  • These floors looked shockingly bad. You start with something old and filthy and end with something that's absolutely stunning. Homeowners often don't realize the beauty beneath their feet. I made this video to really open the publics' eyes to what is really possible with their old hardwood floors.

No, not scraps each piece had to be carefully chosen and precisely cut. Various species of wood were used and the artisans had to make sure they would work well together and not expand and contract at different rates.

MANY years ago when I was 18, I worked for a floor layer and helped install a floor similar to the second to last floor in your video. All the pieces were precision cut and numbered by some custom hardwood supplier and all we had to do was build the puzzle. It was 9 foot diameter Sun. There was also other contractors working in this very expensive home. It took several days to piece it together. Owner called us back, there was a 6 foot arch gouged into the floor. The other contractors were cutting framing lumber on the new floor with a circular saw, blade guard stuck back and when he put it on the floor blade still spinning it skipped right across the Sun. 35 000$ just for the hardwood. Other contractors packed up and ran. Owner then paid us to sand and refinish a brand new floor. We had to remove almost a 1/4 inch/6mm. Good thing it was 3/4inch thick boards. The owner was way more chill about it than I would have been.

I live in the U.S.A. Our house is about 102 years old. We have wood floors throughout. When we bought the home 20 years ago, the first thing we did was replace all the windows. 32 windows, Yikes! Next, we pulled up all of the carpeting, and sanded the wax and wear off of the maple floors. They had some scratches, some burn marks, and we had to remove about 100 screws from the floor. (We were told the screws were to decrease the squeaky floors, LOL!) Then we carefully blended a wood look epoxy to fill in the holes, sanded and refinished, they look great!

Reminds me of my Uncle’s house in San Diego. Someone carpeted over these awesome hardwood floors. We sanded and refinished the floors. This was over 10 years ago. The floor sander is like magic.

The floor at 4:54 looks the same as my house's. It's a brazilian wood we call here "Ipê amarelo". I searched and it seems it's called Yellow Lapacho in english. It's a tree from the Handroanthus genus, and considered to be a hardwood very resistant to fire and bugs.

Thank you for a great commentary on an event of revelation - you have the knowledge of what lies beneath, despite appearances, e.g. “I think it looks stinking marvelous . . .”, etc. : )

Loved the fireball sounds between the before and afters. My favourites were the herringbone ones. I could never tire of looking at them. The last one is too much for my senses. At one point it looked as if it were dipping in the centre. Other times it looked as if it would start spinning. But have to say the craftsmanship was great.

Probably one of the more satisfying things about being a wood floor service. Dusty, grimy, hot, stinking, grinding work. In the end, what a difference. Cheers from Michigan. 👍👍

im a painter was in charge for renovating hotel rooms in one of the oldest building in our town (build in 1596 turned into an hotel 1850s). the owner of the building/hotel sadly didn't want to spend a lot of money till i conviced him to take care of these beautifull 200 year old woodfloors. at first i thought i would never get them sanded properly because of the old oil used there and how wobbly the floor was. after i finished the first one he couldn't belive how beautiful they were and i ended up doing 10 more floors that were worth saving.
