In this video, Steve shows you which of his signature Ibanez guitars he's taking out on tour and which made an appearance on his latest album, how he uses his signature Carvin Legacy Amps, and why the Axe-FX II has replaced most effects in his rig.

    Steve's house is like a guitar center except that the guitars at Steve's house are taken care of

      I hadn't been in a guitar center for so long, and I had the most culture shock experience (since I had been playing, practicing, and becoming better in addition to never going to a guitar center for years). It was a sea of middle schoolers playing Smoke on the Water, Enter Sandman, and many other rock standards. It made me laugh and smile with some nostalgia. It felt weird finally being on the other side of that now. But yeah, that said, the guitars for the most part were poorly taken care of, at least if they were in arms reach from the ground.

    I used to think Steve Vai was so uptight and thought so highly of himself based on pretty much nothing except some live performances I saw. I was so wrong about this guy. The more I learn about him the more I admire him. I think he's one of the few famous guitarists that actually deserves all the stuff he has and praise he gets.

    A true genius with a great sense of humour. Anybody who reads that as arrogant doesn't understand both him or the meaning of the word. I like it more when the artists show off their guitars. It means more to them and they can go deeper in details when they explain it rather than techs. Techs most likely know more about the actual technical aspects (rightfully so) but the artists really should show their own guitars.

      Non-guitar fanatics can listen to some of Joe Satriani's songs and have a lot of fun.
      Vai's records are extremely boring and most probably aimed at those kids learning how to play the guitar who go like "Wow, that's incredible - how does he do that?" kind of thing - which has very little to do with music or musicality.

He was whipping thru autographs after the clinic until he got to the item I'd made for him to sign. We talked for about a minute. Ashley Mann I think the distinction is that Les Paul created the guitar and owned the company whereas Vai is referring to a signature guitar created for an artist BY a manufacturer.

  • @krisross8818
    @krisross8818 8 років тому +21

    A lot of people are giving Vai shit for saying the Jem is the longest running and most successful signature guitar in history. I'm sure Vai like myself knows that the Les Paul is technically a signature series instrument. I don't think he's being arrogant or dishonest considering the fact that he has said on many occasions how much he loves and respects Les Paul for his innovations in the evolution of the electric guitar and sound recording. I don't know Vai's reasons for not mentioning the Les Paul but IMO the Paul is not a signature in the same sense of what a signature guitar is today. The Jem is exclusive to Steve Vai, other people play them but no other guitarist has a signature model that is a Jem. The Les Paul however, is a design that many guitarists have their own signature based on. Slash and Zakk Wylde among many others have their own models that are Les Paul's. The design of their instruments are typically the same as far as the specs of a Les Paul go. Their models may vary in pickups, hardware, woods, and electronics but the shape, style, scale length, ect, are exclusive to the Les Paul. A Paul has become a specific instrument like a strat. Like I said, the Jem is identified with one player while the Paul is identified with hundreds of players. Ibanez has many endorsees but aside from Vai none of them play a Jem. A Les Paul is more like an RG in the sense that many players build signatures based around that specific design. I know the Paul is a signature but its kind of a technicality at this point. Regardless, Vai doesn't deserve such hate for an innocent comment like that. As he has matured as a man and a musician he has routinely checked his ego at the door and always gives credit where its due. He's a great spokesman for the guitar community which is often filled with retards who love to measure dicks by claiming superior chops and musical excellence. I'm sometimes ashamed to be among that community. I have said many times you don't have to be great at guitar to be a great musician. Chops don't always translate to great music. I can play circles around some of my favorite musicians but I don't consider myself anywhere near their level of brilliance. Anyway, that is my opinion on the matter.

    • @kenb6521
      @kenb6521 8 років тому +3

      +Kris Ross - I had this argument with my friend, and we've come that the Les Paul isn't a signature guitar - it is THE guitar.

    • @jjwallace666
      @jjwallace666 8 років тому +1

      +Kris Ross He probably is being arrogant tbh, but, he's an excellent guitarist, and by all means a rockstar. If anyone has a right to be arrogant about something he helped create and a guitar that's made for him, it's Steve Vai. But factually, I would think it is the Les Paul, because it's a guitar he designed, and had his name put on, and it's a name that even people who have never touched a guitar know and respect

    • @brianjones8432
      @brianjones8432 5 років тому +1

      Correction, at this point, the Les Paul is a piece of junk with dodgy quality and craftsmanship. :(

    • @Daggerpaw1
      @Daggerpaw1 5 років тому

      The Les Paul guitar is not a signature series instrument. It just bears the name for marketing purposes. Les Paul's endorsement of Gibson only lasted from 1952 to 1961, after that Gibson just used the name and made what they wanted. The only reason that the series still bears the name "Les Paul" is because Gibson already has the trademark, and people know what the name means. The Jem signature guitar was also based on the design of the RG, which was in development the same year (1987). Either that or the RG was based on the Jem.

      @@scuffyplayramranch5256 I never claimed I was one of the most successful men in human history, nor did I claim to be a guitar god. I was just saying, by his own admission, Steve Vai has not achieved a commonly understood mark of success in the world of music: getting a song on the radio. I'm a huge Vai fan, and I think he is objectively both technically and creatively at the top of guitar players and musicians around the world. I'm just saying, by a specific common standard of success by the music world at large, Vai is not as successful as he could be, or I dare say, should be . His ability and creating is overshadowed by incredibly mediocre talent that is shoved down our throats by the big record labels. We're on the same page, friend. No need to be up in arms.
