I just finished testing your profile and I can honestly say, this has been one of the absolute best purchases I have ever done, you literally turn my C100 mark II into a whole different beast, the colours you show really do come straight out of camera like that, I was hesistant at first but man, I can´t thank you enough brother, thank you very much, you really are all that and a bag of chips brother, thanks.
I just bought the colour profile and tried to load it onto my C100MK1 and noticed that I can't load it despite putting in into the correct folder. Is there a way to get it loaded onto my MK1?
hello! What about color space? How to deal with it in DaVinci Resolve? I found out that changing it from classic Clog to rec709 isn't quite accurate, especially red-wise, so now im doin some funky Arri hybrid (as I found it the closest colorwise), is there an official OWL workflow? Great profile btw
I was playing around with the OwlBot profile last night with a fixed lighting setup indoors, comparing it to WDR. What I noticed is the waveform dropped from roughly 70% to 40% when switching to OwlBot with the same lighting; about the same as engaging the first level of ND on the C100ii. I'd never done it in controlled lighting before; most of my use has been outdoors when light was abundant and I was wishing I had ND10 on this old camera! Does the profile reduce your low light end result, or does it all come out in the wash after you grade? Any comments or other pieces you can point me to for grading the OwlBot on the C100ii?
So essentially what’s happening is the image with WDR is kind of artificially stretched out. If you look at the waveform there’s gaps throughout it. OWLCOLOR doesn’t start with a base of WDR but is designed so that there isn’t any data loss like that which kinda does “press” the image down a bit. However all the data is “good data” so yeah, you’re set up to bring it up if need be in post and it should look fine.
@@Owlbot just to be clear, do we still want to shoot for a 70% waveform on skin? Also, did you typically use waveform for exposure or 70% zebra, or something else when using Owlbot profile?
@@InventorAndCurious Yeah I think I still aim for 60-70 on skin (I'd Zebra that range and get skin there) but honestly what I remember from shooting with that camera almost every day was I would kinda eyeball it haha. I'd like... expose till the image would break apart and then pull it back a few notches and hit record.
@@InventorAndCurious haha that's very kind, but I was at that time shooting almost every day and editing/coloring it all myself so I think I just had a rhythm to it. That's why my suggestion is always to run tests and find what you like! OWLCOLOR was primarily developed as a technical fix not a creative one.
I been shooting with the owl bot profile and makes a huge improvement on the c100 mark 2 skin tones. I notice the c100 lacks accuracy with colors. Does anybody experience color shifting, like a blue or green tint on footage? and some advice !! thank you
I just started using the OWLCOLOUR profile recently and when you look at the C-Log next to it the green tint you mentioned stands out a mile! I suppose having never really compared the raw footage to anything else I just got used to shooting with it. Though after seeing how much better the OWL profile is it's a no brainer!
Hey Kenny, I bought a C100 II after watching ur videos, i love ur style and colors.... and i wanna get the OWLCOLOR , the questions i have is that ,if im using it for interview type videos, and my b cam is a canon 80D it will be impossible to match the colors ,right?, or you think it can be done?, even ifts 85-90% matched ill be happy
I honestly couldn't tell you, the only DLSR/M I've ever truly shot with is the XT-3. All of my experience is with cine cameras. I figure they'd be close enough, but I don't want to promise anything. Now, that being said, in Resolve I believe you could do it easily as I've matched all kinds of stuff with DaVinci relatively easily, all things considered.
It is a picture profile, instructions are in the zip! Basically you drop the folder on a formatted SD card, put it in the camera, CP menu, save from SD.
Hi just bought the color profile but I can’t seem to load it although I followed the instructions. When I get to the load from SD card part there is no owl bot option or any option for that matter
Just picked this up and can't wait to test it out! Do you have any guides on how to expose the c100mkii owl profile for best results? And any tips for low light scenarios (like color shifts at high ISOs)?
Have skin tones around 65IRE and never clip. Be sure to nail your WB. If you can't get the skin up there without clipping, favor not clipping because it's generally easy to bring up in post, unless the contrast is insane. A diffusion filter like a Black ProMist will help soften the transition from clipping though.
Dude, this is great! I appreciate your approach to shooting on the c100mkII.I look forward to trying out your picture profile! Thanks and happy New Year!

I am new to the cine cams. Just bought a C100 mark ii and am trying to learn how to get the best possible pic straight out of camera. I am going to use it for commercials, but want that cinematic look to it. I am wanting to get as close to the Alexa look to it as possible. Will your lut do that or help to get that, sounds like it should. I am currently using the Canon 24-105 f4 lens as that is all I can afford for the moment. Would appreciate all and any advice on settings for the C100 Thanks so much, you work is outstanding. Hope I can get there someday
So (not to hock my own shit but) the picture profile will help for sure, as far as getting a good look SOOC, but what you wanna focus on is LIGHTING and SOUND. Get some good mics, don't skimp there. Lights, as long as they're not low-quality (cheap lights can be high quality), can do you well. I'm writing an article about using regular household bulbs as film lights and I stand by it. Once you know how to use light, how light should look, and proper contrast ratios, you can use any light _source_ to make shit work. The C100mkII is just a C300 that saves to a worse codec, you've got a great image as long as what you put in front of the lens is well-crafted. EDIT: looking at your reel (is that you reel or just examples you like?), that shit looks great!! If you're worried about getting a better look, I think you'll be just fine where you're headed.
@@Owlbot Ya I definitely am going for the lut as it sounds like just what I am after. And I do agree with the importance of lighting. @@Owlbot no that is my reel... been working hard to learn as much from people like yourself that I admire to be able to create a look for a film like you all do. I feel like I am getting there but still know so little about so much..

@@Owlbot Just got the Sigma 18-35, after admiring your setup, and work. I'm really interested in your workflow using the C100 mk ii (settings), exposure (what you are looking for on a shoot), x rite color checker. Maybe a behind the scenes of a shot setup, and then post productions color grading and finally your lut applied? I'm sure that would be a pretty dramatic selling point for the lut :)
I honestly don't do much, it's kind of on autopilot. I just kind of shoot as bright as I can get it without blowing anything out (focusing on skintones, trying to get them around 60-70IRE), don't really use the color checker, and then color in Resolve (don't use any LUTs usually but sometimes I'll audition them just to see if they work for that particular scene). Usually I just use Color Space Transforms. The LUT included in this picture profile is kind of a one-off and it's not even for sale haha. Just comes with the Profile for fun. A big key is just lighting, and if you're shooting without them finding a way to put your subject in the best possible light available (usually backlit by the sun and maybe a reflector opposite the direction of the sun if you can get one in there)
Hey man, I'm sorry if you already mentioned it in the video, I might have missed it, what is this profile built off is it built off C-Log or WideDR? -they both have 12Stops of DR correct, the normal 709 profiles are around 10 stops DR, how many stops of DR would your profile offer? Much appreciated. Also, I really have been enjoying your videos!
It's based off of CLog, WideDR seemed to stretch the image out too much leading to banding. Essentially I turned CLog into a more workable SOOC image. I believe it is around 12 stops, yeah.

I just got your picture profile, I can´t wait to see it in action, hey, one quick question, it seems to get my camera a couple stops of light under though, is that supposed to be normal?
Essentially, yes. It'll look darker but it's "richer" data, basically. It's actually easier to recover if necessary since there's less rasterization than, say, the WideDR profile.
@@Owlbot I did just that and yeah, it seems you can recover so much so without damaging your picture, I don't know what magic went into this but you were right, that green tint is completely gone, I cant wait to give it a go in this coming wedding season mate

My question is - I'm using an external monitor with LUT support. Should I use the Portra LUT included to monitor or do you have a better suggestion for how to monitor the footage?
hey man glad to hear it! I honestly never used my C100 with an external monitor, so I always just went off the waveforms and used the image for framing and focus (and just a general sanity check) knowing that if I got the "data" it'd be fine, since I was for sure going to color it later
How does it perform under low light conditions regarding noise? A lot of people say Wide DR struggles in the dark and can produce some bad noise is the similar or just fine? Thanks!
Well being familiar with the C-series Canons was part of it, but the price/performance really got me. Full Frame (it's Monstro sized) 6K RAW in a package I already know that's super flexible, with a color science I'm familiar with was a big point. Canon tends to look more "beauty" to me whereas RED looks more "clinical", so that was another point. It felt like a direct upgrade and the closest RED setup would have been tens of thousands of dollars more. I do love the Dragon sensor (I mean they're all good but that's my favorite) but I just couldn't justify the price right now. Might add a Komodo to the kit depending on how that shakes out/if I can afford it in the future. There's another video on this channel about the C500 where I go in to it more.
Hello. Can you please make a step by step video on how to install owl bot picture profile on to Canon C100 AND C100 mark ii. I have C100 and about to purchase C100 mark ii. I am 63 years old and just started learning about filmmaking less than a year ago. When I read it or when someone says this is how to install owl bot to your C100, I am lost. I need to actually see how it's done. Please please make a video on how to install owl bots to C100. I'm sure many people want to see it. Thank you very much.
Like a monitoring LUT? No, you can just look at it as-is. I will say that my built-in monitor is starting to really show it's age and kinda fade/blow out as the day goes on so an external monitor might be smart if your cam is long in the tooth
I personally shoot AVCHD usually (just for the better audio) but there's not really a difference between the two as far as I'm aware. MP4 does afford you a higher bitrate though. Hilariously after 5 years I still haven't tested it 😂
this is great. If you have time, any tips to get the best look out this camera would be greatly appreciated. I still feel like I haven't managed to get the best look out of this cam
Shoot with really good glass (I swear by the Sigma 18-35mm for this cam), expose as bright as you can without blowing out, make sure it's lit WELL not just "exposed", move slowly, and learn Resolve if you can. The picture profile helps get the most "usable data" in your image and gets rid of the green cast in CLog as well. Basically. The rest is up to you!
I can't remember but these days I use a Neumann KM185. If it wasn't that it was probably an Oktava MK012. Oh and then yeah it's just some simple EQ really.
@@Owlbot Thanks! interesting My Davinci Resolve 17 sometimes stutters while scrubbing etc so I was transcoding it to DnxHD, or just use the Mp4. However I have a shoot coming that needs the audio so I need the AVCHD. thanks again
@@Refusetowalktheline Could be the footage isn't on a fast enough, separate drive (SSDs, preferably NVMe, are the way to go) or the connection is too slow (such as USB as opposed to M.2 or Thunderbolt or whatever) or your computer simply isn't up to the task. Yeah I have an Odyssey 7Q+ that I used a couple times but really for the C100 it only gives you a bit more info in the green channel (good for green screens) but practically on a day-to-day level it wasn't worth the added bulk for how little you would see improved. I do love the Dragon sensor (I mean they're all good but that's my favorite) but I just couldn't justify the price right now. Might add a Komodo to the kit depending on how that shakes out/if I can afford it in the future. There's another video on this channel about the C500 where I go in to it more.
OWL BOT thanks for the detailed reply.. I’ll surely check your C500 video.
OWL BOT i was about to ask you on the new Kommodos, its super attractive for its form factor and all that branding charm.
Yeah I mean I definitely want to get my hands on one to see if it lives up to the hype
Hello. Can you please make a step by step video on how to install owl
bot picture profile on to Canon C100 AND C100 mark ii. I have C100 and
about to purchase C100 mark ii. I am 63 years old and just started
learning about filmmaking less than a year ago. When I read it or when
someone says this is how to install owl bot to your C100, I am lost. I
need to actually see how it's done. Please please make a video on how to
install owl bots to C100. I'm sure many people want to see it. Thank
you very much.
Can external recorders pump up the features of this camera?
Not from what I've seen. External/internal look basically identical.
should i use view assist while shooting with owlcolor?
Like a monitoring LUT? No, you can just look at it as-is. I will say that my built-in monitor is starting to really show it's age and kinda fade/blow out as the day goes on so an external monitor might be smart if your cam is long in the tooth
Thanks for the reply. Yeah, just the regular view assist from the camera. I normally use it for c-log and works great. I just use the camera monitor.
I just purchased. It seems like you lose a couple stops of light when you use this color profile. Is it supposed to be this dark?
It's not actually "darker" per-se but the black level is lowered, yes. You're not losing any information, that's a feature not a bug haha
The sample footage at 4 minutes in, what filters did you have on the lens?
I can't remember but if I had to guess it was a 1/8 Black ProMist on the Sigma 18-35mm
OWL BOT thanks! Great c100mii content, more please!
I just purchased the profile and is awesome!! do you recommend shooting in mp4 or avchd for better rendition color of the color gamma?
I personally shoot AVCHD usually (just for the better audio) but there's not really a difference between the two as far as I'm aware. MP4 does afford you a higher bitrate though. Hilariously after 5 years I still haven't tested it 😂
haa thanks man@@Owlbot
Hey Bro, you said $30 but I try to get it but the price on your website is $50
this is great.
I have a problem with opening custom pict button...and can't find fine tune in menu... can anybody help me? thanks in advance
How can I get a promo code for a discount?
What do you do for audio? What mic are you using. Sounds amazing.
I can't remember but these days I use a Neumann KM185. If it wasn't that it was probably an Oktava MK012.
Oh and then yeah it's just some simple EQ really.
I see you use AVCHD as the codec over the MP4, can I ask what you transcode it to for editing?
I don't do any transcoding. I haven't run in to any issues editing AVCHD.
The last one is unlikely as my PC is about 6 years old. I do have 64GB of RAM, but the hardware is modest (i7 7700K, GTX1070)
@@Owlbot its a mystery, i have a pretty decent system, nvme drives, decent card and RAM i dunno, I'll test the audio difference if i can tell we'll c. on all the group sites it's an even argument, half only use mp4, the other AVCHD. so thee u have it. thanks again and this feature will b shot using your profile of course.
@@RefusetowalkthelineHello! Could you please share your recomendation for shooting slow motion with audio? Shall i go with ACHV or MP4?
Hi OWL BOT. Can your OWLCOLOR profile be used with the Canon C300 MK 1?
No but we'll have a C300 version made soon-ish, it's been requested a number of times.
@@Owlbot Great! Thank you
@@BlueBrickStudio The OG C300 version of OWLCOLOR is out now!
Hey Kenny, I was wondering, did you ever pair the C100 mrkii with an external recorder or thought about it? Llike the Atomos ninja so you can get 10 bit 422? If no why? Just curious. By the way, great content, subscribed.
Yeah I have an Odyssey 7Q+ that I used a couple times but really for the C100 it only gives you a bit more info in the green channel (good for green screens) but practically on a day-to-day level it wasn't worth the added bulk for how little you would see improved. I haven't actually tested the "10 bit-ness" of it though, like if it grades easier, but I also didn't have too hard of a time getting the looks I wanted.
@@Owlbotthank you 😎👍
How would this work on a C300?
how do I install the profile on my c100 mark ii?
Instructions are in the readme
Hi Owlbot! Can you tell which profile did you edit to make your own, cLog or wdr?
Interested if you will be using a similar style of shooting on your C500 II at all. If so, mind sharing?
It's going to be a long process but yeah I do plan on diving deep into the picture profile again with the C500.
@@Owlbot thanks! Im in love with what im getting from the camera in clog 2 but would like to have a good baked in option available for my lazy post production clients
Does it work on the C100 mk 1?
No, I'm working on getting that made. It's been difficult to find a C100mk1 but I think I may have it made at the end of March, schedules permitting
Will this work for a C-100 mark I?
I have a MkI version, yes
@@OwlbotAre there any differences in mk1 and mk2 version?
@ShlomoNizin nope, but you do have to get the correct version for the correct camera or else it won't work.
@@Owlbot I purchased C100 mk2 with your color profile but I'm not sure it has a default settings. How can I check it? I don't want to purchase it twice, also I have a mk1 camera and plan to purchase a preset for it
Awesome video, man! The question is though, will this match with the C200 and EOS R?
No you'll need to create profiles for those individual cameras. I don't own them so I can't help ya unfortunately.
Hey John, we've just released a version for the C200 if you're interested!
@@Owlbot Hey Kenny! I just bought a C200 and would love to try out the C200 PP. I know I didn't the camera before Black Friday/Cyber Monday, but is there a promo code that I may possibly inquire? Thanks, man! Love what you're doing!
@@jmsdfilms Sure, shoot me a DM @_owlbot
Does this also work on canon dslrs?
No, just the C series cameras.
Will this one work with the c100 mk1 also?
No but we're actively working on versions for other C-Series cameras so, soon.
Are there any before/after samples?
When are you having the c100 give away?
My c100 mkii wont load the profile
Save a profile *from* the camera, swap it with the new profile, and it should work. Make sure your camera is in AVCHD mode when you do it (no idea why it matters)
@@Owlbot i figured it out thanks.
Would this work with an Original Canon C300?
I'm not sure I haven't tested it.
Hey man, we've just released OWLCOLOR for the original C300! shop.owlbot.co
@@Owlbot Fantastic!!!!
does it work with canon c100 Mark i??
I'm not sure I haven't tested that. I know the MkII has a different processor so I don't know if it'll look the same even if it did work.
Any word on mk 1 profile? Thanks!
It's been a battle but someone said they might be able to lend me their mk1 next month so... Tentatively the end of March let's say
@@Owlbot Appreciate the fast reply! Potentially have any references or tips to share for some options in the mean time? Have a shoot coming in 2 days and flashed my firmware and accidentally lost some PPs I liked. Trying to avoid C-Log I think.
@@PubFX I only used the mk2 so I can't speak to anything specifically but avoid WideDR, make sure you're nailing your white balance, expose as bright as you can without clipping, make sure your contrast ratios are spot on.
would it work with my c100?
No they have different processors
Too bad, that's what imagined... I can't seem to make clog work... I shoot everything in WIDE DR
any advice?
Shoot as close to the way you want it to look as possible. Give EOS Std. a try, the colors are better.
Same thing for the C500Mkii correct?
Same thing? I will be adjusting the picture profile again, yes. If that's what you mean.
@@Owlbot I meant, can I use the same CP for the C500mKII. Let us know when you have it ready, happy to buy it.
The C500mkII profile is now available in the OWL BOT Shop!
Would this work on the mk1?
Technically yes, but that camera has a different processor so it'd look slightly different. I haven't tested it on the Mk I.
OWL BOT cool thanks, for the look it’s worth a try I think 🤔
@@benmcnights1763 Did you test it?
@@benmcnights1763 ????
Billy Arteaga yes I did , no it don’t !
In case I use this profile and need to transfer the raw footage to the client, what Luts can work to transfer the raw footage to Rec709?
You can sort of treat it as Rec709 and just add some saturation and add/remove contrast as you see fit.
Are you Peter McKinnons unmentioned brother? haha jk
Definitely giving me some things to think about.
