Look the guys is a larger than life character but you have to to give him credit for what he has accomplished. He immigrated to America with a guitar and the clothes he stood up in. And he is a Mensa certified genius. So yeah! Let him be. He's got the talent and skill most of us can only dream of. He loves Ferrari's and he actually still perform where as a lot of the guys of his era just faded.
Im surprised he didnt put his name on his pedals too...lol jk jk. Its nice to see after playing guitar for so many decades he still gets excited about all the little things.
he is allowed to have that kind of ego, no one really touches malmsteen skill-wise, his work ethic is better than anyone else's by a mile, and he can still express feelings thru his playing.
Yngwie's got that unmistakeable charisma and attitude and thats really what makes him great. He has a great sound too. That Plexi circuit is a classic. Except his pitch for the pickups though. Try Bill Lawrence L298s, they're super awesome.
I`ve owned a Malmsteen strat for about 10 years and i can honestly say that it`s an incredible instrument with very good build quality. No imperfections and a truly wonderful sound.. Took out the middle pickup, moved the bridge pickup to middle position and put a Seymor Duncan Hot Rails in the bridge position to give it more of metal bite and feel and now it`s my main guitar again:)
***** Not so much thinner. Just listen to Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top he has guitars strung with 7s and tone the size of Texas. However yes it does affect the tone in a rather drastic way that is too often overlooked by a great many players.
nylonsteel Bottom line... You always sacrifice tone loss with lighter gauge strings... We've done some serious tone testing with 7's, 8's, 9's up against 10's, 11's, 12's and believe me there's a absolute Huge Tone difference ..I guess it comes down to sacrificing tone for speed because the heavier the strings the harder they are to move or bend..Also LOL those Billy Gibbons little girl 7's snapped like brittle hair so we had to tune a whole step down to be able to test them properly.. Ernie Ball Cobalt10's had the best tone results by far..
PRE CBS STRATOCASTER'S It's not the diameter, the gauge, that makes the difference it is the real weight of the metal in the string. A good string which costs a bit more will have more winding and more metal in it so a smaller gauge will be fine. A cheap string with have the bare minimum metal in it so you end up with large gauges and you limit how you can play. If you are going to experiment then get a fine scale, the type you can get at the local head shop (lol) and snip an inch out of a bunch of strings of the same gauge by different makers and you'll be shocked at the differences.
I think people that dislike him are just misunderstanding his sense of humor. I live next to him in Miami and so I know he just has that dry humor going...Like that Fuzz Face joke. Of course he uses it, that's why it's there. Asking him if he uses it is kind of silly, so that's kind of how his wit works. He's actually not arrogant at all and quite friendly, again, from my experience. Re-watch the video with the perspective that he's a joker, and I think you'll get it. As far as who's a better guitar player than who? That's a retarded debate.
...or at least respect him for his dedication to his craft. Regardless of whether or not you like his style of music personally, there's no denying that he gives his all to his performance and is one of the defining guitarists of the genre. He's a classic 80s rock star - huge technical ability and an ego to match! I almost never listen to his music, but it's fun when I do. I went to see him around 2003 on the G3 tour with Satch and Vai, and it was a great show. He does what he does and he's the best at it!
This guy's live tone is truly amazing. He got me using 50w Plexi's 25yrs ago. His new 100w head is great as well (in 50w mode). I'm a Luthier & open a lot of new guitars as they come in. The fit & finish of the YJM Strats are impeccable. The fretwork is perfect every time. He used to do a lot of coke & say stupid shit, but he backs up what he says about his endorsed gear. He's thoroughly involved with his gear & he uses what he endorses.
On the 3rd of Dec 1996 Yngwie came to my hometown of Newcastle upon Tyne England to do a clinic. After the clinic he went to the bar for a drink and wound up to my amazement in company with myself and my few friends that were with me that evening. We didn't hound him and were excited obviously but we gave him his space and conversed with him as we would normally. He was polite and not the big ego guy he's made out to be. I'll never forget that evening.
They didn't show us the Yngiwe Malmsteen Signature Colgate Toothbrush.. :( I was kind of let down by that.. I heard it had a scalloped grip, a total innovation in the art of oral hygiene
Gotta love the guy! Man he is a huge inspiration of mines and is a reason why I was interested in playing guitar during high school. I’m really fortunate to own his fender signature Strat and my recently required Marshall yjm 100 head.
+Sarah Roggenkamp well it's accually a hybrid set with strings from 8's to 11's (8-11-14-22-32-48), so 9's are probably most similar, just in case you're as broke as i am xD
LOL! I was the first one to get one..before Clapton..I love it! All his YJM gear...gotta hand it to him...he's truly changed the way we play guitar. Jimi, Eddie, Yngwie. There are many many greats but these guys truly influenced the direction of music and guitar players in their genre.
Guy learned his chops by sheer dedication and insatiable drive and vision,He,s belongs in that "european" feel of Roth,Blackmore,Shenker etc due to his melodic and classical breeding. This is the guitarist that made me stop playing for 10 years a s i was shocked when i saw the Lenningrad video (remember videos?,But also inspired me to later in life to re think the guitar and listen to Bach, other composers etc.You have to recognise how important this guy is to music once you get past the widdly widdly image,Truly inspiring!!
@@sdime9858 Because he is not looking like a 20 year old anymore. His hair extensions get in the way when he play his scalar runs.lol He was a good guitar player once, but he dont own the ability to renew himself. He keeps on with his harmonic minor. dim scale circus.
@@nevigo5519 Annnnd what have you done for the wider guitar community in general? Just because he isn't like Jeff Beck doesn't mean his talent or ability is irrelevant. His sound is his signature and that is what makes an artist iconic.
Yngwie is HILARIOUS! “You can only see 2 man made things from out of space, the Great Wall of china and the Yngwie Malmsteen stack of Marshall amps” 🤣🤣🤣
Yngwie did make a point when you go out in space, the're are only two man made objects you can see, one is The Great Wall Of China, one is Yngwie Malmsteens gut.
Clapton and Beck will not share the stage with Yngwie. Clapton never invites him to the blues festivals. Trust me, Yngwie will put them to shame and without even trying! Blues players jaws drop with his vibrato alone! Yngwie and Stevie Ray Vaughan are guitar legends with respect!
That's what pisses me off. Everyone thinks that he is just about speed. He has amazing phrasing, legato and especially vibrato. His bending is insane. He would wipe the floors with most blues players. He did in fact grow up on Hendrix.
Well on the G-3 tour Yngwie's "Blues" chops well lets say that "Blues" is NOT his forte. One of the most impactful records ever on me was Rising Force is an Album that moved me like no other record has. It was after the suicide of my brother I was listening to it & all the anger fury I felt was in that album the beautiful parts the Epic & tragic feelings whilst drinking heavily listening to Rising Force I felt that Force Rise & began surge w/a Fury inside I started to destroy my home but it was cathartic. I saw him 3 times nothing compares to Rising Force his best work imo. He help me get that out of my system. Very Powerful Album.
Say what you want... but the fact remains YJM is a legend. His impact on rock guitar is undeniable. He has accomplished more than most will ever dream of. Instead of trying to put him down all the time humble yourself, you might learn something.
yeah, I recommend to try the pickup in the bridge position and keep in mind they are low output so dont expect a super powerfull sound, Yngwie uses the amp gain to 11 and a noise gate.

And he is a Mensa certified genius. So yeah! Let him be. He's got the talent and skill most of us can only dream of. He loves Ferrari's and he actually still perform where as a lot of the guys of his era just faded.
Werner Van der Walt I never knew about MENSA. Damn.
Despond It's true. read his book. It's called relentless
While I'm not an enormous fan of Malmsteen as a player, one thing I will give him is he has tone to absolutely die for.
How can you not love Yngwie? He's the real life Nigel Tufnel.
Fantastic personality this Yngwie J. Malmsteen is...always a great interview.
Yeah he seems very approachable... I'm kinda wondering if the lady on that airplane hadn't done something really obnoxious to him.
I love Yngwie. He makes me so proud to be a guitarist
Im surprised he didnt put his name on his pedals too...lol jk jk. Its nice to see after playing guitar for so many decades he still gets excited about all the little things.
lomparti He's got nothing on Bonomassa, you know he even has his own signature toilet paper now.
well, he is now LOL
I had a dod signature yjm pedal
I love how he refuses to leave the 80s rockstar persona behind to die. The fuzz face comment always kills me 😂
There are two things you can see from space. 1) The Great Wall Of China 2) Yngwie's ego
You can't see the Great Wall of China, it's like a regular street, just very long.
I think it changes the contours of the earth and the vegetation from one side to another, so while you cant see it, you can locate where it is.
Um, no do you hear how Yngwie talks about other guitarists? They are very talented, but the way he undermines them shows incredibly great ego.
he is allowed to have that kind of ego, no one really touches malmsteen skill-wise, his work ethic is better than anyone else's by a mile, and he can still express feelings thru his playing.
@@djordjemarjanovic7889 ego and creativity don't mix
He kills the "thin gauge string, thin tone" myth ..8-48!
Ernie Ball Cobalt10's had the best tone results by far..
nylonsteel He actually uses the heavier bottom because it sounds bigger.
He uses the .8s. because they're easier to play, though.
He could use 9 10 11s doesnt matter ..he will be Yngwie ..only guitarist worry and fight over such meaningless things lol
If you are going to experiment then get a fine scale, the type you can get at the local head shop (lol) and snip an inch out of a bunch of strings of the same gauge by different makers and you'll be shocked at the differences.
i got the new yngwie's signature wig
Makes you play guitar faster
Hehehe.. So many haters. Well let me say this..He does not cry when he goes to the bank!! ;)
He has like a million custom made strats, a few Ferrari's and like 30 marshall stacks. no shit he doesn't cry when he goes to the bank
He has a lots of money even some people hate him.
I finally got my hands on an Yngwie strat. Brilliant guitar! I'd love to meet this guy as well, he's on another planet!
I don´t think I´ve ever seen Yngwie this humble? The beauty of Rebecca Dirks everyone!
6:20 "so you use the fuzz face?"
YJM "Nah I just like the way it looks" LOL
The "King of Cadenzas". Spectacular technique. I love Yngwie. Some of his old interviews in guitar magazines are hilarious.
Now here we see a man who loves his donuts.
He may not love donuts..but he could love himself some pies..
the band i was in, Near Infinity opened up for Yngwie at Jimmy Z in Everett,Wa .April 1st 1994. It was amazing....He was amazing.
I like him, still so excited about playing after all these years at the top, well done Yngwie 👍
H.Havok does he ever invite you over for beers, and if so, can I come too?
Can't fault the guy! Never seems like an ass. And absolutely kills it on the guitar.
Just don’t give him donuts….
As soon as someone slates him you know straight away they cant play themselves for shit. All the other top players love him.
...or at least respect him for his dedication to his craft.
See what Jake E Lee has to say about him.
Noreplyrequired Why? Who cares? Who’s Jake E Lee?
"Now this ones really special... it's a beige stratocaster!"
loool ;D
you know sh*ts real when a guy can shred on a strat though
Girls are always asking what pots are you using... get kinda tiring...
They didn't show us the Yngiwe Malmsteen Signature Colgate Toothbrush.. :( I was kind of let down by that.. I heard it had a scalloped grip, a total innovation in the art of oral hygiene
Still got Yngwie;s guitar pick that hit me in the chest when he flicked it at me at Cardiff St David's Hall. Awesome.
Gotta love the guy! Man he is a huge inspiration of mines and is a reason why I was interested in playing guitar during high school. I’m really fortunate to own his fender signature Strat and my recently required Marshall yjm 100 head.
8's!! No wonder its hard to play his shit on 11's hahaha
+Sarah Roggenkamp 8's and a half step down, right?
yeah I believe so
+Sarah Roggenkamp I dunno if you noticed, but it's hard to play his shit on pretty much anything lol.
+Sarah Roggenkamp well it's accually a hybrid set with strings from 8's to 11's (8-11-14-22-32-48), so 9's are probably most similar, just in case you're as broke as i am xD
+Sarah Roggenkamp He also plays scalloped necks...which requires a light touch to play in tune.
0:10 Malmsteen gauging Rebecca's rack, lol
Rack run down 😂
he looks so young
yes. because of the scalopped fretboard
LOL! I was the first one to get one..before Clapton..I love it! All his YJM gear...gotta hand it to him...he's truly changed the way we play guitar. Jimi, Eddie, Yngwie. There are many many greats but these guys truly influenced the direction of music and guitar players in their genre.
Great presenter, really liked the interview and mention the presenter again.. Best ever, solid, what a girl!!
Why Yngwie is so crazy about Ferrari?
Because Michael Angelo Batio refused to give him keys to the Lamborghini...
I went through 37 prototypes before I found the best donut
Seriously he is the Beethoven of electric guitar by far the best guitar player in the world bar none
iyo
Guy learned his chops by sheer dedication and insatiable drive and vision,He,s belongs in that "european" feel of Roth,Blackmore,Shenker etc due to his melodic and classical breeding. This is the guitarist that made me stop playing for 10 years a s i was shocked when i saw the Lenningrad video (remember videos?,But also inspired me to later in life to re think the guitar and listen to Bach, other composers etc.You have to recognise how important this guy is to music once you get past the widdly widdly image,Truly inspiring!!
I love how enthusiastic about his signature gear he is :D
You got to have the ferrari sticker in the back otherwise it wont work
Dude reallly still live in the 80s.
That’s because barely anything after the 80s was relevant , except some guns n roses, and love hate albums
What's wrong with that
@@sdime9858 Because he is not looking like a 20 year old anymore.
I'm reading these comments
There lame. Malmsteen is a rockstar
Just too cool!! Great equipment and a great musician.
Yngwie is HILARIOUS! “You can only see 2 man made things from out of space, the Great Wall of china and the Yngwie Malmsteen stack of Marshall amps” 🤣🤣🤣
I hope he has a Fender sticker on the back of his Ferrari.
Yngwie did make a point when you go out in space, the're are only two man made objects you can see, one is The Great Wall Of China, one is Yngwie Malmsteens gut.
MetalHead 2509 Hahahahha
You don't realise how much that made me laugh ! Haha
Makes my Boogie rig look like a pimple on an elephants arse!!
Smooth as a shampoo salesman
1:01 almost said Dimarzio
He was cordial and went about showing his gear like a kid excited about his toys, especially the amps.
