  • Today we're taking a look at one of Street Fighter V's most irrelevant V-Triggers, Oro's VT1!
    People know Oro's VT2 inside and out, as it's one of the best V-Triggers in the game, but there's a very good reason you almost never hear about his other V-Trigger.

    I wouldn't be surprised if VT1 is bad on purpose. I mean, they would have known from the beginning that everyone was going to want to use Tengu Stone, since it's such an iconic part of the character, and it was naturally going to be a V-Trigger, so having the other V-Trigger turn out stronger would actually be a big disappointment for a lot of people.

      That's one of my biggest gripes with the V-System as a whole. I mean, how many times have you seen a VT2 Urien? I know they called it the final update but it'd be cool if VT1 had these buffs:
    - you can extend the grounded throw for more damage at the cost of draining the whole meter
    - both versions leave the enemy in hard knockdown and much closer to Oro
    - you can cancel his jumpkicks into the air throw
    - you can cancel any tatsu into the VT1 activation
    - while in VT1, you can use his DPs without charging! This will however drain 1/4th of the bar.
    - the activation is just as fast as VT2

    I think one of the main issues about this V-Trigger for me is that it just isn't that interesting, I'm no Oro main, but the way V-Trigger 2 affects his combos, his neutral, and his pressure, as well as the bit of RNG that rewards you for being situationally aware is just so much more fun and interesting than a grab that only acts as a combo ender/mixup tool, and even V-Trigger 2 has cooler mixups with things like ambiguous chicken leg set ups.

    I legitimately tried to find some edge case where VT1 had a purpose, and there's just nothing there. Like, it's better at opening people up than VT2, but you only need to hurry to open people up *because* you have VT2. It doesn't scoop anti-airs, you can't cancel your air normals into it... Like, all they'd have to do with this V-trigger to instantly triple the fun factor of it would be to change how the air grab works. Instead of him swinging his arm, make him tumble in a direction, turning whiffing this button into a *third* jump. Make the tumble 8 directional and you've got a stew going.
    Imagine being able to jump toward your opponent, double jump back and then immediately down+forward tumble to get back to the ground in front of them before their anti-air is done. That's insanely strong, but I still don't think tengu stone strong.

    • @BigYellowSilly
      @BigYellowSilly  2 роки тому +30

      There's also the fact that VT2 gives you several completely safe opportunities to open someone up, VT1 gives you one big chance that can cost you big time if they jump, and it even completely ends your pressure

    Great video. Also worth mentioning as shown at 12:16 a LOT of Oro's VT1 BNBs heavily rely on being able to do forward MP into HP DP with 100% consistency, which is an extremely high execution requirement just to get a basic ender into a knockdown with meh oki. Other than maybe Prophet on hitbox I don't know any Oro players that can hit that 100% of the time starting from a spaced EX tatsu.

  • @Neogears1312
    @Neogears1312 2 роки тому +21

    Even ignoring tengu stones being incredible as per usual, I think probably the biggest issue is the grab just ends what you’re doing right then and their for the only benefit of being a bit easier. It’s like Alex’s vt2 where ignoring that it gives him a low confirm now, Alex’s vt1 gave incredible utility and let you keep momentum going while Alex’s vt2 gave…some good damage…a grab… and a kinda cool animation that was a throwback to a terrible move in third strike, which funny enough is exactly what oro vt1 does too.
    I think if it at least did a good amount of stun or gave oro access to something big he was missing like Alex getting a cMK low canceling into a special now it’d probably be good but especially considering how amazing tengu stone is no one would realistically pick it even if you weren’t that great with tengu stone because it’s not that hard to get some ok damage off it.

    • @budafuka
      @budafuka 2 роки тому +1

      At least they buffed the shit out Alex VT2 so it's a reasonable choice for some matchups. Oro's is just completely worthless. Even Urien VT2 is league's beyond by comparison even though you would still never pick it. Maybe that's why they didn't bother.

    • @Neogears1312
      @Neogears1312 2 роки тому +2

      @@budafuka the weird thing though is with urien there’s self awareness; Aegis IS the selling point. It’s uriens SPD, his rekkaken, his genei jin. If you’re playing THIS character over ANY OTHER, your only reason was because of aegis. It is the sole defining move of urien where scrubs often argue Urien basically shouldn’t function at anything because he’s allowed to have it, it’s that defining of an ability. By not giving vt2 a fair chance it at least comes off that capcom we’re aware of this and if yun was in V he’d get similar treatment if genei jin was made before vt2s existed. It’s probably be You Hou but kinda mediocre because they only made a vt2 out of obligation.
      But Tengu stone wasn’t why you played oro. At least in 3 it wasn’t. He had another usually more popular super. Arguably even then the unblockable wasn’t the reason you played him. It was chicken combos that motivate you to play him and that’s not only still big, it also works really well with vt1. The multi slam was arguably just as popular as any other super in 3 regardless of it sucking. It seems so weird to just dunk on it so universally for no real justifiable reason.

    It reminds me of G's first iteration of VT2 where there was no point in using it whatsoever, and for it to become good, it took them to buff it for like 3 patches in the row (aside from nerfing grab damage) while simultaneously heavily nerfing vt1. In Oro's case, they had one patch left but didn't buff vt1 pretty much at all and didn't nerf vt2, so of course nobody gonna use the former. It's almost like they decided not even bother/waste time on it at all, since people would always pick vt2 just like they always pick aegis on Urien.

    On top of oki my biggest beef with the command grab is no autonomy over which way you throw the enemy. It would be really nice if you could decide to throw them close (for oki) or far (for setups) and which side you throw them on. On top of that if you could cancel the throw into VS1 then you could get some nasty shmix going with the command grab. And v shifts still exist so I don’t even feel like that would be too overpowered.

    Ok but consider this; the air grab animation is funni tho. A 140 year old yellow goblin man tackles you to the ground, stomps on you like you were a bucket of grapes, and then kneels on you to pray to Jesus. All while balancing a turtle on his head.
    On a more serious note, I feel like the devs may have designed themselves into a corner when they made Tengu Stone a Trigger. I mean, it was practically tailor-made to be one of his two triggers so they didn't really have a choice, but Tengu Stone is just so strong by nature that anything that is competing with it would have to work overtime to even have a chance of pulling even with it.
    Like, even if you gave the grabs more range, increased the damage of them and lightened the damage scaling, and hell, even gave them Cody VT2 command grab levels of oki, I STILL think Tengu Stone would be preferred nine times out of ten. It's just too good, and whatever was competing against it was doomed to fail from the start. Not the end of the world since nobody is forced to use bad V-Triggers or Skills, but it does kind of suck to see certain things go completely unused, even if the lack of use is justified.
    I don't know if I'd call this the game's worst trigger in a vacuum, but it's certainly the most outclassed when compared to its "sequel" trigger.

But consider this, it is a non-zero chance that my brain could blue screen ( happened 4 times last year) resulting in me driving a car into the ocean or one of the many rivers nearby where i live, it lasts about 20-30 seconds before i regain motor and brain functions, therefore learning how to swim could be the difference between being a cool but morbid fish tank prop or riding public transport for the rest of my natural life.

      Yeah, this is definitely the _Street Fighter_ game of nerfed command grabs, which will probably carry into _SF6_ too given Capcom went out of its way to make sure there weren't any frame 1 grabs anymore. IIRC every non-normal grab is frame 5 at least, which makes it a bit funny how Laura still managed to dominate any Season with what was essentially a throw vortex despite that.

      @@MusicoftheDamned tbf capcom has always been garbage at making command grabs. There’s a reason people think kof grapplers are cheap or gimmicks when transitioning to that series because they actually considered making it a real tool and grapplers actual characters instead of “lets make character who only gud at point blank and is terrible at getting in! No combos just 3 grabs that all do the same thing !”

    • @MusicoftheDamned
      @MusicoftheDamned 2 роки тому +3

      @@Neogears1312 As someone who has also played _KOF_ games for a while, I think it's a _bit_ more complex than that even as much as I tend to rake current Capcom over the coals. I think the biggest difference is merely that _KOF_'s system mechanics are just _*_far_*_ more friendly to grapplers since it gives them far more ways to get in like it does basically ever other character. After all, they can hyper jump in, short hop in, roll in, and, unless they're Tizoc, even run in. Meanwhile _SF_ characters are basically stuck jumping with one predictable jump arc in most games. All this before the fact that basically all _KOF_ special and super grabs can be comboed into, which I admittedly still don't know how to feel about even if that mechanic isn't broken obviously.
      On the flip side, I would argue that _KOF_ is pretty terrible at making good zoners more often than not since they're either oppressive or just flat out suck with no real in-between. The most consistently decent one has been like Athena over the years, and even she can be oppressive in some games. It would be nice if Capcom did have more grapplers who weren't huge and/or slow targets, but that wouldn't fix the problems that Zangief, T. Hawk, and other big body grapplers tend to face in its games. Shrug.
