Viewers have asked how we backup our footage on the move - well in this video we share how we do this BUT it has its quirks and can be frustrating BUT ultimately it works. However if you have a better way please share on the basis we have large data volumes on a daily basis, we don't want to travel with our macbook and the cloud is not an option due to speed/time.

iPhone is always a challenge because of that lightning connection. They say the iPhone 15 with usbc is better. I use iPad with a mains powered dock when travelling. The dock has made life easier as we can have multiple drives, phones and mics attached. Downside is lots of wires and I hate wires 😁👍
Yep still looking on line but there are 5 year old design boxes like the dji copilot and a rav box but both have limitations - you would think there was something out there

It can be frustrating but so far it’s the only thing I can find that is workable with a bit of frustration disconnecting - you have to leave it alone whilst it does its stuff
Food for thought, largely using NVME storage nowadays on desktops for rapid R/W speeds and currently storing about 10tb ranging from 500gb games and rich media content, long gone are the days of sending patches by burnable media and royal mail. Also, cloud storage, yes it has limitations around actually having access, but cloud storage services from vendors such as Apple is pretty decent for iDevice storage. For commercial activities then AWS and Azure are awesome for redundancy. The likes of AWS have trial packages to allow you familiarsation with their offerings.
Yes a lot of changes for sure - just can’t see anything that’s any better than what I have to copy 50gb daily … cloud won’t work on the move due to speed and data cost. I I have seen a couple of bespoke devices but both have limitations like dji copilot and a rav device

Pretty much what we do. SSD is a useful bit of kit. I do not know how I managed without it.

Hey Stew. That was a good tip. I have the cables so must try that. Bringing MacBook on the road is never a good idea. Do you have any issues with the iPhone reading different camera formats, or is that a non issue?
Not so far as it back into files - it’s a bit frustrating the key is not to play with the phone whilst it does it
I tried going straight from card to external disk but it kept dripping out hence onto the phone first in a folder structure and then copy to disk
@@getawaygeese Stew. Are you filming in 4K or 1080? If 4K, are you using just one drive for all that backup or a few of them given that 4K takes a lot of storage space?
@kampenheimer my drone is 4k and the occasional slow mo or low light but the rest is mainly 2.7k 24 frames with some 1080p - I think of the top of my head we take about 30- 50k per day on a busy film day but we are trying to reduce our waste footage as much ends up on the cutting room floor

Unfortunately for us it doesn’t work when we have 30-50gb per day but I think if your not a creator that would work - that also eats into mobile data and obviously sometime your out of signal - you would still need your get it on your mobile device to - but tell your friend it may work for them if the size is smaller 😂
