I'm in Spokane Washington and for most of my life I've made less than 40k. Most years much less... My total monthly outflow is about $1000 a month. Medical insurance, gas and food make up the majority of my expenditures. My number is so low because I'm a tightwad and saved my money hard. What money that I have spent has been to set myself up for low monthly expenses. I retired in late 2019 at 44 years old. My retirement savings are minimal and in spite of the market crashing and suffering massive losses I'm still able to stay retired because I make sacrifices that few do. Hopefully my retirement savings will get back to a comfortable level in the next few years.

My current land lord is planning on tearing down the old house we live in order to build a 33 unit apartment. I was contemplating on using this an opportunity to spread my wings and maybe get my first apartment, but I am dreading the cost. So, I might just go back into a room mate situation as long as its affordable and safe. I noticed some room mate situations now are asking upwards of what it would cost to rent an apartment. It's not s bad as it sounds for where he is in life. But it's not a sustainable income if he wants a family. It's crazy to see how much less expensive life is in other parts of this country. 82k is the poverty line here in San Francisco according to HUD, idk how anyone lives for under 100k. Rent + car + food will set you back $4000 a month or more, even if your frugal. And the federal government thinks your rich when you make 100k, so you have to make $6500 a month to pay that $4000 living costs.

The unfortunate issue is that other markets are being decimated. If you want to stay green, you have to rely on a lot of diversification. Currently up 14% and being careful. I am always astonished by how many people study something vague and then don't find a job. I think schools don't do a good enough job to discuss career opportunities with students. There should be a mandatory week or even month where students work full-time on not only what they're good at but also most importantly get taught in what study area careers are possible. It can't be that kids spend thousands of dollars on a program and then don't find any job, it's bad for them and for society.
As a personal note, I myself found city planning very interesting while finishing high school but didn't really find the career options appealing (in Germany, it's very much controlled by law to every detail, I wanted more freedom in my job). I'm now in business and it fits me way better and there are plenty of jobs to take wherever you look. I really hope he finds something great, planning a city in the US sounds like a very interesting task.

Wow. I'm glad that pay for graduate assistants have gone up. I finished my doctorate in 2003. Back when I was working toward my doctorate, I got full tuition and my living stipend was $12,500. But I did not have to teach or assist, as I was on full fellowship. My peers, who worked as teaching assistants, made about $18,500. This was in LA, where cost of living was really high. We were all living basically just above the poverty line. Most grad students took second jobs teaching part time for enrichment programs or prep schools or community colleges. Or they relied on full time working spouses. In addition, many had parental help. And quite a few took out up to the allowable maximum of 20K in student loans every year. Since I was on scholarship, I was not allowed to take any loans, which sucked at the time, because my lifestyle really lagged, but in retrospect having that limitation placed upon me was the best thing ever. Or else I would have ended up like my peers, with over 100K in debt.
