eye detection functionality to the program running on Canon's firmware is certainly not trivial. In fact I would say that it is practically impossible for anyone outside the responsible Canon development team. And not only that. The costs would probably exceed even your budget. But I do sympathize. Unfortunately, I myself also have a few pieces of hardware that I really would like to revitalize with new software. However today's progress is so fast that most electronic products become outdated before you can even buy them. In spite of software being updatable, this tendency to obsoletion also applies to the quite complicated software "clockwork" running inside. The dev team has dispersed and the dev tools they used at the time have already been succeeded. Nevertheless, Happy Christmas.
Difficult to imagine even with the source code. "Hack" is doing a massive amount of work here, more even than in movies and tv shows where it's already carryiing impossible burdens.
I do not know how it compares to the c100, but the old regular EOS-R was supposed to be good with 1080p (so much that people would upscale the 1080p footage to 4k and it was hard to tell the difference). I have both the EOSR and an R5, but I do photos (I haven't really touched any video at all). That said the eye tracking in the r5 is a lot better than the r...
Strange. Literally taking mine to Canon today to get it checked out. Won’t power on with any battery. Tried multiple. But works via AC Mains power. Still love mine despite 1080p. Paired with sigma 35mm F4. Anyone else experienced this?
@@MarkusPix lol I was just going to suggest the Canon 35mm 2.8 stm lens with face auto focus. It’s not on the list but works but works with the face detect.
I would say the closest you would get is the canon 5d iv. 1080p with dual pixal continuous auto focus. I don't think it's as accurate as eye af but its probably the last camera canon made that was 1080p with decent auto focus
I’ve been thinking about making the jump to the C100 MK ii. I run a XF400 and a M50. But I find myself using the XF400 more. It’s just plain easier to film as a one man film crew.
I left a post on another pretty recent upload: Markus, you GOTTA look on ebay for the Aurora model kit of The Black Knight Of Nurnberg. The cover art is YOU.
Markus its worth ditching them for the Canon C70. Has all the same features (+ much more) as the C100 but smaller with eye tracking autofocus. I just used the C70 for my short film. Posted the trailer today and the results from C70 is incredible.
@@MarkusPix it has the same super 35 sensor. The Rec 709 looks a tad different in the color curve compared to c100 but the difference is negligible. What’s your biggest hold out for 4k? File sizes?
@@TimeKillersAddendum... I THINK Markus's "hold out" is a frustration with the industry's CONSTANT pressure to push "consumers" to buy the latest resolution sensors when it is shown over and over again that viewers can't tell the difference between 1080 and 4K on a 4K screen. He has 3 cameras that he otherwise loves and, like me and others, gets miffed when pushed to trade up and learn something new and, basically, trash something that's not worn out. It's not a matter of if he can afford it, it is the constant pressure to throw away good money. ua-cam.com/video/_x-u8mUSFss/v-deo.html
@@christophergrove4876 to me a see a large noticeable difference on my iMac and tv. But being a filmmaker I’m looking for the differences too. Markus can comfortably afford 4k and beyond.
I have one too! I use a Canon 17-55mm 2.8 on it and it does autofocus well, just focuses in the center of the frame. I thought about buying a better lens, but I think I might have the best one. But yes, certain EFS lenses use eye AF - the 10-18mm, the 18-55mm, and the 55-250mm. I know those lenses aren't bright, but there is eye AF. It sure seems like a cripple hammer move, as I can't think of a good reason eye AF wouldn't be possible on the L glass.
How can one change the "non user changeable" internal battery on the Canon C300 and probably also the Canon 100 original? The mark 2 has a battery the user can change. I'd rather save the $150 Canon wants apparently. Yes some save their settings on a card and skip the 2 year battery changes.
I had to hack mine.. the lens release button didn't work. I had to pry the button out and now I insert a tiny screwdriver into the hole the screw comes up through and just to the side of the screw itself then I push down and the lens releases. There are other vids on youtube with people with the same problem but what they go through to fix it is much harder and not even needed. I won't even actually fix it by gluing the other part of the screw into the button and reassemble. Works fine with the small screwdriver or even a toothpicks works. But yeah some people take a whole lens apart to get to the insides to release it and it is a TON of work.
I just “down graded” by buying 2 more 5D Mk IV cameras. I too found the older 1080p down sampled video superb. And, I like the full frame versus my C200. Just couldn’t see upgrading to 3 C500s! If my client demands 4K…well…that is why I have Topaz AI - LOL!
The trick maybe in finding someone who is an expert on repairing and refurbishing lenses. Can a Canon 18-135mm STM be refurbished with higher grade commercial photography glass, fixed aperture, and still have the STM/IS, autofocus facial lock.
Markus, i cant help you with your problem, but i would love your opinion: what is the smallest, tiniest flash i can add to my a7c? Upgraded from an a6000 but i miss how handy the on camera flash was! Doesnt have to be great, just small and works with full frame sony. Happy holidays friend
Hey Markus, sorry to here about your struggles. If you don’t get the help your asking for and your ready to move on I’d buy the camera from you for $2000 Canadian. I’m looking to buy one and I don’t need/want amazing autofocus. I’d even consider a c200 for $3000-3500cad.
Well, I know I can't solve your firmware problem but being, or having been a user of the C100 Mk2 myself I sure remember the camera's AF worked as well, or almost as well as the Canon's groundbreaking video AF of the consumer 70D and 80D that I also used to shoot video with. The key is the lens. I would say for the C100 Mk2's AF algorithm the only lenses that are considered good enough (at least for me) for autofocus video work are maybe a few STM designated lenses. Regular Canon AF lenses, L-series or otherwise just wouldn't cut it when it comes to video AF. First, they are not really silent. And the starting and ending of the autofocus action makes a fainted, "thud" noise that though may not be loud but in quiet environment would be recorded by any mic mounted on the handle of the camera. Also the focus transition would not be smooth and the resulting slow but still snap-on, snap-off effect that is harmless in still photography would ruin your footage. Try getting either the cheapo 18-135mm or the 18-55mm EF-S STM to see if the AF is acceptable for you. Optically they aren't great but for even my commercial grade work, I could easily learn to shoot around their flaws. They each cost only a few bucks these days but I am not sure about other STM labeled lenses as those two were the ones I mostly used back in the days. Have a good shooting. I am a camcorder fan too and I like most of your videos.
Yes I have some STM lenses, they're oh-kaaaay, but nothing like L-series. What I don't understand is the 70D has great AF with L-series and it came out a whole year before the C100 II which is more professional and can't handle pro lenses wtf
These lenses do face tracking with the C100 MKII EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS STM EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM EF-S 10-18mm F4.5-5.6 IS STM I know, not the best, but I use the 55-250 on a 7D to shoot my grandson's soccer games at 8fps. Have you contacted the people who worked on Magic Lantern & other Canon firmware hacks? The firmware developers are far more likely to know the type of hardware hackers who 'fuzzed' the original Mk2's etc. Also how far are you willing to go. If a firmware developer put you in touch with a hardware hacker would you be willing to sacrifice a camera? For example one of the first steps to finding a way in to a systems firmware is to wirewrap/solder on a Jtag connector. (See below for link to wikipedia) or another is building a pogo pin interface connector. With both the aim is of accessing the in production testing systems, the engineering/service systems and left over prototype code that has been screened out from end (l)user use. That sort of thing shouldn't damage the hardware. However if that doesn't work the next more aggressive stage is fuzzing the hardware. The problem is that this can 'brick' the hardware. It might be recoverable from or it might be an insurance claim or not. Then there is taking the camera apart and building a hardware specification & looking for third party chips with known exploits. The question is how far are you willing to go Links to Wikipedia below:
I wish I could contribute something to help you for as much as you give to everyone but I don't think there is such a solution for that camera. Best option to use those lenses and get what you want is another body. You mentioned the R5C but the negative thing you had to say about it is that it had too many bells and whistles. I own that camera and I think you would be happy with its autofocus. I think you should take some time to learn it if that was your only complaint about it. I'm a moron compared to your talents and even I can learn it. It's much smaller and compact and takes amazing photographs as well, which I think you would also benefit from. There are rumors of the R5 mark 2 coming out next year which might be a good option if you don't mind waiting but I still think the R5C would be a perfect fit for your needs if you just take some time to really get familiar with it. Unfortunately I just don't think someone making their own custom firmware will happen. I know it's not what you wanted to hear but I really think it's the best option. There is also something else you can do if you are dead set on that body but it's not simple like a custom firmware and it has to do with lidar. Recently lidar tech has been coming out to the consumers that let you attach them to manual focus cinema lenses to give you a fantastic autofocus experience but currently DJI has one that does require one of their gimbals, supposedly a future firmware update will allow you to use it without a gimbal but who knows when that will be. If you are interested in this search up "DJI LiDAR Range Finder" on B&H or UA-cam to learn more about it. It will add more bulk to the camera but it would allow you to get a far superior autofocus out of your existing gear. None of these solutions check all your boxes but they do get you what you need at a cost, which unfortunately is how things always tend to be. Again, R5C seems like less of a hassle but the Lidar does sound awesome. If I had the cash for it also I would love to try it out on some vintage canon lenses but it may be a cool experiment for you to at least try out. Also, if you go with the dji lidar option and use the gimbal, you can take advance of the extra benefits of the gimbal. You can setup the gimbal on a tripod or surface and even do full tracking with the gimbal panning left and right as you move which would be pretty useful. I hope this at least gives you a little to consider. Thanks again for everything you do and happy holidays!
Sorry Mr. Markus.. wouldn't even know where to start. I'm battling right now over what to purchase to get 900-1000 fps (that won't cost an arm and a leg). Wish you success in your quest!
@@MarkusPix Appreciate that suggestion. I was looking at the Sony Camcorder version the FDR-AX700 4K HDR). I don't believe I've seen any of your reviews and tips on it. But I do recall your saying that Camcorders were better for heat, Battery-life, etc. So was keeping that in mind.

Computer engineer here. Upgrading the 8 year old hardware with more functional software/firmware is like running windows 10 on 8-10 year old hardware. It might be possible, but I doubt you'd like the outcome.
I am running win10 on a Fujitsu workstation from 2014 flawlessly and before that on self build from 2010... I haven’t bothered hacking win11 on it yet... his problem I guess isn’t hardware compatibility but lack of hardware, the latest sensors have a percentage of “extra” pixels dedicated to autofocus and extra processing power and even extra chips for handling all the data for Ai autofocus stuff.

The M50 both 1 and II look like 720p footage thats been oversharpened to compensate. I spent weeks shooting side by said and they didn't even come close to Sony. I WANTED to like the Canons because of their small size and ergonomics, but alas
Unfortunately to my knowledge Canon only allowed the more advanced autofocus of the C100 (advanced as in better, no tracking features) and C100 II (face tracking, not eye) with a specific set of EF-S zoom lenses. No full frame lenses and no primes.
I remember magic lantern team were threatened legally by canon if they cracked the C line of cameras. Team ML knew they could, but wouldn't. I can't imagine what this camera is capable of considering it uses the same sensor as the original 300 and 500

Can you use a soft focus filter on the front of your lenses with your newer model cameras if the video details are to sharp?
There is an option for face tracking in the menu, which works with EF-S lenses. See page 76 of the user manual.
Only with trash lenses. not all of them.
@@MarkusPix I use one-shot focus 90% of the time for that reason - just not reliable and sluggish autofocus
Implementing face tracking would be much easier on iOS/Android than inside a firmware hack.
i'm interested in this! can you share some more informations/links? thansk!
Hadn't heard of this camera before but looking on UA-cam, it certainly does produce some very nice cinematic footage!
Not sure if the codec
and bit rate is what you’re after though?
what about using the dji lidar focus system. it won't be eye tracking but it would be great auto focus
i don't understand a thing, does the c100 mk2 control an external motor to focus those beautiful manual cine lenses? i'd suggest dji lidar to have reliable autofocus, but you have to put the setup on a rs3 pro with proper lidar kit sold separately. i don't know if you can use lidar without the gimbal somehow
Sorry Markus, but from what I found the only way to use face detection autofocus on the c100ii is to use a list of specific zoom lenses which were comparable at the time. Here is all the ones I found that work hope this helps!
-EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM
- EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS STM
- EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM
- EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM
- EF-S 10-18mm F4.5-5.6 IS STM
(this list was made on a forum in 2018 so I wouldn’t hope for new comparable glass)
Ben, I have tried canon 18-55mm STM lens on it, it follows face movement. 👍
Those are cheap consumer lenses. Like I said in the video, I have f1.2 L-series lenses that I want to use. They work fine with face tracking on a Canon 70D which came out a year earlier but not on the C100 II which makes no sense.
These track pretty good but they are rubbish quality regarding DOF
Still such an awesome camera
Good Luck on the Software/Firmware Hack!
I wonder how the DJI’s “3D” autofocus they add to the gimbals compares?
Blessings!
hi! can you list the ptz lenses you're talking about? i'd like to try a face tracking option sometime
@@ephemere82The lens is the EF-S 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. You can add the PZ-E1 Powerzoom unit which is available only for this lens.
With you on the look out of the C100. I'm not a video guy at all but I do love the image off of these.
You can use the lydar autofocus sytem from DJI. Do you know which I am talking about?
I bought the original c100 a couple years ago based on your recommendations in one of the marcuspix videos. I got it for a little more than a grand, still think it a good choice, I am a one man band and so deal with tracking, but most of the time the camera is locked down so not a problem
C200 price has gone down quite a bit and has face tracking and object tracking. Looks just as good or even slightly better than the C100 Mark II in my opinion.
facts
Have you ever tried a LIDAR focusing system to attach to your camera? One of the most talked about is the DJI RS 3 LIDAR and I think Canon has one too, it's just a tad bigger than an external flash trigger but could be what you are looking for. I don't have one yet and I don't have any personal experience but I'm hoping this could be on not to distant future list of things to play with. The only catch is you have to have a lens with a manual focus mode and cog wheel for the LIDAR system to turn. Hope you find what you are looking for in the comments.
Happy Holidays
What about putting C100 II color profile/processing on another camera with eye-AF? Might be more realistic due to processing power requirements, which most likely is beyond the hardware of the older Canon.
Maybe try the C300 mkII? Or the C200, they should have very similar sensors.
It's not eye detect, just face detect but only with EF-S lenses.
that only works for consumer zooms, not the 1.2 lenses I have
@@MarkusPix You're way better connected than we are. If you don't know who's doing work like this...
Would Cannon have a person in customer support that may know?
That table is making me nervous LOL
Is there any chance that one of those Lidar devices that have been popping up lately could make the experience any better?
Maybe even that focus puller app for iphone.
Yes I do. I work in computer-vision. I also have a friend that works as a programmer in the canon lense department..It's an interesting project. I know those cameras and have spare lenses. What is the way to contact you once I have it working?
You can email freestuff@markuspix.com , disregard the auto response
yeah I still like the oversampled 1080 from the c100 best.
Nice Dream *Markus* Cool looking batch of cameras. I hope that Santa comes through with your software Hack that you are looking for.
Likewise, I have a Canon C 100 Mark II and Canon 1DX Mark II, I am very satisfied.
As lenses I use Sigma 17 - 70mm, f/2.8 - 4, Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L II USM

I think the only lenses that support face tracking(I know, not eye) are:

- EF-S 55-250mm F4-5.6 IS STM
- EF-S 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS STM

You mighf want to try a Canon 7D mark II. I have a mark I that shoots really good 1089p (over sample 2K) but does not have good auto focus. The mark II has a much better auto focus. Not sure if will do what you want but might be worth a try. I do like the C100 but I consider it a manual focus camera. Good luck finding a hack for it. Let us know if you do.
there is lidar auto focus its expensive but can focus any lens any camera

I'm sure it looks great in 4K because that's what it's designed for, but what's the 1080 like?

Hey, I'm thinking about buying this lens too. Have you tried enabling face detection in the settings? Is it not allowed? Thanks!
@@tamasd8 Yes, it doesn't work.

Super bro
I just “down graded” by buying 2 more 5D Mk IV cameras. I too found the older 1080p down sampled video superb. And, I like the full frame versus my C200. Just couldn’t see upgrading to 3 C500s! If my client demands 4K…well…that is why I have Topaz AI - LOL!
Can i still get this in 2024 and hoe does it work on the black skintone
Works great no matter what skin tone, you just need more light

@@MarkusPix did tou try more recent and better STM lenses from canon? like the new FF zoom and primes? maybe they work only with stepped motors?

The question is how far are you willing to go

My little RX100vii can do 960 fps in short spurts
@@MarkusPix Appreciate that suggestion. I was looking at the Sony Camcorder version the FDR-AX700 4K HDR). I don't believe I've seen any of your reviews and tips on it. But I do recall your saying that Camcorders were better for heat, Battery-life, etc. So was keeping that in mind.
I've seen people use Canon STM Lenses that do face tracking on c100Mii
yes but they are nowhere the quality of f1.2 L-series lenses
@@MarkusPix ooops you has that right in your title, I see that the canon 35 2., or any Canon 50MM sim lens will give you face tracking. That seems like your best bet
Would magic lantern do it.
Computer engineer here. Upgrading the 8 year old hardware with more functional software/firmware is like running windows 10 on 8-10 year old hardware. It might be possible, but I doubt you'd like the outcome.
The intellectual property issues just add to the fun.
Hello sir how are you thank you so much every camera in share in knowledge in light good sir I am so happy in this camera in look for scan thank you so much sir
Markus???? I know YOU'RE the pro, BUT, I always thought the 1080 on the M50 looked GREAT!? No? Over sharpened? Yes! but, can't you use the adapter ef-m mount and still use those amazing lenses?
Bo
The M50 both 1 and II look like 720p footage thats been oversharpened to compensate. I spent weeks shooting side by said and they didn't even come close to Sony. I WANTED to like the Canons because of their small size and ergonomics, but alas
@@MarkusPixWow....That means I need to buy a Sony
Unfortunately to my knowledge Canon only allowed the more advanced autofocus of the C100 (advanced as in better, no tracking features) and C100 II (face tracking, not eye) with a specific set of EF-S zoom lenses.
No full frame lenses and no primes.
