- If you're wanting a quick guide to overclocking your i7 - i9 processor on an ASUS z390 chipset based Motherboard, this is the video for you.
In this video I go through the settings I'm running for a quick and easy Overclock that should be stable for most people for the majority of 8th and 9th gen Intel CPUs such as the 8700K / 8086K / 9700K / 9900K. The video also explains what all the various settings mean at a overview level, including ASUS Multicore Enhancement, SVID, VCORE, VCCIO, VCCSA, BCLK, Load Line Calibration, etc.
I will be creating a more detailed overclocking series in the coming weeks and months where I will go into the fundamentals of overclocking and what all the settings mean in more detail to help you fine tune your system for the maximum overclock.

Will this work with MSI as you never did a guild for MSI... Only gigabtye and Asus sadly. The prime a was a bad Mobo for me
@@boostedmedia sorry mate, like your video, overall ... but an i7 9700K WILL NOT be stable with 1.29v for 5ghz!!! It would also be nice if you will show some OC for improved performance but temp control ... I had to put 1.35v to get stable 5 ghz at the cpu touch 85 at full load which is still ok and far from the 100 that will cause throttle but I would like to find some settings to have max 80 full load going maybe at 4.9 or even lower ... I tried to change your settings but did not really work ... do not know

This helped me out a lot, as this board uses a lot of non-standard names for things that should be simple.
Calling your clock settings "AI Tweaker" makes me ignore that menu altogether, especially when there's a process to go through to enable it initially. Now I can actually set up my stuff. Also thankful for the stuff I should be aware of. Great video.

@@boostedmedia Have you used the "Asus Intel Extreme Tuning Utility" to adjust overclock settings? (It's a tool found in the list of drivers/utilities in this motherboard's support site) I'm wondering if there's any benefit to using this tool or any other overclocking software over using the BIOS settings only.
No way. Never use windows software to overclock :)

I can't thank you enough man. The MCE default settings were adding some instability to my build and I couldn't understand why until I watched your video. Now I'm at a very stable 5GHz and it's allowed my 3080 Ti to run at 99% with games running beautifully.

What parts of this got you to a reliable 5 GHz and 99% on the 3080 TI? Right now I'm just running a multiplier of 47 to get a stable 4.7 GHz (that's what I could run stable before I upgraded cooling and upgraded my video card from a 1080 GTX) I also boosted the RAM to 32 GB and the motherboard wants to runt XMP I for the profile. Did you follow all steps or were there some that made the difference? 9700K for me
Right now I'm getting to 94.6 % load on the GPU
This video really helped me out. I was frustrated and ready to return the motherboard. Now the system is stable. ASUS needs to make overclocking much easier like MSI. MSI uses a one click overclock button that changes all the settings, and it's perfectly stable.

My friend! This video is "PURE GOLD!" I have the ASUS ROG Maximus XI Hero Z390 Motherboard with the 9900K chip and was getting a BSOD 1 or 2x's./day when using the ASUS auto AI overclocker... On boot up it was showing 44% overclocked which was 5.2Ghz (200Mhz) too high. Using your manual 5.0Ghz OC settings, my system hasn't had a BSOD one time! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Thanks! after a bsod, I changed 1.290v to 1.315v on my 9900k with a Tuf Z390 Gaming Pro and I have a stable 5.0GHz OC, I’ve run cinebench r20 and prime95 without bsod, and with a max temp of 76c without thermal throttling 👍

Thank you for this guide. You do an amazing job of explaining each feature in the Asus bios as it pertains to overclocking. Asus should cut you a check sir. I think with updated bios, going to 1.6v for the CPU with 5ghz clock is easily achieved, with far lower temps. Thanks for the great info.

I did exactly what the way you said it. Did stress test for about 4 hours and no issues. Thank you. My i9 works at 32c on idle and 65c on full load. Perfect.

Thank you for actually explaining what each of the settings actually mean and how they function. There were others showing what settings to have but didn’t explain at all what they were actually modifying which made me very very hesitant to change anything.

I gained 30 FPS coz of you my pc kept crashing with the default clock on warzone every time it started with cpu temps hitting 100! Now it’s sat at 60 in game. Thank you!

Great video and after uninstalling Asus AI Suite and tweaking the parameters manually in BIOS following your instructions I managed to get the same Cinebench R20 score but at 7 degrees Celsius lower CPU temp.

worked perfectly to get my i7 9700k to 5 ghz around 65c. I could probably go further, but there is no reason. I can run 1440p ultra settings on 99% of games(only ones that are terribly optimized I have trouble) and that's all I'm really looking for

Would've loved to have seen the same type of video with an i7-9700k specifically in your MoBo's CPU socket. That said, I still really appreciate you taking the time to put together _basic_ overclock videos like this. They're VERY helpful to folks whom are less experienced with Overclocking (like myself) and that's an awesome thing because nobody wants to accidentally damage their shiny new hardware when all they were trying to do was maximize its performance, and in all that excitement maybe got a little overzealous with settings they didn't understand ;P

I didn’t end up doing the overclocking fundamentals video series because frankly I got so sick of people asking questions without watch and digesting these videos properly.
The majority of people Jsut want to copy someone else’s settings without understanding what they do and then complain when it doesn’t work and expect me to help. I simply don’t have the time to deal with that.

Dude, you’re freaking awesome. I was using Asus auto-overclock function and my voltages were way too high (1.45) and I think causing shutdown reboot issues. This worked great and voltage is now staying at 1.28 with 5Ghz and a little cooler of course. Is that silicon quality actual too? Mine said 55%. Thanks again.
I wouldn’t pay too much attention to the silicon quality reading. It’s just working off crude averages. Glad the video helped :)
Also, I think they removed that feature with a firmware update... guess it wasn't reliable?

I followed your exact directions for my 9700k, and was able to go up to 5.2ghz @ 1.30v maintaining 45c with a Nzxt Kraken X62. Thanks!

Boosted Media thank you. I tried going to 5.3ghz but it crashed. I went up to 1.32v and still crashed so I put it back to 1.30v and 5.2ghz. If I want to keep going up what do I have to increase other than cpu voltage?
You’ve probably hit the brick wall. Will likely just need more vcore.
Boosted Media just bumped it up to 1.35v @5.3ghz. No crashes and is stable but OpenGL on cinebench is now showing 1-2 less fps.
Sometimes at the upper limit some errors occur that lower your performance even though it doesn’t crash. Could try going up to 1.36V as long as temps are ok.

Hey @Boosted Media , so i have tried everything i learned from that and also other videos, but i cant get my i9 9900k running at 5 Ghz.
Short System Overview: BeQuiet Dark Base 900 (3 Fans), Asus Prime Z390-P ( i know its not the best MB for the i9 ) , 2x8Gb rated 4266mhz Trident Z Rgb , Dark Power Pro 1000W Platinum, Vega 64 Nitro+ , i9 9900k, Corsair H150i Pro Water Loop.
My RAM is rated on 4266mhz (same for this MB), but the maximum i can run with simple overclocking is 3800mhz stable.
At first i went with all your settings, which let me boot and do basic stuff, but as soon as i start a cinebench run it freezes and shuts down on the first render square thing.
I then tried to go up in Voltage to 1.32V, and went down with Clockspeed to 4.8Ghz in single steps each. That worked, but had me worried about the CPU temps at around 90-100°C spreaded across all cores.
Now, i know i could go even further in Voltage, but my cpu reaches 90°C+ way too quickly even on 4.8ghz, so 5Ghz, is like unimaginable right now.
I remember, when i bought the CPU a year ago, i could just load that 5ghz Profile from Intel, and it ran without beeing too hot, maybe like 85°C. Which is alot yes, but now hitting 100°C on 4.8Ghz with 1.32V is not normal i dare to say. The fan and pump speeds are on maximum and i also renewed the thermal paste a few months ago, yet it doesnt really help. Idk, if the CPU got damaged over the past year or so, or if its a setting thing, but even then... i don't understand why its so massively unstable.
Do u think its the Motherboard, just beeing too low speced for the i9? Maybe i need a new Board, but would a new Board really lower temps by 20-30°C? I see alot of ppl running 5Ghz on 70°C even with a little worse cooler options.

@@AvnerRosenstein-ULTRA-LXV Hey, yes as soon as i switched to a better Mainboard (Asus Maximus XI Apex in my case) the cpu ran instantly 10-20°C cooler and now i'm actually daily using it at 5.1 Ghz at 1.37V and AVX drop Set to just 1. No overheating or throttling even in Benchmarks . Cinebench R10 can get 5159 Points, but i dont remember the version TLDR; Asus Prime is actually the worst Mainboard You can buy for Heat Management.

What's interesting is I can get to 5.1ghz with certain things enabled like the auto stuff on voltage etc. However, I cannot get a stable 5.0ghz when I do everything manually. Right now I'm 4.9ghz with:

System Agent@1.0v
Vcore@1.25v
PCH@1.0
AVX is at 0
What's interesting is my temps with this setup are way cooler than stock ASUS profiles. Idle is like 32c and load no more than 55-60c and even under some loads it never goes to 55c. I still have a difficult time accepting that I can get 4.9ghz stable with only 1.25v....yet 1.35v for 5ghz won't work lol.
As for the 5.0ghz problem I'm having...I have no idea how to configure things so it's stable...I've tried most things I think. I have went up to 1.35v on the vcore and 1.2v for both system agent and vccio. I have not tried an AVX offset though. Thank you for the swift reply!

did a really late upgrade this year and now watching overclocking guides, this was great but im wondering if i need more cooling, i have a hyper 212evo and im just not sure if doing this to a 9700k will make a mess of things. If someone out there knows it would be cool to have a step in a better direction
I know this is a late reply. But, yes, you need better cooling. Those Hyper 212s were great bang for the buck and worked well for the 4 core generation. It's not enough for 8 core OC though. You're going to want to invest in a large air cooler - NH-D15 / Dark Rock Pro 4 for example - or water cooling with at least a 240/280 radiator, those 120/140 radiators are crap. Now if you're not doing an OC a Hyper212 is fine.
my current capability only goes to 140% with the same motherboard? any reason why?

XMP I - Load the DIMM default XMP memory timing optimized by ASUS.
XMP II - Load the DIMM complete default XMP profile.

@@CocoNick just to clarify 85c isn't a normal temp that's to high for normal use gaming or whatever no matter what the condition is via room temp the whole ''hey whats your ambient room temp'' oh thats why.. just not relivent and is cliche. number one you need to make sure your heat sink is seated properly and is a adequate cpu cooler, two being that you didnt apply to much thermal past and didnt do a spread method which can cause a uneven surface for heat transfer due to air pockets between the cpu and heat sink from my experience less is better and just a small dot in the middle is good and then let it work over time and you'll see better results in most cases. its different for everybody. been building computes maintaining them repairing them so on and so fourth for over 13 years. i got the same cpu the 9700k also at 4.8 not 4.9 which is its recommended overclock nothing beyond that, but mine iv'e seen idles 23c at times or mid 25c . and hardly wants to go over 58c 60 degree celcius most times and only ever reaching 65c max after countless hours more than 8 hours of use whether is gaming while running other programs in the background. also you dont need to manually overclock you cpu to 4.8 as it automatically turbos to 4.6ghz to 4.8ghz depending on the scenario.
i had the same problem with overheating i solved it with a closed loop water cooler corsiars h100x this is the cheaper version with no silly lights and works amazing a great buy at £70 and my idle temps are 20 and full load around 55-60 so much better @@Greg-qs2jp

Yep. Clean windows installation on an an NVME SSD with nothing but OCCT and CPUZ installed. No network and nothing but a Keyboard and Mouse connected.
@@boostedmedia Dang....I just built my new system with a (don't laugh) 9600k @ 5ghz, with 16gb 3200mhz and just a 850 Evo and still takes 8 seconds. I thought NVMe would make windows boot slower because it has to initialize the PCIE bus or something? Maybe that isn't a problem anymore, I dunno. Haha :)
